Bush: Congress ‘Wasted Time’ Trying To End Iraq War

Bush: Congress ‘Wasted Time’ Trying To End Iraq War»

This morning, President Bush met exclusively with Republican congressional leaders to discuss the SCHIP bill. Afterward, he held a press conference slamming the Democratic leadership for “not getting its work done” in Congress, stating that the Senate had “wasted valuable time” trying to end the war in Iraq:

BUSH: Congress is not getting its work done. Near — we’re near the end of the year and there really isn’t much to show for it.

The House of Representatives has wasted valuable time on a constant stream of investigations and the Senate has wasted valuable time on an endless series of failed votes to pull our troops out of Iraq. And yet there’s important work to be done on behalf of the American people.

Watch it:

Screenshot

According to Bush, the Senate has wasted time listening to the wishes of the American public. Sixty-eight percent of Americans want U.S. forces in Iraq reduced or withdrawn entirely, according to a September CBS poll. An October Washington Post/ABC poll also found that a majority of Americans “do not believe Congress has gone far enough in opposing the war.”

Congressional Democrats have faced stiff conservative opposition in their efforts to end the war. In May, Congress approved a bill stipulating troop withdrawals from Iraq — which Bush promptly vetoed. Two months later, Democrats pushed the issue in all-night Senate session, but Republicans again blocked the legislation.

The only person who has “wasted valuable time” is Bush, who continues to bury his head in the sand and back a failed policy in Iraq. As Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said in April, Congress’s actions have been “helpful in demonstrating to the Iraqis that American patience is limited.”

Digg it!

Democracy was such a nice idea. Bummer that it didn’t work out.

  2. Red Pill Says:

Bundle that remark–”wasted valuable time”–with S-CHIP efforts, accountability legislation, and Iraq withdrawal. Campaign spot time, Democrats!

  3. Max-1 Says:

    .

Top down government is a difficult illusion to maintain, but leave it to George.

America is a grass roots up style of Government, NOT a dictatorial style of reign.

    IMPEACH!

    .

  4. Peter C Says:

Nancy wasted her time trying to negotiate with these people. She’d have spent her time better by putting impeachment back on the table.

It makes no sense to bargain with people who will not bargain in good faith.

  5. StratRat Says:

I am sorry you didn’t get the dictatorship you wanted George. Maybe next time you are in Paraguay, you could sell them the idea. Who knows, they just might buy it.

  6. Menehune Says:

Bush is just jealous that Congress has a lower approval rating, so he’s making these s-chip vetoes and idiotic statements in order to catch up. He hopes to pass Congress and set the record with the previously unheard-of “zero percent” approval.

  7. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

Read: “We aren’t leaving Iraq as long as I’m “relevant” so move along and hand me something else that I can use to remain “revelant”.”

  8. Keith H. Says:

And in even more ridiculous news, check out rawstory’s link to the latest
zogby poll claiming 57% of Americans favor a military strike on Iran.

  9. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Of course it was a “waste of time”…since King Chimpy wouldn’t have allowed the will of the people to prevail in any event.

Funny how Chimpy characterizes the democratic process as a “waste of time”…given that he gained office without the bother of having to win an election, his position is understandable. Reprehensible…but understandable.

  10. Chris L Says:

    http://www.cnn.com/ 2007/ POLITICS/ 10/ 26/ poll.congress/ index.html?iref=newssearch

“Approval of congressional Democrats stands at 43 percent, twice that of Congress in general.”

And if they would actually take hard line steps against the GOP, that number would skyrocket.

  11. nanlichi Says:

I would like to see the subject of Bush and time as “How much time will Bush serve?”

Because although I think execution would be appropriate, it is just not civilized. Time spent behind bars contemplating how much he has fcked up this country would be better.

You of course , being such an unmitigated and smashing success as president for 7 years , have plenty of room to critique and criticize others on their job performance ………..What a stupid , delusional dick.

Not to worry. History will judge Bush a zero.

  14. po Says:

Rich, rich, rich. Blame the Dems if they give you what you want. Blame them if they don’t.

So, boys and girls, what is the lesson here? If you’re going to get blamed either way, get blamed for doing the right thing.

