State Dept drops plan to force diplomats to Iraq.»

Last month, the State Department announced that it would order “U.S. diplomats to take posts in Iraq next year” in “forced assignments.” The announcement was met with “anger and frustration” by several hundred diplomats. The AP reports that the State Department has now dropped the plan because “volunteers have filled all 48 vacant positions.”

  2. Chris L Says:

So, they were forcing people to before just getting volunteers? Any info on who volunteered?

That’s one small victory for humanity!

Did Condi throw a hissy fit then go talk to her husband who perhaps consoled her ?

  5. Frosty Cupcake Says:

    Chris:

Normally they do staff embassies on a volunteer basis, but they were short on volunteers for Iraq.

    (Big surprise.)

Maybe they came up with additional incentives to get people to volunteer?

There is always something underhanded involved in anything this administration does. I wonder what happened to get 48 to jump into the lions den?

Well if the The U.S. Consulate General in Amsterdam is in need of volunteers, they should give me a call!

    Volunteers?

First they had to force people to go - now they have volunteers?
    What happened?
I NEVER take the word of anyone in the Bush government on face value.

Send Condi R. there. She won’t be missed, except by her boyfriend George. Laura B. certainly won’t miss having the competition for her man hanging around all the time. Now all Laura needs to do is get Bush off of Alberto G., and Rove off of Bush, and Gannon’s still lurking, and, well, sorry Laura, your man is just a whore so you’ll have to get used to it.

    Involuntary volunteers.

Way ta go, team!! Way to take one for Commander Guy!!

  14. bilbobaggins Says:

They realized they had to abandon the plan when they heard the giant sucking sound of civil servants leaving the State Department.

    Way to go Condi!

  15. VerbalKint Says:

I guarantee that some sort of incentives were used to fill the slots. The incentives may be large cash bonuses, but there might also be other incentives of a more unsavory nature.

Like them’s that didn’t volunteer have to sleep with Condi?

  17. pete Says:

My guess is that they lowered the standards like they’ve done for the military. All they have to do is hire moronic sycophants too pleased with the “honor” to read the fine print.

  18. theswan Says:

It’s another case of shoot first and ask who will volunteer later.

Republicans just react. There is no thought process in the intermediary.
Heck of a process. Works never.

What, you think it’s good news that Americans that don’t want to be slaughtered in a useless war don’t deserve protection? Wow, you’re one sick little f**k tracy!

  20. DrGail Says:

I’m inherently suspicious of this remarkable turnaround. My immediate reaction was that, rather than face the withering criticism and questions regarding forcing diplomats to go to Iraq, they just decided to leave those positions “open”.

After all, it’s not like exercising any diplomacy in Iraq is important or anything.

  21. Doc Rock Says:

Mr. Chairman could we have a recount?

  22. Jay Randal Says:

Must have agreed to pay the so-called volunteers a lot of money.
