Black military enlistment drops under Bush.
In the last several years under President Bush, black enlistment in the Army has dropped “by about half.” CBS News reports that this trend is fueled by strong dissatisfaction with Bush’s Iraq policies:
The Department of Defense has studied why black enlistment has plummeted and found many of the people they call “influencers” in the black community – parents, teachers, clergy – feel in general that Bush administration policies have hurt African Americans. And more than any other group, they oppose the war in Iraq. [...]
But even here, there are gung-ho Marines troubled by this war. Albert Thames retired as a staff sergeant 30 years ago.
“The war is very unpopular, and it’s going to get worse,” he said. “As long as it’s a volunteer army, I’d tell ‘em not to volunteer.”

Not necessarily; they just see these things more clearly, because the administration has no interest in entertaining them with bread and circuses. As long as the white majority is distracted, BushCo can safely ignore black concerns.

I’m a little unsure about the wisdom of jumping in here, but I don’t think it’s fair to say that Xisithrus “doesn’t know the difference between” a consecience and a soul. I think the point he was making was that, in his view, what DB calls a conscience may in fact be close to Xisithrus’s concept of soul.
To extrapolate from that judgment to an inability to tell the difference I think is a stretch, especially if you’re going to base a further argument on that assumption.

Aggressive religions which seek to hold, or subvert, secular authority are dangerous as heck. And as far as my telling people to stop feeding the trolls, I gave that up a long time ago as a lost cause. And I do participate occasionally just to join in on a game of whack a troll. As usual Daryl has made an azz out of himself by repeating the bull that the rightwing spreads like so much cow shlt. Look Daryl if you can’t think for yourself, then remember the quote: “A mind is a terrible thing to waste”. Wake up and stop smell Dubya’s shorts, if you look at the death toll among our troops it’s gone up not down. Explain how if more troop die than in any year of the war so far, that’s progress? You ignorant statements show you don’t support the troops at all, because if you did, you wouldn’t want them to die.
Believe me Daryl as a veteran I know what it’s like to lose my friends in combat. I went to the VA Hospital last year for treatment, and met a Iraq war vet with no legs. He was in the VA Support office complaining about not receiving benefit for disability. It made me so mad I couldn’t stand to watch him beg for something he more than deserves. If you really want to do something, then get off your butt and go the the VA Hospital and you’ll see the same thing I did. Neglect, denial, and a ungreatful government, which uses our troops and then throws them away like trash.
Don’t take my word for it, go and see for yourself. But don’t just look at the surface, check with the wounded troops. Ask them if they are getting the benefits them so much deserve. You will soon stop singing stupid republican tune you’re so fund of.

November 12th, 2007 at 2:35 pmOf course, overall enlistment is shrinking as well. Also, the number of enlistees being granted “deferments” for medical, legal and moral issues is growing. Some “experts” are predicting that the number of “special cases” will amount to, as much as, 25% of all new recruits. Perhaps the militariy’s new recruiting slogan should be:
“The Few, The Proud, The Unemployable”
The bottom line is that U.S. military forces are shrinking in numbers of “combat ready” troops, in overall capability, in readiness to respond to emergencies and morale. This unwanted war is eviscerating our ability to secure national security.

November 12th, 2007 at 2:47 pmYesterday on Sunday Morning show with Charles Osgood, great interview with several black Marines from now and other wars. ALL agreed Iraq is not the place to enlist for black young people.
Remember the line, what if they held a war and nobody came? It is time for that to happen now. Let George get his nephews and nieces into his war.
