In his debut column in Newsweek today, former White House adviser Karl Rove instructs the GOP presidential candidates on how to beat Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY), whom he describes as “hard and brittle.” He encourages them to distances themselves from the “low approval rates of the Republican president” (although he conveniently fails to mention President Bush by name):
Every presidential election is about change and the future, not the past. So show them who you are in a way that gives the American people hope, optimism and insight. That’s the best antidote to the low approval rates of the Republican president. [...]
Kos, on the other hand, encourages the Democratic candidates to continue reminding voters that “that the Republican platform and Bush’s record are one and the same”:
When Bush chose a head for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, did he select a competent administrator experienced in disaster management? No, he appointed Mike Brown, an attorney previously fired as the “judges and stewards commissioner” of the International Arabian Horse Association for gross mismanagement. He was an incompetent horse lawyer, yet Bush deemed him capable of running the nation’s top disaster relief agency. Reagan, who once said, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help’,” might have approved the choice, but the abandoned residents of the Gulf Coast would undoubtedly beg to differ.
Not even KKKKarl can save this totally collapsed GOP! The GOP IS this white house regardless of how they profess to the contrary. It’s the precise same headset as evidenced by the last Repuke congress and the GOP members in this congress who are “obstructionists”.
It’s over for the GOP, thank God! A repuke won’t see the inside of the white house for at least another century at this rate.
All anyone has to do is look at the Republican sickos in Congress who everyday make total buffoons of themselves and further tank their party.
November 18th, 2007 at 2:20 pmAll you have to do to remind folks about how this Republican establishment takes care of them is say one word: KATRINA!!!
November 18th, 2007 at 2:21 pmThat’s the best antidote to the low approval rates of the Republican president.
With that one euphemism, Rove proves he is the pussy that all the guys on the football team in high school always said he was.
Dirty tricks don’t change that. It might make you rich, but it doesn’t change who you are.
November 18th, 2007 at 2:26 pmOMG, Newsweek hired Karl Rove as a columnist. Shit, I guess that means I have to cancel my subscription. I subscribed because Newsweek was the only weekly magazine that was fairly free of Republiscum influence.
In a way, though, Rove’s column is hilarious. Anyone who reads it will say, “should we take advice from the man who made the Republican president what he is today”?
November 18th, 2007 at 2:26 pmRove’s comment reminds me of that old joke about the German fella on the phone to his friend in NY after returning home.
“So, how do you like it back in Berlin?”
“It’s great to be home, but I’ll tell ya, it’s impossible to find a decent bagel here.”
“Well, who’s fault is that…”
November 18th, 2007 at 2:29 pmThey hired Rove to “balance” the columns by Kos. Kos is like most of us……strives to be honest, ethical, and moral. So they got Rove to be the lying, immoral, corrupt columnist.
November 18th, 2007 at 2:36 pmCan Rudy really spin 9/11 into something uplifting and hopeful? Well Rudy will have to I guess because 9/11 is all he has? Well and that he is not a Clinton and Rove said on NPR that not being Clinton is not enough to win on.
November 18th, 2007 at 2:41 pmCan any of them on the right or left hold out hope without strings attached to a corporate interest? I am no fan of the “front runners “on either side. I want a leader that is about the people here in this country and about the people worldwide (we rather ship them food them help them grow it).
We need more unions to raise wages here at home, without organized labor we are going to see an increase the brain drain. We need the trade agreements overhauled I will be willing to pay more if I make more. See how that works?
We need to take back the power from the few and restore it to the many.
The GOP won’t be able to separate itself from the disastrous rule of Bush. They will be smashed in the election. The sad thing is that I doubt the Democrats have the brains, guts, or moral authority to put this country back together.
November 18th, 2007 at 2:47 pmHit the Impeach button and flush… Repeat.
November 18th, 2007 at 3:04 pm“…the best antidote to the low approval rates…” – – Rates? Rove is not only a social cretin, he’s a faux literate.

