Hill Democrats were planning to hold a press conference today featuring three college students whose parents came to the United States illegally in order to promote the DREAM Act. But the event was postponed after anti-immigrant Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO) called on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to arrest the three students:
“I call on the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency to detain any illegal aliens at this press conference,” said Tancredo, who claims to have alerted federal authorities about the well publicized press confrence. “Just because these illegal aliens are being used for political gain doesn’t mean they get immunity from the law. If we can’t enforce our laws inside the building where American laws are made, where can we enforce them?”
One of the students, Tan Tram, was recently in the spotlight when immigration officials raided her family’s home after she spoke out about U.S. immigration policies.
classy…
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:19 pmI expect no less from this bucket of slime. No don’t engage… attack.
What a moron.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:19 pmAnybody born here, even to illegal immigrants, is a citizen per the Constitution.
Our elected officials should have to know the Constitution by heart. It would be a practical barrier of entry to holding public office.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:24 pmI wonder if Tancredo was behind the raid of Tam’s home.
Oh, and Daryll, read the article again. We are talking about kids who have been here their whole lives. And they EARNED their way to this program. Read up on it before you make any more stupid comments.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:24 pmLet the Tancredo who is without sin file the first arrest warrant.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:26 pmThere’s a direct line in our culture from “Bill the Butcher” to Tom Tancredo.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:27 pmI’m very much in favor of enforcing the law. I’m concerned that part of the problem with immigration law is that it frequently feels like INS is only able to detain and deport the least harmful of illegal immigrants who believe the most in the American Dream and the only way INS knows about them is because they’re doing something brazen and/or foolish to call attention to themselves.
Seriously, don’t let INS put the nice illegal immigrants on the news. It makes it easy to conflate illegal immigration with legal immigration and say that respecting immigration law is for bureaucrats and rednecks. Show us drug dealers and gangsters and thugs and bums who are here illegally getting busted and deported if you want people to respect the law as a good tool of order as opposed to a blind tool of paranoid bureaucrats.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:29 pmPrince William County (near Fairfax County) has passed a law
banning illegals from receiving government services. God is good!!
Comment by Daryll — October 23, 2007 @ 6:20 pm
Okay, this excerpt alone is enough to prove that Daryll is not for real.
No one is stupid enough to conflate denying services to immigrants with any vision of “God”.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:32 pm“’Just because these illegal aliens are being used for political gain doesn’t mean they get immunity from the law. If we can’t enforce our laws inside the building where American laws are made, where can we enforce them?’â€
Why isn’t this ass screaming about King George the Dumb and the immunity for the Telephone Companies? The concept is exactly the same. The objects of his tirade, however, are not of the same political persuasion. He does have a point, however, we must start enforcing the law from the top down. From KGtD to Tancredo would be a good start.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:32 pmI feel that the child and his/her parent must be removed from this country.

Comment by Daryll — October 23, 2007 @ 6:22 pm
I see. It’s all clear now. You believe in following laws you agree with and changing laws you don’t. That’s the way everyone else feels and they’re tired of your sanctimonious bull$hit.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:34 pm“banning illegals from receiving government services. God is good!!”
(I still haven’t pegged wether or not you are a mock-poster, but I’ll bite.)
Since you are celebrating the needy receiving less services as an act of God, I can see that you have, in fact, never read the New Testament.
What’s with people on the right not reading these days? (see #5)
I’m not saying that I agree with handing my tax dollars over to illegal immigrants, but I just felt the need to point out your hypocrisy of bringing God into it.
By the way, what services, exactly, are illegal immigrants trying to obtain?
Oh, and I feel it important to mention that I have lived in Fairfax and, although Prince William County is geographically close, its known for being a bit “backwoods” and where the rednecks live who most likely only passed this law because they are racists, but please, do continue to praise your “God” of hate. You have every right, but He’s certainly not the one I am familiar with.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:35 pmDaryll, 6:22 pm: I guess you don’t believe in following laws.

Um, Daryll at 6:22? Don’t be too hard on Daryll at 6:28. You know, like Jesus said, “they know not what they do”?
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:36 pmPoor Daryll. Worshipping a Savior who, according to his own words, would be profoundly critical of the practices of Daryll’s own worshipping cult must be a tough burden to carry.

