Cheney impeachment measure advances.

Cheney impeachment measure advances.»

Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s (D-OH) resolution to impeach Vice President Dick Cheney advanced in the House today due largely to the backing of House Republicans. Kucinich’s measure “failed to win the backing of the House leadership,” and when a vote came to table the impeachment resolution, conservatives voted against it before they voted for it:

Midway through the vote, with instructions from the GOP leadership, Republicans one by one changed their votes from yes — to kill the resolution — to no, trying to force the chamber into a debate and an up-or-down vote on the proposal.

At one point there were 290 votes to table. After the turnaround, the final vote was 251-162 against tabling, with 165 Republicans voting against it.

“We’re going to help them out, to explain themselves,” said Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas. “We’re going to give them their day in court.”

UPDATE: The House just voted 218-194 to send Kucinich’s impeachment resolution to the Judiciary Committee, thus killing the bill and preventing a debate on impeachment.

UPDATE II: CapNewsNet has video of the activity on the House floor today.

It just wrapped up and if I’m understanding what’s going on correctly, now it will go to the judiciary committee?

Kucinich said he’ll be bringing impeachment charges against Bush as well.

  6. Keltoi Says:

Okay, maybe this is the poison pill…

“The 11-page resolution also charged that Cheney purposely deceived the nation about an alleged relationship between Iraq and Al-Qaida and has “openly threatened aggression against the Republic of Iran absent any real threat to the United States.”

Are the Repubs backing this in some obscure effort to embarass Hillary for her Kyl-Lieberman vote? I know that is a stretch, but I just can’t figure out what their game is…..

  7. missmolly Says:

Let’s hope the Dems grow some spine and actually treat this with the seriousness it deserves.

I imagine the Repubs voted to see this through, banking that the Dems won’t. If they don’t, it will effectively kill talk of impeachment once and for all, and render Cheney immune for the balance of his term.

Dems — this is the only chance you get. Proceed carefully, but fearlessly.

  8. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

    Good job Dennis!!!!!

How ironic that the “sissy, vegetarian” is the one who has the guts to stand against the Bush/Cheney Crime Cabal.

Watch your back, Dennis……….You know how dangerous insane animals are when corned.

Hey, if the Repubs manage to embarrass Hillary while impeaching Cheney, I’d call that a two-fer.

Corporate House Democrats supporting the traitor Cheney, who’d a thunk it? Bush-in-Wonderland, Cheney-in-Wonderland and Corporate Congressional Democrats in their very own private insanity of trying to keep the traitor Cheney in Office…

Cheney is a traitor to our Bill of Rights, Cheney is a traitor to our beloved 200+ year old Constitution, Cheney is a traitor to America. And, pray tell, what is the response of the Democrats in the House of Representatives? Why to protect and cover up for Cheney treason…
    Brilliant…

  14. Arn Gunnutes Says:

Yep, thank God for the Kook.

What’s John Bolton have to do with this?

Or like they say “BRING IT ON”!!!

    Amen.

Time to NAIL his azz to the wall.

Does this mean Impeachment is ‘on the table’ even though the vote was against tabling? Even though they are stifling open debate, how does sending it to committee help to smother thee resolution?

  16. IALib Says:

Dennis Kucinich is a hero and America should thank him for standing up for the Constitution and the rule of law. It is clear that Cheney has committed impeachable offenses and that the Democratic leadership is too afraid to take a hard stand and impeach. You go Dennis!

  19. katy Says:

    thank you,TP!!!

    and THANK YOU DENNIS KUCINICH!!!
    .

I just had a thought… the house is now in debate (i guess) about the water bill that they plan to vote to override the veto…

this has been reported as a sure thing - that they WILL
    overide the veto…

you don’t think the repugs will change their minds and make the “dems” pay back for kucinich’s earlier actions, do you?

he did, after all, interrupt the house schedule with the
    impeachment resolution…

and none of this will get covered by that SCLM…

    imagine that…
    .

