Michael, here are some intelligent questions for you. Do standardized tests actually contribute to the quality of the schools or do they force teachers to start teaching to the test? What do you say about schools having to water down subjects like science and social studies because of the pressure these tests generate? What are your solutions to fix the public schools instead of demonizing them like you conservatives always do?

McCain is a wreck. He makes a correct public statement that waterboarding is and always has been torture, but he can't bring himself to not support an AG nominee who will not call waterboarding torture. Straight talk???!!! Yeah, riiiiiggggghhht.

Can we all agree on something? Anyone who comes on to a liberal blog and begins with "I just read Ann Coulter's book and boy is it great!" is simply here to provoke and irritate. There's no need to engage someone like that. There's no cogent argument to refute or agree with. Just a brat trying to be annoying.

McCain has defended bush's torture policy too often to be considered anything but a deluded old man. His "srvic' consisted of dropping weapons of mass destruction on unsuspecting villagers who had done nothing to him, so perhaps this hero worship should be mitigated, especially in the face of his complete capitulation to the Bush/Rove filth they used to reduce McCain to a sobbing embarrassment.

Of all the Rs, I probably like McCain the best. I feel like he is the most authentic of them all, but that isn’t saying much. I also cannot help but feel impressed by the courage and heroism he displayed as a POW.

Comment by Keltoi — October 29, 2007 @ 5:09 pm

I agree with you about McCain's Vietnam experience. He's the only Republican who has any idea what torture really is, and while all the other candidates are competing to see who would be the toughest on prisoners, McCain is saying "torture doesn't work, and it doesn't speak well of what America stands for." I think he's also the only candidate who has a record of fighting the obscene costs of campaigns and how our current system favors special interest groups with tons of money.

I just don't agree with him on Iraq. And for me, that's a deal-breaker.

I read a great many posts from trolls and other conservative posters here. But I’m still unclear on what candidate they like for president.
Comment by missmolly — October 29, 2007 @ 4:30

There is a reason for that, it is a pretty weak field. This election is shaping up as another lesser of two evils fest.

As for me, I won't be able to watch the Republican debate.

I've scheduled a viewing of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney,1937) and I wouldn't miss it for the world.

<em>Maybe I should tune in to the debate next month. Perhaps I will finally understand why the GOP is bound and determined to nominate somebody who’s on the opposite side of the issue Americans care about the most.

You forgot Huckabee! He had a bounce! Statistically in a dead-heat with Rudy and Fred -- and this is from the Washington Times, so you know it must be true.

I read a great many posts from trolls and other conservative posters here. But I'm still unclear on what candidate they like for president. They spend a lot of time bashing Hillary Clinton (I guess they assume she's getting the nomination because they don't spend nearly as much energy on Obama, Edwards, or anyone else in the Dem field). But who do they hold up as an ideal GOP candidate?

Giuliani? The guy whose entire message is "9/11"? And who wants to stay the course in Iraq?

Romney? The guy who flipflopped on abortion and other social issues to pander to the GOP base? And who wants to stay the course in Iraq?

Thompson? The guy who's about as exciting as a bowl of oatmeal? And who wants to stay the course in Iraq?

McCain? The guy who wants to send more troops to Iraq?

You’re right missmolly. Still, some of us are just having some fun beating on michael the troll. A Republican debate sure isn’t that interesting now, is it?

You have a point. Playing with the trolls is usually more fun than discussing a Republican debate. And trying to keep them on topic -- ANY topic is like nailing jell-o to a tree. As soon as you rebut one point, they bring in another as a distraction.

Now I understand all the troll droppings in here.

Um … what’s the topic of this thread? Ann Coulter’s books? John Kerry’s discharge papers?

I do have an “intelligent You-Tube Republican question”, though.

How are our troops in Iraq protecting the Iraqi people and preventing the genocide that many say will occur if we leave? For instance, if a group of soldiers witness a group of Iraqis attack another group of Iraqis, what is their response? The various militias of Iraq do not wear uniforms, and although they do wave flags, most US soldiers cannot read Arabic. So do we jump in and defend one group, or the other?

Chris L, thank you for your service to this country.

Your question can only come from someone who has actual experience on the ground in Iraq. I hope somebody who will be asking the questions reads your post and uses it in the debate. It deserves to be asked.
