Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will make his seventh trip to Iraq over the Thanksgiving holiday as part of a small congressional delegation. In March, McCain was mocked for suggested he could “walk through” neighborhoods unarmed in Baghdad. In April, he strolled through a Baghdad market, escorted by 100 soldiers, 3 Blackhawk helicopters, and 2 Apache gunships.

UPDATE: McCain will be joined by Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), among others.
Pick up some rugs for me, Johnny. ^_^
November 19th, 2007 at 11:34 amgee after all this time money and lives Im sure he wont need protection…
November 19th, 2007 at 11:37 amI can’t say what I really want to happen.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:38 amIf McCain makes it there and back with no mishaps, it will be spun as evidence of how well things are going in Iraq, and how pulling out now would be disastrous.
If McCain doesn’t make it there and back with no mishaps, it will be evidence of just how much more there still is to do in Iraq, and how pulling out now would be disastrous.
Either way, McCain’s little stunt is grist for the propaganda mill.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:38 amWill he be wearing his pink speedos?
November 19th, 2007 at 11:42 amThat is the objective, but I would hope congress and the Democrats would point out the improvement in Basra when British troops left.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:44 amI just read over at HuffPo that BillO went to Afghanistan on Friday. Ewwww, the linked the story to hotair.com. Yuck.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:49 amIf McCain really wants to demonstrate how safe it is in Baghdad, he should go without ANY escort.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:49 amThat’ll prove his point.
There are certainly areas in Iraq where there is improvement, mostly because the areas have been thoroughly ‘cleansed’ of any opposition ethnic groups.
Sorta like in a forest fire, after its completely burned an area out, you can say that there is no danger of this area being on fire any more.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:50 amChristmas Shopping? I dread to be a friend of Mc Pain…. I know what I’d be getting for Christmas… More RUGS.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:51 amMcCain is a turkey and should be properly dressed.
Granted, he’s already stuffed, but the heat has been turned up; let’s see how long it takes until he gets burned.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:52 amThings are just fine behind the walls of the Green Zone. And they’ve added Rocky Road to the ice cream menu.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:52 amSince we have been getting all this rosy news about how so much progress is being made over there, and how the violence is diminishing, I assume that McCain can now stroll out to the market sans kevlar vest and helicopters?
November 19th, 2007 at 11:53 amWaste of taxpayers money.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:55 amWho’s going to pay for Johnnie boy’s trip?…you are.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:55 am#14 Xisithrus:
My very first thought, too.
November 19th, 2007 at 11:57 amActually, I don’t understand the purpose of the trip.
His poll numbers among evangelical voters would have to be in the negatives to be much lower and among the non-crazies, there is no more believing in this war.
Doesn’t seem like he’ll get much out of this trip.

He won’t have to gas up the Straight Talk Express for a week. At $3.20/gallon that’s a huge campaign savings.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:02 pmSo naturally, since he hears that violence is supposedly down, he thinks now is his chance to finally go on that hilarious “Victory Constitutional” that helped tank him campaign a while back.
Problem for Johnnie is that while “troops deaths” are down, Iraqi civilian deaths have fallen from 1,000 a month to around 900… not exactly “strolling the streets unprotected” weather.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:03 pmOh goody. I hope Blackwater shoots him.

November 19th, 2007 at 12:05 pmIf I was a soldier and these bozos came over at Thanksgiving to do their transparent photo-ops I’d be pissed.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:05 pmAfter being declared MIA in Viet Nam, McCain is now officially MIA in Congress.
What if AQ kidnaps him? Would they even get any ransom?

Well, he’s neither a troop nor Iraqi, so he’ll be just fine. What are the current numbers for tourist deaths in Iraq? Pretty low, I bet.

After a week they’d be begging us to take him back.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:11 pmSenator McCain – to show how safe Iraq is, please go on a cross-country bicycle ride from north to south. Do so without any escort or protection.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:12 pmI’ll donate $100 to John McCain’s presidential election campaign if he walks around Baghdad unescorted for 24 hours.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:13 pmAnd of course McCave doesn’t need to be protected since he made that comment on how he doesn’t need secret service. Hope he gets the 2 for 1 special on rugs as Xmas gifts.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:14 pmsomebody’s poll ratings need a photo-op boost.
November 19th, 2007 at 12:15 pmnothing says you’re a tough guy more than walking the streets with about 100+ marines protecting you…..but then McCain will say and do just about anything to appease his alzheimer suffering racist geriatric base.
place your rug order with closeted self loather Mitch McConnell….

That’s part of the reason. The other part is that our government is using our taxpayer money (well, probably not, just borrowed money from China) to pay off the sheiks so that they will stop killing our soldiers. My question is, what is going to happen when the payments stop? Also, is this the reason for the big jump in Busharruf’s request for funding for the “troops”?
November 19th, 2007 at 12:32 pmWhat are the current numbers for tourists in Iraq?
Pretty non-existent, I’d imagine?
November 19th, 2007 at 12:33 pmSorry Mc”Non-factor”, I prefer my inside views from ACTUAL inside sources:
Not many of the people who were blogging in English from inside Iraq appear to be still there.

Is he gonna do some Christmas Shopping for the relatives, he will have plenty of soldiers to carry all the presents. And those gun ships can sure hold a lot of presents also.

November 19th, 2007 at 12:48 pmIraq is the graveyard of the Republican Party. You might as well stay there, John.
November 19th, 2007 at 1:00 pmWhy don’t McCain and Lieberman just stay in Iraq? Seems like a good place for them.
November 19th, 2007 at 1:11 pmWould you pick me up something worth the 20 thousand you have stolen from me? I would insist on your bringing back the same 20K for everyone else. Just all of our military and all the gear and the pallets of currency would be acceptable too?
November 19th, 2007 at 1:23 pmno? didn’t think so. But would you please take our suggestions and go shopping at some out of the way location where the trip isn’t planned and supported by a division of troops? Think you can trust the troops you are killing every day?
“What if AQ kidnaps him? Would they even get any ransom?”
Yes, beer money from his young wife.
November 19th, 2007 at 1:32 pmCall out the troops! Crank up the Blackhawks and the Apaches! Crazy McCain and his co-conspirators, LIEberman and GrahamCrumbs, are on their way to PROVE that were making “progress” with our occupation and destruction in Iraq!
November 19th, 2007 at 1:32 pmWhat the hell’s next
Travelocity selling Christmas on the Tigris packages/??
November 19th, 2007 at 1:45 pm“McCain will be joined by Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), among others.”
Oh, I see that McCave’s other buddies are joining him in Iraq. Looks like they heard about the 2 for 1 special on rugs.
November 19th, 2007 at 1:57 pmI would love to see this idiot with his balls on his cheen, going out for a stroll without an army of security surrounding him! Have a taste of your ‘progress’. USA=WAR CRIMINALS
November 19th, 2007 at 2:27 pmman, these Senators are really getting smart(er), this time they are going on Thanksgiving time….
How did they knew they have BIG Thanksgiving SALE for Rugs in Iraq….
November 19th, 2007 at 2:38 pm“How did they knew they have BIG Thanksgiving SALE for Rugs in Iraq….”
LOL!
They will be there to beat the crowd.
November 19th, 2007 at 2:41 pmMcCain will be joined by Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC)
