Last night on Fox News’s The O’Reilly Factor, stand-in host Laura Ingraham was incredulous that Sen. Chris Dodd (D-CT) had the audacity to speak Spanish during Thursday’s CNN presidential debate. “What’s with Chris Dodd speaking Spanish?” she asked. “Speaking Spanish!” Watch it:
At one point in last night’s debate, Dodd said, “Bienvenidos tambien” (Welcome).
Do you know how smart it is to know how to speak Spanish, and let others know?
November 17th, 2007 at 9:31 amIt was a language Ingraham did not understand, therefore it is bad.
November 17th, 2007 at 9:33 amConsider the comedy show “Fox News’s The O’Reilly Factor” where they have spent the last seven years trying to convince America what’s really wrong with America (after 7 long years of failed Republican policy) is Michael Moore, the Dixie Chicks, Al Gore, and the left’s war on Christmas.

November 17th, 2007 at 10:17 amI agree completely with Juan C.
My whole life I’ve spoken English only. These days however, I’m taking lessons in Spanish. I live in South-Central Texas, so it’s only practical to be multi-lingual. Also, I prefer to understand what’s being spoken to me, instead of being confused, “out of the loop”, if you will, because I don’t understand what’s being said.
I really believe I’m improving myself as a person by being multi-lingual. I have several Hispanic friends and co-workers who speak both English & Spanish. If they can do it, I can do it. I’ll thank myself later. My late grandfather came to South Texas from Chicago in the 1920’s. He’s as white bread as they come, and didn’t know a lick of Espanol. It took him several years, but he came to be fluent in Spanish. It rolled off his tongue, beautifully.
Enhance yourselves, folks. Lean to be multi-lingual!

I want Obama and Clinton beating up on each other!”

Ingraham has been telling us for years that things are going well and great in Iraq…that’s an issue to the voters, specially when facts do not add up to her claims,it is an issue more important than a Senator speaks another language.

Sen. Dodd USED his Spanish ability in service to his country in the Peace Corps.
The current corrupt, criminal president has never used his Spanish for anything other than political self-aggrandizement!
November 17th, 2007 at 10:56 amIn the context of her comments on why Dodd and others she mentioned were even on stage, her comment about Dodd speaking Spanish was to disqualify him or demote him from the other candidates because he was speaking Spanish.
I never understood why the news shows brought on radio personalities as if they were experts on politics or current events. I guess that clip of Laura Ingraham completely talking over the other guest, repeating the same line multiple times just to keep her mike open and then slamming Dodd for speaking Spanish was the reason news shows hire radio personalities- entertainment, not news.

I have no problem with Dodd speaking Spanish as long as he remembers he is a US Senator and NOT a representative for Mexico or any other nation.
November 17th, 2007 at 11:15 amI have always believed that many of the problems Americans see in the world would be reduced in perceived magnitude if we just learned how to pronounce the names of foreign countries and cities in the same language the natives there use. You would be amazed at how many of those names have been changed for our convenience. Being multi-lingual is not a sin, nor is it a disqualifier for high office. People who want everyone to speak English only are simply xenophobes with no desire to learn about the rest of the world. They just want the rest of the world to love the USA and to be just like us. They believe that the rest of the world is a threat to us because our ignorant xenophobes can’t understand what they’re saying. Why should the rest of the world agree with people like that?
November 17th, 2007 at 11:17 amfunny how everyone in smaller countries knows how to speak a few languages? This is a sign of concern for other people and a willingness to communicate right?
November 17th, 2007 at 11:24 amwhat exactly is the problem? I bet she thinks it is neat the newt speaks Spanish. But is that because he is one of the ruling class and can do what he wants?
Poor ingrahamsandwich. wonder what language her relatives spoke when they came to Vespucciland?
54 — I think you are onto something there, Wayne. It is amazing how many chickenhawks who “support our troops” like to spout off about things in Eye-rack and Eye-ran. I generally tune them out — if they can’t even pronounce the names of the countries properly, why should I think that they have anything else of value to offer?
November 17th, 2007 at 11:30 amMost other countries believe that it is important to understand the languages of neighboring countries. Most Europeans have a second and even third language. Indeed, when I traveled overseas, there was a lot of resentment for the failure of Americans to have any second language. I have heard too many of my fellow citizens say that the rest of the world should learn our language. The arrogance explains much.

