Breaking: House conservatives sustain Bush’s SCHIP veto.

The House today failed to override President Bush’s SCHIP veto. The final roll call was 273 to 156, falling 13 votes short of the two-thirds majority needed. This vote picked up eight supporters from the original House vote in September.

UPDATE: The Gavel has video from the debate HERE. After the vote, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) promised, “In the coming days, Democrats will not back down and we will insist on providing health care coverage to these 10 million children.”

UPDATE II:We won this round on SCHIP,” White House press secretary Dana Perino said after the vote.

UPDATE III: Full roll call vote HERE. Forty-four Republicans joined the Democrats in voting for the override, and two Democrats — Reps. Gene Taylor (MS) and Jim Marshall (GA) — voted “nay.”

I’m sure all those good little bootlicking toady Repukes can feel all good about themselves now for having prevented all that waste of taxpayers money taking care of sick American kids!!

    YAY!!

  3. raynman says:

Thanks to the rabid right wingers who’ve managed to make this issue much more visible and much more visceral, the Republicans in Congress show that, just like their Democratic counterparts, they have no idea what the people they represent actually think.

More so than the war in Iraq (and that’s rather sad, but it is true), the concept of attacking children to defend their positions will come back to haunt each and every one who did not vote to override the veto.

Why do Republicans hate their constituents?

I see the only Democrat who voted “nay” was Jim Marshall, from central Georgia.

oops, my bad — I missed Gene Taylor. It’s tough to see the non-italicized names!

It’s OK, it’s another stone to hang around the Republicans’ necks as they sink beneath the waves. it can be fixed next time around. They’re just speeding up their sprint to oblivion and irrelevance.

Looks like “socialized medicine” only goes to those in elected office who would vote to keep others from the same healthcare the government provides for them.

So did Gene Taylor. Hurricane Katrina didn’t bother any of his kids?

  16. The Dogfather says:

They oughta shove the same bill up Bush’s a$$ again, and keep shoving it up there until he cries “Uncle” (or at least “Uncle Larry Craig”).

Lefty, I wish I could agree with you that it’ll be another stone around the repukes’ necks. However, with the spineless dems we have in Congress now, they’ll work out a watered-down “compromise” bill foisted on them by BushCo that will screw those “rich” kids whose parents make the outrageous sum of $50K/year. Thereby allowing Bush and the repukes the political cover next fall that they need when they can say they didn’t oppose S-CHIP after all…

    Disgusting and pathetic.

  17. whiteyfresh says:

Now that the Bill has failed, maybe we can go back to the ORIGINAL SCHIP bill that the Dems wanted. The one that paid for the expansion with cuts to corporate tax breaks and corporate ‘welfare’ programs, and well as insurance company tax break repeals. Well, the Repudes didn’t want THAT, no sirree…So the REPUBLICANS came up with the Tobacco hike. THEN used that as an attack point to defeat the override.

    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR…

I’d like to show a few people just how “relevent” my boot is to their A$$!!!!!!!!!!!!

  18. Jason M. Hendler says:

Pelosi is just tone deaf. Her tactics work only if you are the minority party, not the majority.

    er, given a spanking…

Idiots that have been posting support for the flake Ron Paul should take note of this.

Being from Texas, I have watched Paul a lot over the years. He now claims not to be racist, but in his old newsletter, he sure was. So its not a surprise tome that a lot of hatemonger sites are showing support for him right now.

**expecting flames from Ron Paul supporting fools.

  23. VerbalKint says:

Ron Paul is an anti-government extremist. His beliefs about government are bizarre for the most part. All Libertarians are racist, and Ron Paul is no exeption. Ask any Libertarian what they think about civil rights laws and their racist streak will be exposed. Ron Paul is just lucky that he getting a pass on that question. It is just one of the many heinous Libertarian positions he is hiding. Maybe if some of these “Ron Paul supporting fools” knew anything about Libertarian ideology, they wouldn’t be supporting him.

  28. Spudge Boy says:

    Ron Paul is a Libertarian.

“Libertarianism is a political philosophy that upholds the principle of individual liberty. Libertarians maintain that all persons are the absolute owners of their own lives, and should be free to do whatever they wish with their persons or property, provided they allow others the same liberty.”

By “should be free to do whatever they wish with their persons or property” They mean that they should be able to shoot heroin, as long as they don’t bother anybody else.

By “all persons are the absolute owners of their own lives” they mean that there shouldn’t be a police force or fire department. If your house catches on fire, you should put it out yourself.

I have seen Bill Maher ask Paul these kinds of questions and he refuses to answer them, because he knows his support would tank if he answered truthfully.

