The House just voted 265-142 to approve revised SCHIP expansion legislation, but fell short of the two-thirds needed to uphold a veto by President Bush. Twenty-seven members didn’t vote. The bill would “add $35 billion to the State Children’s Health Insurance Program” and “addressed critics’ concerns about participation by adults, illegal immigrants and families able to afford health insurance.”

Roll call HERE.

And if Bush Vetoes it, keep sending it. Maybe send it attached to something Bush wants. This is how you compromise and negotiate, Dems.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:37 pmTwenty-seven members didn’t vote.
I think they call that plausible deniability. What a bunch of cowards.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:39 pmThey should do this every week and make it the news that Dubya and the crime family hates kids.
For all the sanctimonious hypocrites on the reich….helping the least of us is a Christian thing to do whereas homosexuality is not mentioned.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:39 pmI have to say, wonder if Rove is pulling strings from his cave? Please do not for a minute think that Rove and his assistant who also left are not still playing dirty tricks, they just can do it without Waxman calling them out. How can these representatives get away without voting ? What a bunch of weinies !
October 25th, 2007 at 5:40 pmIronically, now I want Bush to have to veto it again…
October 25th, 2007 at 5:41 pmWhy arent Pelosi and Reid on TV Lambasting and destoying the republican party for this.
Svore some points, beat those republicans to hell.
Make Americans realize how morally bankrupt Republicans are…
Dems need better leadership, yes?
October 25th, 2007 at 5:42 pmIt always did set the limit at $62,000. It is ONLY NY that wanted $83,000. What a bunch of bullsh!t.

Comment by overlap — October 25, 2007 @ 5:42 pm
What? Pelosi and Reid actually going after the Republicans and doing something?
Do you think they are supposed to be in the opposition party or something?
Oh, yeah they are….
“Got Table?”
October 25th, 2007 at 5:48 pmHmmmmmm…..
Harry Reid has already seen his Dem Senators abondon him on his attempts to achieve partisan goals, so how long do you think it will be before Nanci Pelosi starts losing her Dems?
October 25th, 2007 at 5:49 pm#7 Bush flat out lied about this and other points regarding this legislation as well. Just flat lied. But his bootlicking supporters don’t see a problem with the fact that Bush is a compulsive liar.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:50 pmThis is just ridiculous and sad….I have the hardest time explaining civics to my children without throwing up my hands and saying ‘but none of that matters because nothing works anyways’
October 25th, 2007 at 5:50 pmYes, if Bushie vetoes it, send it up again, and again, and again. He is the one who will look foolish - the Dems will look persistent.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:50 pmAt least three non-voters are from the San Diego area. These are Hunter, Bilbray, and Filner. I’m sure they didn’t vote because they are back in their districts because of the fires. Filner undoubtedly supports the bill, and Hunter (a certifiable nutcase) likely opposes it. I don’t know about Bilbray.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:54 pmWhat the Dems have done is not bullshit. They’ve taken the rhetorical arguments repubs used and made changes to the bill to negate those arguments. Bush may veto again and they may support him, but they won’t be able to use the same bogus arguments.
If they can’t override the veto, Dems have vowed to bring the bill up again in September of 2008 right in front of the voters before the next election. Repubs are already whining that this would be a “cheap politcal trick.”
October 25th, 2007 at 5:54 pmI just love watching Republicans self-destruct.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:56 pmIf it is vetoed again, SEND IT AGAIN!
…AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN, AND AGAIN.
Make the Republicans stand up and proclaim their disdain for America’s children.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:57 pm#6 Democrat leader ? You mean like there are two parties? You surely must be mistaken, its us (taxpayers) against the takers, thats all.

That is how it should be done: over and over again. Same bill, same veto. Same bill, same veto. The repubs will crack if they have to deal with this issue time and time again. Their constituants will slowly realize the repubs are on the wrong side of this. The repubs are supporting a vastly unpopular king to the detriment of the children - maybe your children. Repubs must call their congresscritters and tell them to support the children, not a petulant little man.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:04 pm27 members didn’t vote?? That means 27 misanthropes posturing as real reps of the people. Let’s out and oust them all!
October 25th, 2007 at 6:12 pmStratrat: Absolutely. They need to hammer their bills till the cows come home and they wear down the Reptards in Congress.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:13 pmIf vetoed, send it again and again. Keep S-”CHIPing away, until the g.o.p. opposition folds.