My thought, long held, no more $$$$$ until W and his cronies agree to:

    1. end the war;
    2. close GitMo;
    3. end the illegal NSA, CIA, FBI, et al spying programs;
    4. restore habeas;
    5. pass (or don’t even bother to pass, just let the old law spring back into existence) FISA legislation which both recognizes and complies with the 4th Amendment (remember that thing, it’s found in that quaint document called the Constitution);
    6. turn over documents to Congress in response to a plethora of valid and enforceable subpoenas

It’s really that simple, folks, especially if blame is coming regardless. He wants no progress, he ain’t seen nothing yet (but only if the Dems find their strength — hint, it lies where truth and righteousness lie, not behind the skirts of cowards, traitors and buffoons.

  15. Exley Says:

From The Washington Post poll linked to by ThinkProgress:

“A slim majority, 52 percent, think Bush’s plan for removing some troops by next summer is either the right pace for withdrawal (38 percent) or too hasty (12 percent would like a slower reduction, and 2 percent want no force reduction). Fewer people (43 percent) want a quicker exit.”

  16. MCMetal Says:

“Approval of congressional Democrats stands at 43 percent, twice that of Congress in general.”

    Comment by Chris L — October 30, 2007 @ 1:54 pm

The hell with that ; we need those that have their convictions and heart set on doing the right thing from the get-go.

Not try to glom onto things because it proves to be politically expedient and the poll numbers indicate that……….

  17. MeYeZone Says:

Hasn’t the House voted on the most bills of any Congress since 1978? I guess chimpy thinks actual work is a waste of time.

  18. Dumb_Fox Says:

BUSH: Congress is not getting its work done. Near — we’re near the end of the year and there really isn’t much to show for it.

Coming from the guy who’s got nothing but a pile of fcukups to show for his seven years in office, this is a tiny bit rich.

  19. po Says:

So what if the majority of Americans want us to stay in Iraq for a while. The majority of Americans would sell their soul for a McMansion, Mercedes and the perfect world. I’m willing to bet that more than 52 percent can’t even locate Iraq or Iran on a map of the world, name the current leaders of either country or explain why, in some detail or even coherently, Iran (or Iraq) is a threat to US interests in the region (which only appear to be selling the inhabitants weapons and buying their oil).

The war is wrong. A leader would recognize this. That the followers don’t is really quite immaterial.

  20. texaslady Says:

I had to watch Bush this morning lying his way blaming the Democrats for holding up business. With his best buds Blount and Boehner at his side. Think his pool of buds is drying up.

What a crock ! Anyone watching the last few months can see who is holding up business. As Pelosi stated after the crap Bush spewed, “40 days of Iraq would pay for SCHIP” .

The Republicans don’t want the middle class voters to think the Democrats can get something done for them. It is all about doing dirt instead of working for those who elected you !

William Kristol stated Republicans had to withhold the SCHIP program for that reason.

  21. missmolly Says:

If Bush is so upset that the House and Senate haven’t gotten much work done, I hope he said so in his meeting with the Republican congressional leaders. More bipartisanship and less obstructionism would go a long way to getting the machine humming.

Nah — he’s happy with the way the Repubs are clogging up the works. “If we can’t win, let’s make damn sure they lose.”

  22. Erroll Says:

It is as if Bush has received his talking points from the ghost of LBJ, who seems to be reminding Bush that victory, as Johnson said about Vietnam, was just around the corner and that anyone who disagrees with the government is giving aid and comfort to the enemy. The question now becomes will Congress and the media roll over for Bush or will we finally discover a multitude of David Halberstams among the media and George McGoverns and William J. Fullbrights willing to finally challenge this administration be demanding that U.S. troops no longer be used as cannon fodder for the lies that are continually handed out by this most corrupt and evil administration.

  23. oldtree Says:

do you think there is anything that would get our congress to rid our land of this?

  24. texaslady Says:

#14 I agree, what do the Democrats have to lose ? Why aren’t they charging up the hill, waving swords? I am really tired of them taking the high road, using intelligence with these lying pond scum. Time to play as dirty as the Republicans. If a few good Republicans go down, so be it. Can’t Pelosi and crowd hear us out here?

  25. texaslady Says:

Last week a committee was held to discuss the budget, no Republicans even showed up ! So who is being childish here.

  26. Hardy Haberman Says:

Bush is delusional again. It’s time to send him to an institution, like jail!

