GOP candidates agree to CNN/YouTube debate.

CNN today announced that the eight major GOP presidential candidates have agreed to participate in its YouTube debate on Nov. 28. Earlier, Mitt Romney mocked the democratic nature of the forum, stating, “I think the presidency ought to be held at a higher level than having to answer questions from a snowman,” referring to a citizen dressed as a snowman who submitted a question about global warming in the July Democratic debate.

    There is a Sting lyric about politicians all seeming like game show
    hosts. The YouTube debate had a distinctly game show flavor to it.
    Not necessarily a bad thing, it seems about right given the state of
    our politics.

    I wholeheartedly concur with the Mitten. It is not fair to be able to ask questions if you are a minority. It is really not fair to ask questions at all. Questions imply no foreknowledge. What will happen hardly has anything to do with either a debate, or questions.
    It is a show. “shows” have dialogue, choreography, sets, and everyone knows how they end before they begin.

    1) Fox News has repeatedly made a practice of promoting conservative causes and discrediting progressive ones. No candidate is going to waste their time going into an environment where what they say is going to be spun like twine until it’s no longer recognizable.

    2) YouTube has yet to distiguish itself as a medium moderated and controlled by a person or group with a partisan agenda, as Fox News has.

    3) I deeply resent your equating cowardice with femininity. As a woman, I see that as an unfair stereotype. Think about the women in your life, both big and small. Are they weak? Are they cowardly? Do they run from challenges?

    Excerpts from Article 2:

    Hmmm. I wonder why Air America has been adding affiliates to their line-up recently? Could it be that they’re at their “young-un” stage, and still growing into their audience? (Naw, that would be a “fair and balanced” look at the situation, something right-whinres refuse to do!)

    Does anyone remember Rush Limbaugh’s first attempt at a TV talk show? His audience wasn’t as “screened” as his radio show, and he got bawled-out by a grandmother for being so insensitive and vituperate! After the very first commercial break, his audience was gone! He just couldn’t accept opinions other than his own! That’s about the ONLY thing that has never changed about Mr. Limbaugh! His screeners refuse to let liberals onto his show!

    Now Rush has been on his radio show for something likw 15 years. He’s had a very long time to get the sheeple to listen to him.

    It’s going to a while for these people to exercise their brain and stop saying “ditto” when Rush says “Speak!”

    For the same reason it takes two years to get disability paperwork through, or 2 years to get a copy of your DD-214, or even longer to get a fiche copy of your OMPF. Don’t get me started on how slow government paperwork is, I’ve been fighting this fight for the last 3 years, since I came home from Iraq with 60% disability.

    I do have an “intelligent You-Tube Republican question”, though.

    How are our troops in Iraq protecting the Iraqi people and preventing the genocide that many say will occur if we leave? For instance, if a group of soldiers witness a group of Iraqis attack another group of Iraqis, what is their response? The various militias of Iraq do not wear uniforms, and although they do wave flags, most US soldiers cannot read Arabic. So do we jump in and defend one group, or the other?

    Your question can only come from someone who has actual experience on the ground in Iraq. I hope somebody who will be asking the questions reads your post and uses it in the debate. It deserves to be asked.

    I read a great many posts from trolls and other conservative posters here. But I’m still unclear on what candidate they like for president. They spend a lot of time bashing Hillary Clinton (I guess they assume she’s getting the nomination because they don’t spend nearly as much energy on Obama, Edwards, or anyone else in the Dem field). But who do they hold up as an ideal GOP candidate?

    Giuliani? The guy whose entire message is “9/11″? And who wants to stay the course in Iraq?

    Romney? The guy who flipflopped on abortion and other social issues to pander to the GOP base? And who wants to stay the course in Iraq?

    Thompson? The guy who’s about as exciting as a bowl of oatmeal? And who wants to stay the course in Iraq?

    McCain? The guy who wants to send more troops to Iraq?

    Maybe I should tune in to the debate next month. Perhaps I will finally understand why the GOP is bound and determined to nominate somebody who’s on the opposite side of the issue Americans care about the most.

    There is a reason for that, it is a pretty weak field. This election is shaping up as another lesser of two evils fest.

    Of all the Rs, I probably like McCain the best. I feel like he is the most authentic of them all, but that isn’t saying much. I also cannot help but feel impressed by the courage and heroism he displayed as a POW.

    I agree with you about McCain’s Vietnam experience. He’s the only Republican who has any idea what torture really is, and while all the other candidates are competing to see who would be the toughest on prisoners, McCain is saying “torture doesn’t work, and it doesn’t speak well of what America stands for.” I think he’s also the only candidate who has a record of fighting the obscene costs of campaigns and how our current system favors special interest groups with tons of money.

    I just don’t agree with him on Iraq. And for me, that’s a deal-breaker.

    Michael, here are some intelligent questions for you. Do standardized tests actually contribute to the quality of the schools or do they force teachers to start teaching to the test? What do you say about schools having to water down subjects like science and social studies because of the pressure these tests generate? What are your solutions to fix the public schools instead of demonizing them like you conservatives always do?
