Homophobic Surgeon General Nominee Reveals Bush Plans To Recess Appoint Him»

holsinger54.jpg President Bush’s controversial Surgeon General nominee, Dr. James Holsinger, has resigned from the board of trustees of the Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY. From a seminary e-mail:

From: Communication Office [at Asbury Seminary]
To: ATS Info, Staff News, Faculty News
Subject: Announcement from the Board of Trustees
November 12, 2007 3:53PM

The Asbury Theological Seminary Board of Trustees met on November 12, 2007. The board discussed the resignation letters submitted by Dr. James Holsinger and Mr. Phillip Connolly. Following this discussion and prayer, the board voted unanimously to receive these resignation letters with regret.

We realize from time to time board members resign before the end of a their term, however we have a deep appreciation for the many years of service, dedication and commitment of Dr. Holsinger and Mr. Connolly. The board of trustees wishes them both all the best in their future endeavors.

The Board of Trustees

Holsinger is resigning before the end of his term. A source in Wilmore tells Bible Belt Blogger that Holsinger is resigning because he expects to be recess appointed as Surgeon General:

Holsinger’s nomination, opposed by several leading Democrats, has stalled in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. But Holsinger is telling people the president plans to appoint him to the post anyway once the Congress goes into its holiday recess.

Holsinger has come under intense criticism for his long history of prejudice toward gays and lesbians. He founded a church that “ministers to people who no longer wish to be gay or lesbian” and “opposed a decision to allow a practicing lesbian to be an associate pastor” in the United Methodist Church. In 1991, he also authored a graphic document arguing that gay sex is “intuitively” unnatural and can lead to “lacerations, perforations and deaths.”

Last month, ThinkProgress noted that three months after his July hearing, Holsinger has still not responded to a Senate health committee follow-up questionnaire. Without his answers, the committee has not scheduled a vote on his nomination. Looks like the committee might never receive a response from Holsinger now.

    Don’t recess or you’re gonna get -

Dr. James Holsinger- “If she weighs less than a duck then she must be a witch!!!” kind of thinking, very backward and well, neanderturd logic.

  3. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Simple solution, as Buck Fush intimated: don’t recess.

  4. nofltwlt Says:

That’s easy - no, no recess for you! (Soup Nazi)

  5. Krazny Says:

Funny, the only way Bush can get his way, is to make end runs around congress. I can’t think of anything, that makes him look more pathetic, and irrelevant.

How about when he tried to escape tough questioning by heading out a locked door?

#$%#$%&!!!! I simply cannot fully express my absolute DISGUST of this White-House-squatting moron’s *bleepity-bleep- bleep-bleeping* ignorance, bigotry and homophobia!!

  8. Veritas Says:

Isn’t it time for Bush to recess permanently yet?? This country simply doesn’t have another year’s time for his continued irresponsibility, lies, and corruption. We’re sliding into the abyss right now, thanks to him and his cabal. Congress is complicit in it all, that’s becoming patently clear as days elapse. Will there be a candidate who is not “pro establishment” to come to the aid of this country?? Will Al Gore run?? I see he hasn’t ruled it out as per his recent comments. His numbers in the polls are high even without him declaring his candidacy.

  9. Veritas Says:

What IS the official countdown to Bush’s PERMANENT RECESS in Paraguay??

  10. Veritas Says:

Holsinger’s simply another “bush nutjob” with a medical degree.

  11. koko the talking gorilla Says:

“He founded a church that ‘ministers to people who no longer wish to be gay or lesbian’…”

Sounds like Holsinger is just another deeply closeted self-loathing gay man. Would any of you be shocked if he got busted for cruising a men’s toilet a la Foley, Haggard, Larry Craig, Bob Allen, Glen Murphy Jr., etc etc etc.? I wouldn’t.

  12. Veritas Says:

If congress had any balls at all, they wouldn’t recess until GWB leaves office. But then again, we know how much they LOVE to work, don’t we?

  13. Veritas Says:

koko: How much you wanna bet that Holsinger is a closet queen?

If Bush were an honorable man, he would send up the most qualified individual and let the Consititutional process work. Because Bush is not an honorable man, he plays hide and seek with the Senate. If Bush cannot “sell” the candidate on his or her credentials, then maybe that person isn’t really the right person for the job. I wonder what the right side thinks of Bush’s recess shenanigans? I wonder what they will say when the Democratic president does this kind of thing. Should be fun…

  15. GSD Says:

Watch the news for this creep. He’ll be toe-tapping in a rest room or offering hummers to undercover cops before you can say “closet case”.

