Karen Hughes Resigns With Legacy Of Unambitious, Misguided State Department Projects»

hughesmor.jpg Karen Hughes, one of President Bush’s longest-serving advisers, resigned today as Under Secretary of Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. According to the State Department’s website, Hughes’s role was to “marginalize the violent extremists” and “[f]oster a sense of common interests and common values between Americans and people of different countries.”

In remarks today, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice heaped praise upon Hughes and the “remarkable job” she’s done. “If I could put on one sheet all of the things that Karen has achieved, I would do so, but it would take me a quite long time to talk about her achievements,” said Rice.

But it’s actually unclear exactly what Hughes accomplished. As the AP notes:

Polls show no improvement in the world’s view of the U.S. since Hughes took over. A Pew Research Center survey earlier said the unpopular Iraq war is a persistent drag on the U.S. image and has helped push favorable opinion of the United States in Muslim Indonesia, for instance, from 75 percent in 2000 to 30 percent last year.

Some more highlights of her time at the State Department:

– In 2006, Hughes sent an internal memo called “Thinking ‘Bigger’” to National Security Council principals. Her recommendations for countering the insurgency though were “unambitious and disconnected from reality.” They included “reviving book publishing to support Iraq’s “hard-pressed intellectuals” and expanding a “Micro scholarship” program for “youth in key disadvantaged areas in Iraq.”

– In March 2006, then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld sharply criticized the diplomatic efforts of Rice and Hughes, stating, “If I were grading, I would say we probably deserve a D or a D-plus as a country as to how well we’re doing in the battle of ideas that’s taking place in the world today.”

– Arabs repeatedly criticized Hughes for her “lack of understanding of the region.” In 2005, for example, Hughes claimed that Saddam Hussein poisoned “hundreds of thousands” of his own citizens with “weapons of mass destruction.” Her comments came “just days after Saddam went on trial in Baghdad for the deaths of 148 people in a Shiite town in 1982.”

Rice also confirmed that Hughes will “continue to consult for us on a few projects.” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack today refused to promise that the White House would replace Hughes with a permanent Senate-confirmed nominee, but said that it is the administration’s “intent.”

While it’s so hard to say good bye, this may not be the end for Karen Hughes. After all, she also resigned in 2002, but then came back and joined the State Department in 2005.

UPDATE: The Seminal looks at the flight of Bush’s Texas inner circle.

This woman is a total incompetent who had no business in the position she was filling. She’s a Bush airhead, butt-wipe and nothing more. Another criminal repuke bites the dust! Don’t let the door hit you in your cellulitous a$$ on the way out of town, Karen.

  2. Veritas Says:

Wonder how much money Karen’s been able to stash away during her crime spree??

  3. Veritas Says:

Come on , condi - we dare you to show us just ONE, one, ONE single accomplishment of Karen Hughes - please….we double dog dare you!

  4. Badmoodman Says:

Hughes can’t do anything right. Doesn’t she know she’s supposed to wait until Friday afternoon to jump ship?

  5. Veritas Says:

I see on C & L, Kucinich appeared on Wolf’s show today and questioned Bush’s mental health. I believe it’s about time for physicians all across this country to begin weighing in on something which has been hused up far too long.

Just read Justin Frank, M.D.’s account of Bush’s mental problems in BUSH ON THE COUCH and it begins to explain his erratic, psychologically deranged behavior. His mental disorder has been escalating of late and it’s beginning to become obvious even to the medically and psychologically uninitiated.

  6. Buckie Boy Says:

But, but, Condi says there are pages and pages of success stories….yeah, well name one. We all know they were there to suckseed. Guess it was time to take the “pallets of cash” and run back to Texas.

This country needs to begin “beating the drum” for Bush to have a complete psychiatric workup before being permitted to serve another day in the highest office in this country.

…expanding a “Micro scholarship” program for “youth in key disadvantaged areas in Iraq.”

As long as it takes place outside of the US it’s OK for us to provide “socialistic” efforts? But to provide any to Americans on American soil? That’s just, uhm, uhm, UNAMERICAN! Let them eat cake! UGH!!

  9. Zimzone Says:

“If I could put on one sheet all of the things that Karen has achieved, I would do so, but it would take me a quite long time to talk about her achievements,” said Rice.

It takes you quite awhile to finish a simple sentence, Condi…no sheet!

