Gore joins global clean energy venture firm.

Al Gore today announced that he is joining venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers “to guide investments that help combat global warming.” Gore will be donating his salary to Alliance for Climate Protection, “an advocacy group he co-founded that focuses on accelerating policy solutions to the climate crisis.” Firedoglake and EnergySmart have more.

  2. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

I guess we can finally stop hoping he’ll hop into the race and subject himself to the same slurs he endured in ‘99 and 2000. If any of you think the media wouldn’t have just re-started it’s smear campaign on him, you haven’t been paying attention.

  3. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Sorry, typo – should have read “its smear campaign…”

  4. Zooey says:

    Hey, TMM.

Whatever Al does, it’s never good enough. The trolls are frickin’ terrified of him.

    I can live with that.

Behold, positive, peaceful action towards a noble goal – something that’s been missing from America lately.

Look you boot-lickin’ Neocons, IT’S CAPITALISM working toward conservation. Which will most likely create more jobs for Americans, unlike GM who would rather moving everything overseas…

  8. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

I’m guessing nobody in the venture capital community will be concerned with his troubling polo shirts, his vile three-button suits, his “earthtone” jackets or his weight. He will be respected for his many accomplishments, among them being the only person in U.S. history to have been elected to the office of president and prevented from serving by bloodless judicial coup.

I’m sure they’ll be as respectful with Al as they are with Michael Moore.

  10. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Zooey, is the venture capital community friendly with Moore? I wasn’t aware of that. He does tend to bring in the bucks, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Gore should start using the catch phrase Trey and Matt derisivly assigned to their version of him: “I’m super serial.”.

Such a move would illustrate that Gore is tolerantly amused by his portrayal on South Park, but is not bothered or intimidated. If he plays it right, Trey and Matt’s sophomoric character assassination attempt could work in his favor.

  13. Keltoi at Night says:

Good for Al Gore. I hope it works out well for him. He once described himself as “not a very good politician”, but he is a very successful activist in what is indeed a noble effort.

TMM, I think he should come out and say that if he’d been elected President, the first thing he would have done is fully fund a hunting expedition to find and kill ManBearPig.

  18. Wilco says:

And that there’s no way he would have lost ManBearPig at Tora Bora

  19. Jason M. Hendler says:

Finally, environmentalists are using capitalism to address environmental issues. There are many ways to create marketable solutions to most situations, and that is the first / best way to approach it.

Germany granted 20 year contracts to clean electric power providers, so that they could amortize the costs of the clean energy infrastructure over a long time period, to reduce the costs for the energy to the consumer. Now, Germany is the #1 manufacturer of solar panels, as a direct result to this capitalistic policy.

  20. pluege says:

Gore’s environmental notoriety and activitism is very commendable, but he could be far more influential in the betterment of humnity if he would run again for President.

Uh, right. The world breathlessly awaits Gore’s reaction to the stunning blow inflicted by South Park.

Ooo, whataburn! They made fun of him on a late night cable show!

Can he recover? Can he use it to his advantage?

    Give me a break.

Perhaps…it is the most powerful job in the world, but the things you have to do to get it seem to come at the price of your immortal soul. Assuming you still have one having gotten to that point.

If I were a Progressive, I would love the current Al Gore and look back at the 2000 version and go “what was I thinking?” After all, he chose Lieberman, and he is totally reviled now.

If Gore were going back into politics this would have been his year. I honestly believe him when he says he is done.

Why is it politicians only become believable when they declare they are leaving politics…?

At least Progressives can sleep at night, unlike the “conservatives” who voted for GWB in 2000. How many times must they look at this country and go “what was I thinking? how incredibly stupid must I be?”

and scarfing up that technology, knowing what a good thing it was…
US oil corporations made sure that solar energy would not have any opportunity to be of any kind of consequence or competition…
    with ronnie’s help of course…

same story with the auto market… the US lost to japan…

i remember the hope and promises of the 70s…
    dashed and doomed…
“Finally, environmentalists are using capitalism” my ass.

    Comment by DieNowForPeace — November 12, 2007 @ 6:47 pm

Actually, what will sadly happen here is small, innovative green companies will become successful by developing real solutions to these horrendous problems, producing many new jobs in the US.

In turn, big, out-dated dinosaur firms like GM will then use the last of their govt-mandated bailout dollars to buy these smaller firms out. They will next either put them out of business deliberately, hoping to keep their obsolete technologies in business, or move the factories and the jobs created overseas in a desperate attempt to increase profit margins to an obscene level.

Can anyone explain why “conservatives” **cough.. cough** hate “conservation” so much? SAME ROOT WORD, no???

    “Bad conservative… bad conservative…”.

Uhhhh, because the current political situation makes them puke.

Gore doing what he’s doing right now is the best he can do. He can’t focus his attention on global warming if he’s running for pres. Keep him out of the election, but keep him firmly planted in the environmental camp.

I love Gore where he his right now, up front and not up front if you know what I mean…

a capitalist donating his salary? We’ll take it. Redefining capitalism is long overdue, and Gore is doing exactly that. Capitalism Al Gore style sounds pretty smart, unlike your vile, bloated corpse of capitalism that you jack off over.

There’s logic in that there sarcasm. Can you imagine what would happen if Al made a movie extolling the virtues of the necons and the evils of oversight? Maybe started off with a “short” about how questioning those in power is “anti-American”.

After their heads stopped exploding the 24% would be down to around 6%.

it’s apparent that you have no understanding of how a venture capital firm works. if you are so stupid that you think venture capitalists work for free, then there is less hope for you than there is for a wingnut to fight for his country. Now we know what a moron you really are. thanks for proving the obvious.

Me too! I must confess it’s not an original idea. I stole it from the Star Trek episode where they overloaded the robots with a series of unbelievable acts and statements. I can just picture the smoke rolling out of BillO’s ears while saying “Error. Does not compute. Cheney coordinate. Error…”

That’s preferable to their heads exploding! I think we can deal with 6%; without relying on violence or mass incarceration. With the current 24%, I’m not so sure.
