During his townhall meeting in Arkansas yesterday, “not a single questioner criticized” President Bush. With polls showing Bush’s disapproval at record highs, the White House is staging “let-Bush-be-Bush events” in front of “friendly audiences” with “increasing frequency.”
Verizon Communications told congressional investigators that, from January 2005 to September 2007, the company provided customers’ telephone records to federal authorities on an emergency basis 720 times. “Verizon also disclosed that the FBI, using administrative subpoenas, sought information identifying not just a person making a call, but all the people that customer called, as well as the people those people called.”
Air America radio host Randi Rhodes was mugged not mugged on Sunday night while walking her dog nearby her Manhattan apartment. “According to Air America Radio late night host Jon Elliott, Rhodes was beaten up pretty badly, losing several teeth and will probably be off the air for at least the rest of the week.”
The House Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing today on the Jena Six case, with Rev. Al Sharpton and others testifying. Panelists will urge Congress to “expand hate crime laws to deal more forcefully with noose-hanging incidents like the one in the Jena Six case in order to squelch what he called a sharp rise in racism.”
Fearing his re-election chances are dim, the House GOP leadership “has held private discussions with Rep. John Doolittle (R-CA) in an effort to convince him to retire.” But Doolittle, who is under federal investigation, is “promising to run for re-election.”
“For the first time in more than 100 years, much of the Southeast has reached the most severe category of drought, climatologists said Monday, creating an emergency so serious that some cities are just months away from running out of water.”
“Oil thundered towards $88 a barrel on Tuesday, hitting a new record and extending a rally that has added eight dollars in a week on tight supplies, strong demand and tension in northern Iraq. Oil is closing in on the inflation-adjusted high of $90.46 seen in 1980, the year after the Iranian revolution and at the start of the Iran-Iraq war.”
$15 billion: Amount seniors and other taxpayers could have saved this year if the government had “slashed administrative costs in the Medicare drug program and negotiated the same kind of discounts it does for poor people under Medicaid.”
And finally: While many Capitol Hill offices “proudly display their home-state” sports teams’ gear, the walls of Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones’s (D-OH) office are blank. They’re hoping for the Cleveland Indians to go all the way, and remember the loss of the Cleveland Cavaliers in last season’s NBA playoffs when their walls were decorated. “In the past it’s been a jinx,” spokeswoman Nicole Williams said. “We are diehard fans. We hope the Indians go all the way, and then we’ll celebrate.”

The scenario I heard Jonathan Turley give Keith Olberman last night is, you make a phone call and it is a wrong number. But, the number you called is a “person of interest” to our government. Based on that wrong number, our government using the administrative subpoenas, can get our phone records, financial records, medical records, just about anything they want. So, to all the people who say “I’ve done nothing wrong, therefore my government will never spy on me”, you might want to rethink that.

OMG - my best wishes to you Randi. If you have never listened to Randi’s radio program, please do. She is the most intelligent and hard hitting talk show host on progressive radio. She can sometimes be rather shrill, but everything she says makes sense and she generally has the facts to back up what she says.

Considering the fact that she was apparently not mugged for valuables, I think this may just be a possible scenario. If they think this may stop Randi, they have another thought coming. That lady is tough and she’s gonna be really pissed!
I really fear what is going to happen to our country when the Republicans are finally put in their place. I fear we are going to see a lot of violent incidents because these people are going to be looking for a way to vent their frustrations and with encouragement by the likes of Billo, Hannity and Malkin, it could get ugly.
October 16th, 2007 at 9:23 amI suspect that the Thom Hartman and Randi Rhodes incidents are not unrelated. The wackos realize that they are under pressure and are reacting in the only way they know how. Facts and reality are simply things that need to be beaten out of the way. I suspect and hope that she will recover quickly and not be subjected to PTSD. Maybe some of her listeners who live nearby could be her walking buddies.

Ahhhh, VV’s ’super secret selected citizen scenario’. It’s the only way this idiot dares to speak outside the WH anymore.
Something is drastically wrong with America when a President has to hand pick his audience for a public event. Very wrong. Bush is a wimp; all hat and no horse. (In fact, as Vincente Fox pointed out, Bush is afraid of horses. How about that? A cowboy afraid of horses. Or is it just female horses?)

But, those poor pharmaceutical companies need that money. If you took the amount of corporate welfare out there and compared it to our social welfare, corporate welfare would win hands down. And then there are all those corporations doing business in the USA but incorporated in the Caymen Islands so they don’t pay US Income taxes. Another form of corporate welfare. This is why we need a president who is not beholden to the corporations.

