Beck Blames California Wildfires On The ‘Damn Environmentalists’

Last night, CNN Headline News host Glenn Beck blamed California’s massive wildfires on the “damn environmentalists” and their “bad environmental policies.” He also claimed that global warming has nothing to do with the situation, stating, “[I]f I hear global warming one more time, blood is going to shoot out of my eyes.”

To prove his points, he brought on R.J. Smith of the Exxon-funded Competitive Enterprise Institute and Chris Horner, author of the Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism. Horner — who is also a senior fellow at CEI — predictably argued that “[g]lobal warming is not a likely suspect” for the fires and Smith said that “the greens have made things worse by stopping all [fuels] management.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/10/beckceiwarmingfires.320.240.flv]

These claims have been echoed by the right-wing blogs. Michelle Malkin blamed “litigious environmentalists” for “standing in the way” of Bush’s Healthy Forests Initiative (HFI).

In 2002, Bush proposed HFI, which advocated “thinning” forests to decrease the risk of wildfires. But more than anything else, it was an attempt to curry favor with the timber and logging industries, which donated more than $1 million to Bush’s 2000 campaign. HFI allowed loggers to cut down large, valuable trees miles from at-risk communities, allegedly in order to finance the removal of the smaller brush that fuels wildfires.

Environmentalists don’t oppose removing brush and chapparal in at-risk areas, but logging in backforests has nothing to do with wildfire prevention. Removing brush is not a solution in itself. A 2006 study by Prof. A.L. Westerling, et al. concludes that addressing global warming needs to go hand-in-hand:

removebrushbush.gif [L]arge increases in wildfire driven by increased temperatures and earlier spring snowmelts in forests where land-use history had little impact on fire risks indicates that ecological restoration and fuels management alone will not be sufficient to reverse current wildfire trends.

Earlier this year, the Nobel Prize-winning IPCC wrote that “a warming climate encourages wildfires through a longer summer period that dries fuels, promoting easier ignition and faster spread.” Los Angeles went 150 days without measurable rainfall this past year, and such drought will likely get worse. A group of leading British climate scientists found that extreme drought will affect about a third of the planet and spread across half of the earth’s land surface by 2100 because of global warming.

The Center for American Progress’s Daniel J. Weiss has more about global warming’s effects on wildfires.

UPDATE: Michael Roston at Huffington Post points out that in June, government auditors warned the Bush administration about shortcomings in its firefighting plan.

UPDATE II: Joe Romm at Climate Progress and Adam Siegel at EnergySmart have more.

Digg It!

Transcript:

BECK: But first, for the second consecutive day, wildfires are sweeping through California, especially beach front cities like Malibu and San Diego. And I want to get one thing straight right from the start. Loss of life, property, tragic. The people who are fighting these fires, heroes.

But I got to tell you, the story just pisses me off. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Wildfire may be a natural disaster, but you’ve got to stop kidding yourself, America and pretending that man isn’t partly to blame for making things worse.

I remember spending my summers at my grandfather’s house at his farm. I can still see him screaming at that old Zenith TV that we had in the living room, yelling about how the mismanagement of our forests is going to get people killed one day.

You ask any farmer, anybody who’s lived closely with the land, and they’ll tell you, you can’t change Mother Nature. We’re the ones screwing things up. Why does this global warming phenomenon only seem to happen in our part of the globe? Why have we — why have we tried for decades to stop the natural cycle of burn and regrowth? And most importantly, why do we think that we can continue to believe that man knows best, when every bit of evidence tells us it ain’t true?

Mother Nature is tough enough. We don’t need to make matters worse with our bad environmental policies.

Chris Horner is the author of “Politically Incorrect Guide to Global Warming and Environmentalism.” And R.J. Smith is an adjunct environmental analyst with the competitive Enterprise Institute.

Let me — let me start with you, R.J. How much money do you get from big oil?

R.J. SMITH, ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE: I don`t think big oil has anything to do with — with the forest fires.

BECK: OK.

SMITH: And — and I’m not sure. I mean — environmentalists get big oil money themselves, too.

