Today on the House floor, Rep. Steve King (R-IA) introduced a new name for the acronym SCHIP — “Socialized Clinton-style Hillarycare for Illegals and their Parents”:

For the record, SCHIP stands for the “State Children’s Health Insurance Program” and does not cover undocumented immigrants. Not surprisingly, King voted today to sustain Bush’s SCHIP veto.
(HT: Sadly, No!)
UPDATE: Earlier this week, Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) told USA Today that he refers to SCHIP as “Socialized, Cuba-style Health care for Illegals and their Parents.”
King needs a new gag writer. That’s already an oldie. And it wasn’t even all that clever when it was fresh.
October 18th, 2007 at 2:47 pmThat is a truly disgusting and immature ploy.
October 18th, 2007 at 2:49 pmShouldn’t King be looking for those WMDs in Iraq he says he knows about?
October 18th, 2007 at 2:49 pm#1 — Looks like he’s recycling the chart then, since this screenshot is from the live debate this morning.
October 18th, 2007 at 2:49 pmOops! Wrong King. Peter King said he knew where the WMDs were. But this Kings sounds like every bit as much of a jackass as that King.
October 18th, 2007 at 2:49 pmThe Democrats need to say something about this now. They need to stop playing nice and start throwing these things right back at the Republicans. They look like wimps now.
October 18th, 2007 at 2:50 pmThis guy is a total tool. I’m sad to say that he’s from my former home state. I watched him in a debate back when I was in college about gay rights. I seriously don’t understand how people can think like this guy!
I should digg out the video and post it on youtube or something!
October 18th, 2007 at 2:50 pmRep. Steven King is far scarier than author Steven King. Truly the uninformed blind leading the blind. Someone stear them toward a cliff, please. Stupid lemmings.
October 18th, 2007 at 2:51 pmJeez, I’m surprised this stupid stunt alone wasn’t enough to convince some of the “Nay” votes to change their minds and vote for the program.
It’s astounding how childish some of these people really are. It’s like friggin’ recess.

So he referred to the Clinton’s twice? Couldn’t he have come up with another one, rather than doing a one for two deal with Hillarycare and clinton?? What a loser.

October 18th, 2007 at 3:03 pmHmmm, 80% of the public are in favor of extending SCHIP. And now SCHIP = Hillary Clinton style Healthcare. I guess that says it all.
October 18th, 2007 at 3:03 pm‘Clinton-style Hillarycare’?
Someone should tell Rep. King that SCHIP is a program initiated by the Republican controlled Congress in 1997.

This is easy to get around. Look for his street address. Then enter his street address, city, state and zip as your address. That will get you past his filters. I do this all the time with Harry Reid because Reid doesn’t have the courage to have a Senate Majority Leader website where any American can send him a message. At least that’s one point in Pelosi’s favor. She does have a Speaker of the House website where any American can send her a message. I do this every morning with my first Latte. Then I send one to Harry. I’m sure they are both royally sick of hearing from me but I don’t care. It makes me feel better. Besides, I’m sure neither of them have ever read my emails.

I’ll take socialized medicine over the present system of insurance companies raping, pillaging and screwing over the little guy, any day.
October 18th, 2007 at 3:50 pmYou all know that would be the next step if this vast expansion into socialized medicine passed. Socialized medicine for all children (up to the age of 25), including illegals (who would all be made legal) would be next if the MoveOnocrats had their way. And somehow we’d manage to pay for it all (so they would claim) by only taxing the top 1% of wage-earners and “the evil corporations.â€
Of course you know that immigrants are excluded from being able to join this program. You wouldn’t want to lie to anyone, would you? What am I saying, lying is your modus operandi.
And yes, we could pay for a lot of social programs if we need by rescinding the tax break for the top 1% of wage earners and by making the corporations pay their fair share of income taxes in this country.
I have a question for you. Do you think it is OK for a US corporation to incorporate in the Caymen Islands (one house in the Caymen islands is home to over 14,000 corporations) just so they can get out of paying US income taxes?
Did you know that if we went back to taking corporations at the same rate they were taxed when Eisenhower was president we could pay off the huge national deficit Bush has rung up in one year?

Comment by ralph the wonder llama
No, there is nothing to it. The program specifically excludes undocumented aliens. It is nothing more than a figment of the neoCONS imagination and thrown in to confuse the issue. Apparently no one is buying it since 80% of Americans support expanding SCHIP. That’s a lot of Republicans in there. The Republicans running for office ignore their constituents at their own peril.
October 18th, 2007 at 3:53 pmComment by TCDon — October 18, 2007 @ 3:39 pm
I don’t even know where to start. First of all the logic itself is stupid. Don’t argue the downfalls of what you think the NEXT SCHIP bill will contain. That is not a valid argument. The current bill does not cover illegals. It does not cover “all children up to 25″. If you have a problem when they try to pass the bill that does all the things you think are so horrid (which aren’t by the way), fight against that bill when it is on the floor of our congress.
Now, something being “socialized” does not make it inherently bad. We have socialized Police. We have socialized Fire Fighters. We have socialized road maintenance. We have socialized education. You need to provide EVIDENCE and logical arguments that illustrate the negative impact on society. You have not done that – only shown how to create a straw man (and poorly at that).