Amen, Bilbo, amen. I’d like to see a list of all corporations claiming to be American, but using an offshore address to avoid paying taxes.
THAT IS NOT AMERICAN!
We need to cut corporate welfare, desist granting no-bids to offshore entities and ignoring corporate tax liabilities as ‘unimportant’. Doesn’t Blackwater now claim Dubai as it’s ‘home’? This would be an example of a company that should not qualify for contracts.
One more thing. The 9 Billion Bush is pissing & moaning about in regard to SCHIP…isn’t that the same amount lost in Iraq that we don’t even know where it is?!
October 16th, 2007 at 9:31 amSo Bush the little coward needs to be cheered up by the 28%ers. Let him keep living inside the bubble. It is going to burst all the more spectacularly when he leaves office.

more concerns here Blackwater are unlawful combatants. Actually, according the united states own definition of unlawful combatants they ARE without question.
October 16th, 2007 at 9:38 amDoesn’t Blackwater now claim Dubai as it’s ‘home’? This would be an example of a company that should not qualify for contracts.
This is the reason why John Kerry voted against the first funding request for Iraq. He and other Democrats wanted to insert a clause that said no military contract could go to a company that was not incorporated in the United States. Of course the Republicans were against that and got it taken out of the appropriation bill.
So we have no-bid contractors making billions off of the war, incorporated outside the US and not paying taxes on their profits. This gives the term “war profiteers” a whole new spin.
October 16th, 2007 at 9:39 amHell, the way the Reich-wing went after a 12 year-old and his family, who can blame anybody for keeping silent?

October 16th, 2007 at 9:39 ambilbo, nice catch!
October 16th, 2007 at 9:40 amI missed that and she’s my rep!
From article: “Apparently, some right-wing critics of lib talk aren’t happy that conservative talk only accounts for 90% of the programming on talk radio. These whack jobs appear determined to whatever it takes to silence the opposing point of view.
Not surprisingly, the only talk radio host killed for his political views was a liberal. In 1984, two right wing extremists gunned down Denver talk show host Alan Berg. Berg’s tragic murder was memorialized in a chilling movie Talk Radio.”
—————————————
What are they saying here? That one of the reasons why conservative talk radio outweighs liberal talk radio in this country is because there are right-wing extremists who won’t hesitate to injure or kill the opposition but there are no left-wing extremists who will do so?
There’s gotta be a reason why people who say extremely hateful things to a large audience (Limbaugh, Coulter, Malkin, Boorz, Beck, Savage, O’Reilly, Hannity, et al) walk around unmolested by nutcases. And I think it’s that they tend to p!ss off those who believe in non-violence.
Well — maybe not completely. I think Ann Coulter got a pie in her face once.

I am sure this person that mugged Rhodes, probably has a a nice wrap sheet but was let loose due to “good behavior” and a liberal judge who claimed his civil rights were violated cause the officer accidently pumped his head putting him in the squad car after being arrested for the same crime a few months prior.
October 16th, 2007 at 9:55 amI read some of the comments about Randi on the linked article. Boy those people are hateful. Sure there are muggings in NY every day, but I bet there aren’t any that are for no apparent reason, which seems to be the case with Randi. This is unrelated, but I wonder what kind of a dog she has since it doesn’t sound like the dog did much to protect her. Maybe she needs to trade that dog in for a Rotweiller. My daughter recently got a Great Dane. I asked her why in the world she wanted a dog that big. Her answer was, when I walk with him, no one looks twice at me thinking they can mug me. Some more reasons to be optimistic:
Al Qaeda in Iraq terror group is on the wane, say experts
BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU
Tuesday, October 16th 2007, 4:00 AM
WASHINGTON - Al Qaeda in Iraq, once the war’s most bloodthirsty and lethal insurgent group, is badly damaged and being forced to fend off both the U.S. and former Sunni allies, intelligence experts said Monday.
But military and counterterror officials say it’s premature to declare victory over the group that pledged loyalty to Osama Bin Laden long after its murder spree began in the summer of 2003.
“Al Qaeda in Iraq has been dealt harsh blows in the past and bounced back,” a defense intelligence official warned. “Don’t count them out.” …
Evan Kohlmann, a government consultant who painstakingly tracks Iraq’s diverse insurgency, said the Al Qaeda franchise there - now led by an Egyptian - has indeed “reached a crisis point.”
“To say their backs are broken is not right. They do have their backs against the wall,” Kohlmann said.
“Clearly there are some positive trends,” agreed a U.S. counterterrorism official.

