Conservatives Attack Gay Dumbledore; Claim Vindication For Jerry Falwell’s Homophobia

Rowling revealed for the first time that Albus Dumbledore, one of the central heroes in the record-breaking Harry Potter series, is in fact a gay man. Asked if Dumbledore, “who believed in the prevailing power of love,” had ever fallen “in love himself,” Rowling said that he once had with another male wizard.

While Rowling considers her novels to be a “prolonged argument for tolerance” and most fans were “thrilled with the announcement,” some conservative blogs are criticizing the revelation:

- Psycheout at Blogs 4 Brownback called it “revolting,” saying “Dumbledore is a gay homosexual who doesn’t deserve to live on G-d’s green earth.”

- At Redstate, dvdmsr says the revelation means that “Dumbledore was more flawed than I thought.”

- Don Surber wondered why the audience would “applaud” the revelation and suggested that Rowling was “knock[ing] the Christians” to “sell books.”

One prominent conservative blog, Newsbusters, is claiming that the revelation somehow vindicates the late Rev. Jerry Falwell, who was showered with ridicule in 1999 after declaring that one of the Teletubbies, Tinky Winky, was gay. Mark Finkelstein, a Republican official in upstate New York, writes that “somewhere, Jerry Falwell is smiling” about the news:

What’s that? It now turns out that Dumbledore is gay? That guy who was the headmaster at Harry Potter’s Hogwarts? Author J.K. Rowling said so herself? [...]

And while Falwell was thoroughly lambasted in the MSM for his suggestion, the Times tells us that Rowlings’s revelation inspired “applause.”

Somewhere, Jerry Falwell is smiling.

First, Harry Potter and the Teletubbies are completely unrelated. The sexual orientation of a character in one fictional world cannot vindicate claims about the sexual orientation of a separate character in a separate fictional world.

Even if Finkelstein’s larger point is that Falwell was right that some children’s entertainment include “undisclosed gay characters,” Falwell was wrong in his claim that the presence of a gay character is “damaging to the moral lives of children.” As Jacob Weisberg wrote in 1999, “there’s no scientific or psychological basis” for that claim:

There’s no scientific or psychological basis for believing that children are affected in their sexual development or eventual sexual orientation by exposure to homosexuality–on television or in real life. If the creators of cartoons are intentionally or unintentionally giving children the idea that gay people are part of the big, happy human family, that’s a good thing, not a bad one.

The audience applauded Rowling’s message because it was one of tolerance; Falwell was criticized because his one was of hatred, based on gay stereotypes. The need for tolerance is reinforced by the conservative blogosphere’s reaction to a fictional character being gay.

    LOL just mention homo’s and the rabid right loses it. Too funny. To be honest, I have read all of Rowling’s books, and I never once wondered about Dumbledore’s sexuality. Mainly because I don’t care, and it doesn’t effect the story in any way.

Well it takes one to know one as it wasn’t revealed until book 7 that Dumbledore has an interest in his class mate when he was young. Now Jerry doesn’t read the books nor did he know what would happen in the end so Jerry was either looking in the mirror or wished one of the people in the Harry Potter books was gay.

    It actually did cross my mind, reading the seventh book, because of his relationship with another young man, but it just sort of flitted past (heh).

    Yes, Dumbledore and Harry and the rest of the characters are fiction, but they’re real enough in the author’s imagination and in the imagination of millions of readers. And any good storyteller knows a lot more about the characters than ever ends up on the page of a book.

    Is this satire? From the comments I’ve read, evidently Daryll is a known quantity, so I guess my supposition is wrong.

    On that note, when I’ve had sexual urges, such as “Nice Rack”, or “The Things I Could Do With That”, they were momentary and fleeting, nothing requiring a prolonged reading of the bible.

    I’m thinking your heterosexual urges may not be heterosexual urges, but rather some deep seated psychosis which you should seek therapy for, before you hurt someone or yourself.

    I’m not having any problem about the fact that Dumbeldore is fictional. I mean, anyone who has even attempted to write is perfectly cognizant of the fact that one (as an author) has an entire universe of “facts” in one’s mind that never make it to paper. This is how the story and the characters achieve any level of nuance.

