Blackwater confiscated Iraqi planes.

By Amanda Terkel on Oct 19th, 2007 at 6:11 pm

Blackwater confiscated Iraqi planes.

Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) has revealed that “Blackwater USA tried to take at least two Iraqi military aircraft out of Iraq two years ago and refused to give the planes back when Iraqi officials sought to reclaim them.” Waxman today wrote to Blackwater CEO Erik Prince and requested that he “provide all documents related to the attempted shipment and to explain where the aircraft are now.”

  8. Jason says:

I learned in my international conflict and conflict resolution class that no war in history has been without an episode of rape and pillage, illustrating that no matter how well intentioned people want to be, war is ugly and makes people do ugly things.

Blackwater’s arrogant attitude toward its role in Iraq seems to be demonstrating this ugliness on a regular basis.

If a counterinsurgency strategy is primarily a political, hearts and minds campaign, why isn’t the military more adamant that Blackwater be expelled from Iraq so that their own mission isn’t more dangerous for them? I’d like to hear Gen. Petraeus explain why Blackwater continues to operate in that country and what he thinks they contribute to the overall campaign. Security for our diplomats shouldn’t put our strategic goals in jeopardy.

What exactly do you have to do to get denied by the U.S. government? Murder is ok, apparently.

  33. Veritas says:

Why in the world would a multi-million dollar company like Blackwater stoop so low as to steal Iraqi aircraft? Why would they have the hubris to believe that 1) they were entitled to steal from the Iraqi government and 2) that we would not find out about it?

Can you imagine how much they’ve already stolen from the war funding? This is over and above the amorally ridiculous contracts we’ve already granted them. This amounts to “legal stealing” from the taxpayers of this country. Now they’re caught red-handed stealing aircraft from Iraq?

Are we supposed to believe in our wildest of dreams or convoluted imaginings that there is anything “wholesome” about Blackwater at this point??

  34. Veritas says:

It is all part of the “Grand Plan”, in case anyone missed it, here is an article which explains much of this, if you have read it before, you might want to refresh your memory or just move on to the next post.

    America’s Holy Warriors

If you don’t have time to read it, and want a overview, here is an excerpt:

“Contracting out security to groups like Blackwater undermines our constitutional democracy,” said Michael Ratner, the president of the Center for Constitutional Rights. “Their actions may not be subject to constitutional limitations that apply to both federal and state officials and employees — including First Amendment and Fourth Amendment rights to be free from illegal searches and seizures. Unlike police officers they are not trained in protecting constitutional rights and unlike police officers or the military they have no system of accountability whether within their organization or outside it. These kind of paramilitary groups bring to mind Nazi Party brownshirts, functioning as an extrajudicial enforcement mechanism that can and does operate outside the law. The use of these paramilitary groups is an extremely dangerous threat to our rights.”

Is it time to take to the streets or is it too late? I’m guessing, it is too late!

  49. Ditch Mitch KY says:

Witch1 — We all owe Jeremy Scahill a huge debt of gratitude for exposing Erik Prince and Blackwater, but it will take diligence and hard work to offset the power of this massive mercenary army. We must get on this immediately.

We need a national discussion on Blackwater and the other 169 companies that operate in Iraq. We need accountability and oversight. We need Blackwater thugs out of Iraq, but where will they go and how will their extreme military training and actions outside the law impact our society? The Blackwater Scandal more proof of the absolute immorality of Bush’s War and Occupation of Iraq. Shame on Bush. Shame on Erik Prince. Shame on all of us for allowing this to happen.

    RE #48: America’s Holy Warriors

“If the United States falls into a period of instability caused by another catastrophic terrorist attack, an economic meltdown or a series of environmental disasters, these paramilitary forces, protected and assisted by fellow ideologues in the police and military, could swiftly abolish what is left of our eroding democracy… And the thugs with automatic weapons, black uniforms and wraparound sunglasses who appeared on street corners in Baghdad and New Orleans could appear on streets across the U.S. Such a presence could paralyze us with fear, leaving us unable to question or protest the closed system and secrecy of an emergent totalitarian state and unable to voice dissent.”

It is all true, but he is not directly involved with Blackwater. A firm he either was or is involved with advised Blackwater. I’m not sure how far we really want to take the “guilt by association” accusations here.

