Fox News To Air Frank Gaffney’s ‘Alarmist’ ‘Unfair’ Documentary On Islam
This Saturday at 9 PM EST, Fox News will be airing Islam vs. Islamists, a documentary following “moderate Muslims who have challenged the ‘Islamists’ who espouse a more radical view of their religion“:
The producers, Martyn Burke, Frank Gaffney, and Alex Alexiev received “$675,000 in public funds from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting” for the project, which was originally slated to appear on PBS.
But in April, PBS decided against airing the film as part of its America at a Crossroads series. Burke leveled accusations of political bias, claiming that the network decided to pull the program “after he refused to fire” Gaffney and Alexiev, both of whom head the right-wing Center for Security Policy.
PBS’s actual complaints dealt with the film’s inaccuracies. The spokeswoman for WETA, a PBC affiliate, said, “It was about filmmaking and documentary standards. We had no problem with the argument laid out in the film.” PBS ombudsman Michael Getler explains:
In summarizing the various collective critiques by PBS and WETA officials, plus those of “Crossroads” host Robert MacNeil, these officials said of their suggestions: “In every instance they were predicated on the stated judgment that the content of the piece was potentially very strong, but that its presentation was flawed by incomplete storytelling, a limited focus that does not adequately corroborate the film’s conclusions, and a general lack of attention to the obligation of fairness, which requires that viewers have access to additional context and relevant information about a complex subject.”
Jeff Bieber, WETA’s executive producer for Crossroads, said that the film had “serious structural problems (and)…was irresponsible because the writing was alarmist, and it wasn’t fair.” PBS gave the producers the chance to make changes to the film, but they refused. Fox News, however, has taken them up on the opportunity to air these inaccuracies.
Gaffney’s prejudice against Muslims is well-know even in conservative circles. Right-wing activist Grover Norquist once called Gaffney a “sick, little bigot” for baselessly charging that various Muslim Bush administration officials have ties to terrorists.
Fox will air Islam vs. Islamists as part of a larger special, Inside Islam: Faith vs. Fanatics, which will also include interviews with Burke and Gaffney.

If PBS paid for the project, wouldn’t they own it? How can another station air this program? This would be like NBC playing CBS’s “Survivor.”

Michale was in the Navy for 5 years during the ’60’s and 70’s. And he is bragging about this? The draft was in effect during that time along with another illegal war - Vietnam. Those that joined the Navy during that time did so to avoid being drafted and sent to combat duty.
For the most part those that joined the Navy in those days, did so to avoid going into combat.

It was in the reports yesterday about the new nominee dumb shit. And every report they’ve done on abstinence shows it DOES NOT WORK. The reason they were passing out birth control in the junior high school is because three girls under age 13 were pregnant. You just spew the talking points instead of researching anything. You just said the President allowed Osama Bin Laden to escape, but if someone is taken out of power, they are overthrown. Osama Bin Laden is still out of power in Afghanistan, so he is still overthrown. About Iraq, I did not say he stopped terrorism, I said he stooped a terrorist supporting dictator. As for the increased terrorism, I could say, sometimes it’s darkest before dawn, or I could say the increased terrorist activity is a sign that Al Qaeda is afraid. If we weren’t a threat to their power, they would attack at their leisure. However, this is not the case. Al Qaeda is doing whatever they can to frighten the U.S. meaning, they are frightened of us. If you would like, I would be glad to go into a more in depth discussion of Iraq, but for now, I’ll move on. You say that it is all documented, so give a link, or even a reference. You have not been able to answer me in any rational way. You have resorted to mere muckslinging, meaningless cursing, and mindless ranting. It must be concluded from how you wrote, the sheer venom in your post, that you are very tired, afraid I’m right, incredably irrational, or a combination of the three. It’s interesting to see the venom for Christianity with a complete ignorance to what Islam does around the world. Bold oppression of other religions, women, homosexuals and everyone else that Progressive seem to otherwise defend. By all means hold extreme, partisan opinions if you wish but please be consistent. The war in Iraq was a tragic mistake. Bush should go down in history as the worst President of our great country. Agreed. But Islam has a violent nature far beyond any other organized religion.