  20. katy Says:

over 120 repugs have voted to NOT table the bill…
more pugs than dems… the dems are switching to kill it…

i’d guessed that the pugs were doing this to call the dems,
to force them to debate this, thinking it will work against them…

brent budowsky comes on and confirms it…
i say, go dennis! … get this out there and TALK about it…
    .
“who says the span is not exciting!” -rr
    .

that was rather cool, watching those votes flip around…
damn dems… but SOME of them came back around…

All of the other investigations are related to this. Considering how important this one is, all other investigations can be put on hold.

    #24 - i agree 110%.

  23. Clyde the Ripper Says:

After this fiasco I would suggest a blanket impeachment resolution for every elected politician incumbent from the local School Board to King George the Dumb. Obviously the vote can’t be by Congress, so let it be in November of next year. If the fool has “Incumbent” after his/her name sent him/her packing with the door forcefully hitting them in the arrse on their way out. They should also be forced to leave their checkbook behind so that they can be billed for every deposit they made over and above their salary.

  24. missmolly Says:

Well….maybe…..but if they had voted with the Dem leadership to table the resolution, wouldn’t that have killed impeachment right there?

    Comment by Keltoi — November 6, 2007 @ 4:48 pm

Nah — too early in the game. It would have resurfaced. The Repubs want to show that the Dems don’t have the stomach to follow through on this. They want it to be the DEMS who prevent it from seeing the light of day.

If the Dems do cave, it truly will kill any thought of impeaching Cheney forever. The Repubs are banking on this.

  25. katy Says:

from the “killing the bill” link:

4:41 The motion to send it to the Judiciary Committee passed with only about 5 Dems voting No and 3 Republicans voting Yes. Presumably the 78 or so Dems who voted No on tabling believed that to be enough to appease their constituents, while 5 Dems actually had integrity enough to put the Constitution ahead of Pelosi and Hoyer. There was no discussion of a time limit for the Judiciary Committee to report back (even though there are precedents for insisting on one with impeachment resolutions). This bill has, of course, ALREADY been in the Judiciary Committee for months, and that committee has done nothing with it.

  26. Hardy Haberman Says:

Damn Dennis would make a kick ass president! I think his candidacy has brought some really important issues to light and I sincerely hope having his hat in the ring will keep the other candidates talking about the real issues, not the sound bites the media want.

Impeachment is overdue and any Democrat who opposes discussion of it is part of the problem. Time for the criminals in the White House to be driven out. Next year may be too late.

  27. Keltoi Says:

Does this mean Impeachment is ‘on the table’ even though the vote was against tabling? Even though they are stifling open debate, how does sending it to committee help to smother thee resolution?

    Comment by Bob — November 6, 2007 @ 4:52 pm

It doesn’t, it will now proceed. I figure the Judiciary committee will now hold hearings on it. I guess the Repubs are thinking there is no hard evidence Cheney lied about Iraq and they want it on the record, maybe…..wasn’t Waxman holding a hearing a while back looking for proof?

  28. Keltoi Says:

UPDATE: The House just voted 218-194 to send Kucinich’s impeachment resolution to the Judiciary Committee, thus killing the bill and preventing a debate on impeachment.

Which was the same result as the first vote which your headline describes as the bill advancing. So now the bill has fully advanced into getting voted down I guess.

    Comment by Kilo — November 6, 2007 @ 5:13 pm

    Scorecard, anyone?

  29. Veritas Says:

At least Dennis is making the point that impeachment should be at least “on the table” - something which Miss Nancy has failed to do for the people. Kucinich is a brave patriot and we should be grateful to have someone with the balls to stand up to this fascist establishment in Congress. What we’ve got in Congress right now is a bunch of mindless puppets.

Regardless of whether official “debate on impeachment” will occur, the people will definitely NOT permit it to rest. It will be on the lips of all americans from here on in and if the Judiciary Committee fails the people, then the people will have to take back their democracy and bring it about themselves.

Hillary and Obama had better head for the hills. The ration of $hit coming their way for this vote will be like an avalanche.

  30. Veritas Says:

You KNOW that Obama’s numbers are declining because of critical votes he either intentionally (scared) or unintentionally (conflict in scheduling) missed. Last week the MSM said that he’s missed 80% of the votes in Congress which is deplorable. What job is he getting paid for anyway? He’s certainly not being paid as a Congressman to gallavant around the country and not perform his job in congress. He’s become a major disappointment.

