Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Dorko, the commanding general of the Gulf Region Division, was injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq today. Dorko, who is the highest-ranking American officer to be hurt since the war began in March 2003, is in stable condition. CNN reports:
CNN Senior Pentagon Correspondent Jamie McIntyre notes that Dorko’s injury shows “that even as U.S. troop casualties are coming down, Iraq remains a very deadly place.”
Was he being protected by Blackwater "independent contractors?"

Seriously, I hope his injuries are the kind a person can fully recover from.
October 29th, 2007 at 6:05 pmThat remark about troop casualties coming down is hardly even true. Although the total deaths of U.S. soldiers is down for this month, every other month this year it has above the war long monthly average of 74 except for September, which was only marginally lower at 69. So one month out of 56 makes a trend? I don't think so, although I bet our koolaid guzzling troll TCDon probably buys into it. That is when he is paying attention at all, which is almost never. And let's not forget that 28 policemen were killed and 11 tribal leaders kidnapped in the past 48 hours.
TCDon, the good German.
October 29th, 2007 at 6:05 pmTCDon, unlike you, we want our troops home. You want them there where this happens to them ON A DAILY BASIS.

October 29th, 2007 at 6:21 pmWe are told that the troop deaths are down, yet the wounded are brought home late, late at night to Walter Reed. The caskets being brought home are not photographed for privacy issues.
October 29th, 2007 at 6:21 pmA huge lie involving a brave female soldier concocted to make the administration look good.

I would call that a healthy debate. I like that. Its the times where facts might be a little scarce, and we veer off into neverland; that is the frustrating part.
For all bloggers - left, right, center, whatever - bring us your arguments and bring us your facts. Keep the personal attacks to a minimum and link where necessary. Maybe we will all learn something new today.

There are several forms of literary prose of which sarcasm is my favorite. Mr. Webster's bible, as paraphrased to meet the situation, defines the process of sarcasm to be a sharp and often satirical or ironic wit (I guess you could say the troll was 1/2 right) depending, for its primary effect, on bitter, caustic, and ofter ironic language that is usually directed against an individual, or group of individuals (read King George the Dumb, bushco, and their obsequious sycophantic trolls) who are perceived as less than advertised. It is always nice to enter into a battle of wits with the trolls because we are usually facing an unarmed mouth (or finger as the case may be).

October 29th, 2007 at 7:06 pmWe can believe General Petraeus when he says everything is going great and our soldiers aren't being killed. Ops US Brigadier General Jeff Dorko was attacked with a bomb. No problem we have to believe the lies until the White House gives another story. Al Qaeda doesn't have to do anything since they haven't been their since the invasion. It's been Iraq against Iraq but the Media is saying Al Qaeda. The Bush/Cheney plan in 2000 to take over all the Middle East didn't work. Now that the White House has no allies and Russia/China will protect Iran. What does a coward like Bush do yes call Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter to help with the mess. Bill and Jimmy are honest and the World Leaders will believe them as the White House is now known for who they are liars.
October 29th, 2007 at 7:14 pmOf course, we all wish the General a full recovery.
Unfortunately 3839 soldiers will never recover, and thousands more will live with their wounds forever.
68 died this month and 1100 Iraqis died this month. Twenty more were killed today. Yet, this is supposed to be progress.
I will never understand how anyone can support this war when it has been a lie, illegal, and unnecessary. We were not threatened by Iraq - not long ago, Iraq was our ally. Bush did this for power, glory and oil. He has squandered the power he had, he legacy will be something far less than glorious, and Iraqi oil must remain in Iraqi control. So what has been gained?

The turmoil in the Middle East resulting from wars, and more wars will keep the price trend going upward, specialy now the coming war between Turkey and the Kurds of Iraq.
Another war with Iran will break the camel's back....no telling how much the price per barrel will be,should that happens.
Add to that the mortgage crisis..and the national debt, the dollar price decline..then we are heading to very difficult times indeed.
The irony here that we were told before this war started in Iraq that oil prices will be down, as a result ....!!

If we bomb or invade Iran, look for the price to be $200-$250 per barrel. And if the Iranians keep their oil off the market - which they probably will not do - the price will go even higher. Tough times, indeed.

