This weekend, Frank W. Buckles, traveled to Arlington National Cemetary for a ceremony honoring his service in World War I. Buckles, 106 years old, is one of just three known suriving World War I veterans. Asked about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Buckles told the Washington Post, “I’m no authority, but I’m not in favor of war unless it’s an emergency.”
It’s articles like this that frustrate me when TP has the day off but

There’s little juicy in today’s postings.

November 12th, 2007 at 7:47 pmGee…I wonder if they would have let this guy make his views known at the Veteran’s day parade…
November 12th, 2007 at 7:51 pmClearly a phony soldier. Where’s Five-Star General R. Limbaugh when you need him, to put this sniveling coward in his place? Smacked out on Oxycontin, down in the Dominican Republic? Really? Never mind…
November 12th, 2007 at 7:59 pm“emergency.” – – Lots of latitude in the definition of that word in the BushCo lexicon.
November 12th, 2007 at 8:11 pm“There’s little juicy in today’s postings.” – TP has missed a potentially big story today:
White House ordered to preserve all e-mail…
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/11/12/white.house.email.ap/index.html
November 12th, 2007 at 8:14 pmWASHINGTON (AP) – A federal judge Monday ordered the White House to preserve copies of all its e-mails, a move that Bush administration lawyers had argued strongly against.
U.S. District Judge Henry Kennedy directed the Executive Office of the President to safeguard the material in response to two lawsuits that seek to determine whether the White House has destroyed e-mails in violation of federal law.

Uh, please don’t use the Wiki for facts.
November 13th, 2007 at 12:11 amThe wiki article has 49 references and 10 external links. Even if a few of the entries are incorrect there are still vastly more than three survivors remaining.
November 13th, 2007 at 12:55 amrothery, it’s quite likely that the above article was limiting the veterans to US personnel–not ALL.
November 13th, 2007 at 2:41 amSecondly, the wiki article included some veterans who didn’t actually serve DURING the war (either still in training or their enlistment came between the 11/11 armistice and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles).
You don’t need to live a hundred plus years to see the wisdom of Mr. Buckles’ pronouncement. But you do need a lick of common sense.
November 13th, 2007 at 7:57 amEmergency? Will a missile half way through its course be emergency enough? Such arguments are, at best, senile. The course of action should be: Get the facts as best as you can, triangulate with your long term strategic desires, attack where necessary, be swift and decisive, and pull out soon after the job is done.
In Iraq, the Bush administration delivered on the first few points, but got bogged down under its naivete of “spreading deomcracy” and “building institutions”.
November 13th, 2007 at 8:43 amBut don’t you know? It IS an emergency!!! There are great waves of Islamofascists breaking against our borders ready to put all our women in Burqas and lash our barbers! This is the defining struggle of our age!!! When’s my tee time? See you at the club later.
November 13th, 2007 at 8:44 amhe’s obviously a senile old phony fart who hates america and wants the turrists to win.
besides! this IS an emergency! the corporations and America NEED that oil! its a matter of extreme import.

What part of the Wikipedia article are you basing your argument on? I count three surviving U.S. servicemen on that list.
November 13th, 2007 at 9:31 am“The course of action should be: Get the facts as best as you can”
It’s too bad that that tiny noun, “facts,” is the whole problem.
Isn’t it?
November 13th, 2007 at 11:57 am>Emergency? Will a missile half way through its course be emergency >enough? Such arguments are, at best, senile.
Good, then stop making them. The dude didnt explain what an emergencey was. You assuming it means “waiting till missles are fired” or whatever, is pure speculative strawman buffoonery. It certainly isnt an emergencey when the missles don’t exist anywhere but the the deluded methamphetamine paranoiac psychosis of a deeply deluded straussian neocon and the alchoholic informant someone paid to tell him the missles were real.
November 14th, 2007 at 8:19 ambut got bogged down under its naivete of “spreading deomcracy†and “building institutionsâ€.
