It seems Hugo Chavez himself was first to imagine himself ruler of Peru. Last year, he tried to influence the outcome of Peru’s presidential election. He even threatened to cut off relations with Peru if it didn’t accept his choice, but the Peruvians told him to drop dead.

The people of Peru <em>do</em> deserve better than Chavez.

Mr. Cheney, I find nothing that you say laughable. You are a clown, your words are not.

CHENEY: I’m trying to think how to state this diplomatically.

[ Well dude, good sign you're thinking . . . somehow I doubt that what you consider thought registers on my thought Richter Scale.]

You thinking "diplomacy?" well that should register a 10, but it just ain't so. Your thoughts on dipolmacy are non-existent. You probably exercised a little when you were told that your daughter's gay and had a childHonorably, you said that you support your daughter, but we have yet to see a photo of your daughter's family . . . a gay beacon.

What we'd really like to see is you in your true colors. .. . handcuffed for DUI, a Civil war flying in your background and you being served a little shot of Rumplemintz by a guy in a turban.

Yes, Cheney, let your freak flag fly. World Trade Center blazineg in the background while Blackwater's Prince shining your shoes as you prep for a funeral at Arlington cemetery. . . .no flag folding because . . . well, that would just be wrong.

Diplomacy is hard sometimes.

(LAUGHTER)

We have refrained from making public pronouncements about Mr. Chavez — I think, for good and legitimate reasons. He’s a — obviously, an individual with his own agenda. And he spends a great deal of his time worrying about us and criticizing the United States.

My own personal view is that he does not represent the future of Latin America. And the people of Peru (sic), I think, deserve better in their leadership. But that’s obviously a matter they’ve got to resolve for themselves.

Maybe he did mean that Peru deserves better leadership than Venezuela does. The introduction of some kind of competition between Latin American countries, as to which one deserves the better leadership may be a new tactic to drive a wedge between two countries Cheney feels may form some kind of anti-US coalition, at some point.

Doncha see? -- JudyInNM

No, I'm afraid that I don't. While I grant you that Cheney is more than a little Machiavellian, let's face it -- he's not typically known for displaying the kind of delicate subtlety that you describe. Far from it, in fact -- he's much more of a sledgehammer than he is a scalpel...

<em>MODERATOR: Our attention is focused on Iraq, Iran and the wider Middle East. However, much of the world is watching closely Hugo Chavez <strong>of Venezuela</strong>. How concerned are you about his influence?</em>

******************************

Good grief...and people wonder why America's reputation is on the wane in other parts of the world?!? Our Vice President -- the country's second-in-command -- couldn't get the information right even though the moderator <em>prompted</em> him...

Still...an odd thought crossed my mind when I first read this earlier today. I found myself uncannily reminded of Ronald Reagan and how some people have suggested that he may have been showing incipient signs of Alzheimer's Disease as early as his second term in the White House. Wonder if that could possibly be happening to Tricky-Ticker Dick...

No, no, no! It was a joke!

"The People of Peru deserve better--however, the people of Venezuela don't, which is why Chavez is Perfect for the place!"
He just has a problem with his delivery!
And remembering the punchline..

Perhaps Cheney has Peru on mind. Wonder why? Perhaps this may be a reason:

U.S. military base in Peru?

© U.S. Air Force
(LIP-jl) -- Since 1999, United States military counter-narcotics and surveillance operations pertaining to the dubbed Plan Colombia have been based out of Manta, Ecuador - Ecuador's fifth largest city located in Manabi Province.

It now appears that the U.S. will have to look for a new home since Ecuadorian President, and Hugo Chavez ally, Rafael Correa has recently stated he will not renew the contract that keeps the U.S. there until 2009.

According to Argentina's Pagina/12 newspaper, the current U.S. Manta base may make a move to Peru.

You would think Cheney would at least keep his CIA-staged coups correct. Peru was the success. Venezuela was the failure. C'mon, Man Safe - get it straight!

And Bush not only called Africa a nation, but when he met the Prime Minister of Spain in 2001, he called him "Mr. Goose".

According to a Wikipedia entry on major Presidential gaffes:

June 11, 2001 — Bush appeared on Spanish television and said "It is a great honor to travel to Spain and visit the King and also Prime Minister Anzar. But I have to practice the very pretty language, and unless I practice I am going to destroy this language". He had in fact mispronounced the name of the Prime Minister, José María Aznar. He called him ansar, a Spanish word for "goose". (Daily Telegraph)

What is so hilarious about this is the fact the moderator clearly states: "However, much of the world is watching closely <strong>Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.</strong>"

And Cheney still gets it wrong.

He must have been looking at Bush's playdough map of the world before he left Washington for the speech.

"Wow! Brazil is big!" --- GW Bush
