The Hill Irresponsibly Reports False Claim That Clinton ‘Skipped’ Senate Environmental Hearing
Yesterday, the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee held a hearing on the controversial proposal to establish a nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. When this hearing was announced on Oct. 17, Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) commended the move, stating, “I applaud Chairman Boxer for scheduling this important hearing, a step that I called for earlier this year.”
Yet today in The Hill in a piece entitled “Clinton Skips Senate Hearing She Called For,” reporter Alexander Bolton claims that Clinton failed to show up for yesterday’s hearing. Bolton writes:
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) skipped an Environment and Public Works Committee hearing Wednesday that she called for earlier this year.
Clinton’s absence drew a strong rebuke from Sen. James Inhofe (Okla.), ranking Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee. [...]
But if Clinton was seeking answers from administration officials, she was not doing it from the committee dais. She was nowhere to be seen at Wednesday’s hearing.
Bolton’s article is completely inaccurate. Clinton was at the hearing. In fact, the AP’s Erica Werner yesterday reported on Clinton’s comments: “‘Yucca Mountain is not the answer,’ Clinton told a packed hearing of the Environment and Public Works Committee held at her request.”
Additionally, a transcript of Clinton’s remarks — including questions to the witnesses — are available on the senator’s website, as is video evidence of her presence at the hearing. Watch it:
Freepers swiftly posted Bolton’s article and attacked Clinton. For example, user LdSentinal wrote, “She was for it before she couldn’t be bothered with it.”

UPDATE: In the article, Bolton also quotes Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) as criticizing Clinton for “being absent from the last two [Environment and Public Works] hearings on Yucca Mountain.” But according to Inhofe’s office, that quote is from July 24, 2007 press release and therefore not in reference to the hearing yesterday.

It would be probable that Inhofe and Clinton weren’t at the table at the same time. And due to Mr. Inhofe’s strange perception of the world, if she wasn’t there when HE was, she wasn’t there at all. He’ll NEVER accept the implications of global warming until he’s standing on an iceberg that is melting.