BECK: Look, here’s the thing. We’re going to talk about things that are politically incorrect. Nobody else on television is going to say this. And I know all the bloggers are right now going, “Oh, big oil, big oil, big oil. They’re going to deny global warming.”

I’m not denying global warming. But, Chris, let me ask you this. I keep hearing that this is global warming that’s doing this. And I keep thinking to myself, how many years have we let the underbrush grow, and nobody will do anything? If the super fires are caused by global warming, wouldn’t these super fires be happening all around the globe? Are they, or are they not?

CHRIS HORNER, AUTHOR, “POLITICALLY INCORRECT GUIDE TO GLOBAL WARMING”: Well, fire happens everywhere. And it is a natural disaster if man’s there. Otherwise it’s a disaster purely for nature, but again, it is natural.

Global warming is not a likely suspect for the following reason. The warming that the alarmists are talking about is one degree Fahrenheit over the past 150 years, most of which occurred before World War II. None of which are occurred in the last decade.

OK. We can reliably take global warming off the suspect list.

Second, it’s not clear that a warmer world would be a drier world. As you know, Glenn, they rely on computer models to scare us. The computer models disagree with each other.

The two that the United States used for an Al Gore-produced report as they left office said the Red River Valley was going to be a flood plain or a desert. So, you know, prepare for it.

BECK: OK. So, R.J., let me — help me out. Because if I hear the — if I hear global warming one more time, blood is going to shoot out of my eyes.

SMITH: It has little, if anything, to do with global warming, Glenn. What happens — I mean, you’re right from what you’ve learned in Washington state. [...]

BECK: R.J., true or false, that they actually — the environmentalists, the same ones that going to tell me it’s my fault because I have an SUV, these same damn environmentalists are the ones that have stopped people in California from clearing brush on their own property.

SMITH: Precisely. First, the feds made things bad with 100 years of mismanagement and then, starting around 1975, 1980, into there, the greens made things worse by stopping all management. No management.

And they said fire was natural and it was natural regulation and let it burn, particularly in the national parks. And you saw what happened in Yellowstone, the great experiment. It burned down half the park. That’s their big success story, and they love that. I mean, their chief biologist out there was chanting “Burn, baby, burn,” as the fire roared through his study plots.

One of the Audubon Society board members who teaches children for the Audubon Society said the biggest disaster of the Yellowstone fires was that they did not destroy the town of West Yellowstone, which is the entrance to the park, because it was all ticky-tacky and neon cluttered and it should have been reduced to ashes.

That’s the philosophy of the greens.

Now as for the bombing of Iran, the US will be attacked in retaliation only problem with that is Iran wont use Nukes. You just never know what they’ve been cooking in those plants. If Cheney hasn’t outed the covert CIA agent Plame we might know. Americans think Nukes are the weapon of choice because we’re that far behind. Look at how the enemy used our own planes don’t think they have other tricks that the dumb Presidents and Law Makers don’t know. The US Government and Leaders think like they did during the FDR days. Look at the committees of oldies. Age brings wisdom but youth keeps you up to date. Right now the US is working on the FDR plan and the Middle East uses the youth ideas.

    Global Warming causes Arson?

No, of course not. However, global warming can cause hotter, drier conditions that create an environment more apt to allow for any fire (intentionally set or not) to rage out of control.

C’mon, TC — I give you credit for knowing this.

  40. Candyce says:

Well, now I don’t know who to believe. Was it al Qaeda or not?

  41. Dave C says:

michael & tcdon showing their ignorance again, feigned or real, who cares. Warming causes hot temperatures. That dries out the friggin’ place. Unusual warm temps at this time of year lead to higher winds as the land cools quickly at night & warms in the daytime. Now you can say the fires were caused by arson or naturally (lightning). Global warming doesn’t cause arson, but it exacerbates fires by providing them with plenty of dry fuel & the winds blow them around spreading burning cinders and increasing the strength of the fires.

You both knew this, you’re not here for info, just to cause arguments.

I can’t figure out if you’re really this dumb, or just so stuck in your ideological rectum that you can’t think anything through.