  16. ralph the wonder llama Says:

koko, the only people who would shock me if they came out as gay are people who are tolerant but straight.

The ones who are intolerant — they’re either hiding something or they’re just plain ugly souls.

  17. GSD Says:

Bush likes recess appointments because it reminds him of his childhood recesses and happy childish things like eating baloney sandwiches and killing ants with a magnifying glass.

  18. Leftside Annie Says:

    Veritas - NO BET!

  19. Krazny Says:

To be honest, I don’t think Bush is interested in being president anymore. At least that is the feeling I get. I think it is to much for him, and he is unhappy, that daddy’s friends won’t bail him out this time. This is how a petulant child acts, when he doesn’t get what he wants. Not a leader.

I wonder what the right side thinks of Bush’s recess shenanigans?
“Yay! Bush is a strong leader that the un-American democrat congress wants to hurt.”

I wonder what they will say when the Democratic president does this kind of thing.
“She’s dodging the will of the people! It’s un-American! Impeach her!”

(Apolgies for correctly spelling everything. I know a REAL BushCo apologist would probably misspell at least two words. I did get the “democrat congress” right, though.)

  21. koko the talking gorilla Says:

To be honest, I don’t think Bush is interested in being president anymore.

I agree. I think it’s plain that Bush would like nothing better than to wash his hands of the whole goddamn nightmare he has created and walk away.

It’s the story of his life: Bush f_cks things up, and others clean up his mess. Time and time again.

You speak the truth…Every presser makes this more apparent. He looks bored and medicated.

  25. GSD Says:

Chimpy looks drugged out of his little chimpish mind. I would love to meet him in person and laugh in his face. Unlike the suck-up media who titter like start struck school girls when Commander Guy makes his usual lame jokes at pressers.

Chimpster, I laugh out loud everytime I see your monkeyish face.

  26. Aanya Says:

George W Bush is going mach speed now to insure his legacy as the “Worst President Ever”! Who would ever imagine that the little moron would be so hell bent on insuring he leave no competent, responsible, intelligent crony in any position when his term ends. I have to wonder if he’s doing this on purpose. He’s surrounding himself with the bottom of life’s barrel, to try and make himself look like he’s relevant!

  27. kvetch Says:

Holsinger’s plan to start a church to convert gays and lesbians has provided me with a light bulb moment. Anybody interested in changing straights to homosexuality? This is truly a neglected and overlooked study in human sexuality!!!! Your thoughts and comments are welcome!

  28. katy Says:

this is another example of dubby exhibiting the classic signs of the

  29. EvilPoet Says:

Another day, another outrage, another free pass - operation ongoing nightmare continues with no end in sight… The only thing that would be surprising about this would be if anyone found it surprising. Does the almighty Commander Guy have Americas best interest at heart? Sure he does and it’s safe to let a fox guard a chicken house.

    Comment by kvetch — November 13, 2007 @ 6:50 pm

This is a super idea. Sort of a reverseable reaction type deal. First we need to find out how these alleged programs work, then we just do the opposite. Thing is we really need to get Daryll in on this as he claims first hand knowledge of gender prefernence conversion therapy so he would be an excellent consultant. Clearly if this type of thing really worked it would have to work in both directions!

  31. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Kvetch, we recognize your humor, but I’m afraid Dr. James Holsinger and the like would sadly only recognize what they believe to be The Gay Agenda, already being put into action by thousands of operatives across the nation.

(Oddly, most of those operatives, working in secret, patrolling men’s rooms and gym showers, will turn out to be closeted Republicans.)

  32. Krazny Says:

From what I have read in the papers, this church already exists, and usually meets in public restrooms.

  33. Usual Leftist Says:

From what I heard, Holsinger has a part-time gig as a nasty, naughty Santa boy during the Holidays.

  34. Usual Leftist Says:

I am begging you, please ignore the troll.

  36. Bob Says:

When the hypocritical republicans complain about the Democratic President doing these sorts of things, the ultimate response will be, “Bush did it, too (and no one complained then)”.

  37. dbadass Says:

I am assuming that the APA and similar groups do not acknowledge these conversion programs. I also assume that the individuals these “churches” “fix” must seek it out but still how can this sort of thing be legal what with the massive danger inherent with messing with these people’s heads. As much as I love Kvetch’s idea, we are going to need to tackle the complex ethical questions prior to beginning this research

We either blow the lid off the absurdity of being able to change one’s sexual orientation or force the Dobsons, Robertsons, Holsingers and Sheldons to be our first volunteers!! I think there are $$$$ to be made here.