  31. Veritas Says:

If I were Kucinich, I’d bring it back up again……and again……and again…..and again and rub their sick, twisted faces in it. Give it as much coverage as possible bringing the greatest amount of damage to the GOP.

  32. wijg Says:

The Aliens are telling him to do it. This is a real funny story since Dennis is now screwing his own party by making the Dems have to vote against impeachment. LOL

  34. zhoward Says:

While I am behind Dennis in his fight, it would help him if he were a bit better at politics. He has been pretty much alone in this battle — and even the “help” the repubs gave him today comes from their desire to see him fail. The dems just wish his proposals would go away. Watch for more of the wacky UFO remarks.

  35. Duck Soup Says:

It’s not over. Nearly a majority of our reps have woken up to the fact that our friend Mr. Cheney is totally out of control. He is a failure on every level. From every means to every ends. Everything he touched was a disgrace, an embarrassment, and a waste of our resources. He broke the law. It’s time for him to go. There will be more votes. This is only the beginning of a long journey to jail for Mr. Cheney, and his buddy Bush.

  36. Red Pill Says:

Cowards all. Would that other Congresspersons would have the conviction and courage of Dennis Kucinich. His will be remembered as the voice crying in the wilderness as this apathetic and fearful nation slouches towards fascism. Home of the brave, indeed…

  37. Nature Rules Says:

“The Aliens are telling him to do it”

LOL But GOD telling him to do it would be A-OK? LOL

  38. Duck Soup Says:

To the whiner about Obama, he’s a breath of fresh air. Unlike Hillary trying to cover up her records until the stink finally became to great for her to maintain that position, voting to support the President’s warmongering on Iraq and then again on Iran. She is worthless. Obama makes the right decisions. He was against the Iraq war. He was against this dumb resolution against Iran. Hillary, by contrast, makes what she thinks the popular decisions are.

  39. ThomasMc Says:

I don’t know why everyone is so excited. That traitor Hoyer basically killed the bill, by sending it to limbo in the Judiciary Committee. Conyers has already said he won’t even entertain the notion of impeachment (despite his promises during the last campaign that it would be his #1 priority.)

The Democrats have become a repulsive joke, and are complicit in destroying democracy in America.

  40. Erroll Says:

Impeaching Bush and Cheney is about the only hope of ensuring that these two do not go ahead and start bombing Iran, which would mean the deaths of innocent Iranians. Do the Democrats somehow not understand that Bush and Cheney seem hell bent upon waging another war, not caring how many other innocent people get killed in the process?

  41. wijg Says:

Oh god, I just had a horrible thought. What if Pelosi comes out and apologizes for Kucinich’s resolution?

  42. Alan MacDonald Says:

Kucinich is like the Chinese kid standing up against the tank in Tiananmen Square — but this tank of repression is driven by both the phony two-party Republicans and Democrats committed to maintaining the global corporate Empire behind this facade of ‘Vichy America’.

The question now will be whether the media powers in that ‘Vichy America’ also continue to oppress and repress the growing outrage of average American people to see their government restored to the real democracy against Empire that our founding fathers envisioned and died for — or whether the media will also rebel against this stacked-deck of Empire and report the real truth to the American people.

  43. tomazulob Says:

I think the Republicans have no clue what the rest of America is thinking. 52% agree with Dennis on the Cheney impeachment. They think it is a loser for the Dems. Unfortunately, Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, Phil Hare, and the rest do too. They are all wrong. Any sane person knows the damage this cabal has done to this country and to this Constitution. I have never been prouder of being a Kucinich supporter for President. I am getting my checkbook out now for another donation.

  44. pete Says:

Aside from the ridiculous conventions of partisan politics, this is still a blatant disapproval of Cheney. He has never struck me as a “forgive and forget” kind of guy. My guess is that we will see a quick reaction, I mean over reaction. What will it be?

    1) Invade a Muslim nation?
    2) Kill George and assume complete control?
    3) Shoot his BFF in the face?

Omg! I didn’t think of that! … Somehow, I see Dennis telling her to go
    f ck herself.