  35. Art says:

“Said White House press secretary Dana Perino: “We won this round on SCHIP.” Noting a million-dollar lobbying campaign by several labor unions and advocacy groups that aimed to turn enough Republican votes for a successful override, she said: “It didn’t work.”"

What advocacy groups and who are they advocating?

I’m just interested in knowing who is against American children.

No surprise that 156 representatives whose families receive free government healthcare (even though they can well afford their own) voted to deny about 700,000 CHILDREN of hard working, downward sliding middle class families the care they so sorely NEED. How about making these government employees pay their own way and strip them of their cushy lifelong free healthcare or at least contribute on a par with the average American (deductions, copayments) while employed by the Gov’t and after they leave their positions they should fend for themselves just like the rest of us?

Wayne mentioned racist remarks made by Ron Paul in a newsletter. I did a little searching and quickly found these statements made by Ron Paul:

A 1992 newsletter by Republican congressional candidate Ron Paul highlighted portrayals of blacks as criminally inclined and lacking sense about top political issues.

Reporting on gang crime in Los Angeles, Paul commented: “If you have ever been robbed by a black teen-aged male, you know how unbelievably fleet-footed they can be.”

…”Given the inefficiencies of what DC laughingly calls the criminal justice system, I think we can safely assume that 95 percent of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.”

He also wrote: “Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5 percent of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market, individual liberty and the end of welfare and affirmative action.”

  53. MarkD says:

It’s good to know the White House and the GOP think providing health insurance for children is nothing more than a game to be won.

And all this time I thought their lives were more important than some notion of winning and losing.

    Guess not.

Just remember, folks: For these people, the “culture of life” stops the minute you’re born.

    .

  54. Bush is a four letter word says:

All children, everywhere, should have free medical coverage. It’s just looking out for our own best interests. Choosing to limit the coverage based on a family income of $61,950 though changes the equation.

Why that amount? How can someone say that is is a fair amount, when the average family in their district earns less and gets by just fine?

Turn it on or turn it off, but screw the dimmer switch.

  57. MeYeZone says:

Whitehouse talking-head Dana Perino has the chutzpah to claim victory. Huh? So the nutjobs in the whitehouse are happy that they are depriving children of health insurance. Nice. I know what you mean. I got into a shouting match the other day when I confronted a couple of 20 somethings carrying a Ron Paul for President sign on our city street. I simply asked them what he stood for. They said “He wants to end the war in Iraq”. I asked them what else he stood for and they couldn’t name one other thing. I told them that he was a libertarian and what they stand for and the two girls got really upset with me and said I was lying about Ron Paul. I ended the conversation by telling them to go home and Google Paul to see what his real beliefs are and then see if they want to carry that sign around our town again. I don’t know if it made a difference but I haven’t seen them around town since then.

You know how you hear about a Senator who put a “secret hold” on a piece of legislation (usually a Republican), well Dodd put the hold on the legislation but he didn’t make it a secret! Good on him! Now if a few more Senators could show some of this courage. I’ve been thinking lately about what has happened to Russ Feingold. I haven’t heard hide nor hare from him in a long time. Has he given up on our government? This move by Dodd is one I could see Feingold making.

I am glad this happened. This is exactly what is wrong with the Republicans and the Democrats… They have stupid solutions for serious problems. If you want a decent health care system then listen to Kucinich and ATTACK the problem itself… All we want is a way to coordinate our health care money so we get the best possible service for ALL humans in this country without getting cornholed for wallstreet profits… isnt there a REAL solution for this? Those of you that blab BS about Ron Paul are just as easy to call out as the neo cons… because you refuse to do your homework because you STILL believe in the DNC… THEY FAILED… or they were in on it with Bush from the start… The ONLY major negative I can see for the left with Ron Paul is his abortion stance… and unlike the nutty right wingers he does NOT want to put his religion into law… BUT this only means that the Pro-Choice people would need to work on a state by state basis instead of at the federal level… The trade off of harder work in order to get the federal government under control is WELL worth it…

You forgot one other thing Libertarians hate. Like all racists, Libertarians hate Civil Rights Laws. They would return us to Jim Crow.

More bullsh!t. This sounds like the kind of mindless drivel we hear about “liberals” from our trolls.

You need to get out more. There certainly are racist libertarians and there are a fair number of “libertarians” that are simply Republican wolves in sheep’s clothing. But to characterize libertarians as inherently racist is just bullsh!t, plain and simple.

    Comment by gummitch — October 18, 2007 @ 3:22 pm

You are either yet another of the ignorant fools who support Ron Paul without understanding Libertarian ideology, or you are yet another Libertarian who is attempting to hide the true Libertarian agenda, as is Ron Paul. Libertarians wish to repeal Civil Rights Laws. That is an inherently racist position.

