Right Wing Enraged: Laura Bush Is A ‘Butt-Kisser’ For Wearing Headscarf In Mideast

lauraWhen House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) wore a headscarf while visiting the Umayyad mosque in Damascus in April, the right wing pounced on her, attacking her as “subservient” and calling the act “disgust[ing].” Ironically, the right wing failed to note that First Lady Laura Bush had also worn a headscarf while previously visiting the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

During a tour of the Middle East this week, Laura Bush again donned a traditional hijab given to her as a gift by a Saudi Arabian doctor. Subsequently, several progressive bloggers questioned whether similar “opprobium” would follow from the right wing this time. Now we have our answer.

The conservative blogosphere has released its seething intolerance, collectively rising up to denounce Laura Bush as “Ms. Pander Clause” for wearing the head cover:

“I find the image from Saudi Arabia so disturbing. … That she would oblige her hosts by wearing a shmata on her head is a tacit endorsement of Islam’s subjugation of women.” — Weekly Standard

Bad craziness in Saudi Arabia … [W]e get this, from one of the most misogynistic societies on the planet: a photo of Laura Bush wearing an abaya and a veil. — Little Green Footballs

This is Sheikha Laura, yesterday, in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia … Laura Bush [is] butt-kissing Saudi King Abdullah.” — Debbie Schlussel

Showing tolerance and respect for other cultures is interpreted as “butt-kissing” by far right conservatives.

UPDATE: Jeffrey Feldman boils down the White House perspective:

Islamofascism – Bad! (nuclear war, invasion, death)

Islamofashion – Good! (smiles, happy, love)

UPDATE II: Carpetbagger notes that Atlas Shrugs called the picture the “Nightmare Pic of the Day,” stating, “We are the king of the world. We are the best and the brightest. We are America goddammit. … This is submission.”

Proof for this? Republicans refuse to support health care for children, but support taking away the right for a woman to make her own choices.

Good grief — these neopublicons get wrapped around the axle about the most trivial and inane shit that doesn’t mean a damned thing.

Seriously, now, is Laura Bush (or Nancy Pelosi, for that matter) wearing a hijab going to change whether the sun rises in the East and sets in the West?

Is the Earth going to stop revolving around the Sun? Will a bear stop s*itting in the woods? I think not.

Now I know why I have developed allergic reactions to neocons — stupidity and irrationality always does that to me.

P.S. I have to confess though I do get a twisted perverse pleasure out of watching these “neopublicons” go off the deep end seemingly every day. It is hysterically and outrageously hilarious!

When visiting St. Peter’s in Rome, visitors are asked to dress appropriately. I would no more think of wearing a tank top to the Holy See as I would think of not donning a head covering when visiting a mosque. If I visit an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, I would keep my head covered; perhaps not in a Reform, though I would take my cues from how members of the congregation are attired. It’s all a matter of respect – respecting the sensitivities of those you are visiting and respecting yourself as being thoughtful enough to consider the feelings and customs of others.

Wearing a headscarf isn’t exactly radical, just as foot bathing isn’t very radical. It’s not required by the Quraan, in fact – only by some of the more regressive societies in the region. For most Muslim women, the hijab is a choice, not a requirement.

Now what’s radical is the government requiring a woman to carry a baby to term and undergo hours of labor just because some theocrats say it’s against their religion.

Zooey I am so sorry to hear that a qualified medical expert had to discuss this matter with you and bring to your attention the reality of what life would have been like for a tragically developmental disabled child. I know it must be very hard to lose a child but luckily nature usually terminates these matters on its own and only in extremely rare circumstances do medical experts in consultation with women such as yourself have to intervene in this unpleasant but necessary manner. No medical professional nor mother utilizes this as a means of terminating an unwanted pregnancy. A couple of kooks aside, the rest of the thinking world understands and offers you our condolences while respecting your privacy and the dignity of your family. So you got any braindead family members somebody that doesn’t know you wants to force you to keep “alive” for reasons which only promote the continued suffering of all involved?