  27. Jackie Says:

Bush lost his base and his speech shows it. Now over the weekend Connie Rice has asked Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter to help with the Middle East problems. I laughed because some bad comments are often made about Bill and Jimmy but when the Bush Administration is at it’s lowest they call these two men. Many States are getting new registered voters and the majority are Independent or Democrats while Republicans are not happy with their party. Bush does have more to his legacy by lying to your face and blaming anyone else for his mistakes.
We gave a Bush contractor 27 million to repair a dam in Iraq but nothing was done and now Bush is looking for more money to give his friends. The money given for the training of Iraq soldiers was wasted and stolen. Yes today the Iraq soldier don’t have a station or supplies. Now we gave 127 billion dollars and there’s nothing to show for it. Even Senator Lieberman who most likely got some of that money says it would take 5 years to figure out what happen with no receipts for the auditors to review.

  31. ShamRockNRoll Says:

The Democratic Leadership had better step up!!!

You can’t expect to win in 2008 if you’re going to take this kind of crap lying down!

I would like to see the Dem leaders have their own press conference where they skewer the President for allowing more and more Americans to die every day in a far away desert, and vetoing healthcare for America’s children.

They should also initiate a PR blitz stating what they HAVE accomplished (even though it isn’t as much as many of us would like, it is still worth taking credit for) and asking Americans to join them in the continuing fight up to 2008 and beyond.

  32. Mugsy Says:

It was “a waste of time” when you already know what the result will be.

When a president can count on his own Party to reliably abdicate their oversight responsibilities and assure that they allow him to advance his agenda regardless, you don’t have a Democracy anymore. You have a kingdom.

  33. Nature Rules Says:

Bush is not being delusional as many think. He is continuing the tradition of Rove by making a statement with the idea to get people (namely neocon’s and 30 percenters) to repeat that statement thus bringing about their own reality. We all here know the facts which contradict his statement. They had the “do nothing” congress and now it’s the “can’t do anything” congress. How about all the time wasting on Terri Schivo? or Gay Marriage? Or many other unimportant issues that the republicans have beat with a stick over the last 7 years. The invasion and occupation of Iraq is VERY IMPORTANT. Child health care is VERY IMPORTANT. Habeas Corpus is VERY IMPORTANT. Would the democrats PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

  34. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Comment by toasterhead — October 30, 2007 @ 2:14 pm

Actually that bill has only been passed in the House…but the odds of it making it through the Senate are effectively 1, and obviously Chimpy will only be too happy to sign this latest assault on our civil liberties into law.

Check here for a rundown on just how much worse H.R. 1955 can make matters.

Worst pResident Ever, what a legacy.

  36. JMOHR Says:

Yes, where are the TV spot ads. They should be shouting from the roof tops that Bush is unwilling to take into account the cost of this war to the American people or the voice of the American people in wanting positive steps in retiring from Iraq. You can foresee the following ads to be played in each seriously contested Republican district:

    1. A graph with two columns showing the rising cost of the war and the number of US dead with the voice over stating: “The citizens of this democracy voted for a majority of Democrats to control the Senate and House in the last election. Over 70% of the citizens of this democracy believe that it is time to plan for a with drawl and start bringing the troops home. However, the Republican minority and President Bush believe that even considering this issue is a waste of time. It is time to change the make up of Congress and the President to reflect the will of the vast majority of citizens. Vote Democratic.

    2. A picture of a poor child. A graph showing the expanding cost of the war. A voice over saying: The President of the United States ran for the presidency claiming that he would expand the SCHIP program to millions of more children. How did he stand behind that promise? He vetoed an expansion of the SCHIP bill even though ___% of Americans believe that it should be expanded. Indeed, his suggested budget would actually reduce the number of children protected. Isn’t it time to elect a president and congress that will reflect the will of the people. Vote Democratic.

The frustration is palpable here and with the people in my area. We thought we sent a message loud and strong in 2006. But when even the demonstrations in 12 different cities only get 1 line why do we expect Pelosi to know we are with them.

Well how do you like that. Even a poll from a liberal newspaper puts those who want a hastier withrdawal in the minority.

Um… what alternate reality are you living in that makes you think that the Washington Post is a liberal newspaper? Their editorial board is incredibly hawkish. They haven’t been “liberal” (i.e. broad-minded investigative journalists) since their glory days during the Nixon years.

