Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales delivered his $40,000 speech at the University of Florida last night. Gonzales’ first stop on a nationwide college speaking tour got off to a very rocky start, as he had to endure shouts of “criminal” and “liar” throughout his speech. The St. Petersburg Times describes the scene:
Embattled former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales was a few minutes into his speech Monday night when the first two protesters took the stage, their heads covered and hands tied behind their backs like Abu Ghraib prisoners.
One of the young men stood silently beside Gonzales, who looked down at his notes and waited for two police officers to lead him away. Then came a young man in a military fatigue jacket, who stood directly in front of Gonzales with a sign declaring: “Habeus corpus.”
Watch it:
In the speech, Gonzales said his “only regret as attorney general” was that he did not have a “better process” in place for “changes in personnel at the U.S. attorney rank.” While clearly mindful that it was the U.S. attorney scandal that brought his tenure to an end, Gonzales still does not appear to understand that it was his highly-partisan water-carrying for the White House that was the root of his undoing.
Gonzales attempted to spin the college students by arguing that history will be kind to the Bush administration. “It will take years for the entire story to be told,” he said. “We know the first manuscripts of administrations are often incomplete, and they can be inaccurate, and they have to be discarded.” Gonzales is clearly banking on the hope that the next generation of historians will forget his numerous unconstitutional and illegal actions.
UPDATE: UF’s student newspaper The Alligator has more.
UPDATE II: FireDogLake has more, including a YouTube from the event.

Hey Gonzo…the entire story is starting to be told. Have you read Scott McClellan’s book yet? History will judge you a criminal and a debaser of a once great nation.

November 20th, 2007 at 10:35 amGonzo, like many of the Bushmen, is still spouting the “history will be kind” line. Bush continues to liken himself to Truman, and believes that history will eventually prove he was right about everything.
He needs to take a look at Nixon. Yes, many nice things were said about him at his funeral, but he is still remembered for his corrupt administration and always will be. Whatever kindness is directed Nixon’s way is the acknowledgement that he at least managed to accomplish a few things during his presidency.
Bush doesn’t even have that. Bush will go down in history as being the worst president we have ever had — one who caused such harm to our country that it will take years to clean up his messes.

Once the total destructive impact of this presidency is evaluated there will be no kindness from history for Bush. Perhaps an arrest warrant, but no kindness.

Their misty-eyed fantasies of glory in the distant future are ALL they’ve got left to look forward to. That, and lengthy prison sentences once we get control of the country back from these frauds.
Hey, Alberto!!! Surf’s up!!! Time for a little waterboarding????

November 20th, 2007 at 11:03 amLeaders who constantly appeal to future historians to vindicate them, are seldom treat kindly by those future historians.
What they will say about Bush is this:
Bush’s presidency marked the low point in American politics. The troubles that would plague later administrations, can all be traced to the fear mongering, power grabbing antics of a man who didn’t manage to lead America to one solid success in his two terms.
Some people alledge that during his time, America didn’t suffer any terrorist attacks. This is only true if you completely ignore the terrorist attacks that came under Bush’s realm, including anthrax attacks, the Virginia Tech massacre and the repeated attacks on America’s allies that came during the Iraq war.
Indeed, some argue that there are no reedeming features to the Bush presidency, but this historian would venture that there was at least one: America has yet to hire another malicious, ignorant, wannabe redneck hick for its top job, and indeed demonstrated that the cancer of conservatism is not to be tolerated simply because we want to play nice.
Had the Bush presidency come after a weaker president then Bill Clinton, it would have meant the fall of America as a nation. As it came after a strong president it merely meant the fall of America as a superpower….

I don’t have any grievance with the school bringing in speakers “from all viewpoints” but paying someone $40K to spread lies is a waste of funding that could be better used. If I was a U.F. alum I would be furious. Or a student there, for that matter.

November 20th, 2007 at 11:22 amPerry @30,
“The Republican Party has become a national freak show. How did the sociopaths all get into one party?”
I think that the conservative viewpoint especially endears itself to sociopaths. Conservativism is a reaction to the liberal philosophy that government’s key missions are to “establish justice”, “promote the general welfare”, and “secure the blessings of liberty”, whereas Conservatives love to promote the idea of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” and “getting government out of the way of business”, and trickle-down economics. When you are reacting against justice, liberty and the general welfare, you attract sociopaths.

This is an understatement. Bush has caused such harm to the entire WORLD that it will take years to clean up his messes. I don’t quote scripture alot, but I think these verses from Matthew 7:15-20 say it all:
15 ¶ Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Remember, Bush’s think-tank library will employ historians that will whitewash the whole administration’s criminality and rewrite history. So he isn’t kidding when he says history will judge his administration in a good light.

November 20th, 2007 at 4:42 pmGonzales was inept at some things, but no more so than many of his predecessors, e.g. Janet Reno. However, I am appalled at the emotional, vitriolic (i.e. irrational) responses towards the A.G. For example, under what statute would Gonazales be considered a “war criminal”? That’s ridiculous. If you really hate Bush so much for attacking Iraq, then you better blame every member of Congress that saw the evidence and supported it (unless of course they have the idiotic, spineless response of “I voted for it before I voted against it”). If you truly hate the Dept. of Defense, take heart, the 2007 Federal welfare budget is about 20% more than the Dept. of Defense budget, had a more than two-fold increase versus the Dept. of Defense, and consumes almost $700B annually. We could pay of the national debt in a few years if people would go to work, father’s would support their families, and our border and employment laws were enforced. Lastly, if you think more taxes are a good thing, there’s nothing keeping you from paying more.

You mean like claiming the Geneva Conventions are “quaint?” You mean like not understanding that his job as Attorney General was to protect the laws and interests of the United States and not the personal interests of his boyfriend George W. Bush? How about taking orders from Karl Rove to stack the Justice Department with Republican Bush loyalists for political reasons alone? Something like that cause you to believe he’s just a bit inept?
Your idea of “inept” is a true American’s idea of treason.
By the way, Janet Reno hasn’t been Attorney General for a long, long time. So why don’t we keep things in the present instead of pulling the time-tested Republican tactic of saying “look over there!” in order to deflect attention from the complete failure of the Republican party and flunkies like Alberto G.
Why don’t you save you feeling of being appalled for how your dear George W. Bush has decimated our country. Because Bush’s actions are truly appalling. Instead you want to feign astonishment that citizens of this country are finally waking up and seeing these Republicans for the crooks they are.
I’m no fan of welfare either, but I’d rather see our money spent taking care of the citizens of this country, and ensuring our infrastructure is state of the art, instead of spending our money on a war of choice that benefits no one, and kills our troops and innocent civilians.
Need more tax money? How about we collect from the top 1% income earners in this country who your dear George W. Bush gave all the tax breaks to, instead of raping the middle class.
I suggest that you are the one who is irrational. And I’m right.

but be all of that as it may - i have a real solution for you - go to http://www.nationalinitiative.us and vote if you want real change in the US and the world - now that would be really putting your money where your mouth is.
all the best,
