Today, Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, testified before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee on the “Human Impacts of Global Warming.” Gerberding told the committee that global warming “is anticipated to have a broad range of impacts on the health of Americans,” but gave few specifics, instead focusing on CDC’s current preparation plans. From her statement:
An effective public health response to climate change can prevent injuries, illnesses, and death and enhance overall public health preparedness. Protecting Americans from adverse health effects of climate change directly correlates to CDC’s four overarching Health Protection Goals of Healthy People in Every Stage of Life, Healthy People in Healthy Places, People Prepared for Emerging Health Threats, and Healthy People in a Healthy World.
While we still need more focus and emphasis on public health preparedness for climate change, many of our existing programs and scientific expertise provide a solid foundation to move forward.
CDC officials are now revealing that the White House heavily edited Gerberding’s testimony, which originally was longer and had more “information on health risks“:
“It was eviscerated,” said a CDC official, familiar with both versions, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the review process.
The official said that while it is customary for testimony to be changed in a White House review, these changes were particularly “heavy-handed,” with the document cut from its original 14 pages to four. It was six pages as presented to the Senate committee.
The White House’s deletions included “details on how many people might be adversely affected because of increased warming and the scientific basis for some of the CDC’s analysis on what kinds of diseases might be spread in a warmer climate and rising sea levels.”
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) today put out a statement, stating, “The Administration should immediately release Dr. Gerberding’s full, uncut statement, because the public has a right to know all the facts about the serious threats posed by global warming.”
The Bush administration has not only repeatedly attempted to suppress global warming facts, but has also muzzled its officials from speaking out. A January report found 435 instances in which the Bush administration interfered into the global warming work of government scientists over the past five years. The administration also attempted to censor the government’s top global warming scientist, James Hansen, who has been outspoken about the dangers of climate change.
They’re not happy with the death rate of Americans in Iraq, they would like to kill more of us here at home as well. Worse than nazis.

October 23rd, 2007 at 9:28 pmThis is a good example of why reform is needed. The Center for Inquiry (publishers of the Skeptical Inquirer) has published a paper calling for reform of the Data Quality Act, to re-establish the Office of Technology Assessment, and to ensure that government employees have greater freedom to communicate their findings and opinions.
It is highly unfortunate that such legislation would be necessary, but clearly it is.

October 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 pmHave seen hours of CNN wildfire coverage. They do not mention global warming as a cause. “60 Minutes” Sunday said:

3)An increase of one degree will cause four times as many fires.
4)We can lose one half of all forests in the western US over the next 30-100 years due to global warming.
Don’t ask the White House for Gerberding’s statement. Get it directly from Gerberding herself.

But the dems are feckless and can’t, or won’t, get their collective act together. The only way to fight right wing obstinacy is with equal and opposite obstinacy – the dems don’t seem to understand why they keep on being bipartisan, yet they keep getting screwed. Maybe they just like getting screwed. The perfect, dysfunctional, S&M relationship.
The bottom line is that with faux authoritian dumbasses like the Republicans and Bushco, you have to b!tchslap them. The shock value alone will tilt the status quo to the dems advantage.
It’ll never happen.

Comment by muckdog — October 24, 2007 @ 1:15 am
See, what did I tell you. “Mickey” is gone and here comes muckdog.
I’ll take a crack. Contrary to what the modern Republicans do, rational people believe that if there’s a sound need for an expenditure it must be paid for and not left for future generations to pay like, for instance, the bill for the illegal Iraq war.
October 24th, 2007 at 1:27 amI don’t know who is proposing the measure that you’re referring to but it’s a reasonable way to finance the fight against “human caused” global warming provided we are told how the money is going to be spent.
Any intellectually honest person who sincerely wants to find out about global climate change, can easily go to the IPCC website, or to NASA’s website, or the US EPA’s website. All these have accurate, up-to-date information on global climate change and its effects on life on Earth.
All the information is available there. If anybody feels like challenging it, they better get started with their homework. They are wasting their time on this blog, babbling on, and on, and on about Gore, “librul” science, and other asinine non-points…
October 24th, 2007 at 1:42 amI am almost certain that Al Gore in the film said IF half of the ice on Greenland and half of the ice on Antarctica melted, then that would raise sea levels by 21 feet.
But he did not say it could be said with certainty that would happen or when it would happen. There are so many variables, it is not that exact a science. He was just giving an example. But what he said was certainly true and should be taken as a warning of a possibility.
Is that good enough for you, Michael? Go to IPCC’s website and read them. They are the thousands of experts on climate change. They can certainly explain it better than me.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:04 amMuckdog,
In 1992, I was living in North Carolina and buying gas for 95 cents per gallon. Candidate Clinton proposed a 5 cent per gallon tax. Every Republican in the country squealed “If Clinton gets elected gas will be two dollars a gallon!”. Eight years later, gas was still 95 cents per gallon.
What were the 6.75 years under Bush like? Exxon alone now makes $40 billion profit every year. Now that a barrel has gone from $20 under Clinton to $89 under Bush, the reserves of the top five western oil corps are worth $2.2 Trillion. Iraq’s oil reserves now worth about $20 Trillion. Pure coincidence that everyone in the Bush administration are from the OIL industry?
October 24th, 2007 at 2:14 am“The official said that while it is customary for testimony to be changed in a White House review…”
So what was said in testimony becomes….something completely different than was said in testimony (or at least cut down to a shadow of its former self).