Translation from wingnutian: the economy’s on the brink of a recession, we’re stuck in a quagmire even worse the LBJ’s worst nightmare, the world sees us as hypocritical bullies, and the Chinese are pulling back from investing in our economy.
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
November 18th, 2007 at 3:09 pmRove:” Every presidential election is about change and the future, not the past..].
Good words, but the reality is GOP party is refusing any ‘forward’ change…they are moving backward instead.
Looking at their votes in the Senate and Congress…do you see any change?!..not one inch.
How about the Republican presidential candidates?..are they moving forward?.not one inch..they are moving backward by allowing evangelicals to run their base.
When it comes to wars..I don’t see any change…
All GOP presidential candidates, except of Ron Paul are calling for more wars, specially the top GOP runner Giuliani, who already surrounded himself with people calling for World War IV, like Norman Podhoretz and others.
So,where is the change, regarding war and peace, energy planning, deficit and spending, health, nepotism, corrupt election system vs. reforms…etc. etc.?
November 18th, 2007 at 3:15 pmWhere to begin?
Karl Rove is one of the men who compromised our CIA intelligence operation into Iran’s nuclear development program and he is rewarded by Newsweek by giving Rove a forum to further undermine our nation with his dirty deeds.
Why Newsweek is helping Rove refresh his coffers in this manner is beyond belief.
Kos, on the other hand, is a breath of fresh air.
November 18th, 2007 at 3:15 pm“but now he dade.”

Your dollar is in the shithole. Your economy is already tanking due to the prime rate b.s. Your debt is skyrocketing to alltime high relative to GDP. Your trade deficit is the highest it has ever been. You aren’t funding your insane wars in the least so your debt will continue to go up, soon to exceed $10 trillion. Your unemployment is low but you’ve outsourced high paying jobs & replaced them with burger flippers. You have millions without healthcare, millions without food and millions soon to be homeless as they can’t pay their mortgages or afford the drop in value in their highly leveraged houses. Yup, par for the Republican course because all of the multi-millionaires are doing just fine.
November 18th, 2007 at 3:21 pm“So show them who you are in a way that gives the American people hope, optimism and insight.â€
Exactly what part of the Republican platform is Turd Blossom speaking about here? Hope? Optimism? Insight? Does the Turd actually believe that any part of the Republican platform posseses any of these traights? What a buffoon. Threre is no way on earth that the party of hate and division can wrap their little minds around this concept. During my lifetime, the Republican party has always stood for the party of Big Business and has always, I repeat always, had a pathological love affair with the past and the way things used to be. They abhor change. And that is why the world is about to leave them behind in the dust bin of history.
November 18th, 2007 at 3:26 pmLeave it to the Republicriminals. There is no fact they can’t lie about.
Wouldn’t it be terrific to see a live debate between Markos and Rove. Not the kind of “debate” the networks put on between the candidates mind you. I mean a real debate where each has to answer the same question in a given amount of time. I have a feeling that Rove would excel at demonstrating the dishonesty and illogic of his message.

We are, however, being overrun by delusional reactionary bigots like yourself. Hopefully after the next election we’ll send you freaks to the margins of society where you belong.
November 18th, 2007 at 3:46 pmThe words of Colin Powell are ringing prophetic:
If you break it, you’ve bought it.
The Republicans won’t shake the stain of this President. And Karl will forever be the ‘Architect’.
November 18th, 2007 at 3:47 pmNot to mention it’s Roves influence that took an otherwise benign dolt and elevated him into the Presidency, with the attendant custerfluck of war, subversion of our Constitution, and economic collapse. Uh… thanks, you pig-faced little traitor.
November 18th, 2007 at 3:49 pmCommunism? Puh-leese. I dare our trolls to name a single prominent American who proposes anything resembling communism. I’ll save you the trouble; there are none. In fact, most of the people derided as “leftists” are more conservative than the reckless criminals in charge of our government.
Most of those who oppose the neocons want a return to the values and ideals that once made our nation great. I would say that calls for oversight, responsibility, caution, and integrity are decidedly conservative. Heck, if the neocons exhibited genuine conservative values the U.S. wouldn’t be in such peril.
Cries of “communism” and “socialism” merely serve to demonstrate the pitiful ignorance of the 24%ers. Perhaps they could do us all a favor and read Webster’s Dictionary before they throw around words?