Headline: “Blackwater WANTED Iraqi Military Planes”

“Blackwater USA tried to TAKE at least two Iraqi military aircraft out of Iraq two years ago and refused to give the planes back when Iraqi officials sought to reclaim them…”

I don’t know what the words “WANTED” or “TAKE” mean.
I don’t care what the words “WANTED” or “TAKE” mean.
I’m not curious what the words “WANTED” or “TAKE” mean.
I won’t look up the words “WANTED” or “TAKE” in the dictionary.
And I’m not even gonna ask my friends what the words “WANTED” or “TAKE” mean.

I think the proper word they were looking for here is STEAL.
Once again, that’s STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL STEAL.

  67. Citizen_of_Earth says:

More on Blackwater from Oct. 15 issue of Newsweek.

“The colonel was furious. “Can you believe it? They actually drew their weapons on U.S. soldiers.” He was describing a 2006 car accident, in which an SUV full of Blackwater operatives had crashed into a U.S. ArmyHumvee on a street in Baghdad’s Green Zone. The colonel, who was involved in a follow-up investigation and spoke on the condition he not be named, said the Blackwater guards disarmed the U.S. Army soldiers and made them lie on the ground at gunpoint until they could disentangle the SUV. His account was confirmed by the head of another private security company. Asked to address this and other allegations in this story, Blackwater spokesperson Anne Tyrrell said, “This type of gossip has led to many soap operas in the press.”

“Whatever else Blackwater is or isn’t guilty of—a topic of intense interest in Washington—it has a well-earned reputation in Iraq for arrogance and high-handedness. Iraqis naturally have the most serious complaints; dozens have been killed by Blackwater operatives since the beginning of the war. But many American civilian and military officials in Iraq also have little sympathy for the private security company and its highly paid employees. With an uproar growing in Congress over Blackwater’s alleged excesses, the North Carolina-based company is finding few supporters.”

  68. TC-12 says:

The AP had trouble with wording one, so I’ll help ‘em out, care of the NBC News link below…

“Man Who Attempted To STEAL Car During Test Drive Arrested”
“Police said the suspect would contact people who were trying to sell their cars, take the vehicle for a test drive and then take off with it.”
    http://www.nbc10.com/news/14144180/detail.html?subid=10101521

Yeah, that sounds familiar. Like flying two Iraqi aircraft, presumably with permission from Iraqi authorities (like getting permission for a vehicle test drive), and then attempting to STEAL the planes by removing them from the country. Once again, the word is friggin’ STEAL.

  77. plunger says:

The flight officer at Minot AFB knew he had just released a flight with live nukes. The flight officer at Barksdale AFB knew he was in receipt of a flight live nukes. What happened next?

A two star general responsible for the AF region got a phone call. This “general” arranged for two “unnamed” officers to “report” the incident to Gannett and we are off to the races.

Keep in mind the next step. The Military Times cannot print ANYTHING without it being vetted by an officer. Either a full colonel or a brigadier. With a review of this post you will find that no fewer than four generals were involved in the order to get the missiles mounted on the B52 and no fewer than three in ANNOUNCING the event to the world.

This is mutiny. This is brass against brass. The senior officer who vetted the story for release knew he was “covered” by still higher ups [...] The Military Times, a division of Gannett media group, was ORDERED to release the story of the B-52 Nukes. Somebody from Washington DC with many stars gave that order. Somebody with so much juice that they knew they would survive.

The cabal is not popular with the US military. I will suggest that this is hope and that hope is good. The US military are what stand between us and martial law. Every officer signs his commission with the statement to uphold the US constitution. What if most of them do?

    http://winterpatriot.blogspot.com/

WMR has learned from military sources on both sides of the Atlantic that there was a definite connection between Israel’s OPERATION ORCHARD and BENT SPEAR involving the B-52 that flew the six nuclear-armed cruise missiles from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota to Barksdale. There is also a connection between these two events as the Pentagon’s highly-classified PROJECT CHECKMATE, a compartmented U.S. Air Force program that has been working on an attack plan for Iran since June 2007, around the same time that Cheney was working on the joint Israeli-U.S. attack scenario on Iran.