November 17th, 2007 at 12:23 pmmudsharks buddy: Spanish words were being spoken by the native Florida indians when the French attempted a settlement in 1563. Because the indians traded foods and goods with different tribes, they spoke several different dialects which probably made learning Spanish and French relatively easy.
November 17th, 2007 at 12:41 pmBecause Dodd spoke two words in a foreign tongue? TWO WORDS? This is worth even one second of commentary by a TV talking head?
How about Bush, who said stupid things like “buenos nachos” to his audiences on the campaign trail or when he called the Spanish Prime Minister, “Mr. Goose” (addressing him as “Mr. Ansar” which means Mr. goose instead of “Mr. Aznar”). Or when Bush told Tony Blair that the problem with the French is that they have no word for “entrepreneur”.

November 17th, 2007 at 2:58 pmExcept, as we all know, the Tower of Babel is a myth. As in a work of fiction.
If the reichwingers’ point is that we should all speak one language, maybe that should be Spanish; it happens to be spoken in more countries, and by more native speakers, than English.
Or maybe it should be Mandarin. It’s spoken by even more people than English and Spanish put together.
November 17th, 2007 at 2:58 pmAs Spanish becomes more widely spoken in the US, it’s only to be expected that politicians will eventually pick it up, in order to appeal to their Spanish-speaking voters.

November 18th, 2007 at 11:46 amThe person who works best from my instruction, then ends up being the point person I go to to get the message out to the others. This now makes a normal heirarchy. He then gets more privilege in your eyes, and thusly amasses gravitas amongst the workers and others (vendors, contractors.) He becomes the go to guy, even instead of you to get the job done. He is either rewarded by you, or offered a better job at co X who has noticed his ability to get the others on point. Therefore, he ends up trashing your whole company, as all the other workers want to join him, because he does not insult them, nor does he keep them down, as he uses a modicum of respect for the workers in his charge, and he rewards them accordingly. This in turn fosters a good working environment, and a successful company, due to employees now WANTING to do good work and having a true remuneration structure. You then go out of business, and Voila’ we have market forces of employees working its wonderful magic.
Take it to the next level for unions, etc.
So the America hating xenophobes, who are part of the RepubliCON Fascist take0no-prisoners Kill America at all costs crowd would:
1) Turn the people wanting to emigrate here
2) Turn dollars away that want to invest here, by crippling the dollar with ridiculous burden of borrowing, which cripples the viability of the dollar
3) Invade other soverign nations, in their unending need for self-flagellation, that ALL demagogueries require.
4) Suck every bit of power and goodness from the thing called the Constitution, by circumventing any and every claim, Amendment, clause, codicil, law or statute.
There simply needs to be something we can pour on those we find to be this Anti-American, such that they melt, just like the Wicked Witch. Simply, disgusting, un-Americans.
November 18th, 2007 at 11:58 amThat’s right, if you speak Spanish as a first language, you are less of an American, regardless of if you are a citizen or not.
Right?
It’s just like you’re not as American if you are black. Let’s face it, only white, English-speaking Americans are truly American and everybody else is just here on our dime…
Right?
I think the racist logic goes something like that…
November 18th, 2007 at 1:55 pmI have no problem with Dodd speaking Spanish as long as he remembers he is a US Senator and NOT a representative for Mexico or any other nation.

I didn’t realize speaking a second language made someone prone to amnesia. Do you think Senator Dodd is likely to forget that he’s from the United States and is a member of the Senate, just because he spoke three words in a second language?
We’d better have a second anvil standing by, just in case.