(Life must be tough for a mindless global warming denier, with reality having a liberal bias and all….)
October 24th, 2007 at 2:38 amBill McKibben, author of “Deep Economy”, was on Democracy Now Tuesday. He said increase of one degree means four times number of fires. Global warming also brings new insects into forests to destroy them. Add in the carbon from the fires going into the atmosphere and the lack of trees to clean the air of the CO2. He predicts a five degree increase by end of century.
for another story on warming causing extinctions: http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1501AP_Mass_Extinctions.html
“In April, the same climate panel of thousands of scientists (IPCC) warned that “20 to 30 percent of animal species assessed so far are likely to be at increased risk of extinction” if temperatures increase by about 3 to 4 degrees Fahrenheit.”

The old, “if ain’t going to effect me who cares”. And, “all liberals are idiots”.
The fact of the matter is that the whatever inches the IPCC are predicting by centuries end is probably way under what the next IPCC report will say because the previous report didn’t include Greenland and the arctic which is melting way faster than any model had predicted.

Oh, wait. You were most probably in Special Ed based on your purile and childish responses. My pardon. We should be sensitive to your mental handicaps, and not deride you for your lack of logic and other personal failings.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:26 amGlobal warming may be real. Human desire for prosperity is also real. One shouldn’t have to sacrifice one’s desire for prosperity and intelligence because the globe is warming. One should use one’s intelligence to mitigate any negative effects as they come up.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:44 amThe costs to intelligence of rolling back the factors inducing global warming will be much higher than the costs of mitigating it. In all probability, we will just discover a couple of panaceas and be done with these perceived negative effects.
If, on the other hand, you are so passionate about doing something about global warming, maybe you ought to integrate that into all your decisions in life. Do you really do that? Have you really chosen to live close to work, even though it costs more just because you want to not pollute the environment with your commute? If you haven’t, then that is just a blatant example of how you have somehow convinced yourself of “global warming”, but are perfectly fine not doing anything about it!
October 24th, 2007 at 8:48 amSo, how then are you “better” than that Micheal dude here? Just because he doesn’t believe in global warming and you do makes you better? Well, in the end he doesn’t do anything about it, and neither do most of you. So what’s the difference? Knowledge without action is just hallucination. And action without knowledge is stupidity.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:51 amI’ve pointed out before that Michael’s screen name links back to Ann Coulter’s website. So he/she is either Ann OR that’s where he/she gets his screed from.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:53 amI finally watched an Inconvenient Truth, which provides the hysterionics required by libs to push ill developed policies.
I also saw a good Nova episode that showed smart policies / approaches for clean energy. Specifically, Germany created a marketplace for clean energy through subsidies and long-term contracts that drew capital towards those who would set up solar panel farms – that is how to do it! Germans pay much more for their electricity, but it also created high paying jobs in the solar panel manufacturing industry.
Currently, GM is creating the Chevy Volt for 2010, which is a plug-in electric vehicle with an on-board gasoline genarator to extend the vehicle’s range. This type of hybrid will be the eventual solution for most consumers, with a 150 mpg rating. Tesla Motors is introducing a 250 mile range plug-in roadster, whose technology they intend to license to the auto industry, to provide the performance / range requirements for a significant segment of the market.
There are smart ways to approach our energy / transportation needs, but libs can’t get out of the “just use one sheet of toilet paper” mindset to get us there.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:58 am#79 – “So, how then are you “better†than that Micheal dude here? Just because he doesn’t believe in global warming and you do makes you better?”

And, I meant “well received”, not “well researched”. Well researched may as well be garbage, if not well received and understood and appreciated.

I have the “temerity” because you didn’t present anything to back up what you said. Nothing.
So, now, you have the temerity to lecture people about being open to scientific rationale and logic? The irony is remarkable!
One thing is open-mindedness and another is playing your little game of “I challenge you to prove me wrong”. If you have anything in the way of evidence to back up what you said, present it. Otherwise, I will repeat myself: Anyone can spout nonsense, as you have proven. Once again.

Well, at least that sounds ressonable. There’s still some hope for you.

Hits, do you understand that by stating the above you a making yourself sound, scientifically speaking, like an ignorant fool. How can anything that is well researched be garbage? But, of course, when you say “well received” you are implying that people like you will only appreciate to hear what YOU want to hear even if it is GARBAGE.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:25 pmAnd the argument “when the ill effects of global warming begin to happen, we will deal with it” is false because—–it IS happening and this administration is doing nothing except going after other countries’ OIL.
New Orleans was lost. California is burning NOW. Atlanta may have no more water in 80 days.

October 25th, 2007 at 12:23 pmproudly proclaim that I am a liberal. Some of us should go to Wikipedia
and read what a liberial actually IS. Then read what a conservative is.
Of course, there will be “bleeding heart” liberials and “right wing” con-
servatives and several shades in-between. After we have all done our
research, perhaps a re-reading of the constitution would be in order,
since that is the document upon which our country’s ideals are based.
As a liberal, I trust that document to guide our great country, especially
in times of peril. Like now, for example. Consider for a moment the
possibility of a new HUAC. Who would be most likely to be brought be-
for that committee for “un-american” acts? Who would be the most
likely charged with treason? Just asking….