  49. Badger Says:

Thanks to corruption, scandal, immorality, and especially the stellar record of President Bush, many Democrats won the 2006 elections in traditionally conservative republican districts. Pelosi et al are very worried about these democrats holding on to their seats, and is worried about herself holding on to the speakers gavel.
She is not making these Democrats from Red Districts take any controversial votes that could be used against them…especially for symbolic value. Bush’s veto makes them symbolic.
With a democrat in the white house, and democrats in control of congress, she will be able to get her legislation passed.
She’s biding her time, and p*ssing off lots of democrats….but that’s what she is doing.
The risk, of course, is the potential damage Bush could do in a year. She’s betting that most of this damage will be done to Bush himself, and the republicans.

  50. TomR Says:

    From Rawstory:

    —-
“Impeachment is not on the agenda,” Rep. Hoyer had told Fox News.”We have some major priorities. We need to focus on those.”

Despite its apparent unpopularity among Democratic legislators, the Kucinich proposal is not necessarily out of line with American public opinion: a July poll from American Research Group found that 54% of those surveyed favored the “US House of Representatives beginning impeachment proceedings against Vice President Dick Cheney.”
    —-

Hey dipsh*t Hoyer, impeachment is a major priority with the American people. Just who the hell do you think put you in Washington, Santa’s elves?

    —-
“Republicans gleefully said they wanted the debate to show the public how many Democrats would actually support impeaching Cheney, which they consider a move supported only by a fringe element of anti-war activists,” reports the Washinton Post.

“GOP leaders felt as though it was in their interest to debate the measure because it would make Democrats look bad,” according to The Hill newspaper, which reports Republican sources crediting Sen. John Shadegg (R-AZ) with the idea. The final vote count on the measure was 251-162.
    —-

Guess what GOP, Dems already look bad, so you’re beating a dead horse. But, thanks for keeping impeachment alive.

Probably no funnier than Ronnie Reagan having UFO encounters:

    http://presidentialufo.com/ronald_reagan’s_ufo_sightings.htm

  52. Brain From Planet Arous Says:

    It’s not taking the link:

    Ronald Reagan’s UFO Sightings

There are a great many stories about US presidents seeing UFOs. Only a couple of the stories actually have strong enough evidence to back up the fact a sighting took place. One case with a lot of supporting evidence involves Ronald Reagan who had two sightings that we are aware of.

Both of Reagan’s UFO sightings occurred when he was the 33rd Governor of California (1967 – 1975). The first occurred on the night that Reagan was invited to a party that actor William Holden was having in Hollywood. A number of key personalities were invited. Two of them, comedian Steve Allen, and actress Lucy Ball both told the story of Reagan’s UFO encounter.[1]

Reagan was missing when the party began and the party was held up until he and Nancy arrived nearly an hour late. According to both Allen’s and Ball’s version of events Reagan was very excited. He described the fact that he and Nancy had seen a UFO while coming down the coast highway to Los Angeles and stopped to watch the event. Some unconfirmed stories of the event stated that the object actually landed. Lucy in her account of the event stated, “After he elected President, I kept thinking about that event, and wondered if he still would have won if he told everyone that he saw a flying saucer.”

The other Reagan sighting occurred in 1974 just before Reagan ended his second term as governor. The story was told by Air Force Colonel Bill Paynter who became the pilot of Reagan’s Cessna Citation jet plane following his retirement from the Air Force.

It a story Ronald Reagan told to Norman Miller, Washington Bureau Chief for the Wall Street Journal, the governor’s plane was making an approach to land in Bakersfield California. It was during the descent that Reagan noticed a strange light behind the plane. “We followed it for several minutes, Reagan told Miler. “ It was a bright white light. We followed it to Bakersfield and all of a sudden to our utter amazement it went straight up into the heavens.”

Paynter, the pilot stated, “”it appeared to be several hundred yards away” and it was “a fairly steady light until it begun to accelerate. Then it appeared to elongate. Then the light took off. It went up a 45 degrees angle at a high rate of speed. Everyone on the plane was surprised.”

Paynter added: “The UFO went from normal speed cruise to a fantastic speed instantly. If you give an airplane power, it will accelerate, but not like a “hot rod”, and that’s what this was like. Governor Reagan expressed amazement. I told the others I didn’t know what it was. The UFO went from a normal cruise speed to a fantastic speed instantly. If you give an airplane power it will accelerate - but not like a hotrod, and that is what this was like.