Isn’t voting on important bills sort of in their job description? Are they just trying to avoid having to go on record with their positions? This is lame that they couldn’t bring themselves to either stand with Mr. 24% or with the children of America. We need to find an extra backbone for these politicians.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:15 pmWe don’t know who didn’t vote, maybe some of them withheld their votes so W could veto it and they could override the veto. Too soon to tell.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:17 pmThank God these people are FINALLY acting like they’re the majority.
I might have to take back some of the nasty things I’ve said about Reid Pelosi and Waxman.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:24 pmMy Representative, Bill Shuster of PA’s 9th Congressional District, didn’t vote. There were no fires here in PA. Representative Shuster spent the last 2 weeks writing editorials saying he loves SCHIP, but he couldn’t vote for it because it gave illegal immigrants health insurance. Now that there is direct language addressing his concerns, I wonder why he didn’t vote?
October 25th, 2007 at 6:25 pmthey’ll fight him on this, but they won’t touch anything controversial about the war. they’re still cowards in my mind–all of them.
(that being said, push this thing through until it passes, i don’t care how many times he vetoes it. it makes him look like a dork every time. at some point even chimpy will get tired of looking like an arse.)
October 25th, 2007 at 6:32 pmSome posters here seem to think Democrats can tell the media that they would like to make public statements about Repubs and the media will cooperate. Where did you get that idea? The media, which is owned by corporations who know that republican deregulation is better for their profits than Democratic regulation, do not really cooperate all that much with Democrats.

Fenders…I do travel the atmosphere once in a while, but the moniker comes from the guitars I play.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:10 pmAwsome.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:13 pmColonel, I like your posts. It appears to me that you have “been around the block” once or twice. I mean that in the best way. You bring good insights to the discussion, and I know you are respected by the other bloggers here at TP.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:17 pmHey, thanks a lot. That’s great to hear. I wouldn’t come here if I didn’t also like reading yours and other posters’ opinions about these things.
The only thing I sometimes find strange about these discussion is how much anger there is at Democrats.
October 25th, 2007 at 7:25 pmTo Pelosi and Reid, Vote every day on S-CHIP. Watch Bush veto it, and vote again, and again, and again.
Remind all Americans that Mitch McConnell started the S-CHIP smear job on the Frost family and then lied about it, on camera.
Nail the GOP SOBs on S-CHIP every day of the week.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:35 pmPerfect examples are L.A Times, S.F. Chronicle.

proof? links?
I didn’t think so. The media has been dominantly rightwing for 30 years, which is why America is in the dumper, hated worldwide, and losing all its wars. Bush can continue to veto giving aid and assistance to poor kids; it will just make the destruction of the GOP more complete. There will be serious hell to pay after 1/20/09, and hillary or Obama or Edwards is going to have a field day jailing republican slime with their new powers. I’m looking forward to perp-walks of repukes on a daily basis. I hope to see Bush hang, and will fly to the Hague to witness it personally.

spoken like a scared traitor, TC, and you should be. We are going after lawbraking scum, not political enemies. learn some history before shooting your ignorant yap off.
October 25th, 2007 at 11:46 pmBill gets vetoed, children suffer.
How is this a victory for the right?
October 26th, 2007 at 1:01 amHere’s the question all progressives should be asking, over and over again. Why do Republicans hate Americans?
October 26th, 2007 at 3:08 am#37 - “The only network that doesn’t completely cave to the libs is FOX.” Comment by TCDon — October 25, 2007 @ 9:01 pm
That’s because they’re too busy whoring for the cons they don’t have time to be “fair and balanced” to both sides!
Liberals have never had a stranglehold on any media. It’s yet another canard by the right-whiners in an attempt to scare people into voting fo their extremist agenda.
Thank God that most Americans have woken up to the egregious behavior of the ultra-radical right-whiners!
October 26th, 2007 at 8:14 amInstead of political show boating, Democrats need to join Republicans to figure out a MUTUALLY acceptable compromise and quit acting like spoiled kids!