October 23rd, 2007 at 6:44 pmSo you consider a hotel janitor a legitimate professional? I think not. By far, illegal immigrants are not successful people. We continue to waste tax dollars on illegal immigrants. This must stop.

Excellent! More reason to completely destroy and bury Daryll’s party! We will then pass the laws that Americans believe in, not antiAmerican scumbags like daryll, who should be exiled forever for his despicable hate!

October 23rd, 2007 at 6:47 pmoh dear, shouting.
No, Daryll. Because I read the article and know that they have permission to be here. And I do not believe in punishing children for the misdeeds of their parents, if you want to go that route.
Try this one, honey buns:
“When strangers sojourn with you in your land, you shall not do them wrong. The strangers who sojourn with you shall be to you as the natives among you, and you shall love them as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” [Leviticus 19:33-34]
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:47 pmOn what basis do you claim to think that a hotel janitor is not a legitimate professional, daryll? Now you’ve proven your godless hypocrisy, adn we know everything you say is a lie in the face of god.

Now if his grandparents were kicked out of the US well he wouldn’t be in the USA. Oh how we forget our own past. Next Tancedo will be attacking African Americans unlike his grandparents who care here willingly they were kidnapped and sold while being brought to America. Denver needs educated representation not a loony.

Yikes, Daryll. If you’re going to expect anyone to take you the least bit seriously, you ought to study up on your spelling: That would be abetting, dearheart.

October 23rd, 2007 at 7:05 pmIncredible hypocrisy on your part, Bigpoot, to have anything to say on the issue of immigration, legal or otherwise, after the gloating and boasting of your familie’s history in the Rio Grande valley.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:10 pmThe enslavement, exploitation, genocide and sheer brutality practiced by those 15th century invaders was one of the greatest atrocities on this continent.
Vaya a infierno.
Matthew 25:
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: 36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. 37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? 38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? 39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee? 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Jesus Christ said that a criterion for getting into heaven is taking in strangers.
Over against that Divine Law, you have the quotas of the immigration and Naturalization Service. These non-elected officials determine who gets in to the United States.
These are not laws, these are bureaucratic judgments. The immigrant must not submit to an eternal principle, or even a democratic code: the immigrant must submit to the all-powerful bureaucrat, who says you may come and be an American; you may not.
One of those judgments is that no Mexican unskilled labor may even TRY to become an American. Before 1925–the era of the Red Scares, of Douglas Macarthur on horseback attacking World War I veterans on the grounds of the nation’s Capital–before 1925 all you needed to become an American was hope and determination.
Not any more, though. Now some person behind a desk will tell you no, you don’t have enough education or no, you are not already successful enough or no, we don’t need farmers or machinists or poets or dreamers.
And this person says you’re not good enough to come to the Gold Mountain where all are free. We will tell you over and over how wonderful america is, we will beat our chests and talk about liberty and prosperity and alabaster cities gleaming and just when your eyes begin to fill with tears and the dreeam begins to fill your heart we will SLAP your stupid face and say you’re not good enough to come here.
The plucky kid who, not getting the job, keeps coming back to convince the boss how good he is. The kid who doesn’t make the football team, but who shows up anyway to show them how much heart he’s got. The people who won’t take no for an answer, who believe that where there’s a will there’s a way–
Criminals. All of them.
What do you do, when you think that bureaucrat is simply wrong, when you vow to work twice as hard as everyone else, to endure the most terrible conditions without complaint, to take the bigotry of citizens and smile and nod, even if your pride takes you apart–you’ll do all this, if only you can live and raise your children in liberty?
Do you break the law that says a bureaucrat can say you’re not fit to be an American? What would a real American do? What would a man or a woman possessed of the spirit that brought America as far as it has come–what would they do? Sit back and take it? Or take the leap and prove themselves?
Would I dare to take the chance of being called a criminal?
I’d like to think I would. Butt I don’t know if I’m as brave as these people.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:18 pmSend me some of those aspen leaves, Billy, willya?

Daryll, your use of God to hide your hatred of people who are undergoing very difficult circumstances is, to say the least, despicable!
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:35 pmWe must all obey the law but denying, for instance, a sick person’s access to a hospital because that person happens to be an illegal immigrant is not CHRISTIAN nor could that type of attitude be identified with any of the major religions or with people who don’t believe in any religion and who, nevertheless, qualify as better Christians than you have shown to be.
The child of an illegal immigrant needs to go to school just like any other child and, if at the end, that child stays in the US and hasn’t gone to school, you have created someone who will probably have to be housed and fed in PRISON.
So quit using the name of the Lord in vain you hypocritical pharisee, you’re doing all believers a great disservice!
I call your bluff Tancredo, lets export all immigrants and watch what happens.