Heat, high winds, and dry brush are the conditions which allow for rampant wild fires. When the conditions are as bad as they currently exist, any number of causes can set off devastating fires. Causes can be multiple, including blown-down power lines, industrial accidents, sparks from other fires and arson. (All of these have been suggested as the source of the current fires.)

What people are trying to explain to you is that conditions are likely to become increasingly bad as temperatures rise. If average temperatures rise, so too do the possibilities of fires, whether caused by arson or accident.

    From http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2007/10/wildfire.html:

Global warming’s effect on wildfires has already arrived. As Prof. A.L. Westerling et al. reported in Science last summer, their study of wildfire activity from 1970 to 1986, and 1987 to 2003, determined that “warming and earlier spring increase western U.S. forest wildfire activity.”

  71. Marcus Aurelius says:

All y’all arguing about global warming are missing the point: Somebody in government screwed up royally, again. Homes obviously shouldn’t be being built in these areas. The water table in California is probably also in trouble. Just like every other disaster that has taken place in the recent past in the US, there were knowledgeable, professional voices that gave warnings to do or not to do certain things based on fair and balanced scientific evidence. These voices were ignored and ridiculed by the government they served (a government that just happens to believe that god will come down and bail us out). Safety, public health, infrastructure, and public services have all been sacrificed to the “conservatives” who want only money, and they want it now.

T’wasn’t global warming what caused the great conflagration, t’was unwise government.

  72. raynman says:

Even tho I’m as Progressive as they come… I can’t say that Global Warming is the primary cause of these wildfires. Are they a factor? Certainly.

But I think Bush’s Healthy Forests Initiative, the lack of trained national guardsmen and their equipment (both being in Iraq) and the general lack of accountibility are also major factors.

As to what started the fires? Arson probably did start at least one of the fires but certainly not all of them.

But right now, its really not about what started the fires anymore… In the conditions that existed at the time the fires started, almost anything could have started the fires. I think the culpability part lies in allowing conditions to get to the point where almost anything could start the conflagurations and not having the materials and manpower available to fight them.

Judge Aiken sentenced Ms. Gerlach to nine years in prison for her role in “the family,” a group of at least 10 radical environmentalists who have been convicted of arson and other destructive actions at an electrical transmission tower; timber research centers; a Eugene police station; a ski resort in Vail, Colo.; and other sites in five Western states (including California) that they viewed as threats to the environment or their mission. The defendants are connected to the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front. The crimes occurred from 1996 to 2001, and the arrests were made in 2005 and early 2006. Leftist wackos.

Yes, of course, the most likely cause of brush fires in southern California is environmental arsonists. Or Al Qaeda Martians.

Eco-terrorists target facilities, idiot. They have not set random fires in the suburbs, attempting to destroy the very environment that they’ve been trying to protect with their “radical environmental agenda” and regulations. Makes perfect sense if you’re a total idiot.

How about this? Hybrid cars emit sparks when they switch from gas to electric (not really, but that’s part of the routine) and the sparks are what started the wildfires. If only hybrids were outlawed and we all drove Hummers, this wouldn’t have happened! Why do the environmentalists hate Rancho Santa Fe?

True, but it doesn’t hurt to be reminded every now and then. After all, since liberals are more comfortable with new information, we’d be likely to re-evaluate TDCon’s intelligence periodically. So far, it looks like consistency is the name of the game.

No. Droughts happened before we started messing with the climate. Nobody disputes that. But the scientific consensus is that the changes in climate we have caused will likely contribute to longer and more intense droughts in the future. Why is this such a difficult concept for you to grasp?

  105. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

How about some recent history. Here’s Bush selling his “Healthy Forest Initiative” in 2003 as a response to killer wildfires that were hitting the west.

“It’s important that we have good, sound forest policy. And the best way to do so is to listen to the experts, who understand that by thinning out our forests, we risk — we reduce the risk of catastrophic fire; that we can and we should have good, sound forest management policy all across the United States of America. (Applause.)

