These conservative bigots can be countered by pointing out that religious fascism of any kind is indeed a problem for civilized societies here and around the world — but here at home, an even more substantial threat to American values is Christian fascism, which is found in the likes of the Ku Kluz Klan, (still very active in the southeast, especially) the Michegan Militia and other militia organizations, the Minutemen, Timothy McVeigh and the bombing of the Oklahoma federal building (which was the first terrorist attack specifically targeting the U.S. government in U.S. history).

The KKK has been a Christian terrorist organization, murdering and terrorizing American citizens for well over a century. Our government has done very little to erradicate this and other criminal, terrorist pro-fascist organizations, and indeed, the FBI has a long and storied history of very cozy and cordial relations with the KKK, as Greensboro, N.C. well knows. (Check the News & Record for its multimedia report on on the “The Klansman and the G-man” in which two retired members of both organizations discuss their friendly professional relationship over the years. In many respects, our government has harbored the KKK, much as the Taliban harbored Al Queda in Afganistan.

So lets agree that religious fascism is real and needs to be addressed, but that the way to battle Christian and Islamo fascism is to use law enforcement in the one case, and international intellegence and law enforcement in the other, which requires cooperation in a civilized manner. Not the military.

There is ample evidence that Fox News is actually detrimental to our society and is contributing to the downfall of freedom and liberty in the United States. I was never interested in politics until I started reading the alternative news and my father’s blog – and now that I see the truth, I too am concerned about the future of our country, and whether we will be able to survive the Presidency of George Bush.

He isn’t sure of the answer, and neither am I, but how can passing off propaganda and lies be legally called news when there is ample evidence of their constant right-wing leanings and issues they have misrepresented and caught red-handed by Media Matters. We have to do something to bring back accountability to the news media, otherwise a huge portion of the country will never be told of the danger they are in – and without knowing that our country is on the brink of total dictatorship, they will never rise-up in anger and demand change. How can our Congress tolerate this? Why won’t they intervene and help their constituents?

If millions of people are unaware of the danger we face, the news media only skirts the issue, and Congress refuses to do anything of substance – exactly how are we to have any chance of saving our Democracy?

Rupert Murdoch’s other news channels in the UK (Sky News) and its affiliates in Australia and India are pretty much doing what Fox does here although the dynamics outside the US are a bit different.

The guy is a menace. From a journalist’s perspective, this type of media is everything that journalism is NOT.

Perhaps most importantly, a petition forces students and faculty to declare their allegiances: either to fighting our terrorist adversaries or failing to take action to stop our enemies. For this reason, we encourage you to make a special effort to bring this petition to those groups who might be least likely to sign it, for example to campus administrators, student government officers, and the Muslim Students’ Association.

If they don’t have one, they will fabricate one. Heathens and atheists in one case, Muslims in the other.

Both the “awareness week” and the “war on Christmas” capitalise on fear, prejudice, ignorance of the general public. The very trading stock of the authoritarian types.

And it lists a “University of Southern Indiana – South Bend”, which I don’t think even exists. (South Bend is about 10 miles from the Michigan border. if it were any further north, it wouldn’t be in Indiana anymore.)

Leads me to think that, yes, the number of schools participating just might be a little inflated.

fascism: n. a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

I realize they need some neat little word that will automatically frighten people, but it’d be nice if they used a word that actually meant the right thing.

As it stands, that definition is much, much, MUCH more fitting to the current U.S. government than an unorganized group of a few thousand radicals scattered throughout the world.