October 23rd, 2007 at 8:01 pmAre ya still with us, Sierra boy?
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:15 pmWhen you get through with the illegals, you can inform yourself about the shipbuilding industry in the Gulf Coast, who import workers from the Near East, promising them a fair wage and housing.
Upon their arrival, they find their housing consists of cracker boxes, 8 to 10 men per unit, and they are charged as much as $1,200.00 a month rent.
Those are the lucky ones.
The unucky ones are packed in 20 men per converted
shipping container, and they are charged rent as well.
And, oh, the employer takes their passports and work visas from them when they arrive at immigration.
If they try to leave, they become illegal immigrants without their paperwork.
This form of indentured servitude is actually quasi-legal, and a large part of the neo-con legislative immigration package.
You are a LOSER Tancredo.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:25 pmIllegal Immigrants, Our Low-Income Taxpayers Bernard Wasow, The Century Foundation, 5/26/2006
“One of the flash points of today’s hostility toward immigrants is the notion that illegal immigrants are free-riders on the tax dollars of honest Americans. Ironically, if eventually the 11 million illegal resident of this country are required to correct past tax-paying errors, it is likely that the undocumented workers will end up receiving rather than paying the Treasury money”.

Oh but it is our problem because our corporate masters want all that cheap labor to advance their profit line. They could care less that by hiring undocumented workers at very low salaries, they are driving down the salaries of Americans. But, then if they cared about Americans they also wouldn’t be sending our jobs over seas or bringing people here from India to do our white color jobs for half the pay.
I am looking forward to when we are no longer the United Corporations of America and get back to the good ole USA.

October 24th, 2007 at 12:23 amDream Act???
Why the special treatment?
Some of us once had dreams of our own.
Back in the 60’s the Federal Government came into the public schools and brainwashed us as little children with the message that the children we were about to have were unwanted because the population was rising so fast. They launched a program called, “Zero Population Growthâ€. They pushed Family Planning and birth control pills. Now they call the same programs, “Safe Sex” but the results are the same. I think you and I both know that you only have to trick people for their few child bearing years and there is no going back.
Many of us never had a say in the future of our unborn.
I am the result of two living cells. One from each of my parents. They are the result of two living cells, one from each of their parents. I wasn’t just born. I am a continuation of life. I am a living thing that reaches back into time perhaps 400 million years and the result of billions of joining of pairs of cells. It is possible that if you were to follow my cells back to my parent’s cells and beyond that my family tree touches every living thing here on earth. That is if we limit ourselves to believing life was created here on earth. If it rained down from the immensity of the universe it could reach back into that immensity of time and space, and who knows what relationships and who knows what species.
My family line succeeded, at least until I came up against the Federal Government and their plan to control the population.
I have seen the Federal Government do little else to control the population.
The open border, United States laws only apply to some, is a serious slap in the face. No, not a slap in the face, it reaches well beyond that. Maybe back to the beginning of time and stretch to the bounds of the universe.

Of course they are.
“All of the showcased students have encountered legal troubles. Tran, a UCLA graduate, has not been given long-term permission to stay in the country; Gonzalez’s parents have been deported; and Bartsch, an Ohio college student, was arrested in 2005 by federal immigration authorities but has been granted a temporary permission to remain in the country.”

All three of them have faced legal hurdles and potential deportation, but have been… GIVEN TEMPORARY EXTENTIONS… that allow them to stay in the country.
If they have extensions, albeit temporary, to stay in the country, how can they be inviolation of the law?
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who also backs the legislation, asserted that “the Dream act is not amnesty.”
Damn that Orrin Hatch… so soft on crime!!! (Must be a librul…)
“They’ve [the students] worked hard in schools but unfortunately they’re undocumented,” Hatch said. “So their options are limited. They could be deported any time.”
They left the press conference without being arrested, despite Tancredo’s wishes.
Damn, Tony… NO GO!!