And that’s why I outlined what I called a Healthy Forest Initiative. The forest policies of the past operated to discourage efforts to thin forests. And, unfortunately, well meaning people proposed — put policy in place that made the health of the forests at risk, not better off.”

Democrats and environmentalists didn’t like the program because Bush refused to include regulations to force timber companies to spend some money and time on clearing firebreaks around residential areas bordering open spaces. The timber industry liked the legislation because it allowed them to get more timber out of protected areas deep within large forests. Bush’s policy has now been law for over 4 years.

Bush supporters: why has Bush’s policy been such a dismal failure even though it was proposed because of disasters such as this? Any thoughts?

Generally, papers won’t be published if they contain redundant opinions or evidence. So actually, the real surprise here is that there are more than a handful of papers that explicitly support the Climate Change position. Not only that, the journal in question deals with energy AND the environment, so we can assume that roughly half the papers, perhaps the 48% or so neutral papers cited in your article, have to do with energy and not the environment. With this, and the abundant amount of money being dumped into “disproving” climate change, I think your article provides reinforcement rather than rebuttal for the growing consensus among climate experts concerning climate change.

I should also mention that this is hardly a scientific study. I’m sure if we collected all the published papers by biologists who explicitly support the theory of evolution from 2003-2007, we could “prove” that there is no consensus on evolution whatsoever.

And their eyes. They move like real eyes but they don’t really see cause there is a thick film of sh*t covering them. Now the mouth, that is a different story! It works perfectly! er… except that it is connected to a non functioning brain, of course. A brain that needs to be programmed and reprogrammed to fit the situation.

The factories that produce these trolls, and the wingnuts that program them over at LG Footfungus, Redstink and their ilk, are abject failures as evidenced by the trolls that appear here. Sadly these idiot, no nothing trolls find their way over here all too frequently, and we have to listen to their programmed drivel.

And what is worse, I hear that there are presidential candidates that represent these losing freaks. I think they call themselves Republipukes… no, Repukes, or something like that. Anyway, the election in ‘09 will be a laugher as they go crashing down to the worst defeat in this country’s history.

Rumor has it that these trolls and their inept masters believe that their current leader, (who got to be president by some of the worst shenanagins I have ever seen,) will go down in history as one of the greatest presidents of all time! Right up there with Lincoln they say. Whooooie! Now, that takes some stretchin’ of the old imagination, in my book.

If anyone wants to know what drives the Becks, O’lielys, Limpballs and their ilk to say the insane things they do, read the article by Laird Wilcox called:

    The Practice of Ritual Defamation

How values, opinions and beliefs are
    controlled in democratic societies.

    In it he states:
“It’s important to recognize and identify the patterns of a ritual defamation. Like all propaganda and disinformation campaigns it is accomplished primarily through the manipulation of words and symbols. It is not used to persuade, but to punish. Although it may have cognitive elements, its thrust is primarily emotional. Ritual Defamation is used to hurt, to intimidate, to destroy, and to persecute, and to avoid the dialogue, debate and discussion upon which a free society depends. On those grounds it must be opposed no matter who tries to justify its use.”

Beck does this here by attempting to intimidate and destroy environmentalists. This is a Republic technique going back to the 1980s. Recall what Bush did to McCain in 1999, the destruction of Max Cleland in 2002 and John Kerry in 2004. With Kerry it developed the name, Swiftboating. But these obvious examples are just the tip of the iceberg. Rupublics use this kind of tactic constantly. Anybody who disagrees with them lacks patriotism, is a trator or is loony to believe what they do.
So what they say is not insane, nor are they stupid. It is a tactic that is used purposefully. It is the “means” to their ends. Sadly, it has worked very well for Lee Atwater and Rove.

We Democrats need to stop complaining about Glen, Bill and Rush etc. as if they are the problem. (Like getting rid of them is the solution. Stepping on ants does nothing to the nest!) They are but mercenaries using a proven tactic in support of their “betters.” We need to have the balls to stand up to them and reject their manipulation, as well as go on the attack against their “betters”, also known as BushCo. Now if the Dems in Congress would do that!…

You can’t look at the economic cost without looking at the offsetting economic benefit. How much of the supposed 2.4 trillion has been poured into the U.S. Economy? How many jobs have been created? How much has been paid back in tax dollars? Until you know the answers to these questions, talking only about “cost” is meaningless.