  46. texaslady Says:

#41 How about a poll of the actual people doing the work in Iraq every day for 14 months. And don’t even go there, that they chose to go, this was not what they signed up for.

How about a poll of the 27,000 wounded and 47,000 mentally wounded that will need medical and financial help for the rest of their lives.

How about a poll to see who will go if there is a draft, that would be the best of all to see who is wanting to slowly withdraw. Or even invade Iran.

  47. kasinca Says:

#43. I learned the facts in Junior High Civics. The point is not knocking the University…it is knocking the dumb sob who attended and didn’t learn shi*t. My acedemic background has nothing to do with the ignorance of the GOP.

  48. Zimzone Says:

    Waste of time, eh?

I’ll tell you what is a waste of time.

Seven years of Neoturds pissing away America’s most valuable resource; our children.

Seven years of Repukes obstructing every worthwhile bill presented while they’re in back rooms scheming to divert accountability and truth in our Justice & Executive branches.

Seven years of torturing under the guise of a ‘quaint’ Geneva convention ruling.

Seven years of lies, blame and instilling fear in our citizens.

Seven years of backdoor attempts to establish a ‘Unitary Executive’.

Seven years of posturing as ‘moral values party’ while fondling & raping kids.

Eight years of rigging elections, obstructing minority votes.

Eight years of planting obstructionist judges to further Neoturd causes.

    Had enough, America?

  49. John Kerry Says:

    So true!!

Let’s see! The left nut libs have tried everything (and I mean everything) to get at the evil George Bush! They tried Katrina; Bridge collapses; Cheny’s hunting trip; Iraq; WMD’s; etc etc etc. The only problem is that NOTHING has worked!

And now, a year later, the “Do Nothing Dem Congress” is pissing off its’ left nut base - the MOVEON; MEDIA MATTERS; DAILY KOS; THINK PROGRESS wackos. This Congress (the WORST in our lifetime) can do nothing. They have not passed anything they promised their left nut kooks they’d do. We’re still in Iraq. We still listen in on phone calls to protect our country. We still have prisons to protect our country. The Pelosi - Reid connection has done ABSOLUTELY NOTHING (oh sorry, I’m wrong! They did pass a Min wage bill!!). The evil George Bush is running rings around them and he’s a lame duck President. The Nov 2006 “referendum” was of course a joke and NOT a “referendum” at all.

It must be hell to be a left nut lib today!!

TCDon is once again proving just how stupid he is. A legacy admission to Yale and Harvard pulling C- grades is something that Don admires?!? The Washington Post is a liberal newspaper?!? But if you want to pretend there is something liberal about that, go ahead. You have some big surprises ahead of you.

Worst President ever, Don, and that’s a fact. Bush will crawl out of office a disgrace. He will be in for quite a shock when he realizes that no one is going to pay him squat to lecture anywhere, except maybe that freak show over at AEI. He will be lucky to get five minutes at the GOP convention next year. There will be no vindication for him. With each passing year history will judge him more harshly for his legacy of incompetence and failure. He will return to drink and live out his last days in darkness.

I think your first guess is correct. Homeschooled hermits don’t understand anything about school systems. And they don’t have any friends that bought their way into college. I had a friend who’s dad bought his way into veterinary school, University of Illinois, for $25,000 after he’d already been denied admission. Of course back in the early 70s $25,000 was still some real money.

There, I fixed it for him.

This is such BS and the people in our country know it. Congress has a legitimate right to try to stop the war because it is what the people they are elected by want them to do. Just because it isn’t what Bush wants them to do, doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do it. He’s like a little boy throwing a temper tantrum. Did he stomp his feet and wave his arms in the air?

  90. hellinabucket Says:

TCDon, Bush is the worst president in the history of the US. He hasn’t accounted for penny one on his wars of aggression. He is pushing us into WWIII, he has spoon fed the war profiteers with borrowed money the US taxpayers will have to pay back with interest. Bush took a surplus and flushed it down the drain. He didn’t veto a single spending bill for the 6 years republicans were in power which created the most bloated govt this country has ever seen.

Just because Bush and his cronies are good at hiding the truth doesn’t mean they can change the truth.

  91. cha cha cha Says:

so the pres. thinks bringing the american troops home from iraq is time wasted? guess he’s a bigger fan of an open-ended commitment to spending billions rebuilding a country other than his own.

