21 Reasons To Give Thanks

bushturkeys.gif

This Thanksgiving, progressives have a lot to be thankful for. Here’s our list:

We’re thankful for our country’s troops.

We’re thankful the minimum wage has been increased for the first time in a decade.

We’re thankful MC Rove has more free time to work on his dance moves.

We’re thankful Congress has “wasted time” trying to end the war in Iraq.

We’re thankful radio stations don’t play “Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran.”

We’re thankful for journalists like Molly Ivins, who was never afraid to “raise hell.”

We’re (not) thankful for wide stances.

We’re thankful to Michael Moore, whose documentary SiCKO started a national discussion on health care reform.

We’re thankful people don’t call us Buzzy, Cookie, Brownie, or Scooter.

We’re thankful we can now call Al Gore the “Oscar-winning, Emmy-winning, Nobel Prize laureate” former vice president of the United States.

We’re thankful Andy Card and Alberto Gonzales won’t visit our bedside if we’re
sick in the hospital
.

We’re thankful not all Dick Cheney’s cousins think like he does.

We’re thankful to be considered one of the “ten most dangerous organizations in America.”

We’re thankful that visiting the Mall of America isn’t really like visiting Iraq.

We’re thankful President Bush isn’t giving out any more back rubs.

We’re thankful for 12-year olds who can take down Rush Limbaugh in a fight.

We’re thankful our Halloween costumes aren’t very “original.”

We’re thankful no one (except the birds) gets hurt when Dick Cheney goes hunting now.

We’re thankful for “phony soldiers” who have the courage to speak out about the war in Iraq.

We’re thankful the “Commander Guy” has only 425 days left in office.

And last but not least: We’re thankful to ThinkProgress readers for their tips, energy, and support.

Happy Thanksgiving! — The Think Progress Team.

We are thankful that the dollar still holding in the world Exhange
    Markets..
We are thankful to other countries who are still able to lend us money.
We are thankful that a gallon of gsoline did not yet reach $5:00 this
    year.

We are thankful,of course, for TP.
    Happy Thanksgiving for all.

  2. Wayne A. Schneider says:

We are thankful that there are people willing to take risks to bring the story of Sibol Edmonds out in the open, where the country can learn just how traitorous our leaders have been to us and our constitution.

Happy Thanksgiving one and all, and especially to our friends at Think Progress. Keep telling people the truth about this government, including the truth about what happened to this country on 9/11. You owe it to them.

If you’re not interested in learning the truth, you’re not really a progressive.

  3. grover nerdkissed says:

a happy & stress-free day to all the nice, funny & thoughful folks who post here.

  4. barfly says:

We are also very thankful that TP finally installed a registration system.

  5. Jay Randal says:

When Bush and Cheney are gone from DC forever, then we have something real to be thankful about. At present my state of Georgia is in the worst drought in history and Atlanta soon to be without freshwater. The Iraq Fiasco Occupation is not ending anytime soon either.

  6. barfly says:

We (well, at least me) are thankful we still have republicans like Jim Comey, who places the well-being of his country first.

And thank you Jim Comey, for all that you’ve done to hold the Bush administration accountable for it’s acts.

  7. Jay Randal says:

Post 6 John Kerry troll: LOL you love war, and want soldiers to die for Bush, so go to Iraq or shut your yapper.

  8. Dave C says:

Oh this is sickening! What a total lie! Libs HATE war, hate our troops! Do you REALLY expect ANYONE to believe this???

    Comment by John Kerry — November 22, 2007 @ 10:13 am

Yeah, that makes sense. Which party exposes the details of mistreatment of returning troops? Dems. Which party wants to bring the troops home now? Dems. Which party is cutting off the troops’ signing bonus because they’re injured & can’t continue their service? Reps. Which party cuts veteran funding? Reps. Which party is responsible for the deplorable conditions at Walter Reed? Reps. Which party fights for the right of troops to have as much time off as they serve? Dems.

On every single issue regarding the troops the Dems are in favor of the troops while the Reps take away their rights. Troops are cannon fodder for the Reps. You call that support.

  9. Wayne A. Schneider says:

“We’re thankful for our country’s troops.”

    Comment by John Kerry — November 22, 2007 @ 10:13 am

As an Air Force veteran and a Liberal, I am thankful for our troops.

You, however, are confused. You seem to equate our feelings about war with our feelings about the brave men and women called upon to fight it. They are not one and the same. A thorough distaste for the war in Iraq equates to a thorough distaste for the man who started it (Bush), not the troops he is getting killed fighting it.

If there’s one thing that you should be most thankful for, it’s that you live in a country where you are allowed to hold such ignorant views, and all becaise of the brave men and women who fight and die so you can have that right. If you TRULY want to show your support for these people, then you’ll stand right beside us telling the government to bring them home safely and quickly. If you don’t, then you’ll continue to support the president and his war of choice in Iraq.