  62. alibomaye says:

If people want to have a problem with her wearing a headscarf OKay. It doesn’t make it any better, but OKay. What I’m wondering though is how “Little Green Footballs” can have a problem with her wearing an abaya? If she was on a diplomatic trip to India and she wore a sari would these people have a problem with it? Its just a way of dress, no not all women in Saudi Arabia wear Abayas and not all women in India wear saris but, if a diplomat wants to wear one while visit so be it. The sad thing is that this takes away from the real purpose of her trip – to spread awareness about the alarming rates of breast cancer and treatment options in Saudi Arabia. You’d think Bush supporters would like to play up any possibility for good publicity but then again…

  63. missmolly says:

I hardly think that sources such as Debbie Schlussel and the Weekly Standard are worth paying attention to, but their ignorance of Islamic culture and customs is stupefying.

    1) It’s customary for women to cover their heads in a mosque (or masjid, if you want to use the correct term), as a sign of deference to God (not as a sign of deference to men). This is similar to Catholics covering their heads in a Catholic church, or Jews wearing yarmulkes in a synagogue. Laura Bush would have received far more criticism if she had attempted to barge into the masjid with her head uncovered and shoes on her feet (although she probably would have been denied entrance), as that would have been been almost as insulting as if she had gone in and peed on the floor. Yes, Laura could have avoided visiting the masjid altogether, but somehow I don’t think the fanatical bigots see that as the point.

    2) Laura Bush isn’t the only female visitor from the west to don a head covering when visiting a masjid. Queen Elizabeth II has done the same. I doubt that Her Majesty sees herself as “butt-kissing.” She does, however, have respect for protocol. I myself am an avowed feminist who would take umbrage at any effort to subjugate me in any way, yet I cover my head when I go with my friends to their masjid.

    2) Laura Bush was not endorsing the subjugation of women by her dress, because in Islam modesty (the reason behind the covering) has nothing to do with subjugation. Modesty is required of BOTH sexes in the Muslim faith (and personally, I find this preferable to the custom we have here of dressing like a tart in low rise pants and midriff baring tops with undies showing everywhere).

I would imagine that reasonable people on both sides of the political fence have no problem with Laura Bush’s clothing. This condemnation comes from a few kooks on the far right who want to spew their hatred of Muslims in general.

Actually, this is a rare display of somebody in the Bush administration doing the right thing. Respecting common practices and customs in a foreign land should always be the rule. Good job Laura.

  92. Lefty Patriot says:

    Good job Laura.

But now she needs a refill real bad.

  93. bilbobaggins says:

I can’t wait for the Democrat President to show Pres. Bush the door on Jan 20th, 2009!

D E M O C R A T I C President, not Democrat President. Please don’t perpetuate the insult that the Republicans have been flinging against us for the last couple of years.

Hasn’t this been debunked enough yet?
    Comment by dbadass

It is impossible to debunk anything that a neoCON sets their mind to. If the RNC say’s it’s true, then it must be true. Facts are irrelevant.

If the RNC had to give up every talking point that had been proven to be a lie, they would only have 3 or 4 talking points left.

  95. wildcleotis says:

This is getting goofy. What do you expect her husband holds hands with the prince. What do you think is going on?

In this case she may have just been trying to be respectful. Personally, I see no harm in that. It’s very unusual for a Bush

  96. Lynn Lightfoot says:

Stories like this one make me wonder who are the patients in mental hospitals. There seem to be a great many obviously crazy people running around loose. Most of them are rude, too, but then one cannot expect normal behavior, much less common courtesy, from the deranged.

  97. Number Cruncher says:

In 1966, a year after my wife and I were married, we wandered around Italy for one wonderful month. Most cathedrals had signs at the entrance instructing women to wear shawls. My wife followed the rule, of course. We were grateful for the privilege of entering those marvelous structures. The idea of calling our hosts cathalofascists would have been offensive and absurd.

If we were visiting a mosque in the middle east, (we never had the opportunity) my wife cerainly would have covered her head. Is there a difference?

  98. shadow7 says:

What a jerk! Doesn’t he have a research staff? In his ridiculous criticism of Laura Bush for wearing a headscarf while visiting Saudi Arabia…. he tried so hard to sound smart. It wasn’t enough that he criticized her for showing respect for another nation’s culture, but he had to be a total idiot, once again…. Trying to sound intelligent never works for him, and it surely didn’t work this time, either.

He said that Laura wore a ’schmata,’ which he claimed is Yiddish for head scarf. IDIOT. The word ’schmata’ is Yiddish for RAG. Yeah, what you’d use to dust the furniture or wipe up spills. But, there’s no one on his show to correct him. They’re all such fools.
