Every Neo-Convict going uses this argument actually there is nothing in common with Iran and the Germany of 1938.

Germany had arguably the strongest military in Europe and was aggressively acquiring territory Austria, Czechoslovakia, etc. Iran is at best a second rate power with no nuclear capability.

Are they going to attack the strongest nation militarily on earth? It would be suicide. For Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon would be bad but not the end of the world. Once again Podhoretz and the cabal of cretins running this country into the ground are on a quest of dead American soldiers and Iranian civilians to enrich the warprofiteers and neo-convict ideals.

If the Fraiddycrats I mean Democrats don’t stand these fools down, I am afraid that we will be drug into a Preventitive war again as bad or worse that Iraq, and thousands of American troops will die in vain and hundreds of thousand Iranian civilians will be slaughtered.

Both Zakaria and Podhoretz are wrong. The former is being naive and the latter does not offer useful support for his position whatsoever.

While a nuclear capable Iran will not attack the U.S. directly, there is a substantial likelyhood that it would attack us or someone else through a 3rd party terrorist organization.

Hezbollah is the clear and obvious example. From Wikipedia ... "Hezbollah first emerged during the Lebanese Civil War as a militia of Shia followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini, trained, organized and funded by a contingent of Iranian Revolutionary Guards.[8] Hezbollah's three main goals are to: Eradicate Western colonialism in Lebanon, bring to justice of those who committed atrocities during the war (specifically the Phalangists), and establish an Islamic government in Lebanon"

Now remember the dead marines in Beruit.

The source of a nuclear attack from Iran will be obvious to those in the know, but will be unprovable in the Western world and completely denied in the Islamic world. Hence, any retaliation will likely spark even more violence than we can imagine. Moreover, there also remains a high likelihood of a rogue element within Iran transferring bomb knowledge to a third party hostile to U.S. interests. Khan, the father of the Pakistan bomb, is a good example.

For these reasons, it is absolutely correct to say that Iran should not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.

What's more, these same arguments should and do apply to both North Korea and Pakistan. Currently, we have a favorable government in Pakistan, but we are only one coup away from disaster.

This is not to say that we should bomb and invade Iran, there are simply so many other options that we need to evaluate before considering to take that drastic step.

French historian Emmanuel Todd as I mentioned goes along with Zakaria,

http://www.zmag.org/content/showarticle.cfm?ItemID=11551

"Todd: Nuclear weapons are more frightening when they are unevenly distributed. Atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because the United States alone had them. But they were not used during the U.S.-Soviet Cold War. Only when India and Pakistan both possessed nuclear weapons did they sit down to negotiate peace. Only Israel has nuclear weapons in the Middle East, and China is the only nuclear power in East Asia, so if Iran and Japan come to possess them under certain conditions, the distribution would be more balanced and stable."

The President listens to him and will do everything he tells him to do. The President wants to be liked in the neocon world. He beieves he has a mission. They use the religious right to make him beleive that God wants him to do this. Kinda creepy huh?

I wonder...is it perhaps time to establish a reverse form of Godwin's Law for this sort of situation? After all, this is by no means the first time in the last six years that the neoconservatives have invoked World War II to justify their actions despite the fact that the situation we faced with regard to the Axis in WWII was very different on several points than that which we faced with regard to Iraq a few years ago and the one which we currently face with regard to Iran.

Perhaps we should call it Niwdog's Law (since that's Godwin spelled backwards)...?

Mans #1 instinct is survivial of self, followed closely by survival of family. Now, that may sound over simplified to you... but it's been that way since the beginning of man. It is not in the best interest of Iran to risk extinction of it's own people through the use of such weapons as nuclear on other countries... FIRST. I have no doubt in my mind that if attacked they would throw back everything they could including the kitchen sink in retaliation. Therefore, it is the responsibility of major power countries that have the ability to make a large hole in the Earth out of countries like Iran to understand that the possession of such weapons as nuclear comes with a heavy understanding that they cannot be used in an offensive manor for any reason lest their own extintion. Otherwords, just tell them you can have them if you really want to risk it, bud!

Comment by NeoTheta — October 30, 2007 @ 6:22 pm

His stance on Privatization makes me nervous. His antiwar and Constitutional ideas are good. Probably better than Hillary, but not by much.

keltoi said, "We can argue whether any of that is our problem and whether we have any right to stop Iran from going nuclear, but arguing that they are a democracy seems silly."

It is less silly than arguing that racist apartheid Israel is a "democracy".

The problem is that “smart people” rely on manipulation of “stupid people” to take, and maintain, control. This manipulation requires close association and, as the saying goes, “Familiarity breeds similarity”.

I have come to believe that “taking over” makes “smart” people “stupid”.

Boy does he have that ass backwards. Anyone supporting bombing Iran is supporting George "Hitler" Bush. So is it safe to call Pod"whore"etz Geobels?

As far as Hiroshima and Nagasaki go, no one who knows squat about history denies that using those weapons to end the war saved millions of American AND Japanese lives by avoiding a final defense of the home islands.

Roosevelt was going to drop them in Tokyo Harbor or in the Pacific as a warning. Crazies decided it was better to kill 200,000 innocents with no warning. Truman was a tool, just like Bush.

Now, Pod-Whore-Its is basically in need of some Gingko Biloba or Hydergine. This fart is so senile, it smells like mothballs even watching him on a computer screen.