I am a liberal veteran, and though I disagree with just about everything you post here, I (as well as many of my fellow liberals) would fight to my death defending your right to say them. Happy Thanksgiviing to you.

  11. barfly says:

And thanks Keith O., for telling the truth. Your heads above all other political commentators (except for Krugman). While I’m at it, thanks NYT, for unleashing Paul K. from behind the subscription wall.

  12. Menehune says:

Dear God. Today we are thankful that our national nightmare is finally about to enter its last year. However, we beseech you to please contain the additional damage they commit next year. Next Thanksgiving will truly be a party!

  13. Jay Randal says:

Real party is when Bush is gone Menehune on January 20, 2009. The entire world will celebrate and drink every bottle of champagne too.

  14. Bartolo says:

As a resident of Virginia, I am thankful for Senator Jim Webb.

  15. Jay Randal says:

Imagine the New Year’s celebration at midnight of December 31, 2008: We will all scream only 20 more days of that Dubya turd in Washington.

  16. barfly says:

“Next Thanksgiving will truly be a party!”

    Comment by Menehune

Yeah. Just picture Bush, pardoning next year’s bird. The bird speaks (in GWB’ s addled mind): “hey buddy, don’t worry about me, who’s gonna pardon you?”

  17. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Comment by Jay Randal — November 22, 2007 @ 10:32 am

I’d rather be shouting “It’s been almost a year since we got rid of those crooks in the White House!”

  18. doro says:

I’m thankful, that while reading this another eight minutes of the 425 days have passed.

  19. barfly says:

    Comment by barfly — November 22, 2007 @ 10:33 am

I still believe it’s possible that if Bush and Cheney are still around come Jan 18, 2009, Bush will give a full pardon to Cheney, then immediately resign. Once he takes the oath of office (through gritted teeth), President Cheney will then issue a full pardon to Bush. And they both get away scot-free. That’s why we must impeach and remove them both before it’s too late.

If it’s possible to do, and if it’s despicable, Bush and Cheney will do it.

  21. GSD says:

I’m thankful I can use US troops like chessmen and then make jokes about them not finding any WMD’s.

  22. Jay Randal says:

Wayne > huge celebration starts the very minute Bush departs after new President is sworn into office. Americans must demand that Bush is never allowed to utter another word in public, nor for his face to ever be seen again neither.

  23. thecowboydictator says:

to John Kerry. Don’t you dare tell me how I feel about our troops. I have two wonderful nephews serving in the military. THEY are the ones who are really suffering. Blind Faith in Bad Leadership is NOT Patriotism! “Support our Troops, Impeach Bush”. moron neocon troll. go find a life somewhere, you certainly don’t have one worth living.

  24. Jay Randal says:

Dubya in the pic looks like he would enjoy blowing up the turkey, by putting firecrackers up its butt. That is how he enjoyed himself as a child blowing up small animals for pleasure. He is mentally deranged.

  25. barfly says:

If it’s possible to do, and if it’s despicable, Bush and Cheney will do it.

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider

It would mean the end of the republican party, if they did it. No one would ever trust a republican again – including other republicans.

  29. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

    Give thanks.

Give thanks for almost seven years of misrule by the Bush crime family… Give thanks for those loyal Republicans, Florida Governor Jeb Bush and Secretary of State Katherine Harris, who illegally removed some fifty thousand black voters from the voting rolls in 2000 because their names resembled those of Texas felons, and our corporate media who happy covered up this Bit o’ Treason…

Give thanks for the corporate media who continually smeared President Bill Clinton, since Newt Gingrich let his Contract on America loose back in 1994… Give thanks for the corporate media’s smearing of VP Al Gore during the 2000 Presidential campaign… Give thanks for the corporate media’s going very lightly on the Royal Bush during the 2000 Presidential campaign…

Give thanks for five Supreme Idiots on our highest Court how managed to stop our 220-year-old Democracy dead in its tracks, stop the counting of the votes in the Florida Presidential Election and hand the election on a silver platter to the very sore loser Royal Bush in December 2000.

Give thanks for the veritable cornucopia of Bush/Cheney lies, greed, Diebolded-elections, torture, war-mongering, murder, fascism, war crimes, arrogance, stupidity, bullying, cronyism, corruption, smearing, sliming, and treason since that terrible day in December 2000.

  30. tablogloid says:

Thankful I have universal health care.
Thankful I don’t have an illegal war.

    Comment by Jay Randal —

Deputy Dogg Lieberman in a helmet, looking out a gap in the sand-bagged berm like he’s just loaded his senatorial shorts with the remnants of last night’s meal – for that, I would be thankful.

  32. Jay Randal says:

barfly > McCain will proclaim a mortar missed him, so Iraq is getting better.

  33. Jay Randal says:

Off to fix a pumpkin pie, so have fun all. If Bush falls off his bike today, on his head, then that would cheer me up.

  34. barfly says:

McCain will proclaim a mortar missed him, so Iraq is getting better.

