FBI sought Lewis and Calvert’s records in July.

Over the summer, FBI investigators “examined the personal financial records” of two members of the House Appropriations Committee, Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA) and Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), as part of “ongoing probes into their earmarking activities.” Both inquiries were made on “July 24 by two agents” in a California field office. For Calvert, it “is the first signal in months that he is still under scrutiny.” (HT: TPMmuckraker.)

    What would Dean Martin think!

Sigh. More investigations into earmarking. Not that the investigations are a waste of money — no doubt there’s plenty of slime to be found under the earmarking rocks.

The question shouldn’t be “should we investigate earmarks?”, but “should earmarking be allowed at all?”

Earmarks can be for worthy things, and they can be for political favors. No matter what they’re for, they are essentially a grant, and should be treated as such.

Grants should not be issued by Congress where the process for getting one is at the highest risk for being completely corrupted by lobbyists and special interests. If an entity or a cause is worthy of receiving a grant, then let it be done through the government agency responsible for overseeing whatever department the grant would fall under.

I can’t wait to see Jerry ‘hairspray’ Lewis reading to Dukester in the can.

Gee, do you think we’ll ever see the results of the “investigation”, or will it be swept under the rug like most of the others (because they’re connected politically)??????

I can’t help but think that this is just an appeasement to shut up Democrats by making it look like the Justice Department is thinking about doing something. Remember, there is less than a year before elections take place. If something in this venue occurs before then, I’ll be shocked (and suspicious.)
