Hastert to announce retirement tomorrow.

Roll Call reports that Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) is “expected to announce Thursday that he is resigning his seat in Congress effective later this year, eventually setting up a special election to succeed him.” In August, Robert Novak reported that Hastert would resign effective Nov. 6.

  20. Jackie says:

Hastert did good he covered up for Fingers Foley as Foley continue to molest kids without being stopped. Hastert got his suitcase full of Saddam’s stolen money from Iraq. All the contracts that he let friends have for a profit. Looks like Hastert did good and put his money in off shore accounts so when the investigation comes he will say he has none of the money anymore.
Cheney is working fast putting his stolen money off shore for protection. As each Criminal Law Maker resigns they are protecting their stolen loot.

MY POINT EXACTLY! (from one carnivore to another…)

Beef!!! It’s not just for dinner, anymore!!!

Ever see the episode of the Simpsons where Marge breaks Homer’s jaw? Of course, Homer gets his jaw wired shut, and at one point, he asks Marge to make him a prime rib smoothie.

Ah yes… The Prime Rib Smoothie…

    This is politically motivted.

  31. Anonymouse says:

Can anyone provide some historical context for this? I’m culling my admittedly fuzzy memory of this sort of thing, and can’t for the life of me remember when so many (of either party) resigned in such a short time.

I also can’t remember when a senior politician resigned in the middle of his/her term, unless compelled by health or scandal.

The DC Madam was the first thing that popped into my mind, as well. Could it be that this was part of a negotiated settlement? Not the sort that includes the judiciary, but the sort that meets in smoky rooms and protects the party at all cost.

    Curiouser and curiouser.

ask Sibel Edmonds why Hastert is resigning… i bet she has a story to tell!
    wait — she’s been gagged by Ashcroft….

  34. araratararat says:

David Rosen, author of the Vanity Fair piece, writes that some of the FBI wiretaps Edmonds had access to involved conversations among council members and Turkish officials about bribing elected officials and “ contained what sounded like references to large-scale drug shipments and other crimes.” One official who figured prominently in the conversations was Cong. Dennis Hastert. Rosen reports that FBI wiretap targets boasted “that they had a covert relationship with a very senior politician indeed—Dennis Hastert, Republican congressman from Illinois and Speaker of the House since 1999. The targets reportedly discussed giving Hastert tens of thousands of dollars in surreptitious payments in exchange for political favors and information.” Rosen points to Hastert’s about-face in 2000 regarding the then-proposed House resolution calling for recognition of the Armenian genocide in Turkey, which was mentioned in the FBI-monitored conversations. After publicly backing the resolution, Hastert abruptly withdrew his support, arguing that President Clinton was concerned it would harm U.S. interests in Turkey.

i am glad to know that people remember Sibel Edmonds!

  38. missmolly says:

So how many Republicans does this make so far?

  39. Jason M. Hendler says:

Hastert was a weak leader – Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay were the true visionaries and implementers of the Republican Revolution. Spineless Reps gave in to whining libs and put Hastert in charge. Boehner and Blunt are now kicking the crap out of Pelosi.

The only one worse was Bill Frist, and fortunately, Mitch McConnell and Trent Lott are making things happen now.

  40. ignatov says:

“So how many Republicans does this make so far?”

Young Turks put the number at 17 from both houses this morning.

  41. Nevar says:

“…Hastert would resign effective Nov. 6″

Indictments to follow, by April 15th…

  42. Bush is a four letter word says:

Given his do-nothing record, his transition to retirement should be almost invisible.