Condi, if you’re ‘looking up to Hughes’, it indicates you’ve done even less than her. Congratulations, you deserve it.

  10. Veritas Says:

Buckie Boy - we’re on the same page I see. Buckets of cash and running as far away from Toxic George as she can. And, since Condi failed to enumerate just ONE simple, small accomplishment of airhead Hughes, I think it’s safe to assume that there have been absolutely none.

  11. Veritas Says:

Zimzone: I guess Condi’s showering accolades on Karen because she’s not accomplished anything during her reign either. What the heck has Condi accomplished?? Zilch. What has Hughes accomplished? Zilch. Both have been a supreme embarrassment to women because they permitted themselves to used as “tokens” in a patriarchial zenophobic empire. Shame on them.

  12. LividLib Says:

    “marginalize the violent extremists”?!?!

Uh Karen, why would you want to do that?
You were working for the violent extremists!

Good to see you, Veritas. I just had to post that again; well said.

    Comment by pete

Not so much their families. More like the mistresses and boy toys they have scattered around the various motels in Texas. It’s confusing for me: They go screw their botfriends after spending time with the husbands, then they all go to church and pray. The men go and screw other gay men, and declare their marriage is solemn and sanctioned by God himself.

Bush’s group is, by far, the most hypocritical crowd ever to breathe air. And then they all go to church and pray. It’s like they believe God can’t see them under the covers with the goat and the newsboy.

  18. pete Says:

    Hypocrisy? Perish the thought!

OT - Lets celebrate a lady who’s a real American hero, Sibel Edmonds.

FBI Whistleblower Sibel Edmonds ‘I Will Tell All, and Name Names’

Former FBI translator and whistleblower Sibel Edmonds has promised to tell us everything she knows about treason at the highest level of the US government - with one proviso:

“Here’s my promise to the American Public: If anyone of the major networks — ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, FOX — promise to air the entire segment, without editing, I promise to tell them everything that I know.”

Edmonds, “the most gagged person in the history of the United States of America,” has been trying to expose criminal activity, treason, at the highest levels of the US Government - Congress, Pentagon and State Dept - since she became aware of the crimes in 2001 and 2002.

Edmonds has exhausted every conceivable channel in the courts, Congress, and elsewhere, and is now willing to risk criminal charges to ensure that the American people learn how their government really ‘works.’

Legacy? Legacy of mulitiple failures in policy, effectivenss and end results because these people aren’t where they are to serve Americans! They’re where they are because they’re overly amibitious suck-ups who are unskilled and incompetent professional whores.

Yes RHF I was also namejacked. I think by Billy Hill. Have you been arguing with him too?

  38. JMOHR Says:

Karen was the perfect representation of Bush foreign policy. Appoint a person with no background, education or experience in foreign affairs. Assign that person to an important mission (turn around public opinion in the middle east.) Have that person rarely travel to the area. Have that person focus on form over substance.

  39. Jackie Says:

Karen got paid for doing nothing but she did make a fool of herself when the woman of the Middle East asked her to leave. Now she’ll be paid to continue to do nothing at the taxpayers expense. I wonder if Libby’s still on the White House pay roll. We are paying alot of salaries of people who have left their jobs. It’s good to be a friend of the criminal GOP. Now we don’t have money for Children’s Health Care but we do continue to pay salaries of those who left their jobs and of course Iraq/Afghanistan. Look forward to taxes going to up pay the bill for the money that the White House has spent. It’s a bill big and we can all thank Bush/Cheney for the debt.

  40. Shayne Says:

If Bush hired anybody who actually did their jobs he and his followers wouldn’t be able to prophesize about how government doesn’t work.

  41. Marie Says:

James Carville was just gushing with praise for her - what is with that guy? Is his wife, Mary Matalin, (asst to Cheney) the one calling all the shots in that family? He doesn’t seem to be able to think for himself any more.
Condi Rice sings her praises because the incompetent Sec’y of State found a kindred fish out of water in Hughes.
Karen Hughes - a Texas soccer mom who loves GWB - that’s the extent of her qualifications in foreign matters. After a brief retirement, she went back to Bush&Co as a person to have a positive effect on women in the middle East.
    What?!

  42. texaslady Says:

karen Hughes next mission will be to take over Bush’s library, to make certain the lies keep standing. She and Dan Bartlett did a great job on the makeover of his military service. Most National Guard’s had to do 6 years and still were not eligible for any VA benefits.

