BREAKING: Karen Hughes resigns.

BREAKING: Karen Hughes resigns.

Karen Hughes, one of President Bush’s longest-serving advisers, is stepping down from her position at the State Department as Under Secretary of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Before taking the job at State, Hughes was a Counselor to the President and played an integral role in his 2000 campaign. MSNBC reports:

President Bush had asked Karen Hughes to go to the State Department and help sell America’s ideas about democracy and the war on terror around the world. Polls show that there has been no improvement in the way the world views the United States since Hughes took over. Now it appears she’s resigning.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/10/hughesresign4.320.240.flv]

Hughes is one of the last members of Bush’s inner circle from Texas to leave the administration.

UPDATE: The AP reports that Hughes plans to “return to Texas,” telling her staff that “improving the world’s view of the United States is a ‘long-term challenge’ that will outlast her.”

Digg It!

So they have all left? Seems very strange the “inner” circle has left this early.

  2. Zimzone says:

Hughes is one of the last members of Bush’s inner circle from Texas to leave the administration.

Is the ‘inner circle jerk’ coming to a close? Stay tuned for more resignations, investigations and incarcerations soon to come.

    Alberto! They’re coming for you.

  3. upside99 says:

So even Dubya’s favorite soccer mom can’t polish the BushCo turd and is bailing on him.

Too bad she will still be stuck with the sh!t stink on her cookie apron for the rest of her days on this earth.

    Good riddance!

  4. screech says:

I guess she finally tired of trying to polish turds. Not that she didn’t try.

  5. desaparecido says:

All jumpin ship. They know the insurgency is coming for them.

  6. celtic cynic says:

Oh Oh – Another failed adventure. Perhaps the people that deliver “the message” don’t believe “the message” anymore (or maybe they never did, and were only in it for the money).

  7. Marcus Aurelius says:

Ever since Bush disowned his biological parents, Hughes has been his surrogate mommy. Georgie’s behavioral problems will probably get worse as a result of her abandoning him. Poor lil’ fella’s an orphan.

  8. loretta says:

If you think about it, who in HELL would have accepted TAXPAYER MONEY in the form of a paycheck, claiming they could do the impossible?

  9. Zimzone says:

    #8,
What’s he going to do when LaLa leaves with Barney?

I don’t think Cheney is into hugging much and Condi; well, it’s those eyes. Nice for Halloween, but the rest of the year, not so much.

  10. cha cha cha says:

  11. A Patriot Acting says:

Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson once said of Hughes, “I’ve obviously been lied to a lot by campaign operatives, but the striking thing about the way she lied was she knew I knew she was lying, and she did it anyway. There is no word in English that captures that. It almost crosses over from bravado into mental illness.”

This speaks volumes coming from bowtie-boy.

  12. linda says:

whoever could have imagined that a diplomatic policy built on appeals to ‘moms’ and carried out by an ideologue with absolutely no diplomatic background or skills, would fail so spectacularly.

  13. upside99 says:

And she must have trained Dana “mini-me Couric” Perino, cause when you watch her lie, you also know shes knows that you know that she is lying. Which pretty much sums up the entire BushCo cabal.

  14. Candyce says:

She didn’t accomplish a thing during her tenure. A meaningless position held by a no-nothing who wasn’t up to the task, just like all the cronies.

  15. Zimzone says:

#14, linda, well said. Imagine that!

  16. hil_1 says:

#13 WOW that quote is from tucker?!
the bowtie must have been a little loose that day… allowing bloodflow to the brain… for once.

  17. upside99 says:

Maybe Hil will hire her, help get the Clinton spin going good. They seem to be about the same to me.

  18. sc mom says:

i guess she wasn’t doing her job, huh? world opinion of the US ain’t so good.

she probably didn’t want to respond to an open letter by Sidney Blumenthal
where he asked her to a screening of “Taxi to the Dark Side” ( An in-depth look at the torture practices of the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, focusing on an innocent taxi driver in Afghanistan who was tortured and killed in 2002 – where you can watch here). He didn’t mince words on what he thought of her job performance.

