Christmas: enraging liberals since 1 A.D.

Comment by Rovian Stormtrooper Commander — October 18, 2007 @ 5:50 pm

And yet, liberals are the ones fighting for health care for children. Mr Rovian, I would rather be on the side of atheists with a concience than on the side of Stormtroopers like you. You might celebrate Xmas but , you don't know what Xmas is all about!

I understand what you're saying and I would never try to impose my own beliefs on anybody else. I was just curious about Marcus' comment, that's all.

Ok, apparently it was the language filters, even though I bleeped out "F***, Yeah!", albeit not quite so thoroughly as this time.

Sorry Marcus, but Bill O’Reilly doesn’t own Xmas. As far as keeping it out of your face, aren’t you being a bit unreasonable? What is it about Xmas that makes you feel that way? I’d like to know.

Comment by foreyes — October 20, 2007 @ 5:28 am

How about some perspective, Foreyes. First, full disclosure, I am an atheist who loves Christmas and the holidays. It is overall a fun, pleasant time of the year for me.

However, I loathe professional sports. The idea of watching someone else play sports seems silly to me. Playing sports? Oh, yeah, that is fun. Watching someone else? Ummm, no. I'd rather bang my head against a wall. The constant driving around in vehicles laden with Team America ("F***, yeah!") colors, screaming their love for Team America ("F***, yeah!"), honking and yelling at other cars and pedestrians their support for Team America ("F***, yeah!"). Endlessly trying to involve those who've expressly disclosed their lack of interest or extreme dislike of sports into conversations about Team America ("F***, yeah!"), or about Team America's ("F***, yeah!") Sports Star X!

Now, picture it if, from Halloween until the New Year, everywhere you turn there is Team America ("F***, yeah!") product in every store regardless of their connection to sports otherwise. Imagine endless Team America ("F***, yeah!") music on the radio for those months. Imagine every retailer, half the people on the street, and television utterly dominated by greeting and salutations of "Go, Team America! ("F***, yeah!")"

That would drive me completely and utterly batty. I'd be ready to choke a b*tch pretty damned quickly, especially is such a phenomenon began to occur every year of my life.

THAT is what is must be like for those who hate Christmas, and don't want it shoved in their faces every year. So really, have some empathy.

My first thought was to kick Bill O’Reilly square in the nuts. I hate Xmas and Xmas music. Better keep that shit out of my face.

What a silly, stupid cause.

Comment by Candyce — October 18, 2007 @ 5:52 pm

It’s not a cause, it’s a distraction. They need to do everything they can to hold on to that 24%, even if it means bringing out old, worn out games. After all, it’s all they’ve got.

More than a cause or a distraction -- it's a COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITY! Only in America can somebody find a way to make money off of anything.

Secondly, we celebrate TWO occasions that time of year. Why would I not want to wish someone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thus the plural at the end of Holiday.

This is how I remember the practice being explained to me, about 40 years ago. It's only been in the last few years - when some Christians developed their absurd persecution complex - that it has become a "War on Christmas."

Shouldn't Christmas be a uniter, not a divider?

I envision a bumper sticker with Santa, Rudolph, Frosty, and Elf and a Gingerbread man on one side and Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, a Shepherd and an Angel on the other, both groups pointing rifles at each other and shooting it out.

As a practicing Christian, I find the "war on Christmas" quite humorous.
Why do we put so much "stock" in the birth of our savior? It's the resurrection that is of most importance for us. And isn't the spend spend spend mentality leading up to Dec 25th go against His preaching of helping the poor?

Anyways, when I worked in a public pharmacy, I always answered the phones "Happy Holidays..." around Dec 24th (way before it was politically incorrect). Why? Two reasons, one because it was respectful to non Christians. ( I would feel uncomfortable if a clerk wished me a Happy Hannakah or a Blessed Ramadan, since I don't know anything about those holidays). Secondly, we celebrate TWO occasions that time of year. Why would I not want to wish someone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Thus the plural at the end of Holiday.
Anyone who gets stressed about such non issues as not addressing every patron "Merry Christmas", really, really REALLY needs to re-evaluate their life!!!

I'm in charge of a Sunday School. I start the day with Bible reading and prayer. I run a youth group at my church. I'm a liturgical musician married to a clergyperson. I believe in the divinity, death, and resurrection of Jesus. I'm a liberal who subscribes to Sojourners magazine. Not only I would very much like to get the the bumper sticker "Merry Mas" I'd like to start a web site devoted to jihad against Christmas. The one person most offended by that idea is a friend who is a non-observant Jew, lawyer at the ACLU who absolutely loves secular, figgy pudding, mall-decorated Christmas. The posters who put up the lies on this thread should just be to be ignored. Their irrelevance grows daily. Let them join my Jewish friend in celebrating a minor Christian holiday and tell their fairy tales about Christmas (ever compare the three nativity stories in the 4 Gospels, "believers"?)

We will have to agree to disagree as compared to the wonderous meals I have enjoyed in Mexico, this east coast bullshit pretend stuff is indeed bad. Sorry to disagree but the mainstreaming of cuisine just turns it into a cryovaked reheat world

There is no such thing as "shitty Mexican food". Anyone who has tasted it wil tell you so, sorry but you're wrong.

Clearly these days mean so very much to you at a very deep and meaningful level. How do you feel about the hijacking of such important aspects of your spiritual being by the glorification of alcohol by those industries which profit from green beer and shitty Mexican food.

Except of course St. Patrick’s Day and Cinco De Mayo.

Both of them are favorites of mine, not being a Mexican. El batallon St. Patrick went over to the Mexican side when they realized that it was a war for territory. They were later hung as traitors. Talk about ethics on the American side, will you.

Hi Foreyes:
Might you be mistaking me for someone else? I don't remember any history of saying anything whatsoever about "republican imposition of beliefs" As to holidays I think everyone should enjoy them however they want. Except of course St. Patrick's Day and Cinco De Mayo.

Why are Christians so protective of their Pagan holidays?

Comment by dbadass — October 19, 2007 @ 12:33 am

Maybe because they are OUR holidays! Aren't you always complaining about Republican imposition of beliefs? Why would you want to do the same? I respect your atheism, please respect my Chistianism. Is that fair?
