Judiciary Committee strips telecom immunity from FISA bill.»

Greg Sargent reports that the “version of the FISA bill that was just reported out of the Judiciary Committee does not — repeat, does not — contain retroactive immunity for the telecom companies.” Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) had threatened to place a hold on any FISA bill that contained immunity. The Judiciary Committee’s action today renders moot the need for such a hold.

UPDATE: Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) issued the following statement:

“The FISA legislation reported out of the Senate Judiciary Committee today is a distinct improvement over the legislation passed by the Intelligence Committee last month. Though it still falls short in many areas, the bill includes several significant provisions that will better protect the privacy of innocent Americans. I applaud Senator Leahy for the package of changes he put together, and I appreciate my colleagues’ support in passing two additional amendments that I offered to further enhance privacy protections. I hope that, when the full Senate considers this issue, the Majority Leader brings up the Senate Judiciary Committee bill instead of the badly flawed Intelligence Committee alternative.

“There is still much to be done to fix this bill. In addition, the issue of retroactive immunity for companies that allegedly participated in the President’s warrantless wiretapping program will be fought out on the floor. I will continue to strongly oppose retroactive immunity when the full Senate considers this legislation.

“As a member of both the Intelligence and Judiciary Committees I have been fighting for months to pass a strong FISA bill that adequately protects the privacy of Americans who are not suspected of having done anything wrong. I will oppose and filibuster any bill on the Senate floor that fails this test or contains retroactive immunity.”

UPDATE II: Christy Hardin Smith explains what’s going on.

Good thing they got that troop funding out of the way. We wouldn’t 100,000 DoD employees to be laid off and our troops financially contrained on the battlefield.

Today’s leftist talking point (myth): “The DoD can transfer lots and lots of money between “less urgent” accounts to pay for the war! Yeah, that’s they ticket!”

Fact: Only $3.7 billion_ one week’s worth of funding for the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts_ is said to be available for transfer. And even doing that leaves the DoD in a bureaucratic nightmare.

  5. tom Says:

And even doing that leaves the DoD in a bureaucratic nightmare.

That might be worth holding up funding right there, pant-load.

A bureaucratic nightmare at DoD could be a good thing. After all, it couldn’t be any worse than the circle-jerk that GDumbya and Darth Cheney have been doing over at DoD for the past 5+ years.

Retroactive immunity is not only an absurdity but it is against flagrantly against our constitution. These telecoms, seduced by a leader drunk on his own power, blew it and violated the trust and privacy of their clients. For this, they will lose their shirts and deserve what they get for breaking a major law in this country. I have no pity on the telecoms who betrayed the people whom they serve.

  27. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre Says:

Taking a broad view of this topic of fascist corporatist spying on the American people by the Bush gangsters since they stole our Democracy in 2000, here are a few more words:

Broaden yourself beyond bird-watching and try the exciting new hobby, fascist-watching…

In the back of the last two issues of The Bird Watcher’s Digest, there were articles that suggested the filling your car’s trunk with a variety of natural history guides, including books on variously, insects, mammals, reptiles, wild flowers, shrubs, trees and even rocks and minerals and geology. All to equip you for any natural history questions of identification or understanding which might come up on your driving bird-watching field trips. The articles were trying to broaden the horizons of many traditional bird-watchers, who often watch only birds, and ignore other life forms.

This is all well and good, but I have a modest suggestion on how bird-watchers can really broaden their horizons: by getting into the exciting new world of fascist-watching. Fascists have been springing up in 21st century America like wild mushrooms after a heavy spring rainstorm. Actually, fascist-watching is very easy; you don’t need any binoculars, spotting scopes or field guides; you don’t even have to go outdoors at all; you simply turn on your cable or satellite-fed television set and you will see many fascists, squawking and screaming, fussing and fuming, sliming and smearing, jiving and lying. These fascists can be often spotted on three major corporate propaganda channels, Fox, MSNBC and CNN, which masquerade as “news” channels. If you care to go further afield (so to speak) you may visit some of the many so-called “religious” channels, which are mostly just spewing christo-fascist intolerance and hate for any and all that don’t agree with their every pronouncement… If this doesn’t satisfy your urges for fascist-watching, you can always turn to CSPAN most any afternoon and listen to Ms. Dana Perino, the cute new blonde secretary for the fascist Liar-in-Chief, El Supremo Busho.