While it's true that the government won't allow pictures of the many caskets loaded on board cargo planes, the irony is that pictures of a casket and funeral procession have been splashed on the front pages of local newspapers when a local soldier is laid to rest. Funny that the government doesn't try to stop those.

October 29th, 2007 at 7:34 pm#49 does it really matter conservative/troll or just someone who has a different opinion. Some we learn from, some just use fairy stories to hype their opinion. Surely this blog is above the redblogs who will not even allow a dissenting opinion.
There is a big difference between honest conservative input, comment and debate and troll ranting. A troll will use baiting tactics to change the subject. A troll will post outrageous comments either far right or left to enrage, insult and/or steer off topic. A troll will bring up right wing favorite talking points; e.g. Bill Clinton lied, Sandy Berger stold documents vital to our very survival, William Jefferson is the most corrupt, heinous, dispicable politician to ever serve and the left loves him more than anyone, Hillary will make America a socialist, abortion-loving, christian-bashing country, etc.
Feed the conservatives knowledge, insight and truth; Starve the trolls.

We do have a weekly alternative paper which for some reason Kay Baily Hutchinson has been sending in letters to the Editior promoting the war. Seems she would just stay in her comfort zone, she doesn't seem like the brightest lightbulb on her tv interviews.

October 29th, 2007 at 7:43 pm"And if the Iranians keep their oil off the market..."
Comment by StratRat
The Iranians will not keep their oil off "the market" as that is just what bushco wants. The Iranians will do just as Sadam was attempting to do and that is to start selling their oil for Euro instead of US dollars. The US oil business, Daddy Bush et al, would be out of business, literally, if the oil market shifted from the dollar to the Euro. The invasion and occupation of Iraq was for the oil, secondarily, but primarily, to keep Sadam from trading in Euros. If bushco starts bombing Iran the second headline will be that the GPS system in the B2 failed and that is why the big bunker buster landed in an oil field instead of the nuclear bomb plant. "Sorry 'bout that , Sheik!"

October 29th, 2007 at 9:22 pmUS Soldier deaths are going down because the military isn't sending them out on the roads as much any more. They are now sending up planes to bomb the shit out of any site where they think a "terrorist" may be, to hell with the fact that there are innocent men women and children in the same place. Unfortunately, even though this general may have all the best intentions, what we have done in Iraq is extremely costly to the US and our war against terrorism. It is EXTREMELY counterproductive. It is destroying our Army, Marines, Reserves, National Guard, costing taxpayers $2 Trillion, and making us a hell of a lot less secure by opening up Iraq to our enemies---giving them a huge training ground and recruiting tool. Iran's influence has been greatly boosted. Also al Qaeda's. The entire Middle East has been destabilized.