Good point Mary. The argument isn’t a weak one. It’s an historical fact that the Gipper was illegally dealing behind a sitting president to sell arms to terrorists. The money from that came from drug sales to US citizens.

Reagan also cut and ran from Beruit.

Not a weak argument at all. Only weak minded followers of the Gipper and the offspring of his henchmen.

  102. hellinabucket Says:

A draft would bring the present and future conflicts into view of all americans. If these are truly the most dangerous times of our lives and the great evil has to be stopped at all costs then all americans should rise to the call and defend this great nation.

Republicans fear a draft because the national outcry for accountability would finally come to rest at the doorstep of those calling for this destruction.

The drums of war should not be tapped lightly like Bush has been doing. No major conflict has ever been settled without having troops on the ground. Not one. If Bush really wants to go after Iran he had better look long and hard on how he’s going to be successful. Especially since he’s royally f’ed up Iraq and Afghanistan.

He’s not the wise leader that is needed and he shouldn’t be rattling the saber of the USA without an understanding of what it takes to be successful. It makes me think he doesn’t care to actually win a war, he just likes the idea of being in one, or two, or……

  103. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    TCDon sez:

Do any of you progressives really believe that instituting a draft would be a good thing?

    Yes.

    Why?

Because it would force the reality of the situation into the collective face of the average American. Ignoring the problem would no longer be an option. Thus spurred to action, Americans would act, and we’d see protests, demonstrations, and civil disobedience on an unparalleled scale.

A draft would wake the American people up…and that’s precisely why we’ll never have one.

The ‘Mission’ is to derail every thread on TP. Don’t forget that, posters. Note the way he asks what appears to be a simple question, but never on topic. That’s the mission.

I know it’s difficult to not respond to such insults & inquiries, but when we all talk ‘around’ it, it loses capacity to disrupt. This is much like Congress, where a good idea is immediately rejected by the Troll Righties, who scream bloody murder that such an idea will derail ‘freedom & democracy’. Then, when they obstruct it, they actually get support for preventing such radical ideas to become law.

The Chimp talks about WWIII. Hell, he’s trying to start his 3rd War since taking office!

The Troll talks about ‘Dems & the Draft’, threatening to post our posts on other blogs to support his demented view of right & wrong.

We need a pact, folks. Something to agree on in general that it’s always more productive to discuss issues amongst ‘ourselves’ than to fall prey to false projections.

    HiB,

The Iran-Contra episode, which took place in Ronald Reagan’s second term, is an undeniable historical fact. No one dispute that. What is an unproven (and paranoid) delusion is the contention that a deal for arms sales to Iran took place between the Iranian government and the Reagan campaign in 1980.

  130. hellinabucket Says:

  132. Zimzone Says:

Comment by hellinabucket…;) , it is fun, isn’t it!

  133. hellinabucket Says:

The first meeting regarding arms-to-Iran occurred in July 1980 in Barcelona, Spain and not in Madrid as was initially reported. The Republican team met at the Hotel Princess Sofia and at the Pepsico International headquarters. The American team was led by Republican campaign director William Casey, who months later was to be named CIA chief by Reagan, and by Robert McFarlane, who later became National Security adviser under Reagan. Three months after Barcelona, a more important meeting took place in Paris. CIA agent Richard Brenneke testified that Bush was in Paris on Sunday, October 19, 1980 when he met with members of the Khomeini regime to consummate an arms package to Iran. Bush, along with Casey and other government officials, flew to Paris on a BAC 111 on Saturday evening, October 18. The plane arrived in Paris on Sunday morning October 19 at 8:40 a.m. European time.

While in Paris, the Republican team gave $40 million to the Iranian government as a gesture of good faith that the Reagan team was serious in dealing with the terrorist Khomeini government — and that the 52 American hostages should remain captive until after the November election. After the meeting, Bush had to quickly return to the United States in order to deliver a speech at the Washington Hilton Hotel. He departed France in an SR-71 reconnaissance plane, piloted by Gunther Russbacher. The plane was refueled by an Air Force tanker nearly 2,000 miles out of Paris. The entire return flight to the United States was less than two hours.