We didn’t file a report on the object because for a long time they considered you a nut if you saw a UFO. “[2][3]

Reagan, in his discussion of the sighting with Norman C. Miller added that he had told Nancy about the UFO, and they had done personal research on UFOs. This research had uncovered the facts that there were references to UFOs in Egyptian hieroglyphics. Reagan was telling his story in a very animated way. This led Millar to conclude that Reagan seriously believed in UFOs. He asked him, “Governor, are you telling me that you saw a UFO?”

Suddenly, according to Millar, Reagan realized that he was talking to a reporter. “This look crossed his face,” recalled Millar, “and he said let’s just say that I’m an agnostic.”

[1] The best account was written up in Lucy Ball’s book “Lucy in the Afternoon: An intimate Memoir of Lucille Ball” written by Jim Brochu, William Morrows and Company New York 1990, page 125

[2] Alan Braham Smith and Ken Potter, “”Reagan Saw UFO While Flying – And Ordered his Pilot to Follow It,” National Enquirer, October 11, 1988

[3] UFO Researcher Stanton Friedman interviewed Paynter years later. “I spoke with

the pilot of his plane when Reagan was California Governor. I can’t recall his name

now, but Don Berliner, very up on aviation matters, immediately recognized the

name. The pilot had 30,000 hours which is a very high number. He confirmed that

the sighting occurred and that the quotes in the National Enquirer were accurate.

  53. Jim Says:

#51: Of all places Fox.com is actually carrying this story. Amazing.

They’re carrying it because they believe, as do the House Republicans, that focusing greater attention to this issue will help Republicans. There’s little polling evidence to support this assumption, however.

And of course, it shouldn’t matter what the polls say. If Bush and Cheney committed crimes against the Constitution–and there is a mountain of evidence suggesting that they did–then they should both be impeached and removed from office. It shouldn’t matter what the political implications of this might be. And from all indications, it appears that the public would basically support Congress for carrying out its Constitutional duty.

Then we don’t need the Democrats in the government at all if they’re just sitting back and letting Bush do whatever he wants. This latest update indicates that Kucinich’s impeachment bill is now dead.

“The Committee has a very busy agenda - over the next two weeks, we hope to pass a FISA bill, to vote on contempt of Congress citations, pass legislation on prisoner re-entry, court security and a variety of other very important items. We were surprised that the minority was so ready to move forward with consideration of a matter of such complexity as impeaching the Vice President. The Chairman will discuss today’s vote with the Committee members but it would seem evident that the committee staff should continue to consider, as a preliminary matter, the many abuses of this Administration, including the Vice President.

seems conyers does not think the matter is “killed”…

    i don’t understand the time stamp of 8:11pm though…

i’d like to think that too… i sure hope so…

  64. ForTruth Says:

I have hope that Conyers will take this opportunity to at least get the people to start talking about the “I” word.

  65. ForTruth Says:

Kucinich introduced this just in time to put some pressure back on the Administration, during their uncontrolled attempts to go gin-up more war.

  66. katy Says:

i don’t know why TP is characterizing it as “killing the bill”
in that update… from that link:

What’s gained? 86 Congress Members showed a level of support for impeachment. The resolution is back in the same committee but with more momentum. The media is more aware. The public is more aware. Kucinich is fired up and ready to introduce new resolutions on both Cheney and Bush. Congress heard from the public in massive numbers - the phones on the Hill were jammed. And the public is energized.

Of all places Fox.com is actually carrying this story. Amazing.

I like Dennis Kucinich, and I think Cheney should be impeached…but I have to ask….Why are the republicans and fox news doing this.???

The GOP went after Clinton for lying and its pretty clear that thats what Cheney did, why the double standard Beefeater?

Because the Republicans see this as a victory of sorts — they don’t believe for a minute that the Dems are going to do anything about it once it hits the Judiciary Committee (and they may be right). And they can rightly claim that it was the DEMS who failed to do anything.

