One in eight: Number of veterans under the age of 65 who are uninsured, “a finding that contradicts the assumption many have that all vets qualify for free health care through the Department of Veterans Affairs.” Approximately 1.8 million veterans overall lack health coverage, a jump of 290,000 since 2000.
“Preliminary Veterans Affairs Department research obtained by The Associated Press reveals for the first time that there were at least 283 suicides among veterans who left the military between the start of the war in Afghanistan on Oct. 7, 2001 and the end of 2005.”
“Twenty-one states will run out of money for children’s health insurance in the coming year, and at least nine of those states will exhaust their allotments in March if Congress simply continues spending at current levels.” President Bush threatened to veto Congress’ SCHIP legislation yesterday.
Lawmakers have increasingly steered federal funds to “overtly religious organizations — many of which claim proselytizing or religious conversions as their primary function” — using earmarks. For instance, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) tried to earmark $100,000 for a creationist organization.
“In a shift of strategy that indicates an increasingly weakened political position, President Bush has included at least $2.51 billion for projects unrelated to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in his latest ‘emergency’ supplemental request.”
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates agreed yesterday that “all State Department security convoys in Iraq will now fall under military control.” The move is the latest effort “to bring Blackwater Worldwide and other armed contractors under tighter supervision.”
“Draft legislation that lifts immunity for foreign private security companies gained the consent of the Iraqi cabinet on Tuesday and was sent to Parliament for approval.” Under the approved version, security companies must have “all their weapons be licensed by the Iraqi Interior Ministry.”
Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair “turned down a last-minute offer from President George Bush for Britain to stay out of the Iraq war because he thought it would look ‘pathetic,’” according to a new book on Blair’s tenure.
And finally: “There’s a new birthday card on the market showing President Bush, white earphones in his ears, showing off a new IPod,” called the “I-Pres.” Among the selections on the playlist: ‘Iraq Around the Clock,’ ‘Knockin’ on Iran’s Door,’ ‘Oil Fields Forever,’ and ‘Cheney’s Got a Gun.’”
And in our debates we spend time mocking Dennis Kucinich for having seen a UFO once. Is it any wonder we have such a sorry state of leadership in this country?

So, what are you going to do, vote for a Republican? There are good candidates there and the best is Kucinich. Did they marginalize him again like they have at all the other debates?
It is time for us to scrap our two party system and the electoral college. Let’s have people run on their own merits and have a winner take all election where the top vote getter is President and the second is Vice President. Wouldn’t that be novel? Could end up with a President and vice President with different ideas who would have to work together.

I’ve had some positive views of Biden, but he seems very prone to “stupid attacks”. As for Hillary, at some level, unfortunately, politicians have to say the “right” things to different audience. On the other hand, in my opinion, Hillary also seems to understand the complexities and nuances of the world-wide political landscape and rather than give a Bush-like black-or-white assessment she tries to leave herself maneuvering room in that landscape.

If the Congress really wants to end this war, they have the perfect avenue to do it. Tell Bush that he will get no more “off the books” emergency appropriation money for Iraq. He has to put the money he wants on the budget with corresponding budget cuts to pay for it. That way the American public would really understand how much this fiasco is costing us. The second way they can end the fiasco is to refuse to pay for contractors. Take out 40% of the money Bush asks for since that is what the Contractors are costing us. Without Bush’s private army, he won’t be able to keep our soldiers in Iraq.

I agree and this is something the Founders wanted. They did NOT want political parties. Our system is becoming a lousy example of democracy. How about an instant runoff voting system? In that system the top vote getter actually always wins with a MAJORITY vote, not a simple plurality.

October 31st, 2007 at 9:58 amThe Democrats and Republicans in the Congress will ultimately pay for their greasy, scheming, backstabbing fleecing of the American people. Ya’ want Fascism? You don’t need to look beyond our borders. But Fascism is an inherently flawed political system in that it is unbalanced – as in there are no checks and balances. When something is unbalanced, it falls.
Thanks to the dickheads we have elected/appointed, we are heading for an economic crisis the likes of which the world has never known. When it happens, all bets are off. The extremely intricate house of cards we have built will fall, taking with it our political system, national identity, and any sense of the security we knew during the Pax Americana. The masses will, as they always do, take their revenge on those who precipitated the problems (and, as is usual, the masses will overdo it by a factor of 5 or more).
It’s gonnna’ make great history.