Command and control breakdowns involving U.S. nuclear weapons are unprecedented, except for that fact that the U.S. military is now waging an internal war against neo-cons who are embedded in the U.S. government and military chain of command who are intent on using nuclear weapons in a pre-emptive war with Iran.

CHECKMATE and OPERATION ORCHARD would have provided the cover for a pre-emptive U.S. and Israeli attack on Iran had it not been for BENT SPEAR involving the B-52. In on the plan to launch a pre-emptive attack on Iran involving nuclear weapons were, according to our sources, Cheney, National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley; members of the CHECKMATE team at the Pentagon, who have close connections to Israeli intelligence and pro-Israeli think tanks in Washington, including the Hudson Institute; British Foreign Secretary David Miliband, a political adviser to Tony Blair prior to becoming a Member of Parliament; Israeli political leaders like Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu; and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner, who did his part last week to ratchet up tensions with Iran by suggesting that war with Iran was a probability. Kouchner retracted his statement after the U.S. plans for Iran were delayed.

Blackwater desires military planes for what purpose. That desire right there obliterates their mandate to protect State Dept personnel.
That coupled with the drawing of weapons ON uS personnel, plant them SQUARELY as enemies of the state.

ALL military should be shooting these mercenaries on sight. And for each one, they get to put a little black bear paw on their gun.

DMK has noted above, but it is worth repeating —
if you have missed Jeremy Scahill on Bill Moyers’ show Friday night, please try to tune it in on re-runs or TiVo or OnDemand or whatever means you may have.
    Blackwater is a frightening organization.

I started to make some notes here, but there is just too much to write. View the program or read the book – and tell your friends.

After watching the PBS special on Cheney earlier this week (see if you can catch that on re-run too) and now this on Blackwater, I fear for the country my children and grandchildren will inherit.

Something that never made sense to me is why we need 180,000 mercenaries in Iraq to protect State Department employees. They don’t make that many visits to Iraq to justify that number of mercenaries. These people are, in fact, Bush and Chaney’s private army. That scares me much more than the so called “terrorists” who are going to follow us home. The “terrorists” are already here and they are our government.

  87. upside99 says:

When will someone ask Hil’s campaign for a FULL disclosure on campaign money and/or in-kind services from or indirectly from Blackwater :

Mark Penn is the chief strategist for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential campaign, working 24/7 on her behalf (indeed, he is known to send email at 2 a.m.) and earning tens of thousands of dollars in fees.

With that sort of day-and-night job, you would think Mr. Penn would have time for little else. Indeed, other Clinton senior advisers took leaves of absences or turned down clients in order to work for the campaign.

But he somehow manages to remain president of Burson-Marsteller, a publicly traded global public affairs firm. And as such, he is inevitably linked to Burson’s clients — not all of whom are, shall we say, on Mrs. Clinton’s Christmas card list.

Today we learned that recently one of those clients was Blackwater — the American contractor that provides security to some top American officials in Iraq, and which is under investigation for allegedly aggressive tactics and the role of its guards in the shooting at a Baghdad city square where 17 Iraqis were killed.

Mr. Penn was on a plane this afternoon and could not be reached for him; a phone message has been left for a Burson spokesman as well. But Mr. Penn and the spokesman told other news outlets today that Blackwater was only briefly a client in a temporary assignment for a Burson subsidiary, BKSH. That assignment involved preparing Blackwater for a recent hearing before Congress. Blackwater is no longer a client, said Mr. Penn, who added that he never worked on the piece of business himself.

“Through a personal relationship, BKSH, a subsidiary of Burson-Marsteller, helped Blackwater prepare for their recent hearing before Congress. With the hearing over, BKSH’s temporary engagement has ended,” said the Burson spokesman, Paul Cordasco.

A blog for the Nation and the Associated Press carried stories on the Burson-Blackwater connection first.

Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for the Clinton campaign, said that Mrs. Clinton had not asked Mr. Penn for an explanation about Blackwater — about which she has expressed concerns on the campaign trail — nor asked him to take a leave from Burson.

“Mark is an extremely valuable member of this team,” Mr. Wolfson said. “He is our senior strategist. Senator Clinton clearly believes Blackwater must be held accountable for its actions.”

IIf she doesn’t open up on this one, then she should be taken out at the knees. It makes her no different thatn Cheney!