So that is your idea of jacking up the economy then? Illegally invade and occupy a country in order have money “poured into the U.S. Economy?” Bomb and kill the country’s civilians and figure the cost benefits to the U.S. You are a whack job if you think this way. And if you don’t, you are simply a troll with nothing but programmed rubbish coming out of your mouth.

He was quite happy to sneer at all the people who’ve lost their homes to the wildfires — so why should I offer him any charity when he never has any to offer other people? What goes around, comes around…)

GLOBAL WARMING! GLOBAL WARMING! GLOBAL WARMING! GLOBAL WARMING! GLOBAL WARMING! GLOBAL WARMING! GLOBAL WARMING!

Beck and Malkin are correct; certain litigious “environmentalists” who do not understand forestry have prevented responsible thinning and controlled burns. Native Americans successfully used controlled burns to manage the forests long before anyone worried about anthropogenic global warming.

California Fires: What the Governor failed to mention is that he vetoed four bills that would have increased staffing and fire resources after the Cedar Fire, at a cost of tens of millions of dollars. A fifth bill, signed by Schwarzenegger, requires local governments to first submit safety plans to the California Department of Forestry and will not take effect until 2010, the Los Angeles Times reported in a May 20, 2007 article titled “Fire danger acute as 2003 lessons fade.” 10/25

wow, you aren’t afraid to display your ignorance and lack of education, are you? republicans are so proud of their stupidity, it’s quite amazing.

Turns out I was Right. At least two (and probably more) of the fires were caused by Arson. There has been at least one arrest and one suspect shot dead. Soon we will find out if either suspect was a radical environmentalist trying to bring attention to things like “global warming.”

It seems like one of the SUSPECTED arsonists drove a dirty pickup truck. Until we hear more, don’t assume Progressives or Environmentalists did this. After all, who ran over all the crosses at Cindy Crawford’s setup? Rednecks in pickups. Who bombed Murrah building? Right Wing Extremist. Who is fighting these insane wars in the Middle East? Right Wing Christian and Muslim Crazies. Violence against nature, animals, buildings, and people is wrong, whether done by the left or the right.

global warming is nothing more than an industry for algore and others to make obscene profits, and a useful vehicle to heap major tax increases upon all of us.

  151. squidbilly says:

Read Mike Davis’ Ecology of Fear: Los Angeles and the Imagination of Disaster. He describes uncontrolled land development in the ecologically unstable foot hills of so cal as being a site of potential disaster. Santa Anna winds, dry arid climate and fires have always been there (with or without global warming).

Its the natural geography and seriously poor planning that is the problem.

  152. Tender Chicken says:

CT (#207): What about the obscene profits the defense industry made waging an unnecessary war? What about Halliburton’s obscene profits? What about the oil companies’ obscene profits? Please do go on about the obscene profits made from the war-of-choice in Iraq. If someone is going to make obscene profits, I would rather they be made by those who save our planet, rather than those who destroy it.

‘global worming,’ global deworming, globular warming, global warming. Yep, its all there,TCDon, and its worldwide. You’d have to listen to BBC and CBC and other Global news orgs who report on worldwide news. Please step outside your city/state/wherever and tap into those. Hell, even Reuters reports worldwide changes. What happens in the US is only a snippet of what is happening worldwide. Arson? of course, ciggie butts thrown out car windows; campfires by cold illegals coming through the chapparal(sp), forests (such as they are in SoCal), lightning strikes? those too! Forest fires creat their own weather systems, including lightning strikes, or didn’t the Weatherguys tell you that? Stop being in denial, and stop believing in everything mommy serves you for breakfast and dinner on CNN and FOX. They’re only there for entertainment (remember the Romans gave their citizens ‘blood and circuses,’ to keep them occupied while the Goths and Visigoths and Vandals were at the gates of their fragile empire).