When news of the Paris meeting leaked out, the CIA moved quickly to cover-up Bush’s meeting. CIA agent Frank Snepp wrote an article in the Village Voice, stating that the SR-71 pilot, Gunther Russbacher, was not capable of flying an SR-71 and, therefore, his allegations were false. However, in an interview between government whistle-blower Rodney Stich and Russbacher, it was very clear that Russbacher had been trained in flying the SR-71.

Several other witnesses corroborated the story that Bush was present in Paris. Ari Ben-Menashea, a member of Israel’s Mossad and involved in the transfer of arms to Iran, stated that Bush was at the meeting. Also, Iranian Prime Minister Bani-sadr produced documents indicating that Bush was present. On the other hand, CIA agent Donald Gregg, who was on the flight to Paris, failed a polygraph test when asked about Bush’s presence.

You are clearly asserting that Reagan and the Reagan campaign were dealing with Iran while Jimmy Carter was president to sell Iran arms.

You are not citing a credible work.

As I said, the Iran-contra affair, which took place in Reagan’s second term, is a matter of undeniable fact. The allegation that Reagan and his campaign team initiated arms sales to Iran in 1980 behind President Carter’s back is fiction.

  140. WaltTheMan Says:

    Exley,
!980 was an election year. The arms deals came through in 1981 once Reagan took ofice. They were prearranged during the Carter administration, but by a political party, not the administration in power at the time. That’s Iran/Contra.

  141. Exley Says:

Walt, That is unproven (and not very credible) assertion….The fact that Reagan sold arms to Iran — however laudable the purpose may have been — was bad enough….You don’t have to try and gild the lily by claiming some outrageous conspiracy that it was all launched behind President Carter’s back during the election)

Don’t bother - it’s in the bag Shrub, you’re the worst.

Exley is correct that there is no proven evidence to show that Reagan dealt this prior to the election in 1980. It may never be proven. It is more than just uncredible assertion as Exley claims but I’m not going to quibble on that.

Reagan sold arms for hostages. He also cut and ran from Beruit. He’s not the great president that many think. He slept thru most of his presidency and allowed those who lurk in the shadows to run the govt. Thanks to him Cheney, Rumsfeld and others honed their craft.

Reagan did have Carter’s debate points come into his possesion prior to a debate. Call it what you want.

This congress has had more votes than any congress in the last 30 years. They still have a lot to do and have not stood firm enough against this administration but they have pushed for far more than the last 6 years.

    Exley,
Carter was an early victim of Swift Boating by Republicans. At that time, they used the hostages as their tool.

  147. Exley Says:

    Walt,

C’mon….Carter lost that election fair and square…Hostages in Iran. Russians in Afghanistan. Double-digit inflation. Skyrocketing inflation…There was no way Carter was going to win in 1980. For the life or me, I can never figure out why the Dems re-nominated him…It was political suicide….Reagan v. Ted Kennedy would have been a fascinating race.

  148. Exley Says:

    HiB,

Thanks for acknowledging there is no real proof of this alleged 1980 Iran arms deal conspiracy. As for the rest of what you say, hey, Reagan was not a perfect president. I don’t agree with a lot of the conclusions you draw from his missteps, but I appreciate the measured tone of our discussion (WalttheMan’s too)

Reagan was a senile old fart who made a nice figurehead. Too bad he didn’t choke on one of his effing jellybeans.

The Iran/Contra scandal investigation included the monkey business during the election, Exley.

Paris meetings with Iranians, William Casey, GHW Bush, Israel being the conduit for the weapons and parts shipped to Iran, before the election, the whole mess.

Like the Plame outing, they covered up, hindering prosecution.

You know we bought a nice brick home for the price of a car today during Carter’s time. We lived very nicely on one salary, fed and clothed 3 kids and even saved a chunk. When the trickle down Reagon theory began, somehow the trickle never ran down to us.

But you want to believe your leaders were good and true and did the best for the public but I lived it and it wasn’t the best for us and our friends. And the last 6 years have been devastating. GOP means party for the haves and have mores, as your latest leader so aptly quoted.

“communication is the key. I’m smart enough to know that I don’t know everything.”

Agreed…I had a ‘discussion’ with a poster (I think it was Chris L) on another the other day about the detainees in Guantanamo. He explained some things about which I was unaware. It was interesting. Such discussions are much more illuminating than the posting battles of “Nazi,’ “leftard,” “fascist,” and various forms of name-calling that so often dominate threads.