Canada’s government projected an C$11.6 billion budget surplus for the 2007-08 fiscal year on Tuesday and said it would pay down C$10 billion of the national debt.
In a fall fiscal update, Ottawa also projected there would be surpluses through to the 2012-13 fiscal year and said it expected the federal government’s debt-to-GDP ratio would fall below 25 percent by 2011-12, a full three years earlier than the original target.
Remember when your govt had a surplus. Clinton did it too! Wait, that’s actually applicable this time. Canada is also dropping their GST, personal & corporate taxes… all that with healthcare for all. Go figure.

It’s always been slim pickings. Any candidate with integrity is not the one with the money and political influence necessary to get the attention of the Media. And without media attention, a candidate has virtually no chance of being elected. Personally I would love to outlaw any form of campaigning other than the written word. No 30 second sound bites, no smear ads being run on TV 24/7. Just the written word published in a publication or mailed to the public. That would force people to actually think about who they want to vote for rather than going on name recognition.

Dem’s promised to open up the legislative process, yet all continues as before. If members of any local government organization attempted to operate in the manner utilized at the congressional level, they would be run out of office. It continues to remain unacceptable, in my opinion, for elected Federal representatives to govern by their rules in a fashion which eliminates transparency and accountability. The borrowed Federal dollars are not theirs to spend as they wish without public review and justification of purpose. If they want to give money away to their favorite religious, or even charity organization, let them use their personal funds, just like “normal” voters. Earmarks should be renamed, “personal slush fund to pay off selected supporters” and all openly displayed so voters can ask the hard questions necessary to hold them accountable.

You’re hilarious! I get it! You’re an over-the-top parody of “lefties”
October 31st, 2007 at 12:34 pmRHF has to be a joke, after that post!
Either he’s trying to make Libs look bad or he’s really that nutso (and that’s hard to believe)

As a frequent target of his deranged abuse, I have often thought that if I WERE going to be a troll – someone who was deliberately setting out to sabotage the TP agenda – I’d be like RHF, a mouth foaming, insult hurling child who thinks his is the only opinion that matters and everyone else is fair game for wild invective. I’ll admit, this morning he is in especially rare form.
What I really am is a moderate conservative who likes the debate I find here – I am always baffled when I am called a troll or people call for my comments to be flagged because I don’t agree with 100% of the TP agenda.

Too funny! I bet you can go on for days like this!
October 31st, 2007 at 12:44 pmKeltoi, there are people like that on here. Some are really touchy and see every criticism as an attack. But most are good, compassionate people. The other people just bark louder.
October 31st, 2007 at 12:48 pmzimzone, wayne – i’m guessing that your saluting stems from military service… i’ve never been there… it makes no sense to me for anyone who hasn’t been in the militay to salute…
the mention of gradeschool reminded that i attended a parachial school during that girlscout time… not sure which had the bigger influence on the “hand over heart” thing…
October 31st, 2007 at 1:26 pm…
someone commented way up top…
“I just read that a young boy accidentally started the southern CA blaze while playing with matches.”
Interesting how the corporate media (not fox that’s another story) was talking about how whoever lit the fires was very intelligent and informed about where and how to light fires.
Fox as we all know now spun the TERROR angle.
And did you watch the debates? My God.
I think it’s high time to protest in front of the Network TV stations.
And then there’s something else I have noticed an increase in lately. Cyber Warfare.
this is specifically (My Definition) attacks, exploits, mis representation of identity, trolls, bots, ddos, worms, virii, misinformation, and social engineering.
(did I miss some)
Basically anything electronic being used against the people and civil rights.
It pissed me off, when I saw my name being used to post some crap. But then with electronics how can you validate anything? Answer: you can’t. That’s why it’s bad to allow electronics to count the vote.
There’s other angles. but hey, this is my first post here.