As you will soon discover, there are many different kinds of fascists to be seen, beard, identified on television and then added to your “life list.” Christo-fascists, fearmongering-fascists, corporatist-fascists, imperial-fascists, neocon-fascists and war-fascists. Seen ‘em, identify ‘em, collect their images, take some field notes and soon you will be an expert fascist watcher. You may even spot a clucking chickenhawk or two. Then you can give ‘em “the bird”…

It’s all up to them. The people of this country have had enough and will show no mercy when it comes into their living rooms, their backyards, their telephones and computers……There’s a very palpable level of serious anger coursing through the veins of every american regardless of their party affiliation over being spied upon…this is a HUGE issue for both parties vis-a-vis their chances in 08.

I only have one personal factoid to insert which runs contrary to your comment about Ms. Perino, Bush’s “scapegoat du jour” and that is the descriptive adjective “cute”. I don’t happen to find anything cute or even remotely attractive with a young airhead spewing nonsense and drivel in an attempt to cover for her liar boss every day as though she is doing something relevant or even remotely credible. She’s chattel - like a piece of inocuous furnishing with nothing going on between the ears except that which she is “scripted” to narrate. Ew….Frankly, anyone who takes a job in which they will be required to lie to the american people daily and repeatedly needs a total psychiatric workup to see if they’re even capable of a modicum of sanity. Blond Looney Tune would be a more apt assessment of Ms. Dana Du Jour.

Loved your schtick though. Especially loved the “give ‘em the bird” to which I will add and then retire to have some fun watching the debate tonight……”Give em the bird; vote for a third”. A very serious contendor independent candidate is on the horizon, folks….stay tuned.

As the Senate Judiciary Committee prepared to debate the renewal of FISA revisions made in August, President Bush and his Republican allies in Congress are endorsing a unique double-standard when it comes to immunity for telecommunications firms. Within the United States, they argue, service providers such as AT&T and Verizon must cooperate with U.S. government demands for access to Americans’ electronic communications and should be immune from citizens’ lawsuits. But in China and elsewhere, as Republican reaction to this week’s Yahoo saga suggests, not so much.

Gates Jawbones Hill on War Spending
By The Associated Press – 2 hours ago

GATES’ THREAT: Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Thursday that unless Congress passes funding for the Iraq war within days, he will direct the Army and Marine Corps to begin developing plans to lay off employees and terminate contracts early next year.

Now, give the troll the benefit of bad reader comprehension: he suggests it says Gates only has enough cash for a couple months - yet the article only says that Gates “will begin developing plans” in a few months without the funding - not that he’ll run out of money at that time. Big difference.

Actually, the Democrats have a perfect solution to the war funding problem. Give Bush just enough money to keep the troops safe and cut all funding for the contractors. That will bring our troops home rapidly! And the Republicans won’t be able to say that we don’t “support the troops”. Nope, we just don’t support the mercenaries.

The present Secretary of Defense has great credibility. You haven’t proven otherwise. Offering an accurate assessment , as opposed to your 9AM-1AM TP.org leftist diatribe, doesn’t invalidate his assessment.

Since you seem intent on evading the issue, are you claiming that the department is posturing, that they can operate off of money grown on trees?

  77. Spudge Boy Says:

That is supposed to happen this weekend. I used to live in California and from what I hear the people of California are more than pissed at Diane.

But, the republocratic party is in control.

74% of America wants us the fu*k out of Iraq and 55% want Bush Impeached. That isn’t happening.

The number of CA Democrats that want DiFi impeached is high also, but that isn’t going to happen either.

We will just have to keep listening to the fascists like the dumb fu*k troll in this thread as they destroy our nation one piece at a time.