You don’t like community colleges? So, you don’t like the police officers, firefighters, nurses, tradesman, etc., etc., that serve your ungrateful, robotic slimy self? Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:13 pm

They sure do, but they aren’t usually arrogant little pr*cks like yourself!

In other words, ‘republicans hate facts’ hates education and public servants.
    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:13 pm

BAHAHA, ironic coming from a GOP hack!

republicans hate facts = MichaelIsRetarded = ValiantVenusfromuranus

Why are you running away from your past little fatso?

  76. republicans hate facts Says:

I’m pointing out that you’re a leftist hypocrit with a very narrow definition of tolerance. That doesn’t backfire on me, lefty. Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:15 pm

Sure it does, coming from the rightist definitions of ‘tolerance’ only means your ‘Xtian’ ‘values’!

The more you lefties preach “tolerance,” the more America ignores you.
Go the whole way, lefties, or shutup.
    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:15 pm

Sorry, but you don’t qualify for, speak for, or represent America or it’s values 24%er!

So please, GO AWAY, or STFU, since this is a PROGRESSIVE website, and you’re nothing but a fat stupid little troll!

  77. republicans hate facts Says:

Nahhh. I think we’re about done taking instructions from your “righties”, who preach murder.
I think you can just kiss our collective “assess”.
    Comment by BARTLEBEE — October 31, 2007 @ 7:28 pm

  78. republicans hate facts Says:

The poor little ‘tard doesn’t even know that JMU is a PUBLIC UNIVERSITY, while he WHINES and WHINES and WHINES about WELFARE, here he is, sucking off the TEET of MY TAXES!!!

    Little CRIMINAL HYPOCRITE!

  79. Lefty Patriot Says:

James Madison University is not a religious school, little girl.

    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:13 pm

It’s not even a real school. It’s a storage bin for morons, just look at the “student” here, for example.

  80. katy Says:

steve clemons on rachel maddow earlier commented that the one good thing he could think of, as far as any good karen hughes, and even karl rove, did, was keep dubby in some kind of line…

    ugh…

    that’s how i took what i think i heard… heh…

  81. bluestatedon Says:

Hughes is the perfect embodiment of the Bush Administration: the reliance on PR and Marketing (and incompetent PR and Marketing, needless to say) as the answer to all policy questions. Actual expertise and experience in a given field is dismissed as useless, if not dangerous.

What’s important, above all, is the ability to hold a microphone and gush mindless platitudes about George Bush and his $upporters, ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

Of course, all the PR and Marketing in the world can’t keep reality out forever, and Hughes has just reached the limit of her ability to spin horseshit into gold. I smell another book coming…

  82. republicans hate facts Says:

24% is G.W. Bush’s approval rating, who isn’t effective at fiscal conservatism. The poll is not a “who’s a republican, who’s a liberal” poll. Tell the difference, leftist scum robot. Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:34 pm

No, it’s WHO’S STILL STUPID enough to approve of anything GOP - that’s YOU SON!

    “STFU”
Sorry, lefty, but the likes of you make up no majority. Go back to planning with Mexico to take over the southwest. Also, thinkprogress doesn’t want you here. Scrat. Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:34 pm

BAHAHA, sure Aphrodite, Mr. Puss, whatever you say! Except for the fact that the MAJORITY of Americans agree with us and disagree with you on EVERY ISSUE! The Majority of Americans even trust the Democrats more for dealing with terrorism - YOU ARE SCREWED and too stupid to know it!

    So that’s STUPID!

  83. republicans hate facts Says:

Public education is different than bum welfare. I’m working towards putting tax dollars into the government. You’re just a professional victim who does none of that. Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

BAHAHA, you’re actually stupid enough to argue that YOUR WELFARE is better than SOMEONE ELSE’S WELFARE? Considering that MOST WELFARE goes to feeding and clothing children - this just proves you’re 100% stupid or one sick little puppy!

If you’re a full-fledged adult spewing here on a regular basis, I almost feel sorry for you.
    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:36 pm

Feel sorry for yourself, you’re the one that needs it fool!

  84. republicans hate facts Says:

  85. katy Says:

republicans hate facts… ah, that’s more like it…

however, i appears you and “newsflash” have hijacked this thread…

Having spewed that, leftist robot, you’ve only vindicated me. Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:57 pm

Having spewed that, rightist robot, you’ve only projected my vindication on you!

Why do you hate America’s poor children so much?

