McCain dodges on Mukasey.

McCain dodges on Mukasey.

This morning, ThinkProgress reported that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) strongly denounced the torture technique of waterboarding, and implicitly criticized those — such as Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey and Rudy Giuliani — who have hedged on their own views of the practice. We questioned whether McCain would hold up Mukasey’s confirmation — as many Senate Judiciary Committee members are threatening to do — until Mukasey clarifies his views. The Huffington Post posed that question to a McCain aide, who responded with a dodge:

“The Judiciary Committee process is ongoing and Sen. McCain believes that Judge Mukasey deserves an up-or-down vote based on his qualifications for the office of Attorney General,” a McCain aide said in a Friday e-mail.

A decidedly un-”maverick” reply.

Does this mean McJowell’s no longer believe his own words? “It’s not about who they are, but about who we are.”

  2. hits says:

McCain is being indecisive. He is trying to protect his political future, which seems is quite endangered. Mukasey is q qualified individual. He should be confirmed.

  3. hellinabucket says:

To be fair, this is an aide who gave a politically safe answer. It’s not McCains opinion on Mukasey’s view on torture. Nor is it showing how McCain will vote. It’s a dodge and McCain’s vote will show if he will stand by his convictions or not.

John McCain is a man of poor character. This just strengthens my assertion.

terrorist coddlers? that’s funny. You are forgetting the terrorist attack with anthrax. You are also forgetting the one responsible for attacking us is safe in Pakistan.

Bush has created more terrorists than OBL has. There have been more terrorist attacks worldwide since Bush came to office.

He’s doing a miserable job and you know it.

The judge deserves an “up or down” vote, but important legislation by the Democrats don’t. Hypocrites one and all.

The RNC does seem to be hitting the bottom of the barrel with the trolls these days. They need a little more quality control. You would think that with TP’s standings on the “most threatening” websites list, we would rate a better quality of trolls. On the other hand, maybe the RNC’s pickings are getting slim. They are down to 24%.

“up-or-down vote based on his qualifications ”

Is not the ability to give a simple, truthful answer (”Let your yes be yes and your no be no” the Good Book says) be a qualification to be considered ?

Is not the ability to tell the difference between illegal torture and honest interrogation techniques a specific qualification of ability ?

The repugs keep talking about how the piece of paper doesn’t matter. So what about abilities (such as Brownie, graduates of Regents U, etc. etc. )

    “Weathervane” McCain!!!

  17. Helen Rainier says:

This is another of many stellar examples of why McCain is not a man of his word — or not a man of integrity.

Mukasey didn’t even have the balls to say “Waterboarding is torture.” Perhaps the question that should have been asked is: If you or a family member were waterboarded would you consider it torture?

All of these pols (D & R alike) are such a bitter disappointment with regard to their performance in representing We, the People.

To quote (part) of an old, old Bob Dylan song:

“How many deaths will it take till he knows?
That too many people have died?
The answer my friend is Blowing in the Wind,
The answer is Blowing in the Wind.”

In a way, I think you’re right. If there were any al-Qa’ida cells in the U.S., I’m sure they left long ago. After the east coast blackout and the failures after Katrina and the crash of the housing market and the collapse of the Minneapolis bridge, they all probably realized that there was nothing they could do to us that we weren’t doing already.

LOL…Tell that to the families of the 3800+ soldiers killed and the 30,000+ soldiers wounded in action. Just a quick question: You never served in the armed forces, did you? If you had served, you wouldn’t speak the BS you do. You would have more respect for human life and the ease in which it is taken away.

Yes, he does know it. He truly does. But after all the reverance he has invested in the idiot in chief, what do you expect? He is going to hang on to the bitter end. The only thing he won’t do is enlist and fight. He is a coward, asking other people to die for his hard on…

  22. Arne Langsetmo says:

Oh, he knows whose butt he has to kiss to stand a chance in the primaries. He learned from 2000. Now he’s just shown as the craven opportunist he is … but that’s never been a bar to getting the Republican nomination.

What I don’t understand is why any Republican would want to run for Preznit….

    Cheers,

I think you have his capabilities reasonably well evaluated. But may I respectfully suggest that even “time and a half” wouldn’t get the job done for the likes of him.

    Cheers,

considering we were attacked on 9/11, he’s certainly the biggest failure of our history.