By giving it as much publicity as possible, they paint the Dems as wimps. If the Dems don’t act on impeachment now, they basically forfeit their chance to bring it up again, and Cheney will pretty much enjoy immunity as long as he remains in office.

The Dems have a golden chance to act on this and make this whole thing backfire on the GOP. The GOP is banking on it not happening.

do notice that the kucinich resolution has been obscured, reduced to:
“A resolution raising a question of the privileges of the House.”

because they are hoping it backfires on the dems…
because they are not in touch with “the people”…

  73. Xisithrus Says:

I didn’t think that the GOP should have tried to impeach Clinton either. He should have been left to twist in the wind, that backfired too as far as I’m concerned.
    Comment by Beefeater

I didn’t mean you personally, but why the double standard among the GOP?

  74. ForTruth Says:

Queefeater is probably right. The Dems are pu$$ies.

  75. lefttown Says:

They’re always crowing about bipartisanship, and here they’ve unintentionally managed to get a bipartisan resolution to impeach Dick Cheney!
The Democrats must be the stupidest fu*kin’ bunch of people on the planet. From the Occupation to Mukasey to telecom immunity to the Cheney impeachment, they’ve managed to alienate their base, look weak, and come down on the wrong side of every important issue since November 2006.

I’ll bite. What is going on is: the Dems realize that their strongest weapon is a fully functional Bushco, free to screw up to their heart’s content. A competent replacement is, about, the only way they can be denied a “super-majority”.

    T.P.

Stenny’s motion to “Table the Bill” would have effectively killed it.

Sending it to the House Judiciary Committee keeps the Bill alive where it can have a full examination, FACTS and all.

    And please, the roll call?

    Please note,
It was the republicans that moved to save it and move it to the Judiciary. It was the Dem’s that moved to “Table the Bill”.

Those that stood for YEA on Stenny’s motion feel upholding their Oath of Office is less important than any OTHER business.

We should all be asking from our Representatives:

How are you supporting and defending the Constitution of the U.S.A. when you continue to excuse your allowances of the usurpation and willful violation of the Constitution of the U.S.A. and the Constitutional Laws derived therein?

  84. Max-1 Says:

    .

“Impeachment is not on the agenda,” Rep. Hoyer had told Fox News.”We have some major priorities. We need to focus on those.”

What OTHER priorities does Stenny and Nancy propose supersede their Oath of Office? They act as if their Oath is an inconvenience.

… or are Stenny and Nancy that inconvenience?

    .

Seeing as the bill as been referred back to the Judiciary Committee, where it has been sitting for months and months, it would be appropriate to contact the Majority and Minority leaders and members on this committee. Ask them to vote it back OUT of committee and back onto the floor ASAP.

  89. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

    Comment by wijg — November 6, 2007 @ 5:55 pm

“Worser” still, wijg - she forces Dennis to apologize…

    Comment by Leftside Annie — November 6, 2007 @ 6:06 pm

I can see Pelosi apologizing, and I can also see her asking Dennis to apologize. He won’t. Not now, not ever. NOT EVER!!

  90. impeachcheneythenbush Says:

And of course, it shouldn’t matter what the polls say. If Bush and Cheney committed crimes against the Constitution–and there is a mountain of evidence suggesting that they did–then they should both be impeached and removed from office. It shouldn’t matter what the political implications of this might be. And from all indications, it appears that the public would basically support Congress for carrying out its Constitutional duty.

    Comment by Jim — November 6, 2007 @ 6:46 pm

The Constitution does not state that the House undertakes impeachment proceedings “if the polls support that idea.” It states that such impeachment proceedings SHALL be undertaken. It is a Constitutional RESPONSIBILITY and OBLIGATION. It is, in fact, a violation of the Constitution NOT to do so when evidence is clearly apparent that “high crimes and misdemeanors” have occurred.

This is along the train of thought that “Plunger” has been bringing to this blog. While he may seem extreme in some respects, I don’t think he’s incorrect about AIPAC pushing the idea of aggression toward Iran. Iran poses no danger to the U.S., but certainly could to Israel. It’s just possible that the U.S. is being “encouraged” to strike at Iran to precipitate a counter-strike against Israel by Iran. Israel would then feel justified in finally using their nukes against Iran.