  87. bilbobaggins says:

Violating the smokers with a sin tax to pay for health care for children is attempted instead of actually solving the problem of the need for universal health care… we dont need mommy and daddy from Washington trying to force smokers to stop smoking.

This was not originally how the Democrats wanted to finance the bill. Taxing smokers was a Republican idea. The Democrats wanted to finance it by taking back tax breaks for the rich and corporations. Of course that didn’t pass muster with the RepubliCONS.

In the long run no it is not racist. In the long run racism will subside and then people can rely on the Constitutions rights for ALL people. Fixing the economy to put the power in the hands of the wealthly elite made it impossible for poor minorities to make their own individual ways out of oppression.

What you Ron Paul bashers keep “conveniently” forgetting is that there is more than one issue and all these issues are tied together. The approach of following the Constitution solves all these problems at once. However just like with SOCIAL SECURITY Ron Paul has said he will NOT quickly change everything for everybody… that would HARM people… his goal is to get this country changed into a new direction that would make Civil Rights laws unneccessary… it would make the War on Drugs unneccessary… it would make going to war for oil unneccessary…. if you cherry pick one issue then you can bash anyone on it… that is not what Ron Paul is running on … single issues… he is running on the PROMISE that was written into the Constitution for ALL MEN….

Then dont do it at all… these stupid half ass bandaids just continue the corruption of the federal government….

The democrats seem to weak in the knees to actually try to solve problems… they just dont want to make any waves…

All Americans should have the same health care as our representatives and senators. They should give up theirs until we have free health care for all for life. Why should some of the wealthiest people in the nation be given such a plan? All Americans should have the same entitlement.

LOL! Right buddy. You are not the first Libertarian to try and blow that smoke up my ass. Your plan worked really well between 1865 and 1964 didn’t it. Anyone who wants to go back to Jim Crow is a racist. Once the general public finds out that you Libertarians want to repeal Civil Rights Laws, Ron Paul won’t be able to get elected dogcatcher.

  95. ggibson1 says:

    Comment by shoeless

Just take that libertarian label and throw it in the trash. It means nothing to most Ron Paul supporters… we dont come from a party … we are people that have been picking the lesser of two evils in both parties…

And your explanation about why you laughed at the Constitution is the same as the neo cons give about why Islam must be destroyed… just because the PAST has not worked out like we wanted we must continue acting like idiots on into the future…. the CONSTITUTION has NOT been tried from 1865 to 1964…. republican bandaids on top of democrat bandaids on top of republican bandaids on top of democrat bandaids is ALL we have had… The PROMISE of the Constitution is NOT Jim Crow and it is NOT Civil Rights… Civil Rights is a temporary bandaid to help counter balance those that refuse to treat others as they themselves want to be treated. If the Constitution was ENFORCED in all areas then Civil Rights would not be neccessary… If the Federal Reserve was not allow to give special treatment to the rich elite then minorities would be able to go to good schools and have good jobs … if the Constitution was ENFORCED no one would be forced to sit at the back of a bus because ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL… that is not in the Civil Rights laws… it is in the Constitution.

As far as repealing laws go YES… We want to repeal ALL laws that are not allowed in the Constitution and we want to ENFORCE all laws in the Constitution EVENLY which would make Civil Rights unneccessary. HOWEVER… we only want to do this GRADUALLY… and if you had EVER did any research on Ron Paul you would know this because he makes a big deal out of how things must be changed CAREFULLY so that people do not get hurt…

  96. OxyCon says:

Sixteen months from now, the Repubs will not be crowing so loud, as the Democrats stuff an entirely different S-CHIP program up their derriers, when the Democrats control all three branches of government.
This was the best compromise S-CHIP bill the Repubs are going to see. The next one will be entirely Democratic written and sponsored.
So, to condense, the Repubs won this battle, but they will lose this war badly.

Let me guess your kind has the signs for 2012 already made right? And they say, “FOUR MORE YEARS!!!” …

Meet the new boss… same as the old boss…

Its amazing… after seven years you would think people on the left would have learned something… guess not… stop playing the game and join us Ron Paul supporters to actually CHANGE this country… do you just want to keep protesting year after year or do you want to actually DO something to change things?

  98. OxyCon says:

    Holy cow!
Wuff Blitzer just repeated what I said: ” the Repubs won this battle, but they will lose this war on S-CHIP”.

  99. muckdog says:

Phew, good news for all of us (except the lazy folks).

The Republicans are going to propose the following:

    1) A full reauthorization of SCHIP. The program would continue to cover children in families with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty level;

    2) A child health care tax credit. Rather than putting more people on a government-run program, the legislation advances tax credits to families with incomes between 200% and 300% of the poverty level; and

    3) A health care “federalism” initiative. This piece would complement both the reauthorization and the tax changes in expanding health care coverage, and would encourage even more dramatic health care experimentation at the state level with different approaches to coverage expansion.