Yeah, habit from the Army, also I was in the Boy Scouts for a couple years, heh
October 31st, 2007 at 1:42 pmAnd lets not forget about the VA database fiasco.
I got my lettter from the VA, were sorry your private information couldn’t be kept classified.
October 31st, 2007 at 1:51 pmAnyway, that’s old news.
There needs to be a complete cleanse of folks that deal with classified information in our government.
For example and oath to skull and bones vs. and oath of office
This is just nuts.
October 31st, 2007 at 1:54 pmThe skull and bones property should be torn down, and reverse engineered. The public should know EVERYTHING about them, or they should not be allowed to work in government.
This ain’t a religion. So it has no protection there.
It’s national security, just like COUNTING VOTES!
October 31st, 2007 at 1:55 pmI also don’t like that Philly Chese Debate.
Gravel was kept out by General Electric. GE, General friggin Electric.
Then look at Chris Dodd . COM at the TIME . JPG
Look who has been given the big mouth.
Screw this.
It’s time to HOLD the MEDIA accountable. PROTEST AT THE NETWORK TV STATIONS. Forget Washington DC!!!!!!!!!!
October 31st, 2007 at 2:00 pm#79
Barfly,
Regardless, it was still pretty clever.
October 31st, 2007 at 2:01 pmAre we supposed to salute General Electric?
Did General Electric swear an oath of office?
Is General Electric a god damn human being?
I still think Tim Russert sucks
October 31st, 2007 at 2:22 pm“It doesn’t matter, because I’M an ally. Native Americans AND Mexico will BOTH be receiving their land — ALL of it — when the time comes, and they’ll reward ME for being part of the movement while penalizing YOU for being protectionist!
Keep PRETENDING to be progressive. YOU ARE NOT DOING YOURSELF ANY FAVORS, REPUG!”
Comment by republicans hate facts
I’m a Repug, and you’re an intellectual hack. Boy, when you go over the top, you really go whole hog. Did you receive some missive from this imaginary group, telling you how you’d be rewarded? Talk about delusional…
October 31st, 2007 at 3:29 pmComment by republicans hate facts
My apologies. Perhaps we should devise some secret virtual handshake?
October 31st, 2007 at 8:45 pmThe reality of the matter is that
when you say,
“Native Americans AND Mexico will BOTH be receiving their land — ALL of it — when the time comes”
It pisses people off.
And you know what, I have M friends and NA friends and they agree. Although I might be the exception to the rule since I am loved as family. And frankly I don’t want to piss you off. But think. The United States uses PROPERTY. treats things as property. the land can no longer be sacred under that duress.
and folks can argue all they want.
The problem with this discussion is that you have changed the topic from VETERANS who have no health care (like I don’t) to a question of who owns the USA.
The PEOPLE OWN USA. And The People own the government. And there are less people in the government than folks like us. So THEY better watch out. Time is on OUR side.
Now you want to argue about MEXICO and Native Americans OWNING us?
I’ll go there. You probably right. They probably DO own us. But you better wake up to what I just said or it’s all hell broken loose and nobody will win.
And before you totally tweak out. I speak some Spanish, and I been to Tikal, Guatamala, Costa Rica and SEEN what’s up. I seen it back in 1974! Since that’s when I went. http://www.sacxtra.com/tikal/ love me hate me.
It’s WHO I AM, and WHEN I WENT.
Now I am just a soul with the knowledge of Pagan’s and Wiccan’s and Humanism’s and Golden Dawn and very angry at the crap I see.
November 1st, 2007 at 6:24 amOh yeah that is a dirt runway, ever been on a dirt runway?
November 1st, 2007 at 6:28 amCockpit doors? heh, I could spill my coca-cola on the pilot by accident!
Parachutes? What in the Trees of the Jungle?
Guess what, the NEXT DAY, the plane crashed on that runway.
I was almost on it. We Almost stayed another day.
Life is precious. It’s time to realize that.
November 1st, 2007 at 6:33 amoh yeah everyone died.
Look it up in whatever Guatemala’s newspaper was back in 1974.
Go ahead. Look it up.
November 1st, 2007 at 6:34 amit was around Christmas.
Cause I celebrated that in the Market place of Antigua.
November 1st, 2007 at 6:38 amI remember that WHITES were not allowed on the Church Steps as Drunks lit off hella fireworks out of their bare hands.
November 1st, 2007 at 6:43 amI don’t disagree that M’s and NA’s own the USA.
But that sure don’t solve the problem of the lack of health care. ( NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH INSURANCE)
November 1st, 2007 at 6:45 amYou got something else to tell me?
November 1st, 2007 at 6:46 amTake millions of dollars away from the network TV.
and the Federal reserve, and put it on HEALTH CARE.
END THIS CRAP WAR.
