Bush Budget Request Raises Fears Of Iran Strike, Increases Funding For ‘Massive’ ‘Bunker Buster’»

cheneyspeech24.JPGIn light of the administration’s increasingly threatening rhetoric on Iran, CQ reports that members of Congress are worried by Bush’s recent budget proposal. In particular, they cite his request to equip B-2 “stealth” bombers with a new 30,000-pound bunker buster as a “sign of plans for an attack on Iran“:

Buried in the $196.4 billion supplemental war spending proposal that Bush submitted to Congress on Oct. 22 is a request for $88 million to modify B-2 bombers so they can drop a Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP, a conventional bomb still in development that is the most powerful weapon designed to destroy targets deep underground.

A White House summary accompanying the supplemental spending proposal said the request for money to modify B-2s to carry the bombs came in response to “an urgent operational need from theater commanders.” […]

Previous statements by the Defense Department and the program’s contractors, along with interviews with military experts, suggest the weapon is meant for the kind of hardened targets found chiefly in Iran.

The B-2 bomber and MOPs are reportedly choice weapons for strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities. In January, the BBC reported that the administration had drawn up plans for “long range B2 stealth bombers” to “drop ‘bunker-busting‘ bombs” in an effort to penetrate, for example, the Natanz enrichment facility in Iran.

The MOP has been in development for several years. After its completion, a U.S. military officer proudly described the destructive power of the bunker buster, specifically saying it could be used against Iran:

The U.S. has a 14-ton super bomb more destructive than the vacuum bomb just tested by Russia, a U.S. general said Wednesday.

The statement was made by retired Lt. General McInerney, chairman of the Iran Policy Committee, and former Assistant Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force.

McInerney said the U.S. has “a new massive ordnance penetrator that’s 30,000 pounds, that really penetrates … Ahmadinejad has nothing in Iran that we can’t penetrate.”

It is amazing that Bush squandered the opportunity to aid the reform party in Iran in the aftermath of 9/11. The Iranians were forced to assist the US which was seen a victim of an unjustified attack. The majority of the Iran’s citizens supported our position. Look at what Bush could do in a few months by calling them a part of the axis of evil. Look at what Bush could do by leading an invasion into Iraq that without true international support. Now look at the president of Iran. Now look at how it increased attempts to gain nuclear weapons. We live in a dangerous world made all the more dangerous by an incompetent fool as president. GOD HELP OUR SOLDIERS WHO WILL DIE SHOULD BUSH GO THROUGH WITH HIS STUPID ATTACKS ON IRAN,.

His glasses fall off his head seemingly in slow motion and crack into an irreparable number of pieces. for probably the first time in his life, he breaks down and sobs like a child, “it isn’t fair…it just isn’t fair..there was finally time now…”. It’s then that he realizes through his suicidal teary haze that he has misplaced his shotgun and without his glasses will be cursed to spend the rest of his days trying to convince his Clintonskull mug that he used to run the most powerful nation in the world. After a few minutes he regains his composure enough to skullf@ck his coffee mug while screaming out for no one to hear, “I still got it, baby!”

Countries don’t use nukes for the same reason we don’t - the enemy might use them back! It’s called a ‘deterrent’, and it’s the reason we negotiated with N. Korea instead of attacking them! They understood this, and so does Iran. The problem is that countries like Israel and the US don’t really want to negotiate in good faith, we prefer to ‘dictate’ to others how it’s gonna be.

That’s all true. However if Iran or some other Muslim country nuked Israel (they most likely wouldn’t because it would kill as many Palestinian Muslims as Jews), Israel would most certainly poison the well for the Arab world and do their best to destroy those oil resources out of spite. 55. StratRat Says:

When we do anything to Iran, look for Russia and China (and about a billion muslims) to back up Iran. China lends the US billions and billions of dollars every week - just so we can pay our bills. Think about that: What would happen if China just said no. We are going to invest in another instrument, not US securities. How can we pay our daily - and I mean daily -bills without the extra capital we borrow?

If you have government pensions, forget about them. If your parents get government pensions, they will have to live with you. How about medicare and social security? They will have to be “suspended” until the US can get liquid again. How about our national debt? We pay more in interest, than we do the entire defense budget. How is it going to be when the other creditor nations decide we are not a good credit risk? How many taxes will need to be raised just to pay for our necessities (defense and salaries for the executive branch)? Congress? What congress? Anyone who counts on a government - or government sponsored benefit - can forget about that check arriving in the mail.

