During debate of the DREAM Act today, lead sponsor Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-IL) railed against Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), accusing him of “bigotry and hatred” after the anti-immigration lawmaker called for the arrest yesterday of three college-aged immigration activists who vocally supported the bill. “America is a better nation than what we hear from the likes of that congressman,” said Durbin. Watch it:
In a 52-44 vote today, the Senate failed to invoke cloture on the DREAM Act, effectively killing the bill.
UPDATE: Though he sponsored the DREAM Act in 2005, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) skipped out on the vote this afternoon.
Thanks, Sen. Durbin, for speaking the truth and chastising Tancredo. Will Durbin be forced to apologize in the face of censure by wacko GOP Senators?
Is McConnell cooking up a censure resolution against Durbin?
October 24th, 2007 at 5:50 pmAs much as I hate the republicans for constantly using the filibuster to block bills that the majority of the Senate supports, the dems could learn a thing or two from these tactics when it comes to bending over for Bush’s constant requests (ie. FISA, war fundng, etc.)
October 24th, 2007 at 5:50 pmHa ha ha, if you’re not an American Indian you’re all immigrants or descendents of immigrants. Who are you to decide your family was “legal”?
October 24th, 2007 at 5:50 pmRepublicans: keeping Amurca safe from immigrants.
Those terrorists won’t be spiking gumball machines any time soon with us Republicans on guard!!!
Way to go. *eyeroll*
October 24th, 2007 at 5:57 pmSlamming Tancredo’s bigotry and hatred is like slamming Jeffrey Dahmer’s choice of cuisine. It’s unlikely to get an opposing argument, it’s objectionable to reasonable people everywhere, and it’s not likely to change.
Remember, this guy (Tancredo) is the guy who thinks bombing the Ka’aba in Mecca is a wonderful idea.

Tough on college kids , while nut hugging the tiny sack of the worst president in US history………Way to go horseshit GOP ; you guys sure know how to find ‘em and pick ‘em .
October 24th, 2007 at 6:02 pmI really don’t understand opposition to the DREAM Act. This is for immigrants who are working and going to college. There are a number of conditions that have to be met, and a criminal record will ruin you completely. Aren’t these the type immigrants we want? I would understand the opposition if this covered felons and dangerous illegals, but this is for immigrants who came here as small children, and who are actively working to become productive members of society. Have you seen the conditions that have to be met? I wish most Americans would live up to these.

So “Tancredo” is O. Bigfoot’s real name?
October 24th, 2007 at 6:05 pmI am Native American and I say most all of the country are illegal immigrants, Tancredo, we just don’t want the Repukian to stay, you can go back to where you came from which would make this a much better country, thank you.

Yep, we Native Americans can just tell the Bigots to go back home to the country they or their ancestors were kicked out of. No tribe gave them green cards, or ok’d their visas now did they?
October 24th, 2007 at 6:19 pmMy thoughts exactly. You beat me to it. I don’t understand why they even bother with these comments… only to cave in and later apologize.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:24 pmAnd they slaughtered us when we offered help, they poisoned and gave us diseased blankets to wipe us out, then they proceeded to destroy and poison our land and not live in harmony with nature, they didn’t deserve green cards or visas for sure. And now their great leader GW666 is out to destroy they world, not much of a legacey if you ask me.

October 24th, 2007 at 6:25 pmDurbin, like Stark, will eventually apologize. Unfortunately he will apologize to his Republican counterparts for his comments and not to the people of the United States of America for his cowardice.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:26 pmOur treatment of the American Indian is shameful. Yet, today, we are seeing a legacy of that by the more numerous, the more wealthy, the more secure, the more advantaged demagogues step on the necks of those who are trying to make a better life for themselves, and indirectly, for the country.

October 24th, 2007 at 6:40 pmThis is Washington, DC (place without represenation, invaded by outsiders) groveling in inuendo, slur, cheap talk, character assasination and more extreme.
Isn’t America great?

