Earlier this week, Newsweek announced that it is hiring DailyKos founder Markos Moulitsas as a contributor for the 2008 presidential campaign, offering occasional opinion pieces. Markos said, “Newsweek is ‘balancing’ me out with someone that should make heads on our side explode.”
Now we know who. Newsweek has announced it is hiring Karl Rove to become a Newsweek contributor. From a Newsweek press release:
“Newsweek has a long tradition of asking practitioners and opinion-makers to offer our readers the benefits of their experience in occasional opinion essays,” said Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham. “Whether one agrees or disagrees with Karl, there is no arguing that he has been a critical player in the political world with insights and experiences that we think will give our readers something unique.”
The right wing has been up in arms, claiming Markos’ hire is an example of liberal bias in the media. Last night on Hannity & Colmes, NPR’s Juan Williams claimed journalism is being hijacked by angry, offensive individuals making “extreme statements“:
All you’ve got to do is shout, say something on the blog that offends and attacks the other side, and suddenly, you have the credentials, and you’re said to be a journalist.
Watch it:
Steve Benen writes, “Juan Williams said this while answering questions from Sean Hannity, during an interview on Fox News. The irony was apparently lost on the host, the guest, and the audience. What a shame.” And along comes Karl Rove to save journalism. We anxiously await Fox News’ condemnation of the Rove hiring.

Uncle Karl will do fine, as long as there’s no math involved.
November 15th, 2007 at 1:43 pmHoly Fackwaddle. I’m thinking this says something about Markos gravitas or importance? At least, from some of his other writings I’ve seen, we know Karl isn’t as good a writer as Markos, much less substantiative. Wow.
November 15th, 2007 at 1:44 pmKos…you’re gonna have to gain some weight if you’re going to “balance out” that tub of poo!
November 15th, 2007 at 1:46 pmIs anyone calling Markos or Turdblossom “journalists” besides bloviating pundits like Juan Williams? They are being brought on to Newsweek to serve as bloviating pundits.
Looks like someone’s afraid of a little competition in the bloviation market!
November 15th, 2007 at 1:48 pmWait wait,

November 15th, 2007 at 1:54 pmDifference between Markos and Rove is that Markos is not a war criminal. Markos also has not outed any CIA agents.
Rove is a national shame. What about the missing emails? What about the torture? Shame.
GOP is the torture party.
November 15th, 2007 at 1:56 pmRogertwotimes forgets that facts and reason are like kryptonite to the likes of Turdblossom. It also forgets that the Rovian philosophy has dragged this country down like a few dozen anchors for seven long torturous years and Rove’s big genius head may have begun the death knoll for the GOP. I welcome his input to Newsweek. Let the rest of the country read for themselves what an asswipe KKKarl really is.

No go on this one Rx2. Markos may not have placed an incompentent boob in the WH, but he does bring to the table many years of progressive ideas. He has also created a very popular forum (Daily Kos) for fellow progressives to come together and communicate those ideas.
Rove is a hatchet man, Markos is a communicator. Markos is educated, Rove is a college dropout. Markos encourages communication and dialog, Rove smears those who deviate from his playbook. Markos is relevant, Rove is a loser. Markos sees a future for America, Rove only sees a future of republicans.
I would say Rove will have his hands full.

November 15th, 2007 at 2:18 pmJuan Williams is a major embarrassment, especially given how much his credibility is tied to his job with NPR. He’s another lightweight “liberal”, much like Hannity uses Colmes as a foil so he can pretend to have a balanced perspective. None of these programs would dare to allow someone like Glenn Greenwald or Joe Conason on as regular guests, because they’d constantly show the pundits up as buffoons.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:19 pmJuan Williams is Big Brother, working for State Sponsored TV.
Kos is smarter than Rove. I’m feeling pretty good.
Yeah, dumb Juan Williams missed the Irony. What a doofus.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:19 pmI’m with RUCerious and Bartlebee. As much as I dislike Newsweek and Rove, it’s fantastic to have Rove out front, in the light of day, for all to see the way this “man” thinks. His blathering will probably do more good for the progressive movement than the ads that are currently being marketed.
Have Rove for lunch, Markos.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:22 pmI’m sure no discussion of pending felonies was written into Rove’s contract.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:22 pmRoger Roger Rove attended six colleges and graduated from ZERO. As a political hack he’s not interested in politics, but smear campaigns.
Lets not forget his partisan skullduggery pushed Bush ratings to a new low. Heckuva Job Smearchitect!
November 15th, 2007 at 2:22 pmDoes no one else think this is amazing?
Of course Fox is going to make a stink over Kos getting into mainstream journalism. They’re irrelevant. I like the concept of two vastly opposed ideologies being presented in Newsweek. The liberal side of the argument is better, so let’s all roast some marshmallows and enjoy watching them trade barbs.
I bet Fareed Zakaria decks Rove before we hear the end of this. Isn’t this worth it, just for the CHANCE that such a thing could happen?
November 15th, 2007 at 2:23 pmHmmm…. Markos Moulitsas has been elevated to the same exalted plane as “The Architect” himself, Karl Rove by a prestigious Mainstream Media presence.
If that doesn’t result in thousands of wingnut heads exploding — particularly those at FARCE Noise Channel (and that includes you, Juan Williams) — then nothing on this planet will!
November 15th, 2007 at 2:24 pmWell, I’m never buying Newsweek again! Good luck, Newsweek! Because there’s way more liberals than “conservatives” in America.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:25 pmKKKarl calls this blog full of ‘vitriolic bloviators’.
Can KKKarl bloviate? He may look bovine, but, boy, can he bloviate.
Newsweak. heh.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:25 pmI’m seeing a lot of posts comparing Markos and Rove — and how one of them is far more qualified than the other for this job (who the “one” is depends on the political ideology of the poster).
It really doesn’t matter. I assume that both of them will be required to carry equal weight for Newsweek regardless of their past histories, and we can make our evaluation of the content once their columns start appearing.
I also assume that since they will be required to carry equal weight, that Markos will be paid the same as Rove?
November 15th, 2007 at 2:25 pmWe are going to be hearing ‘Nice Try’ quite a bit from Mocha Dick.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:27 pmIf Karl Rove were associated with food, I would stop eating. I won’t lay one red cent down for anything that pig and traitor to the United States is associated with. No thanks, Newsweek. They have got to be kidding.