Comment by TCDon
Yes, muggings often happen in NY. But how many of them are people with no apparent valuables? And why did they bash her in the face, specifically in the mouth. I don’t know if her mugging was politically motivated or not, but I do believe it’s quite likely. With the likes of the hate mongers Billo, Malkin and Hannity inciting their rabid crowd, it’s just a matter of time before these kind of things start to happen more frequently. Also, explain the bullet holes in Thom Hartmann’s car. He lives in Portland, not exactly the violent crime capital of the world.

They decided to start calling insurgents AQI and the insurgents were only too happy to adopt that label since they thought it made them bigger and badder. Also, since our military has estimated AQI is only about 5% of the fighters in Iraq, even if they all went away, we would still have 95% of the fighters left intact and ready for a new day. I fail to see how that is good news.

The Next Right Wing Lie: FISA
By Sam Seder on October 15, 2007 - 4:31pm
Be prepared, with the FISA fight coming you will see and hear this lie:
October 15, 2007 — WASHINGTON - U.S. intelligence officials got mired for nearly 10 hours seeking approval to use wiretaps against al Qaeda terrorists suspected of kidnapping Queens soldier Alex Jimenez in Iraq earlier this year, The Post has learned.
…
This week, Congress plans to vote on a bill that leaves in place the legal hurdles in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act - problems that were highlighted during the May search for a group of kidnapped U.S. soldiers.
When you do, remember that:
a) no warrant is needed for foreign to foreign calls
b) this was simply another Bush “administration” screw up….
…
McConnell told the committee today that restrictions derived by the FISA Court this year on wiretapping foreign-to-foreign communications that pass through the U.S. prevented the NSA from surveilling Iraqi insurgents who had kidnapped U.S. soldiers for 12 hours. But the source, who is privvy to the timeline of the incident, says “internal bureaucratic wrangling,” and not court-based restrictions, were responsible for the lag time. “To get an emergency warrant, you just have to believe the facts support the application that someone is an agent of a foreign power,” the source says. “That takes approximately five seconds to establish if you’re going after an Iraqi insurgent.”

October 16th, 2007 at 10:18 amWhat’s truly interesting about the Randi Rhodes discussion on this thread is that although no poster had definitively asserted that the assault was politically motivated, the trolls du jour (Joneser and TCDon) are going out of their way to maintain that it was not.
Absent more evidence, it’s premature to declare that the assault was politically motivated, but it’s every bit as premature to declare that it was not. Given the facts known at this time, there’s ample reason to suspect political motivations, and no reason whatsoever to simply dismiss them out of hand.

Anti-Muslim posters go up at George Washington University
* Students plan awareness week to counter anti-Islam attitude
By Khalid Hasan
WASHINGTON: Another sign of the general feeling against growing Islamist radicalism came to light on Monday here when anti-Muslim posters were found plastered on the walls of George Washington University, widely known as a liberal campus.
Campus police removed the posters and fliers as student bodies met to deplore the incident. One poster carried the photo of an Arab with a description of a “typical Muslim†as one who wears a “suicide vest,†carries a “hidden AK-47†and bears a “peg-leg for smuggling children and heroinâ€. According to press reports, the posters have upset the student body, which is hosting an “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week†later this month. Some students thought the posters might be a joke at the expense of the conservatives, as fine print at the bottom of one said: “Brought to you by Students for Conservativo-Fascism Awareness†— and a postscript recommending a BBC video on the politics of fear. The Washington Post quoted a New York Muslim student Najah El Bash, a leader of the conservative Muslim Students Association, who said, “I was just really shocked that this sort of hatred exists on our campus. You never think this would come so close to home, from people youu’re in classes with. It’s scary.â€
University President Steven Knapp said in a statement, “There is no place for expressions of hatred on our campus.†He called the fliers reprehensible and said students of different faiths would be gathering this week for a community meal with Muslims during Ramazan. “This event speaks of our university’s commitment to global cultural understanding and respect,†he added. The Young America’s Foundation, a group of the university’s conservative students, whose name appeared under the fliers, denied any linkage. Sergio Gor, president of the group, said he was horrified when he heard about the fliers. “We did not put up those posters,†he said. “Someone took our name and used it. It was hateful. We’re a conservative group on campus. We promote liberty and freedom, not bigotry and hatred.†One former president of the group blamed the Left for the outrage.

Google 43.7%
Yahoo 28.8%
If they aren’t the best place, then I doubt they would be leading the nearest competition by 15% market share.
Now if all you care about searching is conspiracy theories, and it is in the 1 week period when your favorite site stops being the top hit, you may have to try someone else in the short term.

