Bolton: Defining torture is ‘torture.’

In an interview on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show yesterday, former UN Ambassador John Bolton complained about the tone of “battles that are going on in Washington” now. As an example, he cited the opposition to Michael Mukasey, who refused to call waterboarding torture. Apparently lacking irony, Bolton then described the confirmation process for Mukasey as a “kind of torture“:

bolton44444.jpg Well, I hope not, because I think one of the consequences of the battles that are going on in Washington now over, for example, the confirmation of Judge Mukasey as the new Attorney General, which I think is now likely to go through, is that people will say I’m not going to serve in the government. I’m not going to put myself and my family through this kind of torture, which is designed to pick people apart and not disagree with them on policy, but just find ways of preventing their nomination from being confirmed.

Offtopic (because for some odd reason, TP hasn’t seen fit to mention it…)

Kucinich has introduced a resolution to impeach Cheney. The House is currently voting on a motion brought forth by Steny Hoyer to table the resolution. Vote currently stands at: 170 ‘yea’ (table (kill) the resolution), to 242 ‘nay’ (let the resolution proceed to the floor).

  2. Zappatero says:

Bolton is a professional interviewee at this point. And watch out, he’s on the BBC constantly defining our nation for the world.

  3. Leftside Annie says:

What a colossal warmongering, traitorous IDIOT he is!

  4. missmolly says:

Bolton has the same problem defining “torture” as Giuliani has — only Giuliani thinks that term applies to campaigning for president.

Maybe we need to waterboard them BOTH until they can see the difference between real torture and just living by the political sword.

  5. oldtree says:

would someone from our justice department please explain why this man isn’t under committed medical care in a facility that can deal with those likely to be a danger to others?

  6. wijg says:

I’ll tell you what, ask the Mukasey family which type of torture they would prefer. Waterboarding or intense questioning? Hmmm… what a dilemma.

So, Repubs want to debate it, an odd political ploy. What is your take on that tactic, Trip?

  8. Badmoodman says:

And to think that Tommy Franks called Dougie Feith “the dumbest f8ck on the planet.” Does Franks know Bolton?

    These guys are jaw-dropping nasty/stupid.

It’s like some right-wing dingbat complaining that foul language is as bad as blowing the living sh*t out of someone.

And now, simply pushing a potential AG for definitive answers as as bad as physical torture. Orwell would be speechless at this point.

I’m guessing that by keeping it on the floor they can put the moderate democrats on the spot. They can also introduce their attachments to it. I forget what it was but they have prepared something and wouldn’t be able to attach it if the bill goes to committee (and death) like Hoyer wants.

The talk of impeachment puts the dem leaders in a bad spot. They had it “off the table” and now they would have to be on record for or against it.

  12. fletc3her says:

Filling someone’s mouth and nose with water until they go unconscious – torture. Keeping prisoners awake for days, standing, using cold water, music, and bright lights – torture. Shoving someone in a sleeping bag and beating them to death with hammers – torture. Stripping prisoners naked, stacking them, urinating on them, and attacking them with dogs – torture. Asking questions at a Congressional hearing – not torture.

Anyone who has tortured in the name of America, and those who ordered that torture, must be held accountable for their crimes against humanity. There is no statute of limitation on grotesque crimes like these.

  13. judyinnm says:

So, being for or against torture is not a “policy issue”? What the Bloody Hell is it??

  14. Squegeeboo says:

I thought Bolton said ‘Free Mustache rides are torture.’ Must have been a mis-quote.

Maybe if appropriate candidates were put forth, instead of political cronies, the process would go as smooth as silk.

OT – Kucinich’s resolution HAS PASSED! The vote to impeach Cheney will CONTINUE!!! Oddly, he had MAJORITY Republican support. Obviously the Republicans want this debate for a tactical reason. We have to MAKE THEM PAY for that decision. We have to make it BACKFIRE. Kucinich is a NATIONAL HERO. More courage in his small stature then the Democratic leadership combined.

Now we must ABSOLUTELY BURY our Reps. in Phone calls & email and DEMAND Dick Cheney be impeached. Round 1 goes to the Democratic Presidential candidate without fear, Dennis Kucinich!!

PS…TP, get up to speed, this is THE story and you’re behind the curve!

Let’s hope they choose to do the right thing. A District Attorney has to decide to prosecute a suspect if law enforcement has arrested said suspect with evidence he committed a crime — or not prosecute, if he feels the evidence is insufficient. Either way, he has to make a decision.

Our congressmen and women are now in that same position. They can choose to pursue the course of impeachment, examining all evidence, or if they just quietly cave and let it go — effectively rendering Cheney immune for the balance of his term.