    Was Dubeldore gay in Rowlings’ mind when she was writing the series? It is entirely possible. Alternatively, is she just tweaking the collective noses of a vicious pack of monstrously stupid, self-righteous hypocrites for no other reason than because she can? Also very possible.

    What I’m having trouble with is whether “Daryll” is real, or just some sad caricature some one or more of y’all has manufactured to mess with my mind …

    I stayed at a hotel with no tv, no radio, no phones, and no kids. :)
    Very relaxing! Walked on the beach, fed fat seagulls, stayed up all night watching a storm try to beat us up, and no macroalgaes. I want to go back next weekend. ;)

I know that it is difficult to give up the quest to regain emotional equality when you are one down emotionally. Especially if you need the acceptance of others.     I stand by my #130 post. I did not take that post as anti semitic, the way you did. I am not Jewish. Rather I am a Secular Humanist. I have no interest or investment in a belief in god. I applaud your sincerety as well. Most folks don’t even know how to make a real apology, much less try. Saying you are sorry is a very difficult thing to do even if you know how. A few years ago I attended a two day experiential therapy group on learning how to apologize, believe it or not. It was a tough two days! There is a lot more to apologizing than we are aware of.

    The only Old Testament reference to homosexuality as a sin is the aforementioned reference to shellfish, marriage being required between all men and women, etc. It was abomination at the time, because the community in which those rules were written was hit by Red Tide or a similar ocean malady. They banned the eating of shellfish to prevent the deaths. They force everyone to marry man to woman and breed to maintain the population. They specify in the rules that a homosexual affair counts as adultery. They were merely qualifying male on male sexual encounters as “counting” towards the (extremely strict) anti-adultery laws.

    The only homosexual references in the New Testament are in the Pauline Epistles. This is because PAUL was a homophobic misogynist. Paul had as much an anti-homosexual agenda as he had an anti-woman agenda. I take everything Paul said with a grain of salt. The man loathed so much for a follower of Yeshua. If the epistles were even written by Paul, what with that still under debate and all.

    On the other hand, men married men for financial purposes in the Bible. Rabbis allowed women who wished it to HAVE ABORTIONS, by giving them moon tea, which would kill the baby, and the body would be flushed with the next menstrual cycle.

    You hate so much, because some men with hatred in their hearts twisted the meaning of the lessons of ancient texts. You believe that words written by men and compiled by men, redacting by men to exclude all texts that did not conform to the foundation of an organized church with which to control the masses, as opposed to allowing them a personal relationship with their deity, as the gnostics taught. As Yeshua himself taught.

    The Muslims revere Yeshua as being one of the most important prophets Allah (the same damned God of Abraham that Christians and Jews alike worship as well, no less!). They believe he is the Messiah, but the Muslims do not believe the Messiah has divine qualities, nor do they believe there is only one Messiah, ever. The Jews believe that the Messiah is divine, but has not appeared on Earth yet. You Christians believe that the Messiah is divine, and has indeed appeared on Earth in the form of Yeshua, or Jesus, the Christian Christ figure. Yet, so many of these sectarian folks, who all worship the same deity, project hatred upon one another. Upon anyone and anything that is DIFFERENT from what they were raised with.

    Basically, you ignore the very teachings that Yeshua spread to the world. You do not turn the other cheek. You do not show humility, act pious, or spread the message of PEACE to the rest of the world. You bang the drums of war, and work tirelessly to undermine all the good the MAN Yeshua brought to the world.

    Yeshua wanted us all to know that the only way beyond this mess we call civilization is to spread peace, and love. The only way is to shun and cast out the warmongers, the deceivers, the selfish worshipers of the material.

    The mighty Republican worship of Capitalism, as their definition of it stands, with the “free market”, the corporate personhood, the inclusion of money in all aspects of life, INCLUDING RELIGION, would, if we are to believe his teachings and the tales of his life, make Yeshua the man sick to his stomach.     Interesting qualification for one who criticizes believers. By knowing that there is no God – what it means to be an atheist – you can tell when someone isn’t a follower of Christ?

    Must be a special skill that only atheist believe they possess!