  19. tarazan says:

    K. Hughes has been doing this for few years…selling democracy..but when you look at the results worldwide, you wonder if taxpayers’ money spent on this got us a good return.

  20. spearNmagicHelmet says:

by stepping down she has immediately improved america’s image. not substantially mind you, but an improvement nonetheless.

until the next joker is announced…

I agree that everyone is jumping ship, and hopefully soon the ship will sink and take W and Darth with it.

Hughes: “improving the world’s view of the United States is a ‘long-term challenge’ that will outlast her.” – – Funny and sad, on so many levels.

  23. MapleStreet says:

I don’t know enough about Hughes to comment on her.

What I do know, on her behalf, is that selling the USA’s actions to the world is a job which seems impossible for anyone. To everything we say, the world has to answer:

Should I believe you or believe my lying eyes.

  24. Badmoodman says:

    BREAKING: Karen Hughes resigns.
    — But on the bright side, there’s now a spot in this administration that Barney can ably fill.

  25. Geekfather says:

I’m shocked that a seven foot tall woman with a Texas accent couldn’t convince Islamic states that we are alright!

Wow, a Bushie who tells the truth. So, Karen, exactly what did you do to improve the world’s view of the US? As far as I can tell the answer is zippo. The damage that Bush has done to this country will outlast several new presidents. Hopefully it isn’t permanent, but I am beginning to wonder if it isn’t.

  32. Guido OBGYN Lover says:

    Better luck next time!
Maybe they oughta lay off the whole Imperialism with a Gun thing…

  33. missmolly says:

Is she leaving for real this time? Or will this be like last time — hang out in Texas until Bush calls for her again?

  34. Badmoodman says:

Has Bebe Rebozo abandoned Bush yet? Oh, wait…

  35. Clumberfeet says:

My guess is that the State Department told her to do a public relations makeover of the gun for hire company Blackwater USA and her unabashed response was; Take this job and shove it.

  36. jb says:

Karen Hughes resigning. From what? Don’t you have to be doing something from which you resign?

good question. what did she do? and, more importantly, how much did she get paid for not doing it?

  38. missmolly says:

The AP reports that Hughes plans to “return to Texas,” telling her staff that “improving the world’s view of the United States is a ‘long-term challenge’ that will outlast her.”

This is going to be a common theme as we sift through the wreckage that was the Bush presidency. A few challenges that will outlast the Bush presidency (and a few presidencies after that):

    1) Improving the world’s view of the United States
    2) Cleaning up the mess in Iraq
    3) Cleaning up the mess in Afghanistan
    4) Restoring the checks and balances our founding fathers originally provided for in our constitution
    5) Rebuilding our military
    6) Restoring legislative bipartisanship
    7) Restoring FEMA and other agencies beset by cronyism
    8) Eliminating the budget deficit and reducing the national debt (you know, like Clinton had it)
    9) Restoring habeus corpus

    Etc. Etc.

No matter who the next president is, he/she will have some serious cleaning up to do.

  39. pbg says:

You know, If I were serious on trying to improve the face of America abroad (while in the process of smearing blood all over it), I would choose anybody but an inner circle loyalist to do it. A tame Democrat (Joe Lieberman! Wait, no, Jewish isn’t good) like Ken Salazar, or a conservative or neutral entertainer–Tom Selleck would be a great choice–to remind them that we still play good guys on TV.

This was something they found for Karen to do, not a task they thought needed to be done.

  40. Leftside Annie says:

Wonder what they’re going to indict her for…?

    /snark

  41. ralph the wonder llama says:

Wait a minute — Karen Hughes was the official responsible for improving the image of the United States in the Arab world, and there is no improvement in that image since she took over?

In Bush World, doesn’t that mean she’s due for a big promotion?

  42. crassus says:

  43. alphainfinityomega says:

    And a medal… don’t forget the medal!

Will there be cookies, and ice cream, at the ceremony?