Good point, Pete. This stunt, while being incredibly childish, also puts the GOP on the far side of the debate. In other words, where the SCHIP program was originally a bipartisan, very popular and effective solution to a critical problem, this guy King has very visibly placed himself and his party in the position of criticizing the ENTIRE PROGRAM.
Good luck with that, guys.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA TCDon. You’re so funny. Now kiss your Republican party goodbye.
October 18th, 2007 at 4:20 pmPerhaps TCDon and all the other right-wing hypocrites/liars on SCHIP haven’t read their own private health insurance forms lately. Almost to a plan, private health insurers offer coverage to people up to the age of 25 IF they are (1) living with their parents at home,(2) in college, and (3) unmarried*. Most plans will also cover people OVER 25 who are totally dependent on their parents and/or legal guardians. Notably, this usually refers to those who suffer from severe physical disabilities or mental retardation; of course, these conditions have to have come about AFTER the parents enrolled in the health plans, especially in the last 15-20 years, since almost every health insurance program has become stricter with the “pre-existing conditions” clause (I think some providers are now attempting to require pregnant women to have amnios in order to gauge the possibility that the child will be born with a “pre-existing condition” and raise the parents’ premiums accordingly).
*Most insurance carriers (whether health, life, homeowners, or auto) automatically cut off all coverage for any policyholder’s child who gets married, even before the age of 18.
October 18th, 2007 at 5:50 pmIt appears that everybody has missed the point here.
The issue isn’t health insurance, rather it’s the rising cost of healthcare. If we focused on what healthcare actually costs us, we would realize that the bureaucrats and insurance companies actually reap a large percentage of the overall health care costs in our society. When you go to the doctor, do you ask how much that x-ray will cost you? No–you merely ask if they take your insurance provider. This is ridiculous.
What we need to do is realize that to fix our system, we need more doctors and nurse-practicioners. Entry into med school should be focused on ability, not an arbitrary MCAT test. We need health care that is not driven by insurance schemes, but on placing patients and doctors in direct contact with one another in order to drive down health costs.
Then, we can focus on what we really need insurance for–catastrophic health care costs, i.e., cancer-treatment, etc.
For all those who supported the expansion of SCHIP beyond reason, you need to take a deep breath and relax. No one is against the children of our country, and it doesn’t make sense to add more burdens on their future potential by sadling more (state-sponsored insurance schemes) debt onto their future working shoulders.
October 18th, 2007 at 5:56 pmHey TCDon, did you ever think (well, of course not, as a neoCON, you DON’T think–you parrot, but I digress……) but many posters actually get time off from work–you know, a day or two off or a vacation. Some people even, you know, WORK FROM HOME. (Surely you’ve seen all the commercials for the companies that need “home workers”–and they’re not talking about maids and domestic servants.)
October 18th, 2007 at 6:05 pmHeck, some people might even be well-off enough to not need to work–not all multi-millionaires are right-wing heartless SOBs (read about Warren Buffett–I won’t say you’ll learn anything since right-wingers rarely “learn”). We liberals even have a history of wealthy individuals more concerned about their fellow humans, who genuinely believe that it’s the duty and obligation of government to help those who need help (that last bit sounds a little bit like words uttered by Dubya’s favorite philosopher).
I am a bit curious however. You posted an item at 3:39pm (EDT) and then didn’t post again until 5:39pm (EDT) and you *claim* that you “have to work for a living”. Here’s what has me curious: What kind of job keeps you SOOOOO busy for ONLY two hours that you weren’t “here to respond to all” those posts? There’s only one kind of job applies that I can think of. By any chance, you wouldn’t also be known as James Guckert or Jeff Gannon, would you?
Paul Reickhoff points out that beneficiaries of the S-CHIP program are frequently children of those in the military.

October 18th, 2007 at 9:20 pmThere was a big mis-information campaign by the Democrats when they mis-stated the results of a poll claiming that 80% of Americans supported the expansion of SCHIP.
The democrats were lying. Nothing new.
Most folks support the existing SCHIP program.
Most folks do not support expanding the SCHIP program.
“As you may know, the Democrats want to allow a family of four earning about $62,000 to qualify for the program. President Bush wants most of the increases to go to families earning less than $41,000. Whose side do you favor?”
When put in those terms, 52% agreed with Bush: 40% with the Democrats.

October 19th, 2007 at 12:11 amFascist Senator Attacks Women and Children to the Delight of Bush Administration!
Republicans danced in the streets today in true nationalist style as they watched their favorite storm trooper senator virtually bootstomp women, children and families in the streets. Their furvor rose to a fevered pitch as they chanted “heil to Bush”! Several Democratic senators joined in, chanting “down with the middle class, let them eat cake”. The democratic leadership is expected to bow to Bush and lick his boots early tomorrow morning at the Supreme Court, site of the 2000 coup. New language is being drafted that will promote the idea that poor children do not need education and should be put to work in the oil fields so they can afford their own health insurance. A brave but insignificant group of leftists stood on the sidelines foolishly chanting some crap about family values and the American Dream. On last thing. Why are the Democrats against having voters with a ID card? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
I hope the next time the Democrats put this bill up it wins…but without the grossly unfair tobacco tax. That was a Republican idea, an incredibly regressive tax…a sin tax, like all good Republicans love.
I also hope the media does a better job of talking about the funding plan for the bill next time than it did this time. The tobacco tax, of sixty-one cents per pack on every person who smokes, regardless of income, was all but kept secret.
SCHIP is a good program and deserves to be expanded. But everyone should be involved in paying for it, not just the demon du jour minority.
