It may be presumptius (sp?), but I'd rather hear the righteous and listen, than be ignorant.

"Also, could Think Progress possibly institute a format by which the responders and commenters who have their own separate discussions going on could have their own thread so that those of us who would like to discuss and/or read pertinent comments about the article could more easily skip them rather than scrolling though the copious back-and-forths of a few?"

An excellent suggestion!

If one reads the TIME article to which ThinkProgress linked, it is clear that the Democrats are playing mere politics with this issue. Here is what Mukasey said and then TIME's analysis:

'Mukasey said, "It is not constitutional for the United States to engage in torture in any form, be it waterboarding or anything else."

That is about as strong a statement as one is likely to get from a nominee under the circumstances and should have been enough to satisfy Democrats. But their goal is not simply to get Mukasey on the record with regard to waterboarding but publicly to corner Bush and the Administration...'

As the article indicates, Mukasey has given an answer that satisfies the Democrats' alleged concerns. But the Democrats are ignoring that in order to try and score political points. The Democrats couldn't care less about waterboarding.

What is particularly comical is the fact that Congress (which the Democrats control) can simply pass legislation that define waterboarding as torture and which prohibits any U.S. agency (military, intelligence, or civilian) from engaging in the practice.

They have chosen not to do so because they don't want to stop alleged acts of waterboarding. They want the issue.

A very interesting read on waterboarding by a US Navy survival insructor:

http://freedom4um.com/cgi-bin/readart.cgi?ArtNum=6500

Mukasey, however will most likely be confirmed. Chimpy has allready stated his intentions to only nominate douchebags who agree with him on torture.
Mukasey, at the VERY least seems to care a bit about the law. Maybe enough to investigate some of the malfeasance at the WH. THIS is the area on which he should be questioned. Waterboarding, as far as Bush nominies are concerned, is sadly a mute point.

Someone should ask him (Leahy?!) whether sending anthrax through the mail is torture. Another good way to get a group to say or do whatever you want...just sayin'.

Also, could Think Progress possibly institute a format by which the responders and commenters who have their own separate discussions going on could have their own thread so that those of us who would like to discuss and/or read pertinent comments about the article could more easily skip them rather than scrolling though the copious back-and-forths of a few? People also feel that no one will then take the time to read more recent postings that may deal specifically with the topic at hand. Not that they are not sometimes interesting and we could then go back to read them if we chose. Thanks.

Is everyone reporting keltoi at night, newsflash and exley for abuse? That is what the "Report Abuse" icon is for. Use it, please!

The troll dung on this thread is excessive. Without the trolls, this thread's posts could have been cut in half, and the progressives in here could have had a discussion about the actions that can be taken to compel Mukasey to stop using dissembling tactics and declare whether, in fact, waterboarding is torture.

I would like Leahy to call a halt to the Committee's proceedings and not consider Mukasey's nomination until he answers the question directly with no dissembling. I plan to call Sen. Leahy's office and ask that he do so.

Do any progressives have any other ideas of "things we can do" to help assure that this nominee does NOT make it to the floor of the Senate? (This is a question for progressives only any troll commenting on this post will be reported for abuse.

Given this administration's record of declaring an action is legal when it's highly suspect (warrantless wiretapping, anyone???), it doesn't matter if Mukasey decided to declare waterboarding illegal. Once confirmed, he'll continue allowing it to happen anyway.

Hey Zooie,

Just read Flags of Our Fathers. It struck a nreve with me. Having been to Normandy and Omaha Beaches, and having seen Saving Privat Ryan, I thought that I had a grip I had no idea about the designs of the Japanese in China and the Pacific. The entire meaning of the war changed for me. We live in a different world today; however, war is war.

Monday, I said goodbye to a friend who is off to Germany and who knows where after. He's a dot-com entrepreuner that is an unlikely candidate for action in Iraq . . . but there he goes. God bless him. For the first time, this war, which I oppose, hits home. I met his friends who have been to Afganastan, Bosnia and Iraq before, as well as a woman going to Qtar as a professor. These people are treading ground that I consider too treacherous to even consider and yet they go.

Please say a prayer.

Shayne,

Yes, I saw discussion....And the fact that you support John Edwards because you think he is cute is pretty pathetic. You have really forfeitted your right to have your political opinions to be taken seriously if you are basing your support on the fact you think a candidate is cute.

"This is not her site to change topics on."

Shayne,

Don't criticize Zooey just because you missed posting #126 and the debate. That failure is on you, not somebody else. Take responsibility for your own mistakes.

You must have missed Zooey’s posting at #126 in which discussion of tonight’s debate was initiated. Your reading skills seem as lacking as your memory. Now, if you have nothing to add because you failed to keep informed and watch the debate, please refrain from posting your irrelevancies. Thank you.

Of course you didn't notice that Zooey was directing that discussion to a linked site, not here nimrod. This is not her site to change topics on. What an ass.

As I said in posting #138, Sen. Clinton really stumbled when asked about Gov. Spitzer's unpopular proposal to give driver licenses to illegal immigrants...My analysis is echoed here:

Dems bring out fighting words -- Front-runner Hillary Clinton becomes the target as challengers blast her on licenses for the undocumented, war in Iraq and her candor.

PHILADELPHIA

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton stumbled Tuesday night near the end of a debate in which she seemed under constant attack, appearing to simultaneously oppose and support Gov. Eliot Spitzer's plan to give driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants.

Clinton, who defended herself for two hours against charges of political double-talk, did not offer a clear position when asked by MSNBC moderator Tim Russert if she backed the controversial plan.

"Do I think this is the best thing for any governor to do? No? ... But he's making an honest effort to do it," said Clinton, who accused Russert of asking a "gotcha" question at the Drexel University debate.

"If I didn't miss this, Sen. Clinton said about two different things in two minutes," said former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards. "Americans need a president who will be straight with them."

When Clinton reiterated her frequent claim that Republicans attack because they are obsessed with her, Edwards quipped, "They may actually run against you -- that's the reason they keep bringing you up."

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, who was less aggressive in his attacks on Clinton than many supporters anticipated, followed with, "I can't tell if she was for it or against it."

MCMetal,

If you do not want to be referred to as “Junior,” you need to stop acting as a child. Now, learn to express yourself with the proper decorum and then come back when you are ready to act like a adult. Run along now…

And BTW

By "act like an adult" do you mean the opposite of Chimpy's petulant , sad performance at his press conference today ?
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

And your sorry ass believes you're qualified to post about "mature behavior" ?

Pipe down little boy and go change your SpiderMan Underoos ; we promise we won't let anyone know you put another skid mark in them......

Heh! RHF’s idea of following the news is reading Wikipedia (which is where the bulk of posting 174 comes from)…So, RHF does not watch presidential debates or read newspapers or books, but he does Google and read Wikipedia entries and we are supposed to take his opinion seriously….Comical!

What's even funnier is you still support the worst president in US history in Chimpy , watch FAUX Comedy Channel and listen to Fat Bastard Limpballs , and try to present crap culled off of The Weakly Substandard , The American Sphincter , NewsCrap , SludgeReport and PowerLame as "fact" , and believe you possess credibility ........Your opinion isn't even worth used toilet paper , chucklehead.