  100. ggibson1 says:

Yet Ron Paul wants to reduce government to the point that this wouldn’t be possible to happen. Yet another Libertarian contradiction!

    Comment by republicans hate facts

    WRONG….

Reducing the federal government in roles that it has no business operating in is NOT the same as ENFORCING those things that the Constitution set aside for the federal government… the Constitution does NOT say that the federal government has no powers… and neither does Ron Paul…. it is amazing how neoconish people are here are sounding…

  101. Great Frybread King says:

The Dems and the Cons who support expanding SCHIP by $35 billion of the next five years need to remain steadfast and re-introduce a similar bill.

  102. drtichy says:

I am one of those who “were” expecting the Dems to do something in Congress. And I am already frustrated and angry. They were the only hope against the GOP mafia!

Why didn’t the veto to the vetoed CHIP pass today? Just because the DEMS are a bunch of COWARDS – final conclusion. Had they told the President that there will not be a penny more for Iraq if this doesn’t pass, it would have been different.

But guess what? They are going to approve the next BILLIONS for Bush again next time, too – and with their tails between their legs! Wanna bet?

It would have been so easy: “Mr. President, no honey no money!” Honey would be Bush signing the CHIP. Money is the fortune he is going to waste in Iraq again very soon – to have more of our kids killed there. And Halliburton et alli getting a big slice of it.

What happened to AMERICA? Why is America so sick now?????

  103. muckdog says:

RHF, why wouldn’t the Frosts qualify? They make 45K, right?

  104. ggibson1 says:

Sorry but it is! One major part of the Libertarian plan is deregulation, how exactly are you supposed to ENFORCE when you don’t REGULATE?

    #1 Who cares about libertarians?

#2 You ENFORCE by sending in TROOPS just like George Washington did with the whisky rebellion and as was done during the Civil War… and as was done during the Civil Rights era… of coarse you dont have to jump straight to that but if things got bad enough the precendence is there to do exactly that.

No, he says those powers are limited to 18th century AGRARIAN requirements – otherwise known as just past ANARCHY!

Grow up and accept that you live in a civilized society, or MOVE OUT!

    Comment by republicans hate facts

Listen Rush Limbaugh you can dump that love it or leave it NON arguement…

Your 18th century talk is what people around here usually call a straw man. HOW exactly is what our founding fathers made “anarchy”? Where is the real man here? All I see is straw.

Where do you get off calling the U.S. Constitution old and outdated? That document was the culmination of many years of many BRILLIANT men that changed the world in more ways than just the U.S. Constitution. They were collectively FAR smarter than you or I… They WERE civilized and WE are technologically superior but our humanity has changed little….

  105. ggibson1 says:

People that opine about returning to the ORIGINAL constitution don’t want the civilization that is reflected in the amendments and context that is placed on a modern civilized world!

    Another straw man…

ok … you had a few chances .. you get what I am saying and you are not even trying so…

Yeah, because we still have slaves, and sell women as a standard practice today! Catch a clue!

    Comment by republicans hate facts

Oh how enlightened of you… yes you are correct… the great acts of history NEVER repeat themselves… all Shakespearian tragedies are only left overs of the period before the 20th century… humans are beyond that now… I am sure the Iraqis agree…

  106. ggibson1 says:

So every act of corporate negligence, poisoning, poor standards, fake labels, roads, infrastructure, schools, all require the military? That’s ridiculous!

How could you post what I said and then immediately post something like this? It was right there in your face…

Comment by ggibson1

Come on… you are no better than one of the lame trolls…

Or are you THAT desperate to try to make Ron Paul seem crazy?

The federal government can go as far as it needs to for ensuring the continued existance of the nation (civil war) and to enforce the Constitution. If a company is poisoning us then you send in the Executive to enforce the laws. You can do anything UP TO force as long as the executive does not violate the Constitution while doing so.

Bigfoot, you can go f@ck yourself. This is your country as much as Germany was the country of Hitler’s thugs, who like your ilk, bullied, threatened, and terrorized thier way into control. You dont own this country, you hijacked it, with the help of 19 brown folks and thier boxcutters.

And I promise you something, before I leave this earth, I’m going to make sure that many, many of the totalitarian constitution shredders you worship will be exposed, sued, and/or in jail. I’m going to do more for my cause than sit on a keyboard arguing all day. Every arrogant, ignorant word that comes out of the deluded lips of inbred, xenophobic, flaghumping jingoistic trash like yourself and YOUR president makes me ever more determined to show the world what scum people like you and everyone you support are. So thanks for the motivation…