  45. The Shadow says:

Now that Karen is gone, the only tramp left is Condi. Who’s he going to sneak around with now? She left before claiming that she wanted to go back to Texass and spend more time with her family, but that lasted about a week. He husband must have said he didn’t want used goods, so she went back to Dubya. Well this time I guess he has no choice but to take her back, or divorce her for cheating.

What’s so strange is she’s not even attractive at all, I wouldn’t want her even if she was the last women on earth. But our boy Dubya saw something in her, huh, I wonder what she does that so good? Maybe she’s his Monica, makes you really wonder doesn’t it? But when push comes to shove, a player got to have a Monica around just in case you need some SUPPORT.

  46. Jeannie See says:

The only thing that is going to approve our image to the world is for someone to but Pelosi a table and have her put the Constitution back on it.

  47. Jeannie See says:

    approve s/b improve. sorry.

  48. OxyCon says:

The AP reports that Hughes plans to “return to Texas,” telling her staff that “improving the world’s view of the United States is a ‘long-term challenge’ that will outlast her.”
    ====================

If Bush & Cheney would follow her lead and leave office now, the “world’s view of the United States” would improve greatly.
    Everyone knows it too.
The only thing that can screw that up is if another Repub steals the Presidency, because the current group of Repub front runners are a pathetic lot who are trying to outdo each other to see who is the biggest right wing retard.

  49. natisman says:

Maybe she will go back to Texas and work on her bare-foot water skiing!

Your posts consistently make me want to stand up and cheer, and this is one of those.

  51. ForTruth says:

Ha, ha, ha, ha. Karen Hughes did absolutely nothing for the last couple years since she has been back in the Bush admin, and now she’s leaving. What did our tax dollars go to her for?

  52. missmolly says:

Wait a minute — Karen Hughes was the official responsible for improving the image of the United States in the Arab world, and there is no improvement in that image since she took over?

Either that, or the Medal of Freedom. Or both.

  53. Buckie Boy says:

Our totally messed up reputation worldwide will never be repaired.

Thanks alot GW666 & Darth Dick.

  54. dumbstruck says:

Look for a Medal of Freedom presentation ceremony soon.

  55. Jackie says:

This is the second time Karen has resigned. She has done nothing but make things worse for the US. Acting like a dictator while visiting the Middle East and lying for the White House. Even the woman in the Middle East asked her to leave. Karen was just collecting a check for doing nothing. Someone should do an audit to see if the White House people who resigned are still on the pay roll.

  56. TPR says:

telling her staff that “improving the world’s view of the United States is a ‘long-term challenge’ that will outlast her.”

Hmm, I think there’s a word for what she’s describing… Oh, right, it’s call FAILURE.

  57. Doc Rock says:

Except for Scooter, President Cheney’s inner coven still largely there

  58. celtic cynic says:

One can only wonder to what nefarious purpose Karl Rove has called her back to Texas. Are they already rewriting all of Bush’s and Cheney’s speeches? Shredding documents? Getting ready for the $500,000,000.00 George W. Bush library? Getting the gold and euros and pesos ready for shipment? Testing the new kool-aid recipes? Getting ready for the rapture (or as George likes to call it the Grand Getaway)?

  59. kassandrasduplex says:

Hughes, a woman who looks like she could run a decathlon while sucking the blood from her own infants.

  60. VerbalKint says:

Hughes is right that improving America’s image abroad is a project that will outlast her, considering the enormous damage she personally has done to it.

This is the second time she has quit.

She left once before to “spend more time” with her family not to long after 9/11. She cut and ran in our time of greatest need.

Here she is again, quitting. What a loser. What a wimp. What a nightmare.

  63. Art says:

  64. austex says:

Another simpering sycophant down the drain.

The one thing she hasn’t gotten enough attention for
is her scrubing of Shrubs’ National Guard record at Camp
Mabrey (while Gov). If only someone could get to the
    microfiche under that mountain.

  65. Marie says:

    Good bye and good riddance.

Who’s left now? Bush’s circle of “advisors” is shrinking. Look for him to take more power on to himself to make up the shortage of yes-men.