I’m sorry but, I just don’t see the relationship between your decision not to have children and illegal immigration.
Also, where did you get the idea that the US has an open border immigration policy? Haven’t you heard of the 700 mile long wall that has been proposed for the Mexican border? People risk their lives crossing that border illegally and are then exploited by businesses in the US while at the same time reducing the value of the work of those already here.
Don’t think for a moment that I’m in favor of illegal immigration; I’m just saying that in order to stop it, you must go to the root causes.
of what makes an illegal immigrant.

I have seen NO “liberal, open borders, anti-military, terrorist-coddling socialists” who participate in the discussions here.
Who EXACTLY does BigOFoot-in-mouth have in mind? Naturally, he will NEVER give us NAMES from this thread!
Should he FINALLY do so, we would find that this is just another one of his dirty, hate-filled LIES intended to distract from the topic of the thread, to call attention to himself, and to slime and dinigrate those who disagree with him.
He makes these ad hominem attacks without naming names, so he can’t ONCE AGAIN be shown up for the juvenille TROLL he really IS!
He even makes Tancredo, whose VILE activities he has tried to distract us from discussing, look like an honest, decent, God-fearing human being.
Now THAT is REALLY an AMAZING FEAT!
October 24th, 2007 at 4:01 amLast time I checked we couldn’t even enforce our own laws on the very office of the president, inside the effin White House! Tancredo, news-flash for ya, every American who’s anti-(im)migration is…..get ready for it…. hypocrite. (Im)Migration is what made this country. If there were no migration there wouldn’t even be an America. People like Tancredo, i.e. Bush-like idiots, could be of immense use to our society if we just let them hunt with Cheney, used their bodyparts for prostheses and threw away the already-dead brains.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:04 amIf the folks are illegal, they should be deported. End of story. If not, the only way things should work is if the Congress amends the laws and introduces an exception to have illegals be legal when part of a Democrat rally!
If we start making exceptions to the word “illegal”, what’s stopping us to make condoning murder or rape?
October 24th, 2007 at 8:56 amFrankly, I dont understand why Dems have taken up this issue and I am offended. First of all I AM NOT RACIST. In fact, from what I have seen, these illegal immigrants work harder than Americans and I respect them greatly for their work ethic. HOWEVER, they do drive wages down and take jobs away from Americans – its the same old the rich get richer, the poor get poorer. My college job of installing windows was taken away from me and given to illegal immigrants. My IT jobs have steadily decreased in both opportunity and salary throughout the last 10 years (not exactly illegal immigration, but related).
I thought the Dems were supposed to be for the working class???? If we want to have a debate on changing the numbers of immigrants we allow in the country every year, thats fine. Until then, these people have broken the law and more importantly, corporations have broken the law. Aggressively pusue the businesses, small and large, that employ illegals, fix our broken borders that are a security risk, finally, re-evaluate our immigration numbers.

October 24th, 2007 at 12:34 pmI’m sorry, but giving “breaks” and allowing people who broke the law by the manner in which they migrated to remain is a complete slap in the faces of millions who came here legally, waited in line, didn’t cause trouble, and struggled to be accepted.
Nowhere does it say that there is a right to be here. There is no right afforded those who are not citizens, and for good reason. Before the racist Socialist Democrat party starts giving people who have no legal standing here benefits, they should consider worrying about those who played the game by the rules.
Many in my family, including my own mother, applied to come here, sacrificed and saved to be able to pay the fees, waited in line, learned the language, and demonstrated inarguably that they wanted to be citizens here. My mother worked at a sweatshop for very little money and NO GOVERNMENT HAND-OUTS while raising four children as a single mother. All of us were citizens, but we were taught at a very young age that we had to earn the rewards that came with that citizenship.
Now, the racists on the left who only want cheap hotel and lawncare workers, have decided that all of that work, all of that sacrifice, means nothing, and even more than that– they want to take the money and services that have been designated for America’s children, that we have earned, and give it to people who have no interest in doing more than sucking on the government teat for as long as possible.
Those who whine about the “Righties’” and their desire to preserve what’s left of America should take all of your faux-compassion and put it to reasonable use– go to those other countries and work from within to make those countries places where their citizens want to stay. Maybe you will finally learn and appreciate the sacrifice that others already intimately know.

