CNN reports that at 2:30 PM EST today, Rep. Dennis Hastert (R-IL) will announce on the House floor that he is retiring from Congress. Hastert’s early retirement would trigger a special election to replace him.
UPDATE: This isn’t the first time the media have announced that Hastert is resigning. A couple of their past inaccurate predictions:
An Illinois Republican source tells us former Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) plans to resign November 6 this year instead of finishing out his term. [Robert Novak, 8/22/07]
Former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) is expected to announce Thursday that he is resigning his seat in Congress effective later this year. [Roll Call, 10/17/07]
Good riddance. Don’t let the door hit you in the a$$.
November 15th, 2007 at 9:54 amMust have been offered a sweet deal from one of his lobbyist buds.
Hey, don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
November 15th, 2007 at 9:55 amcut ‘n’ runners, like rove, delay, foley, etc., etc. Republicans are cowards.
November 15th, 2007 at 9:57 amHopefully it’s so he can start working on his defense on an impending corruption indictment. And I don’t care if the door hits him on the way out!
November 15th, 2007 at 9:57 amPerv-Enabler/congressional Page Scandal Denny is getting out of dodge and not a moment too soon.
He, obviously, sees the handwriting on the wall. So many investigations/so little time!! Adios fatcat Denny!
November 15th, 2007 at 9:57 amWhat’s he doing? Putting himself out to pasture at the Fat Farm?
November 15th, 2007 at 9:58 amMore of the same in bull shit bush world…The creater’s, enabeler’s and wrong doer’s collect their cash and exit stag reich, untouched…Blessings
November 15th, 2007 at 10:01 amThe same week Larry Flynt is threatening to start talking again?
Surely not.
November 15th, 2007 at 10:03 amI thought the air seemed a little fresher this morning…
November 15th, 2007 at 10:08 amHe’s got a potential conflict of interest issue out here in the heartland with a sweetheart land deal that just happens to abutt to an interstate spur he forced through.
November 15th, 2007 at 10:11 amGee — we still don’t know what Hastert is running away from. Most legislators who choose to retire wait until they have finished serving the term their constituents elected them to serve. When one leaves before that’s finished, it’s generally for one of two reasons:
1) Health concerns grave enough to prevent him from doing his job, or
2) He’s about to be indicted or implicated in a scandal (or already has been).
So which is it, Dennis?
November 15th, 2007 at 10:14 amAMF ..PLEASE stumble on the investigations front door on your way OUT!
November 15th, 2007 at 10:17 amHas-Turd, the toe-tapping ex-Speaker is on his way out. In more than one way.

November 15th, 2007 at 10:45 amHasturd, I’d like to say it’s been nice, but, actually, it’s been miserable.
November 15th, 2007 at 10:47 amThat’ll get rid of a lot of the pork in Congress. And yes, you can take that two ways.
November 15th, 2007 at 10:58 amRepukelicans just may decide to stick an apple in his mouth, place him in the foyer at The House and kneel to him as they enter.
He should be done in time for the Holidays…
November 15th, 2007 at 11:07 amAnother troll demeaning the office represenative of the people and then stealing away when the heat is turned on.

November 15th, 2007 at 12:05 pmI’d venture to say that if the door did indeed hit him anywhere on the way out, the door would have a fair to average chance of losing that battle. Have you seen the size of that guy?
November 15th, 2007 at 12:21 pmGive Dennis AssTurd a break. He’s only resigning to spend more time with the AssTurd family, circling the drain.
November 15th, 2007 at 12:26 pmDoes resignation obviate indictment?
November 15th, 2007 at 12:30 pmAnd yes, Denny’s also gay.
November 15th, 2007 at 1:04 pmWell, as of 3:30pm EST, there’s been nothing reported about Hastert’s resignation.
