State Dept IG relinquishes increased authority.

After yesterday agreeing to recuse himself from State Department investigations involving Blackwater, Inspector General Howard Krongard today gave up “his role in looking into corruption allegations involving the construction of the new U.S. embassy in Baghdad.” The AP reports:

Despite the fact that he has now recused himself from the State Department’s two main internal investigations in Iraq and has come under heavy pressure to resign, Krongard has not offered to step down and is, for the moment, continuing as the inspector general, McCormack told reporters. He did not, however, offer Krongard a ringing endorsement.

“He is still doing his work as inspector general,” McCormack said. “Obviously, if there weren’t support for his doing his job as inspector general, then he wouldn’t be doing that job.”

His job is to investigate nothing… and he’s doing a damn fine job of it.

  2. thebobh says:

    heckuva job kronnie :)

  3. Zimzone says:

Inspector General means that, generally, he is expected to inspect…something; maybe his brother?

  4. Buckie Boy says:

Wow, Menehune and thebobh beat me to it… :-)

Was gonna do both of those. Like minds I guess.

  5. StratRat says:

What he should have said: “Can’t you people just get used to the graft, corruption, incompetence, and cronyism that is the cornerstone of this administration?”.

  6. Frosty Cupcake says:

Why should he resign? He’s doing exactly what Bush wants him to do. Nothing. It’s like that throughout the Bush government. Make sure that no one ever does anything valid or worthwhile for the American people.

  7. ralph the wonder llama says:

Frosty’s right. He’s doing exactly what he was expected to do.

This is what Republican government IS. No wonder they claim people are foolish to look to the government to solve problems. People need to BE in government in order for government to work for them. Oh, and they need to be Republican.

Cookie, Cookie, Cookie — do you really expect us to believe that you had NO IDEA that your brother was going to join the Advisory Board of Blackwater and that is why you whitewashed your investigations?

    Time to get buzzing, Cookie.

  9. For Truth says:

As soon as he makes a phone call to himself during a break and finds out what a lousy job he’s been doing, he’ll submit his resignation.

These people are just effing blatant!!

    Unbelieveable!!

Buzzy has already gone on record that Cookie was a naughty boy yesterday:

this would be comic — if it were
    not entirely tragic. “cookie” should
be asked to resign, or face criminal
charges for lying under oath — here’s
my case, in about two minutes of
    youtube (low quality) video-feed. re-
member, “buzzy” — his brother, just last
night, told TPM muck that he definitievly
DID tell cookie he was on eirk prince’s advisory
board, and at least two months ago — long before
    the false testimony, of yesterday.

the video of krongard, really is damning.

    forget the u.s.c. provisions preventing
undisclosed conflicts of interest — felony,
federal perjury charges will likely now stick. . .

he is not even remotely as convincing a
liar as alberto gonzales was — he needs to
tender his resignation, or face indictment.

It wasn’t much of an investigation, but the cookies were really good.

  15. Zimzone says:

But now that he has a free pass to Bush’s Christmas party he’s officially ‘made it’.

    Is Jeff Gannon invited?

    KKKarl?

    Gonzo?

    Issa is a pissa…

  16. RUCerious says:

    No shame. None. Whatsoever.

  17. boreas says:

Here’s what happens now: in the unlikely event that the State Department’s IG Office investigates anything Krongard will recuse himself and assign the task to a deputy. Said deputy will then have the benefit of much “discrete guidance” from his boss.

By the way, what does it say about these wingnuts that they tend to adopt nicknames like “Cookie” or “Scooter” or… “Turd Blossom”?

    Is Jeff Gannon invited?

    Comment by Zimzone — November 15, 2007 @ 1:56 pm

My guess is that Jeffy Lube isn’t officially invited, but he will wind up crashing. He’ll probably use the rear entrance.

Oh no! I did not say that!

  19. RUCerious says:

He’ll probably use the rear entrance…
    The service entrance for sure.

  20. Art says:

“He is still doing his work as inspector general,”

No… He is not. Not when he recuses himself from his “work”.

That is the point. He should resign.

  21. gharlane says:

    heckuva job kronnie :)

    Comment by thebobh — November 15, 2007 @ 1:13 pm

    Beat me to it :)

Except I would have said “heckuva job cookie”

“Buzzy” and “Cookie.” Unbelievable. But then, with Scooter, and let’s not forget Freddo…
