Reid moves to block recess appointments over break.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) put out a statement today saying that he will hold pro forma sessions over Thanksgiving break in order to prevent President Bush from using the congressional vacation to recess appoint controversial nominees. For pro forma sessions, Reid would “call the chamber into nonvoting sessions every three days — thus doing away with an extended recess.”

Finally a move from the Democrats to stop the usurping of the Constitution.

  2. Zappatero Says:

hey, only a year after we voted them in to stop Bush.....not bad!

  3. VerbalKint Says:

Now watch the pouting crybaby Bush throw a hissy fit.

  4. Buckie Boy Says:

Good move, stop this War Criminal from appointing anymore fascist, corrupt, cronies into government (what a joke) positions.

  5. Veritas Says:

Finally, the Dems are using a bit of political creativity to thwart the Emperor! Now watch his acting out in public!

  6. RUCerious Says:

    Good move Harry,

    Chymp, you're in check.

  7. Bushie Says:

I will believe it after it happens. Der Führer will probably appoint by executive fiat anyway.

  8. Menehune Says:

First real thing you've done Harry. Keep it up!

  9. Jay Randal Says:

Senator Reid > since you were unable to strong arm Schumer and Feinstein to block Mukasey as AG, and allowed Dodd to vote with GOPers today, thus it is very difficult to believe you any longer.

  10. old_hack Says:

    Whats Reid's notion on Impeachment?

  11. Art Says:

I hope he really does it.

  12. nanlichi Says:

There's going to be some shit flinging, petulant hooting fits now!

  13. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

What did Dodd vote with the GOP on today?

  14. Blue Stater Says:

It's really sad that Reid needs to resort to what are really procedural tricks to prevent this president from making these appointments, but that is what needs to be done as this president has already rammed some real doozies in during recess. I haven't been to happy with Harry this past year (or Nancy) as they have been way too timid in confronting this 24% approval president, but on this one I will say good job.

  15. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Now, w/ Feingold threatening to fillibuster over the telecomm immunity issue, Feinstein voting AGAINST immunity, and Reid showing some testicles, let's see if Congress' numbers start to climb a little.

"... but on this one I will say good job."

Procedural tricks? It never bothers the GOOPers to pull this sort of nonsense. What's good for the goose...

  17. OxyCon Says:

    There is a God!
Bout freaking time this was done. This is how you deal with arrogant, egomaniacal authoratarians like Bush...you take their toys away and send them to their rooms without dinner.
Now he's going to have to play nice or he doesn't get what he wants.

  18. Blue Stater Says:

I agree this is necessary, that's what I said, Bush has driven the Senate to having to do this because everyone knows he can't be trusted to not put in people who could never actually be confirmed otherwise.

  19. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Most attitudes here mirror my own. This is a good move, and a long overdue first step toward curbing the excesses of Chimpy. But I'll believe it when I see it. Harry Reid has squandered a lot of trust in his leadership.

  20. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Now, if we see some Contempt of Congress citations come down the pipe... that will be a different story.

  21. Leftside Annie Says:

Good for Harry - I urge everyone to call his office and let him know that we really LIKE this idea.

  23. greggp Says:

That's all well and good, but Harry should also do the same thing at the end of the year, during the Christmas - New Years period. In order for this to mean anything, there has to be no recess at all untill 2009. It would make no sense to prevent a recess appointment now, only to have it happen 4 weeks from now.

  24. Pete Bogs Says:

Republicants aren't going to like missing out on vacation time, I can tell you! screw 'em...

  25. Bobwurst Says:

Won't the boy king just make acting appointments? What's congress going to do then, besides write strongly worded letters expressing the sense of the Senate, blah blah blah.

  26. Race Condition Says:

Dodd voted with the GOP today? On what? Dodd has so far been a lone "man of action" in a field of "action figures", so I'm very curious to hear about this.

  27. Ditch Mitch KY Says:

Praise the Lord. Reid will call the Senate into session over break to prevent Bush's recess appointment of his god awful homophobic candidate for Surgeon General. Thanks Harry.