Hatred’s Ricochet
By Ben Johnson
FrontPageMagazine.com | Tuesday, October 16, 2007
“A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on.†– Mark Twain.
Word of the mock “Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week†posters – more than 100 of which left-wing students posted on the campus of George Washington University last week – has reached Osama bin Laden’s backyard.
A recent news blurb about the hate fliers, entitled merely “Anti-Muslim posters go up at George Washington University,†appeared in the most recent edition of The Daily Times…of Pakistan.
As with all other media coverage, the bold print ignored that a group of leftist students – including a Muslim – planted the fliers, misappropriating the student organization’s name, Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week’s name and website, and the logo of George Washington University; the Pakistani story’s sub-headline read: “Students plan awareness week to counter anti-Islam attitude.†While recounting the deep pain these fliers alleged caused GWU’s Muslims, the story stated, “Some students thought the posters might be a joke at the expense of the conservatives.†(Emphasis added. The story also called the Muslim Students Association “conservative.â€)
The words of the story ignore the context: this is the region of the world is a seething cauldron of anti-American hatred believed to be sheltering the men who perpetrated 9/11. Some have said in a free election Pakistanis would elected Osama bin Laden president by a comfortable margin. Its tribal citizenry already believes the American heart is an abyss of decadence and anti-Muslim hatred. The story’s ambiguities reinforce those prejudices in a country even left-wing Democrats agree is vital to American soldiers currently fighting the War on Terrorism.
These are the serious consequences of sophomoric behavior. This left-wing “satire†has now ricocheted around the world, from a boiling P.C. campus to the nerve center of worldwide jihad. Two years ago, another hoax that attributed anti-Muslim behavior to American patriots touched off a sting of riots throughout the Muslim world, claiming 16 lives. Islamo-fascists do not care if the creators of the fliers were conservative American or left-wing (anti-)Americans; they care only that such posters exist – and in an honor-based culture, the blowback may yet be unbearable.
These infractions should move GWU administrators to throw the book at the gang of seven students who posted these hate-fliers. If George Washington University administrators could not be moved by the fliers’ dishonesty, the needless suffering and humiliation heaped upon members of GWU’s Young America’s Foundation, or the misuse of its own logo, perhaps it take note of the international scope this incident has taken on – and the accompanying embarrassment these left-wingers have caused GWU.
Case Closed
Instead, the university announced Friday it has closed its investigation – and has said nothing of pending charges against the students. “Following University policy, any violations of the Code of Student Conduct that occurred in connection with this activity will be handled through the Student Judicial Services process, without regard to the political views or affiliations of those found to have been involved,†wrote Director of Media Relations Tracy Schario in an e-mail to the official student newspaper, The Daily Colonial. The paper also notes none of the leftist students is speaking to the media about the process.
Since “Students for Conserativo-Fascism Awareness†is not an official university student organization, it had no business hanging fliers anywhere in the first place, nor using the GWU logo, nor sitting back while another group was publicly flailed for its handiwork. Nor have these seven students shown a hint of remorse. The group wrote in letter confessing to the action, “It was inspiring to see that students directed their attention to the real threat.†That is, their posters had the intended consequence of branding all dissent from radical orthodoxy as “hate.†No one currently knows whether there are any charges to investigate, or if there will ever be consequences for this hate screed that has now been reported in Islamabad.
The attitude of GWU administrators do not hold out cause for hope. When the posters appeared to be the work of campus conservatives, university president Steven Knapp immediately reacted, “There is no place for expressions of hatred on our campus.†The administration sent an e-mail to YAF leaders, demanding they draft “a statement which states that you will not allow hate speech to be a part of any of YAF’s events, literature, written or verbal communication planned for Islamofacism Week.â€

Half the time we disagree, Trip, I think it is because you ascribe the worst motives to my words. That is often the case with some of the folks you tangle with here, but it really isn’t my deal.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:36 pmIf you read into the Rhodes attack, the Police are treating it as a HATE CRIME, they are not releasing details yet, in other words, they were spewing RiechWing Hate at her while they beat her. 99% sure that this is the Repukian Scum at work here.

you got to love this guy! He has to be wearing black all day with a pair of Nike Cortez’s, a shaved head and looking to the sky for a comet with a cup of kool aid in hand… he must.

the point is that there are always some fanatics who are true believers and blindly follow their evil leader no matter what, always rationalizing their beliefs.

If the police aren’t releasing details, how do you know they were spewing ReichWing Hate at her during the assault?
Not trying to be argumentative, or question your sincerity or honesty. I’d just like to see some evidence of this, so we can stop speculating wildly and discuss this issue from a better-informed standing.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:47 pmAAR’s official blogger, Nancy Scola, posted the following message on the lib network’s website this morning:
“Air America host Randi Rhodes experienced an unfortunate incident hindering her from hosting her show. The reports of a presumed hate crime are unfounded. Ms. Rhodes looks forward to being back on the air on Thursday.”