At any rate, I’m tired of the corporate media’s cheap trick of having two pundits “have at it” while pretending that the “truth is probably somewhere in between”.

I had a great college teacher that brought up the issue of perspective and how it affects one’s perception. He used the example of viewing a piece of sculpture. If you view it from only one angle, you’ll obviously only have a two-dimensional view, whereas if you walk around the sculpture and view it from all sides you’ll obviously get a more accurate and truthful view.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:40 pmRove might eat Kos for dinner, but otherwise I will not read a damn thing Karl spews in Newsweek.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:40 pmI have a hunch that Juan won’t be troubled by Unca Karl’s extreme statements in the least. did I say “extreme statements”? I meant to say “refreshing honesty” or some crap like that. you’ll have to forgive me.

November 15th, 2007 at 2:45 pmI love how these azzwipes think that we have to be a “journalist” for our opinion to count for anything.
You’re time is up, pundits! Time to think about a second career!
November 15th, 2007 at 2:50 pmI do find it odd that Newsweek believes it must balance its news magazine by hiring a pudgy fascist like Karl Rove. He is no better than fatty Rush Limbaugh or skinny Ann Coulter.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:51 pmFirst thing Rove should bloviate about is how and why Plame was outed.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:52 pmI wouldn’t be too worried about KKKarl. The rightwing desperately needs to begin making coherent, rational arguments before they can ever hope to return to prominence. KKKarl does nothing of the sort. Nothing is going to change for the fascist rightwing in this country until they own up to their mistakes and acknowledge that the opposition has a LEGITIMATE argument and have a right to it. Rove won’t do any of that. It will still be the same old talking points, childish namecalling and intellectual dishonesty.
Good luck with that, Sh!t Flower, or whatever they call you. All you have left is to hope you can continue to buy the corrupt compliance of Democratic Judases like Schumer and Feinstein. It’s over for you and the other fascists, and some stupid little column in a dinosaur establishment media has-been ain’t gonna change that one bit.
November 15th, 2007 at 2:57 pmRove will be an angry hot air bag with slightly more intellect than Rush. Like most of the far right crowd, emotion will make his point not logic or reason.
Interesting Faux News for Nazis is commenting on fair and balanced presentation, I mean look at their line up where are the liberals and/or progressives? Only Juan Williams dares enter the dragon’s den.

I confess I haven’t read much of Rove’s punditry, but if he DOES sound anything like Limbaugh or Coulter, he’s just going to make Markos look like the clear-thinker of the two. However, Rove isn’t an idiot, and he will probably try to go more for reasoned arguments than strawman battles. After all, he doesn’t have to go for the “PAY ATTENTION TO ME!” approach like Limbaugh and Coulter do. I am going to be interested in reading both columns. At least, at first.
November 15th, 2007 at 3:14 pmWill KKKarl have a laptop in his cell? Will he be podcasting from the gallows? Is Newsweek now completely irrelevant?

November 15th, 2007 at 3:15 pmmissmolly > everything I have seen written by Karl Rove has been trashy like Limbaugh or Coulter slop, but he might have a ghost writer do the pieces for Newsweek magazine so lots of propaganda and less vileness.