    Since you’ve read so much of scripture you probably know that Christ himself comments on the Creator’s intent as to how humans are to express their sexuality. Christ does this in Matthew 19 when he answers a question about divorce. Christ remarks that the Creator intended there to be one man one woman and that that relationship would be a marriage. This was the Creator’s intent from the beginning according to Christ.

    I wouldn’t be so quick to condemn the Apostle Paul. Most of what we know about God’s grace – what a Christian accepts when he becomes a believer – comes from the Apostle Paul. In addition, some of the most beautiful writings in the world come under the name of the Apostle Paul. These writings would include I Corinthians 13 and Ephesians 3.

    Many couples like to have I Corinthians 13 read at their weddings, and many Christians are hugely enamored with Ephesians 3. I would be one of them.

    However, you are correct in writing that the Apostle Paul has harsh words for those who behave in a way that leads to a depraved mind. A portion of Romans 1 is quoted below. I certainly don’t want this to be true of the way I think.

    1) Dumbledore did not, to my knowledge, engage in any sexual behavior of any kind in any of the Harry Potter books or movies. For that matter, the Harry Potter series has been remarkably free from sexual activity in general (as is customary in books intended for an audience of minors).

    2) Fundamentalist Christians have already dissed the Harry Potter books as Satanic. Therefore, any further revelations about any of the characters should make no difference to them.

    3) I can’t imagine how Dumbledore’s sexual orientation would “damage” any child. Unless, of course, that child has already been warped by being fed a great deal of bigoted hooey about how “evil” the gay segment of our population is.

    I suspect that the only reason the fundies care about this is they need a new outrage every so often to feed their phony self-righteousness. If only they would get at least as outraged about war, greed, selfishness, lying for political purposes, etc.

    That is something YOU believe, so does that mean you can’t see “the truth”? I am both a Christian and a progressive who values separation of church and state politically and personally. There are many of us in this category but we have not been vocal because of our live and let live attitude. I do think it is time for that to change. If non-believing progressives do not accept us into the fold, there is less power to create the socio-political change we jointly seek. While I do think dr7854 overplayed his point, I also see how progressives can be hostile and bigoted against those of faith. Just because we have faith that stems from Biblical teachings does not mean that we accept everything in the Bible as scientific or historical truth. What many of us accept in the Bible is the spiritual truth that God lovingly created us and wants us to love him and each other. It is NOT loving to be judgmental like Daryll and it is NOT loving to stereotype people in our view. It does not require us to use secular laws or power to force others to believe. On topic, in my view the Harry Potter books contain as much spiritual truth as the allegorical stories of the Bible.

Some verses are more important than others, and when you can rile up your “base” by fabricating fake news (ie – gay marriage affects straight marriage, war on Christmas) ten the parts of the Bible that don’t support your prejudices can just be overlooked as unimportant.

Holism, where the “whole” has a greater value (reality) then the sum of its comprising parts.

    Come on people get real, God is in the process and not sitting on high orchestrating and adjudicating every aspect of life.     Perhaps if Think Progress spent more time communicating and debating the other side and less time trying to destroy their character, the dialogue between us would much more constructive.

    The inability to separate real from fantasy may indeed be the reason people like him truly believe in themselves as an intercessor to God — when the very Bible they thump says that it NOT THEIR JOB — it’s Jesus Christ’s!

    Knowing full well that I’ll probably get dumped on here in the comments for saying so, there is a purpose for beliefs, spirituality, and even Christianity… but when an organized religion grows so top-heavy that it forgets that we are all pond-scum on the pyramid of power (for the unchurched, that’s: God / Angels / Humans / Animals & Plants / non-living things) compared to Christ, who is often referred to as ‘our elder brother’ in a figurative sense, but is on the God-plane, already being part of the family which is referred to as God, and led by the one called God the Father.

    Now, having said all of that; I highly doubt that anyone above the human plane has any trouble discerning the the clear line between reality and fantasy — so I hardly think they’re even slightly put out by the whole thing. Perhaps only a little annoyed and saddened that humanity doesn’t read (or follow) the instructions; but hey, that’s been true ever since Adam and Eve.