  78. barfly Says:

So, to review: Ul attempted to assert that the military only has enough cash for a couple months - yet the articles he cites both say something completely different. When this is pointed out to him, he ignores it.

Your assertion was just debunked. The articles say that Gates will begin making contingency plans in a few months, not (as you wrongfully asserted) that they will actually run out of money at this time. Why is that so hard for you to grok?

They’re running out of money, and quick. Of course, their will be minor differences of opinion by the accountants, but the fact is that DoD operations will start feeling the strain — very soon, if not now.

But everything is ok, according to us lefties. We just love being drama queens, regardless of the cost to DoD. It’s just all to jab at BushKKK.

  83. barfly Says:

from upthread: Today’s leftist talking point (myth): “The DoD can transfer lots and lots of money between “less urgent” accounts to pay for the war! Yeah, that’s they ticket!”

Fact: Only $3.7 billion_ one week’s worth of funding for the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts_ is said to be available for transfer. And even doing that leaves the DoD in a bureaucratic nightmare.

    Comment by Usual Leftist —

I think “Vichy France-ee”, as I like to call it, may be verboten as well. Methinks that TP is trying to exercise more control during their “pledge drive”. They can’t be pissing off potential donors.

  153. Jay Randal Says:

Bravo to Leahy and Feingold, but Feinstein, Schumer, and Lieberman will jump ship in full Senate vote probably or Bush will veto it anyways. I wish I could be more optimistic, but Dems caving in DC happens all the time.

  154. FearandSmear Says:

That drop in DOD funding hits a little too close to psyops home for some of our resident troll(s) methinks…

  155. Pursang Says:

My question is why after 4 years of this war/occupation are we still funding it with emergency funding bills? Isn’t it time for Bush/DOD to put this in the budget?

  156. Lefty Patriot Says:

shit, take all the money from the DOD, let the “secretary” have bake sales. There’s enough left ot get the troops home, where everybody wants them. the DOD needs no more money, they threw away what they had.

  157. marlow Says:

Usual Leftist. Another reptard bilge-rat with a rhetorical gimmick who’ll post a zillion comments and say nothing at all.

  158. Jeremy in Denver Says:

WHen I read that it took something like 3.7bln to keep the troops in iraq for one WEEK, according to UL, I stopped, and I stared at the number. If this number is true, this is all the reason I need to call for us out of Iraq YESTERDAY.

    3.7 bln per week.

At 80,000 per student for a typical 4 year public university, you could put 46,250 students through school for the cost of one week in Iraq.

At $50,000 per year per family, you could pay a decent living wage to 74,000 families for the cost of one week in Iraq.

At $26,000 per year for our budget, you could pay for our expenses and one hundred fourty two thousandthree hundred six other families like us! All for the cost of one week(!!!) in Iraq!

You could give over $3000 a week to every man, woman, and child in the city of Denver every week for the cost of fighting in Iraq.

If you ended the war right now, you could refund $641 per year to every man, woman, and child in America. $641 tax refund for you, your wife, and each child in your family.

THANK YOU, Usual Leftist, for showing in stark terms what a massive money sink this war is. Think about it. $3.7bln. PER WEEK. You could have a lottery where a MILLION winners took home $3700 for that gawd-awful number.

I couldn’t have sunk the Iraq war better if I tried!

  159. Jeremy in Denver Says:

Sorry about the bold, I must have missed a closing tag somewhere.

  160. marlow Says:

Yeah, but you see, there aren’t any screaming children, no body parts cartwheeling through the air, no AYRABS burning to death in shot-up cars. You see when you need to kill others to feel good about yourself, Jeremy, your plan is just one hell of a bummer. Lift people up instead of blowing them to bits? WASTE OF TIME.

  161. sacopenapa Says:

LET THE LAW BRAKERS, THE CONSTITUTION TRAMPLES TO FACE ACCAOUNTABILITY! YES MR. BUSH, ACCOUNTABILITY! SOON OR LATER IT WILL COME TO YOU AND THE REST OF THE WAR CRIMINALS!

  162. jerseyboyblue Says:

The Dems have stones after all! Litlle ones, but they’re there!