November 18th, 2007 at 4:14 pmMy words to Karl:
“That’s the best antidote to the low approval rates of the Republican president.”
Karl. Buddy. His name is Bush. George W. Bush. You helped put him there remember. You did a good job. You catapulted the propaganda. Right out of the park. You and George W. Bush. The Big W. Your creation. You’re “The Architect” remember. The guy with poll numbers lower than Nixon is your guy. “The Republican President” who you are trying to sneak around is the horse you rode in on and it says a lot that now you don’t remember his name. George W. Bush, Karl. He did everything you told him to Karl. Don’t forsake him now.

Yeah. If the truth be told, something few trolls or neocons can do, most of the world sees the U.S. as a “rogue state”.
November 18th, 2007 at 5:01 pmFirst we’re to believe Bush (America’s dumbest politician) is a President, now we are supposed to believe Karl Rove (who brought us the politics of division) is a “journalist?” Next thing you know they’ll be asking us to forget it was bin Laden and not Saddam Hussein who killed Americans on US soil.

Don’t forget “afraid”. Much of the world is holding it’s breath and PRAYING that we change course before the neocons can make an even bigger mess. It can’t come too soon. In fact, it will take a series of miracles to restore our reputation in the lifetime of anyone old enough to vote.

November 18th, 2007 at 6:04 pmbtw Frank is the same douchebag who had this to say regarding the U.S. transferring Maher Arer, an innocent Canadian, to Syria for torture…
I think we simply grew up after the 9/11. We lost our infantile innocence, our naive faith in the constitution, and faced the fact that the world is an ugly, dog-eat-dog place where the strongest – not the most ideologically pure – will survive. Survival is the ultimate ideology and victory is the absence of defeat.
In Frank’s America it’s ok to send people to countries who you’ve deemed are evil and let them do whatever they wish. That’s all part of a country growing up and facing reality. Does anyone really want to live in a country such as Frank describes?

Hi BART
When I see words like; “communist”, “leftist”, or “secular progressive” used as curses I’m reminded of the words of R.A. Heinlein:
“A wise man can’t be insulted. The truth can only instruct and lies are unworthy of a reply”.
Of course this ignores the fact that, in America today, there are no “communists” or “leftists”. And “secular progressive” describes the highest ideals of our culture.
Why does BillO hate the “Founding Fathers”?
November 18th, 2007 at 6:49 pmI recall the 2004 Bush election mantra being “stay the course.” How is this about change and the future? mr. rove conveniently changes the rules as he goes along. There are no unalterable election formulas. That is just bull about change and the future.
This election is about what a complete disasters he and his boss were and are.

Another inane comment by the resident loon Francine. The economy is only booming for the privileged few. For the rest of us it’s in the sewer and soon to be even worse. Not being “overrun” by muslims. What’s the matter Francine, afraid of the muslims? But your best comment was “and the world sees us as a strong nation willing to defend herself by any means necessary”. What planet are you living on loon Francine. The world hates us. They see us as a bunch of Nation Building Bullies trying to take over the world. We didn’t defend ourselves. If we had, we would have truly gone after Osama rather than allowing him to get away in Tora Bora. We “defended ourselves” by invading a third rate country without the means to defend themselves. Way to go Bully America!

It appears that the troll did not even bother reading the article that he linked.
Al Gore:
“I don’t think we should allow anything to diminish our focus on the necessity for avenging the 3,000 Americans who were murdered and dismantling that network of terrorists that we know were responsible for it. The fact that we don’t know where they are should not cause us to focus instead on some other enemy whose location may be easier to identify.”
Nevertheless, President Bush is telling us that America’s most urgent requirement of the moment right now is not to redouble our efforts against Al Qaida, not to stabilize the nation of Afghanistan after driving his host government from power, even as Al Qaida members slip back across the border to set up in Afghanistan again.
Rather, he is telling us that our most urgent task right now is to shift our focus and concentrate on immediately launching a new war against Saddam Hussein. And the president is proclaiming a new uniquely American right to preemptively attack whomsoever he may deem represents a potential future threat. “

He’s using the already propagated GOP meme (which he probably designed) that says Clinton is the de facto Democratic candidate. That isn’t yet the case, we haven’t voted yet. The right wing is pushing their media holdings to spread this meme far and wide. Here is their grand spin poobah doing the same. DON’T FALL FOR IT FOLKS! And oh yes, Karl will get his … probably already is.
November 18th, 2007 at 10:01 pm“Every presidential election is about change and the future, not the past.” And yet every Republican candidate for president likes to run on the idea of restoring this country to a greatness it once had in the past. Before terrorists frightened the ones too dumb to realize they would never be targets. Before the “surge” of illegal immigrants lured here by employers (many Republican) too cheap to pay living wages. Before women began to speak up and demand equal treatment as human beings with their own property rights. In short, Republicans want to see this country go back to the 1950’s (especially before rock’n'roll.)