Actually, foreyes…,
I’m not saying there aren’t people on both sides abusing the system. What I am saying is that the racists (and yes, many do own large homes, hotels, etc.) of the Socialist Party (DNC) are doing so while trying to convince America that they are doing so with the best of intentions.
The capitalists who are exploiting cheap labor are only able to do this as long as they know that they can. Once we secure the borders, we can then look at workplace enforcement. Although the Unions have worked hard to kill that prospect, (and who do the unions support….? Oh yeah, that’s right–Socialist Democrat party) the simple fact is, we have to draw a line somewhere, and we should be looking, if we really want to help our people, for ways to help the citizens.
For the record, once all American citizens have received whatever social benefits America is willing to support, at a level that is befitting this country, I firmly support using any surplus to help foreign countries. US FIRST!
Or, if that’s too harsh, how’s about we just look to the “world community” to see what to do with foreign invaders? Since we all know that most of this debate is about Mexico, what do THEY do when someone sneaks into THEIR southern border? I’m pretty sure they don’t immediately set them up with services that all Mexicans don’t have access to.
I have a third option, but given the current status of the testicular fortitude of “the people”, it would be ridiculed outright: Why don’t we just annex Mexico to the United States outright, get rid of their corrupt government, and everybody wins. Sound ridiculous? So why is it less ridiculous to allow them to come over one family at a time? At least my way, there is enough land for everybody, instead of expecting these people to live four families deep in a two-bedroom shack.

October 24th, 2007 at 4:56 pm@foreyes
Okay, I read the articles. I have to admit that I feel bad for the individuals who live in a country where they feel that they cannot make a living. I really do. That being said, that doesn’t mean that it is right for me to force American citizens to do without the benefits of living here so that foreign nationals don’t have to.
If there isn’t enough money to farm back home, then unfortunately, they have to look at different ways to make money. Legally. Just as I understand that some people here are desperate for money, yet I don’t condone them robbing a bank or a liquor store to feed their family. There are better ways.
Obviously, I don’t really think annexing Mexico is a viable solution. In fact, I think it is JUST as viable as allowing 20 million foreign nationals to come in and drain THIS country of resources (which is what many on the left are advocating).
See, my problem is pretty simple. I go to Home Depot and there are a group of young men loitering in front, trying to get work. There are people IN THIS COUNTRY LEGALLY (citizens) who are trying to get those same jobs, but at a salary that will allow them to survive. They each have the same goal, so which one deserves to work? The one who might be a local, with established roots, who will pay taxes? Or the person who wants to be paid in cash to avoid taxes (even though they are receiving benefits from the taxes I pay), with no roots here (which means they might leave as soon as they get their money, regardless of whether the job has been done), who will send as much money as they can to a foreign country (where it will ultimately end up in the hands of that same corrupt government)?
I’m not talking about the degradation of society that many conservatives are concerned with, I’m not talking about the fact that our hospitals are being forced to close at a record pace because they are over-burdened with non-paying customers, I’m not even talking about the fact that because I AM hispanic, the natural assumption is that I speak spanish (even though I work in a professional setting where it is expected that english be spoken, for the protection of those who do business with me), and that because of this I am going to side “against Americans” (which I have been asked to do SEVERAL TIMES) in favor of them since we are “brothers”.
Let me crystal clear: I have no problem whatsoever with providing financial support to Mexican nationals or nationals from any other country in the world, AFTER and AS LONG AS all Americans are fully cared for FIRST. Personally, anything less is at best disingenuine, at worst seditious.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:38 pmWill, forgive me for saying this: you might have read the articles but you didn’t understand them. I know this because instead of recognizing that powerful business interests are profitting from the situation, you keep blaming the victims.
Did you understand how NAFTA, by subjecting Mexican farmers to unfair competition from SUBSIDIZED American agricultural products has produced a mass exodus of poor campesinos from the countryside? Obviously not!
Did you understand that these displaced people have NO OTHER ALTERNATIVE but to migrate to slums in Mexican cities or risk their lives crossing the desert and the border to the US or STARVE? Obviously not!
Did you understand that NAFTA has benefitted a minority of Mexicans (the Oligarchy tied to US business interests. By the way, this includes a fella by the name of Carlos Slim whose fortune is larger than Bill Gates’, yes you heard it right). Obviously not!
I could go on but it’s getting a bit tiresome. My final word is to suggest that you stay away from playing the same old scratched record (such as being expected to speak Spanish just because you are hispanic) and wake up to the fact that you need to update your information (there’s plenty more); your arguments, although true, are no longer relevant to the present situation.