How about the $100-$250 a barrel spike in oil prices? Can you afford to pay $10.00 - $25.00 a gallon for gas? Could you get to work? How about the prices going up for those items that are trucked into your local store?
This isn’t some economics exercise. It is real and once it occurs, there is no “changing the channel”. It will be hell, and it will be here.

So for all the jingo and sabre rattling, it is clear ANY unilateral effort by the US will begin the downfall of our economy and our ability to defend ourselves around the globe. It takes money to run an empire.

Surely we, as a citizenry, won’t allow that to happen, will we? Well. Will we? Is it ok to hit Iran (but not weaken it) as a balance for our country being ruined financially? Your thoughts are appreciated.

And that is what my rather large rant was (is) all about. If a few countries just changed how they held their reserves and how they invested in other securities and instruments, we could be doomed to bankruptcy.

I would like folks like Billy and TCDon to comment on this. Is it ok to ruin our country financially as a balance for unilaterally invading Iran? Since this thought requires some education and sensitivity to global realities, I would not expect them to offer much in the way of guidance. I imagine they are better suited for throwing rocks at blind kids.

“Meanwhile, as the trial date was postponed yet again, the legal bills of the defendants have reached a record high. According to unofficial estimates within the defense team, both defendants have already incurred $7 million in legal fees a figure that might grow to $10 million by the time the case is over, making this trial one of the costliest in American history.

An agreement reached several months ago between Aipac and lawyers for Weissman ensures that the lobby will cover Weissman’s legal costs. A similar agreement is still being negotiated between Aipac and Rosen’s lawyers.”

The MOP is 14 ton (28,000 pounds) $4.2 million to create a new rack?

If they can make the new rack or adapt an older rack for $100,000 where does the other $4.1M per plane go?

Israel has over 200 nuclear devices. Iran has zero. If Iran gets 2 nuclear devices (one to keep, one to give to terrorists, in your side’s scenario), then…

    Then…?

    Then what?

Then Israel loses one city, and Iran loses dozens of cities overnight. Iran is not that stupid. Iran would have to build up nuclear weapons enough to compete with Israel. And then…

    Then…?

    Then what?

Then, Mutually Assured Destruction grips the Middle East, and it becomes in all of their best interests to assure that all nuclear devices be carefully handled, lest one slip from their grip and spark an incident that turns the entire Middle East into a sheet of glass.

Right now, we have one state (Israel) who refuses to abide by international law with regards to nuclear devices. Yet, that state wants the rest of the world to aid it in preventing the other states in the region from having the same level of national defense. Right now, every nation except Israel in the Middle East is at (much) greater risk than the aforementioned state that defies international nuclear weapons standards and laws. Israel could overnight destroy every major city of every enemy it has in the region. No other state in the region can claim the same. Do you honestly wonder why the rest of the region is up in arms about the entire situation? Would you say the same were the situation reversed, and Iran is the one that has had 200+ nukes, and noone else the the region did, including Israel? No, it would be insisted that Israel be allowed to have such devices for the sake of its survival. The same level of survival that the Saudis, Iraqis, Iranians, Syrians, Turks, and so one desire.

Designing bombs…a noble use of time. When you look at Cheney and Bush they just look…well, like simple guys ya know. But deep down they’re complex and thoughtful and both of them have always wanted to be designers. Now, look at what they’re up to. They want to spend billions more on making war. While they let our country languish, they build bombs. Makes sense to me. How ’bout you. If our sick kids need help let ‘em eat cake, if our health system is broken screw it, Bush and Cheney have health programs provided by the very people they could give a shit less about. How about our Social Security contract. In 1961 I began paying in so I could have some little amount of security in the future. I have worked for 42 years and now I am reaping some of the benefit I paid for. My son who is 22 has not a prayer of benefitting from Social Security. What’s in the offing for him and young people like him? And they build bombs. They recruit kids and get them killed, they build bombs, they steal elections, they tap our phones and they are trying to destroy congress. I guess they figure they’ll need the bombs after they’ve torn everything down. Well they, Bush and Cheney, have a short time to make their bombs and if we are lucky, we’ll get out from under these fascist pricks before irreparable damage is done. But until then the beat goes on.

It brings such despair and disillusionment to so many….