November 19th, 2007 at 8:59 amMaybe he’s just mad ’cause Jeff charged him more than chimpy ‘n’ cheney.
After reading both articles, I see the one thing that Karl and Kos agree on — the Bush administration is a miserable failure. How else do you explain the positions in their columns?
Rove: Distance yourself from the current administration.
Markos: Remind voters of the current administration.
In other words, the current administration is toxic. And apparently both sides are admitting it now.
The next question — whose advice will be followed? Rove’s column could have been written by an GOP strategist — it’s pretty obvious what they need to do. However, the current crop of GOP candidates have come out in favor of staying the course (and even escalating the course) in Iraq, bombing Iran, endorsing torture, giving more tax cuts to the rich, and screwing the poor. In other words, giving us pretty much the same thing we’ve been experiencing under Bush. The GOP has already become pretty tarnished under Bush, and Rove can only polish it up so much, but the current candidates don’t seem to want to escape this mudhole.
Markos says we need to look at all the things the Bush administration has done to hurt our country and concentrate on fixing them. Most of the Dem candidates are already focusing on just that.
November 19th, 2007 at 9:45 amDreamcrusher, you’re funny!
Your not very good at making points.
Here’s a good one though…Iran’s a foe and an enemy huh?
Per Dick Cheney:
“He repeated these views in 1997 during a Central Asian oil conference, saying that the U.S. needed to re-examine its policy of trying to force other nations to avoid all dealings with Iran. “We are pursuing a policy with respect to Iran that most of our friends in the region think doesn’t make any sense…(and) it undermines our leadership in other areas.” He also warned that the policy could make the newly independent countries overly reliant on Russian pipelines and subject to Russian influence.”
And here’s another one about dangerous Iran:
In 1998, addressing an oil conference in Australia, Cheney said the United States should lift its threat of economic sanctions on companies attempting to do business with Iran. “I think the US made a mistake in trying to impose a secondary boycott in effect (on companies doing business with Iran)….We used to impose that kind of measure when Arab governments tried to penalize firms … that did business with Israel. It’s a bad idea, bad policy….There’s enormous damage I think to the US relationships with some friends around the world and I think it’s wrong. I think we’d be better off if we in fact backed off those sanctions, didn’t try to impose secondary boycotts on companies like BHP trying to do business over there … and instead started to rebuild those relationships.” (The Australian firm BHP had been criticized by US Senator Alfonse D’Amato for a project to build a gas line from Iran to Pakistan.) Cheney said it could take 10 years for the US to rebuild its relationship with Iran.
Oooooo, and yet another:
Cheney said Halliburton had some operations in Iran through foreign subsidiaries, which is all that is allowed under US law. “But we would like to do more than we’re able to do in Iran at present.” While US energy companies have had to sit on the sidelines, oil companies from the rest of the world that sometimes do not operate with “the same high standards” have invested in Iran’s energy sector, Cheney said. But he acknowledged that working to improve relations with Iran would be particularly difficult for the United States. “There’s been enough aggravation on both sides, whether you consider the Iranian occupation of our embassy in 1979 and holding hostages for over a year, or the shoot-down of the Iran airliner by a US naval vessel in 1988. It’s been a tragedy in terms of the relationship,” he said.
In February 2000, Cheney and Halliburton were reported to have held a major stake in Dresser-Rand and Ingersoll-Dresser Pump Co., two American players in the reconstruction of Iraq’s oil industry. A Halliburton spokesman confirmed that these two of his firm’s former joint ventures conducted business with Baghdad. “The joint ventures sold (water pumps and) spare parts to Iraq through European subsidiaries,” he said. These interests were sold off several months earlier, however, and Cheney “was not involved in the management of either joint venture and was not involved in the decision to make such sales” to Iraq.