Don’t forget to have the government tuck you in tonight.. Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:57 pm

BAHAHA, says the little ‘tard living on the government dole!!!

All of responses tonight from you made, as usual, absolutely no sense, like any other night, so don’t trick yourself into believing anything to the contrary. Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:57 pm

Projection from the wingnut that delusionally believes his welfare is better than welfare for poor children!

Keep talking to yourself in caps.
    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 7:57 pm

Keep talking to YOURSELF IN LIES - welfare boy, that hates poor children!!!

The Syrian government is threatening to send Iraqi refugees back to Iraq.

    check out their story…

“During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry, and persecution.”
    James Madison

    James Madison

Boy that one describes Mr. Puss to a TEE!!!!

  91. barfly Says:

“We don’t obsess over the name of the school, either.”

    Comment by Newsflash

Doing that would only demonstrate how little you jerks understand history, or the Founding Fathers. Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot, than to speak and remove all doubt.

  92. republicans hate facts Says:

We’re a mostly white, conservative school. Gotta problem with that?
We don’t obsess over the name of the school, either.
    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 8:27 pm

So you ignore the legacy and history of the person it was named for, and act out in a disgrace to his name - yep, you’re GOP’s finest alright - welfare boy!

    TripMaster Monkey doesn’t like you.
    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 8:29 pm

And no one likes you fatboy!

Still waiting for you to explain why YOUR WELFARE is better than feeding and clothing an innocent child? No answer?

I didn’t think so you stupid fat loser!

  93. republicans hate facts Says:

Stop making fun of my school. Your being mean.
    Comment by Newsflash — October 31, 2007 @ 8:38 pm

BAHAHA, whiny little b!!tch, “You’re” being Brandy again michael!!!

You really are deranged Mr. Puss!

  94. Marie Says:

James Madison doesn’t get enough credit. He foresaw the threat that something like Bush&Co could do to a democracy.

  95. pete Says:

Hi all. I found a few minutes. It’s really me. Not a smelly troll.

While I don’t believe that Mr. Pus attends James Madison, or any other institute of learning, I would heartily recommend that all Americans today should read up on our 4th President. Much of the WikiQuote entry is prophetic. We sure could use a James Madison today.

Another good example of a Bush appointee, this one confirmed by default. Heckuvajob, Karen. Have nice time.

  98. pbg Says:

The thing that always fascinates me about these College Young Republican trolls is their hatred for ‘bum welfare.’ They have this thing about ‘MY Tax dollars’ and “EARNING my money.”
They’ve never lived off their earnings, let alone met a payroll, but they know all about virtue and vice, leeches and parasites.
I’ve worked for my folks, worked for large companies, worked for small companies, freelanced, run my own business and failed at starting up another–not necessarily in that order. And if I had gotten paid for every project I worked on I could retire.
About a half a dozen times I’ve been cheated out of middle-five-figure fees by that piece of corporate welfare, corporate bankruptcy. Work for a publisher, get the ‘what, you didn’t get the check?” story, go down to the offices and find padlocks on the doors. And the officers of the company get to keep their beachhouses and bank accounts. I’m out $75,000 out of which I was going to meet the aforementioned payroll, but can I get it from the wealth the officers pulled out of the company? Nope.

It’s made me hard as nails about getting paid–but, knowing how thin the ice is out there, I have never passed judgement on somebody getting welfare.

The fact of the matter is that an entry level job in most major cities won’t pay the rent on a studio apartment these days. And you’re just as likely to be let go in a ‘rightsizing’ as climb that corporate ladder. And go to work for a small startup and grow with the company? How can you do that if they don’t offer benefits?

If this were a country where working hard and improving yourself would guarantee you a decent life, then it might be different talking about ‘welfare bums.’ But if it ever was (may have been once, for white people) it certainly isn’t now.

But these little snots, still in love with the first 15 pages of their Econ 101 textbook and all of the Fountainhead, justsimply have no idea.

  99. Robt Says:

Karen Hughes is leaving the State Dept because she doesn’t want to serve in Iraq as a diplomat. Condi Rice has stated all State Dept personel will be subject to serve in Iraq.

And Karen Hughes leaves. Serving her country isn’t so fun when she might put her own lufe at risk for country. If she had to serve in Iraq…

  100. HipHopHustler Says:

I read this on GlobalGrind.com…..the Bush administration is dropping like flies and I can’t say I’m sad to see them go!