Let’s hope they do what’s right for the country.

Because it gives validity to Kucinich. None of the “big blogs” think he can win.

I think it is a mis-quote. It would have been any female foolish enough to take him up on the offer who would consider the procedure “torture”.

  27. ralph the wonder llama says:

Apparently??? OF COURSE Bolton is lacking irony. Tighty-righties typically suffer from an “irony deficiency”.

  28. Spudge Boy says:

The good thing is that now we get a “real vote” as opposed to a procedural block. Now we’ll see where people really stand.

    Comment by TCDon — November 6, 2007 @ 4:29 pm

The people aren’t voting numb nutz. These are representatives that haven’t been doing a real good job of representing lately, so no you won’t see where “the people” really stand. You will see where a bunch of representatives stand.

Also, you won’t get a real vote. It is going to the Judiciary Committee.

Catch up before you shove your foot in your mouth.

  30. Badmoodman says:

Just curious, but why is the vote to impeach Cheney but not Bush?

  31. missmolly says:

Update at 4:25 p.m. ET: The vote to decide to vote (yes, you read that right) just ended. By a 218-194 margin, the House has to vote on whether to send the resolution to the Judiciary Committee. That’s happening right now.

    Comment by TCDon — November 6, 2007 @ 4:27 pm

Is it just me, or is legislative procedure particularly excruciating? A vote to decide to vote is as bad as a meeting to plan a meeting.

No matter. Eventually, after all of this procedure, our elected officials are going to have to sh!t or get off the pot.

38 – from what I understand on that question: if they successfully impeach Bush, then CHENEY is POTUS.

    Yikes.

    Comment by Theresa — November 6, 2007 @ 4:30 pm

Wow. This is some serious inside baseball. What have the Repbubs got up their sleeve? This is obviously some twisted chess move, but I can’t figure the angle…..do they think debating the issue will make the Democrats look foolish?

I can’t wait for the next Dem debate to hear Kucinich crow about this.

  36. Spudge Boy says:

Impeaching Bush first makes Cheney president. AT that point, knowing that he would be next, Cheney would declare martial law and bomb Iran in one fell swoop.

  37. 2MillionLightYearsToAndromeda says:

Now they’ll all have to VOTE, on the record, whether or not they’ll defend and uphold the Constitution. Conyers, Pelosi and Hoyer are unAmerican cowards. They don’t care that Cheney lied the country into war. They don’t want to reveal that they don’t care about the Constitution. Now they’ll have to put their cards on the table. Do they support fascist warmonger 9% treasonous Cheney? Or do they support the Constitution? I bet they’re all wetting their pants.

  38. missmolly says:

Just curious, but why is the vote to impeach Cheney but not Bush?

    Comment by Badmoodman — November 6, 2007 @ 4:36 pm

Very simple. Cheney is the one with the power, and he’s the one who’s driving the exec branch engine.

Impeaching and removing Bush first just puts Cheney in the Oval Office.

They BOTH need to go, for the good of the country. But getting rid of Cheney first allows for another veep to be appointed before Bush goes — someone people will accept as president. Otherwise Nancy gets the spot.

Remember 1973 and 1974? Imagine if Nixon had gone before Agnew…

  39. 2MillionLightYearsToAndromeda says:

During the last Democratic “debate” Kucinich TWICE said that impeachment is necessary to save the country. EVERY CANDIDATE on the stage IGNORED HIM. They pretended he didn’t exist. Tim Russert and Chris Matthews asked no follow up question. Nor did they ask the other candidates where they stand on impeachment. This was the telling moment of the evening. Cowards. Each and every one of them.

THIS ARROGANT MONSTER was beating the war drums on IRAN…he was very rude and arrogant and very frightening. He kept talking about
“no surrender”,etc., – enuf said. He wants to sell a book and make money. — I ask why, because if we follow Bolten’s trek, there ain’t going to be anyone around to read it, nor will Bolten enjoy the money he thinks he can make off of it.

  41. Veritas says:

#48 This is precisely why no candidate up there deserves to be president. They refuse to acknowledge what’s really going on and want to paint things their way – the establishment way. They’re all (except Kucinich, Gravel & Paul) ignoring the huge elephants in the room right now because they’re scared shitless about their vote coming back to whiplash them. Pussies all of them and certainly not deserving of our support.

Hopefully, this cadre of establishment locksteppers is NOT all we have to choose from in 08 or it will become a case of choosing the “lesser of two evils”. This democracy deserves better than the paltry group of sycophants and spineless dolts who parade before us.

  42. Veritas says:

Bolton should just go and take his wife to another gang bang and go disappear forever.