    Comment by kvetch — November 13, 2007 @ 7:23 pm

I am less concerned with cashing in and more with the blowing the lid off the absurdity part. You thought is pure genious yet so simplistic. Has anyone yet asked any of these kooks if this stuff “works” both ways? I still thing this “churches” should be subject to criminal penalties for the mental anguish and damage inherent in their programs which have not been subjected to any clinical study.

Is that your idea of a witty or meaningful response? It’s neither. Are you 1) 10 years old, or 2) drunk as a souse, or 3) just naturally dumb as a bag of snot?

  49. Lefty Patriot Says:

well, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in “you lefties are the radical fringe”-land now that over half of America sees Bush for the criminal he is. Funny, Clinton is still in the 60s approval rating territory.

  50. ralph the wonder llama Says:

koko, troll buster has good reason for his characterization of Usual Left Tit as a flag-worthy troll. If you’re not familair with UL’s antics, his first several “contributions” to this thread should serve as ample evidence the crap we’re likely to get from him.

  51. kvetch Says:

    Hindbadass

I once called cspan to speak to former homophobic CA rep, William Dannemeyer, who was insisting homosexuality was a choice. I asked him how long he experimented with other males before he made his choice to be a breeder. I got no reponse.

  52. dbadass Says:

    Kvetch:
That hardly suprises me but Holsinger is supposed to be a doctor. In the absence of clinical studies, is not what he seems to support totally inappropriate, unethical, and a violation of Hippocratic oath? BTW: it’s just dbadass.

  53. koko the talking gorilla Says:

Ralph, thanks for your thoughtful intervention, but with all due respect Usual Left’s offenses must be on other threads, because I don’t see anything at all wrong with his posts on this thread. Far be it from me to defend a troll, I think you know, but what I see on this thread is UL’s comment about how Holsinger “has a part-time gig as a nasty, naughty Santa boy during the Holidays” and after that just one-on-one sniping between him and trollbuster. No way does that justify red-flagging. In fact, in that context, trollbuster is every bit as annoying as a real troll. Ironic, eh?

  54. kvetch Says:

Sorry dbadass-typo-hit the n in error. Going off to watch Nova on PBS. Starts at 8PM EST and it’s about another of my favorite bete noires - intelligent design and it’s not about Dolce & Gabana!!

  55. dbadass Says:

Damn and me without TV. I guess I will have to buy that one as it is too late to get a colleague or the library media people to tape it for me for use in class. I do miss NOVA and a few other programs but stand by my decision. Best to you kvetch!!

Let there be no recess. None.

If soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines can give up there holiday at home while trying simply to stay alive in Iraq, surely you and your Democratic compatriots can—at the very least—give up your holiday at home to save this Nation!

  57. ralph the wonder llama Says:

You have a point, koko. UL started in on his game on this thread then abandoned it. Maybe troll buster had some impact after all. In any case, UL is one of the more annoying and less useful trolls here. Typically he’ll show up, leave a slime trail of stupidity, egg on some of us who enjoy the Whack-A-Trollâ„¢ and basically waste as much time and bandwidth as he can get away with.

Many suspect him of being the latest incarnation of Mr. Pee, who cemented his reputation (back before we had registration) when he name-jacked a fallen soldier and smeared the man’s comrade who was posting at the time.

  58. Tender Chicken Says:

Business as usual. Anyone sick of this nonsense yet? Anyone sick of the bigotry yet? Anyone out there anymore who gives a damn about this pandering to the religious whackjob fringe? When will this nonsense stop? Are you listening Congress, or do you have your heads buried in the sand again.

  65. totallynext Says:

Why does no one challege recess appointments?

    The constitution states:
Section 2 - Civilian Power over Military, Cabinet, Pardon Power, Appointments

The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.

THE VACANCY DID NOT OCCUR DURING THE RECESS. IT WAS ALREADY OPEN - THUS MUST GO THROUGH THE CONFIRMATION PROCESS.

CONGRESS - TAKE IT TO COURT.

The purpose of this provision was because the original Congress were part time and lived in freakin 1776 - When it took a week to ride from Georgia to Philadelphia and they were not a full time legistlators in full time sessions.

In fact I believe they only meet once a year at that time.
