On Fox News’ Hannity and Colmes Sunday, guest Rod Wheeler said recent reports of local police in Arizona identifying a criminal suspect as Hispanic — even though someone Hispanic could be white or dark-skinned — did not qualify as racial-profiling. Wheeler explained that in this case, police identified “the suspect as being a Hispanic male. Not a black male. Not a Chinese male, with his eyes like this (pulls eyes to side), but a Hispanic male.” Watch it:

November 13th, 2007 at 12:52 pmOK, I’m confused. If the police know that the suspect is Hispanic, based on information from victims and eyewitnesses, how is this “racial profiling”? That’s a legitimate descriptive point. On the other hand, if the suspect is merely known to have dark skin and hair and the police are making an ASSUMPTION the suspect is Hispanic, the complainants have a point — since the suspect could be Hispanic, Filipino, Pakistani, Native American, Eskimo, Samoan, or any one of several other ethnicities.
I can understand Hispanics not wanting to see that term used needlessly to describe criminals, since that can enforce negative stereotypes. But when you are trying to get a physical description out to the public of a rapist at large, you want to give as clear a picture as possible. Saying “dark skin and dark hair” doesn’t differentiate between an African person, a Korean person, a Mexican person, or a Pakistani person. All of these ethnicities look very different — which I think was the point Rod Wheeler was trying to make in his politically incorrect way.
Maybe they should just use artist sketches with no verbal description.

If making Fox look foolish were a firing offense, they’d have nobody left to run the network.
November 13th, 2007 at 1:59 pmI am so glad you have atributed this label to me as I’ve always been offended by my oppressors calling me “American” and now Hits and the others can call us “United States of Un-American” or else be labelled bigots!

This is why I prefer to use the term “United Statesian” to refer to myself and the term “American” to refer to Sioux and Quechuans and Choctaws and Mayans and whatnot.
November 13th, 2007 at 2:07 pmWhat’s next on Fox News? Are we going to see someone describing a Caucasian by pulling out a piece of ham and sticking it on their forehead and saying that the person’s color is like a pig? “White” people have pink skin, not pure white like an aspirin tablet. But calling attention to that on the air would be so offensive as to be obscene.
Or I guess we can look forward to more obscene and irrelevant racial stereotyping with someone on Fox describing a Jew by pushing down their nose or someone describing a black person by jutting out their lips. These are not accurate and don’t reflect an entire race, just as what that person did to his eyes did not accurately reflect the way Chinese eyes look (and there are many types of eyes among the Chinese people).
Why doesn’t Fox News have someone on who, instead of mentioning Bush’s name, just walks around swinging their arms like a monkey (that’s the real way Bush walks), or bobbing their head up and down as they pan the room and making “mmm”, “hmmm”, “unnhhhh” sounds after every word? That would be an extremely accurate physical description of Bush and that person wouldn’t even have to mention Bush’s name for us to understand who that person is referring to.

There is, unfortunately, a lot of stupid people out there.
People who call Native Americans spics, wetbacks and other derisive terms, ignorantly. While those who can tell the difference call them other names. It is the same experience with almost every “non-white” race and ethnic group.
This is the underbelly of todays Fascist Kook Neocon Empire of “Oh, Sh!t!!”.
Racism is alive and well in this country. You only have to look at the fact Faux Snewz has viewers to know that. You also can look at the fact the Bush (Mis)Administration has supporters.
Rampant Racism is one of the signs of a fascist state.
FK’NEOS.
November 13th, 2007 at 2:19 pmWheeler has since said he was “solly”
November 13th, 2007 at 2:30 pmI used to work with a dude who called a Native American co-worker “Taco” which really pissed him off. But y’know, they all look the same to folks who are ignorant.
November 13th, 2007 at 2:31 pmOf course, the guy who called the Native American “Taco was covered in prison tattoos displaying his Arian Nations loyalty and had a Harley Davidson tattoo with swastikas in it. Did I mention he also had no front teeth as they’d been kicked in during a bar fight and couldn’t use one f his eyes after having a stroke while detoxing from years of hard drug abuse. Quite the picture of Arian Pride if I’ve ever seen it! :)
November 13th, 2007 at 2:35 pmWell, isn’t that how Chinese people look? Why the surprise and the faux angst? Further, racial profiling could be a very effective way to augment national security.

Well, considering that the oldest bones found on this planet, either come from Asia or Africa, and if you are white, then you have “Chinese” genetics…..Unless you believe in the tooth fairy myth of 4004 BC humans being created.

BOTH SAMI SOSA AND CAMERON DIAZ ARE HISPANIC! HISPANIC REFERS TO NO PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES, JUST REFERS TO YOUR HISTORY TO SPANISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES. HOW WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO KNOW THIS FROM A PERSON WITHOUT ASKING THEM?
THE THING MIGHT AS WELL HAVE READ “POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR A MALE WHOSE PARENTS LOOK LIKE THEY LIVE IN MIAMI!”
p.s. Asians have a lot of common features, one being THEY DON’T HAVE THAT CAVEMAN WHITE GUY BROW BONE!
November 13th, 2007 at 3:50 pmMaybe I’m just ignorant, but what’s wrong with using “Hispanic” to describe someone? Doesn’t that imply that they’re likely middle-darker skin, likely dark hair, someone that’s potentially Mexican or Puerto Rican or Latin American, or something like that?
I’m sure there are outlyers, but isn’t that a reasonable assumption to make, and doesn’t that provide a reasonably good description? At least as good as “white male”, no?
November 13th, 2007 at 3:50 pmdescribe someone? Doesn’t that imply that they’re likely middle-darker skin, likely dark hair, someone that’s potentially Mexican or Puerto Rican or Latin American, or something like that?
Both my parents are Bolivian, but people never describe me as Hispanic. Ive gotten Hawaiian, Asian, white, eastern European, and mixes of all those things. The assumption that Hispanics are brown, dark haired, etc. is not reasonable enough. You have countries like Dominican Republic, and Argentina who lay the assumption to SHIT.
November 13th, 2007 at 4:00 pmRight, of course there are exceptions, and not everyone’s going to fit under what most people consider Hispanic. But it’s at least as good as “white male”, right?
Also, since this is a description looking for a criminal, it makes the most sense to me to use terms that people will understand, even if they’re not technically accurate. The witness probably meant “mexican” but thought that “hispanic” was being more PC.

That’d mean they were looking for a middle-aged Jewish guy in New York.
November 13th, 2007 at 4:53 pmI see a person who was most likely a victim of racial slurs, applying a stereotypical slur to another minority.
November 13th, 2007 at 5:23 pmIgnorance knows no boundaries.
I can’t stop laughing at the first comment. I won’t be able to look into a closet without visualizing a man in a diaper and tap shoes (maybe singing something from Funny Girl).