The Eagles song, The Last Resort, comes to mind for me:
She came from Providence,
the one in Rhode Island
Where the old world shadows hang
heavy in the air
She packed her hopes and dreams
like a refugee
Just as her father came across the sea
She heard about a place people were smilin’
They spoke about the red man’s way,
and how they loved the land
And they came from everywhere
to the Great Divide
Seeking a place to stand
or a place to hide
Down in the crowded bars,
out for a good time,
Can’t wait to tell you all,
what it’s like up there
And they called it paradise
I don’t know why
Somebody laid the mountains low
while the town got high
Then the chilly winds blew down
Across the desert
through the canyons of the coast, to
the Malibu
Where the pretty people play,
hungry for power
to light their neon way
and give them things to do
Some rich men came and raped the land,
Nobody caught ‘em
Put up a bunch of ugly boxes, and Jesus,
people bought ‘em
And they called it paradise
The place to be
They watched the hazy sun, sinking in the sea
You can leave it all behind
and sail to Lahaina
just like the missionaries did, so many years ago
They even brought a neon sign: “Jesus is coming”
Brought the white man’s burden down
Brought the white man’s reign
Who will provide the grand design?
What is yours and what is mine?
‘Cause there is no more new frontier
We have got to make it here
We satisfy our endless needs and
justify our bloody deeds,
in the name of destiny and the name of God
And you can see them there,
October 24th, 2007 at 7:16 pmOn Sunday morning
They stand up and sing about
what it’s like up there
They call it paradise
I don’t know why
You call someplace paradise,
kiss it goodbye
Durbin needs to apologize now and get it over with.

They were immigrants too. They immigrated from Asia via the land bridge many thousands of years ago.
Who are you to decide your family was “legal
I do not decide; the U.S. Constitution does.

You would not be on a computer typing this revanchist drivel were it not for Europeans. Also, you should not be driving a car, attending any institutions of higher learning, or going to a hospital to take advantage of modern medicine. (Go to the local medicine man instead!)

Yes, if only America could be transported back to the halcyon days of yore, when there were only teepees, dirt, and human sacrifice in Mesoamerica. If I sport a loincloth and warpaint, can I join in your atavistic vision for America?

what’s the difference between them and George Bush, a sociopathic mass-murderer? besides the fact that the Indians had great personal courage, something Bush knows nothing about? You wouldn’t last ten seconds in the native Aemrican world, you pussy.

Iraqis? I think you mean Mesopotamians/Sumerians/Babylonians stupid; ‘Iraqi’ is a modern designation. In any event, mathematics was discovered by several different cultures. Europeans, however, are responsible for discovering and developing modern mathematics. The same goes for medicine. You need to read more than coloring books, dude.

No, I obviously have beaten you into the ground. Nice sidestepping, little girl, but your Eurocentric crap has no basis in fact or history, and has nothing to do with your party’s abject failures over the past century, or the prevailing stupidity of a right wing that would allow a pig like Bush to screw up an entire country, then worship him for it. You have no defense, no matter how you may like to twist facts and history to fit your lame-ass narrative. Y*ou are a loser, without a thought of your own, and you can wear that mantle for the next 50 years or so. You are in the rapidly-falling 24% of idiots who still swallow the GOP crap whole, and you are done, ruined and over. Good riddance.

October 25th, 2007 at 2:23 amCome now TP,
You failed to mention that these “students” were illegal alieans committing felonies. To have felons on the steps of our capital would be horrid. Obviously they need to be jailed until they can be deported. This isn’t a post, this is a lie by TP to not simply state these are illegals not students.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:37 amThe children of illegal immigrants are all around us. If all of you took the time to open your minds and hearts, you’d see that they are the people you already knew, and you already loved and cared for.
My daughter is now 23. Her best friend from kindergarden on, came to us over a year ago, and told us her family came here illegally from Mexico when she was a baby. She speaks english without any trace of accent. She knew only this country. She never went back to Mexico, so she knew no one there. With all the talk of putting 12 million Mexicans on buses and sending them back, she decided to try and legalize her status. She was told she had to return to Mexico and apply from there. No one could promise how long it would take. We all hoped she’d be given a Visa and be back home in a few days. It took one year. She lived in a strange and foreign country for an entire year, waiting for the letter that would allow her to return here to the country that is as much her’s as it is mine. I admire her so much for the terror she went thru waiting. She is now waiting for her Social Security card and she will be ready to start her first real job. She will then learn to drive and get a driver’s license. I don’t condone illegal workers sneaking into the US, but when a child of illegal immigrants have been here all their lives, lived as model citizens all their lives, they deserve a break. I was so ashamed that this country sent her away like that. It should have been possible to apply for residency while living safely in the only country she’s ever know. Well, she’s home now, and it’s over in her case! We need to help the other offspring who have spent their entire lives here, and not put them through an experience that was both dangerous and so unnecessary!