By all measurements, the Iraqis were far far better off before our illegal invasion and occupation---water, sewage, healthcare, electricity, transport, infrastructure, etc., etc.
It is officially the #2 failed state in the world. One in eight children die before the age of five. One million have died violently. I would think the figure of 4.5 million refugees would tell you something.
When asked, the Iraqis say they were far better off before we came in and want us out ASAP. The majority agree with attacks on our troops. You probably would too if you put yourself in their shoes.
October 29th, 2007 at 9:36 pmTCDon,
My apologies to you. My sources have informed me that you have passed the bar exam. I misunderstood and I thought they said you had passed a bar. Judging (pun intended) from your staggering comments I would submit that you haven't passed very many bars. And that, my friend, is sarcasm!
October 29th, 2007 at 9:39 pmLawyer types don't have time to sit and comment on a blog, as much as a certain type who might claim to be a lawyer.
October 29th, 2007 at 9:40 pmSo RHF. Spell it out. Are you glad the General was injured?
Comment by TCDon — October 29, 2007 @ 9:37 pm
Who is more to blame for his injury: those who were in favor of the invasion and occupation or the progressives (like me and RHF) who were opposed to them?
October 29th, 2007 at 9:44 pmWhat kinds of drugs do you think RHF is on?
Comment by TCDon — October 29, 2007 @ 9:43 pm
Truth serum?
October 29th, 2007 at 9:45 pmSo TCDon. Spell it out. Are you glad the General was injured? Because this is the result of the invasion and occupation which you apparently wanted.
October 29th, 2007 at 9:48 pmNo, Keith, I am not glad that the General or any other American Soldier was injured. Can RHF say the same?
Comment by TCDon — October 29, 2007 @ 9:51 pm
This is sort of stupid don't you think. Are you suggesting their are individuals who do not value the lives of others?
October 29th, 2007 at 9:53 pmYou fish with poor bait!
Comment by TCDon — October 29, 2007 @ 9:51 pm
Why is it that pro-war people always ascribe bad motives to people who advocate peace?
October 29th, 2007 at 9:55 pmTCDon, you are the one who backed the illegal invasion and endless occupation into a region where there was peace and then are suprised when one of our soldiers gets injured.
October 29th, 2007 at 9:58 pmTCDon,
I have only had one glass of wine in the last ten years. If my glass and your two bottles were to meet an untimely end we would both be in trouble. What any one thinks about an injury or death of one of our military is of little or no consequence. What is important is why they were injured or killed in the first place. I will guarantee that if General Dorko and all the other casualties of American troops, killed and wounded, were in the living room of their houses in the CONUS at the time watching Chef Ramsey kill the cockroaches they would not have been a statistic of the Iraq oil war. The cockroaches, you included if you support this "war," commonly but not affectionately known as "bushco" are the entities guilty of assault and/or murder in the death or injury of our troops. That is not sarcasm, that is a non-refutable fact.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:07 pmThere was peace in Iraq in March 2003. Also reports that Saddam would have left with $1 billion and guarantee of security.
October 29th, 2007 at 10:07 pmTCDon, It is pronounced dbadass just like it is spelled. To be taken seriously, you might consider a smaller more discriminating brush
October 29th, 2007 at 10:08 pmSo far, there have been more than 4,694 planned projects, 4,112 completions and 582 started projects.
Comment by TCDon — October 29, 2007 @ 9:26 pm
So you're saying that almost 90% of the projects have been completed?
Hmmm. Is that why Baghdad has only two to three hours of electricity a day and it was reported that 60 to 80 percent of Iraqis don't have safe drinking water which caused a recent outbreak of CHOLERA? Maybe the Iraqis haven't heard the news. Don't you do any trolling in Iraq?
Like I said in a previous post: TCDon couldn't fool a grade school child!
October 29th, 2007 at 10:29 pmPoor guy. First his name is Dorko and now he gets hit with a bomb. :(
October 29th, 2007 at 11:19 pm>My sources have informed me that you have passed the bar exam.
hahahaha. man, i seriously doubt that. TamponDon has shown zero reasoning skills, merely rehashing old right wing talking points over and over, and citing sources like that "opinion journal" thing which admit his allegations about Berger taking originals are merely speculation at best.
October 30th, 2007 at 7:26 amif he'd passed the bar in just about any state he'd know trying to present a case where your evidence consists solely of speculation will get you absolutely nowhere..
#5 Did they mock him by wearing a purple heart band aid?
More seriously though I hope the general and all the troops who get injured recover with no side effects. In modern war this is a rare occurance for a general to be wounded. Does anyone know if there have been any other US generals wounded since WWII? I can only think of General Rose in WWII, beyond that I am drawing a blank.
October 30th, 2007 at 8:11 amYou can already see how the trolls operate. Maybe half the comments are now about them rather than the subject. That is their goal.
As to so-called "security firms", they used to be called "private military companies" which was bad enough.
Why are fascist mercenary thugs used to protect American troops, including a general? Presumably that is a military duty.
How many of the mercenaries in this firm are South African, Chilean, Serbian, etc. former torturers and murderers in their countries?
October 30th, 2007 at 9:03 amMan, the terrorists don't get it. Don't they know what happened to Moveon.org for simply questioning a general? You DO NOT go off and light off a bomb under a general's ass under any account. Sheesh.
October 30th, 2007 at 1:34 pm#6 "Lefty Patriot" ??????? There is no such thing as a left leaning 'patriot', it's a contradiction of terms!
By the way, "Lefty", I served 32 years. How many did you serve?
#4 "Jack the Ripper', right, that really tells it all!