Newsweek used to happily cheer for the USA imperial war on the Vietnamese people in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Why anyone would waste their time reading this propaganda rag is beyond me… I wonder what Mr. Daily Kos is thinking that he or the progressive movement wiill be gaining by his signing up with Newsweek? Putting a thin veneer of progressive lipstick on a corporatist pig?
November 15th, 2007 at 3:22 pmWhat entity owns Newsweek? I’d like to know so I can write it a letter pointing out that Karl Rove should be shunned, not given a megaphone.

This “he said, she said” format the American media likes to use so much, irritates me to no end. Sometimes, the truth simply doesn’t lie somewhere in between. Like in this case; Rove was the advisor to one of the worst US presidents in recent history (if not since the US was born).
This format also allows the media to be lazy, complacent and abdicate their responsibility to actually inform the audience. The excuse “but.. but… we present both sides” is no substitute for accurate, objective reporting.

If Newsweek wants to display a bias by setting up Markos to look bad and Rove to look good (and so far there isn’t any evidence they plan to do this), let ‘em.
The proof of the pudding is in the eating. And the proof of the punditry is in the writing. It will be the ideas that matter in the end.
November 15th, 2007 at 4:56 pmAs revolting it will be to see Rove’s name in my Newsweek magazine, I am taking some consolation in a couple of things:
November 15th, 2007 at 5:37 pmMarkos Moulitsas is a force to be dealt with; he is smart, his ideas are cogent, and he can write well.
Karl Rove already has a reputation of dubious distinction; no doubt he is smart, but people know he is cunning and devious. I think his words will be read through a prism of skepticism, whereas Kos is open.
toasterhead: “I’ve always thought of Williams as an NPR conservative rather than a Fox liberal. All perspective, I guess.”
Who would be the NPR liberals? Mara Lisson, who goes on FOX and argues that Democrats are creeps, or Gwen Ifill, who goes to barbecues at her good friend Condi Rice’s house and then lobs her big fat softballs in interviews?
November 15th, 2007 at 5:55 pmMarkos can handle that blob. All Rove knows how to do is smear, and Markos will just kill him with facts.

November 15th, 2007 at 6:43 pmThe management of Newsweek knew before the 2004 election that the President was lying about the Plame affair and that Karl Rove had disclosed her occupation to one of their correspondents. They evidently didn’t think that the voting public needed to know this before making an informed voting decision.
That’s all you need to know about the trustworthiness and honor of the publication known as Newsweek.
November 15th, 2007 at 6:48 pmMarkos will write his own column.
Karl Rove will have an assistant do it.
Newsweek knows full well that they’re getting one seasoned political writer and one nameless intern.
November 15th, 2007 at 7:09 pm“Whether one agrees or disagrees with Karl, there is no arguing that he has been a critical player in the political world with insights and experiences that we think will give our readers something unique.â€
I have two words to say about that:
Roy. Cohn.
Meanwhile I have a prediction I’d like to share. I hope someone remembers this when it happens, because my prediction is so sure, it almost feels preordained. At some point. Rove is going to say something so monumentally false, Markos will have no moral option but to call him on it. Newsweek will hem and haw about honoring Markos’ content, Markos will then spill the backstage drama over at Dailykos, and Newsweek will conveniently let him go. They will claim they don’t allow their journalists or columnists to denigrate their other jornalists or columnists anywhere in public, even if it’s the journalist/columnist’s own blog. It’ll all be a load of nonsense, but it will be a deliberate attempt to make Markos, and by extension the blogging/netroots community, look like petulant WATBs. Then, adding insult to injury, in order to restore “balance,†they will hire a supposedly progressive columnist at least 27 steps to the right of Markos. How un-Marloslike will this new columnist be? If we’re lucky(!) it’ll be Alan Colmes or someone of his ilk.
November 15th, 2007 at 7:35 pmSo in order to “balance” out a liberal blogger writing editorials, they hire Bush’s former mouthpiece and propagandist? I take it they couldn’t find any intelligent people who would defend Bush that WEREN’T on the Bush payroll.
The fact that they would equate an independant liberal blogger with a paid Bush shill is mind boggling.
November 15th, 2007 at 11:20 pmI left this comment on the CarpetBagger as well…but I almost went through the roof of my car this morning when I heard this, so it bears repeating (for me, at any rate):
November 16th, 2007 at 1:20 amMr Journalist Juan Williams on NPR Morning edition this morning “ I know that there has been questions raised about whether the Clinton campaign has already been sending messages to CNN and to Blitzer to say ‘you know, you have to be impartial‘”
Apparently, yesterdays debunking of this rumor and Wolf’s denial didn’t reach his ears since he was too busy hanging out with the real journalists on Fox News Channel
Drives me nuts to hear him lecturing others on what journalism is
I’ll make my talking point brief: The only good Rove is a Dead Rove.

November 16th, 2007 at 6:57 pmAs if there ever was a journalist at Fox…
Furthermore, there is no “far-left” in the USA - the country has veered so far to the right that what it calls the “left” is right-of-center and what it calls the “far-left” is center everywhere else.