    Comment by Jay Randal

“Our efforts are finally paying off. Today’s failed mortar attack demonstrates that Iraqis’ are enjoying the fruits of democracy. As it was so wildly off-target, we have concluded the attackers must have been drunk. So, here we see Iraqis acting like drunken hillbillys, definitely an improvement from the bad old bays of suicide bombers…”

  35. doro says:

    # 35 Jay, that wouldn’t hurt his braincell a bit ;-)

  36. barfly says:

    “bad old bays”

    Oops. make that “days.”

  37. Erroll says:

I seriously doubt if the Iraqis are thankful that the United States military and the civilian contractors are occupying their country, plundering their resources, breaking down their doors, indiscriminately killing and brutalizing and terrorizing their civilian population. The Iraqi people will be most grateful when the U.S. military has finally left their country so that they can finally go back to their homes, assuming that their homes have not been destroyed [over a million Iraqis displaced from their homes] by those brave American soldiers. Americans always wish to think of themselves as being a benign source for good in the world. What the U.S. military has done in Iraq and Afghanistan should have effectively put to rest that lie, at least to any thinking person who has the word empathy in their vocabulary, forever.

  38. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    Comment by John Kerry — November 22, 2007 @ 11:48 am

I do believe that I am delusional, but how could anyone know for sure about himself? Are you so certain that you are not delusional? It’s a question people who operate in the reality-based community ask themselves every now and then. Have you ever asked this of yourself?

For you to say what you did infers that you do not understand the nature of how and when the military gets used. They do not decide on their own missions (at the troop level, the level where most of these brave men and women are dying over a lie – you do realize that the reality-based community regards the entire justification for the war in Iraq as a total, malicious, deliberate fabrication, do you not?), the soldiers obey the lawful orders of those appointed over them. I know what their oath says. I took it once myself. Have you? If so, thank you for your service to our country. If not, you know not of what you speak.

Also, you seem to think that the “mission” (whatever the hell that may be this week – you do realize that the reality-based community has recognized that Bush has changed the reason why our troops are there since at least the time that Saddam was already dead, do you not?) is one that is even achievable militarily. On what do you base this presumption? Because George W. Bush said so? Is that the entire basis of your belief system? The president said it, so it must be true? Which one of us is delusional?

I know how to separate the mission given by the Commander-in-Chief from the people he sends out to try to achieve it. “Theirs is not to reason why, theirs is but to do and die.” How true that is when the orders are given by George W. Bush.

Happy Thanksgiving, and thank the Armed Forces of the United States for protecting your right to your delusional opinions.

“Bravo Dave C!! You said it all. I couldn’t have said it better!”

It appears that the troll’s reading comprehension is somewhat limited. Either troll K. only read the first four words of Dave’s post, was up much too early this morning spamming TP or he is drinking heavily. Maybe it is all three.

    Comment by Wayne A. Schneider — November 22, 2007 @ 12:14 pm

Okay, I goofed. I meant to start that with “not delusional”, but I decided it works either way. I must be delusional to think that anyone could find a rational explanation to support George W. Bush.

  42. Erroll says:

    #43-criticalthinker

Very well put. My comments at post #39 essentially echo your thoughts.

  43. AngryOne says:

A Washington Post report that the Bush administration is facing a massive backlog of hundreds of thousands of applications for U.S. citizenship is sadly unsurprising. After all, as the Katrina disaster and new passport fiasco demonstrated, incompetence is the hallmark of President Bush’s Department of Homeland Security. But with the news that hundreds of thousands of immigrants – many of them Hispanic – may be unable to vote in the 2008 elections, Americans can be forgiven for suspecting some more sinister as work.

    For the disturbing details, see:

I am thankful for the Sparrow:

    All hail the humble sparrow,
    That mighty little bird,
She flies the straight and narrow,
    Ne’er missing with her tird!

The Commander-in-Chief in the garden one day
    While searching for all of the “right” words to say;
Did look to his sleeve and much to his dismay
A gift from the sparrow was on there to stay!

    All hail the humble sparrow,
    That mighty little bird,
She flies the straight and narrow,
    Ne’er missing with her tird!

    “Quick call out the Service and call up the Guard;
And hunt down that sparrow, it can’t be that hard!”
    While Dick got his shotgun, Rove loosed a canard;
The President’s stature was permanently marred!

    All hail the humble sparrow,
    That mighty little bird,
She flies the straight and narrow,
    Ne’er missing with her tird.

    We love the mighty sparrow,
    That humble little bird,
    Salute the mighty sparrow,
    And give Bush the Bird!

Yeah, right. Then stop defaming and undermining them and their mission.
    Comment by USA_Patriot — November 22, 2007 @ 4:37 pm

As soon as you stop enslaving them, killing them, ripping them off, abusing them when they return and using them in your place, cowardly chickenhawk. We know how much you hate the troops and fear service, it’s clear with your every lie, your every post from the safety of mommy’s room. They have no mission but to make money for Bushco, and they have been stripped of all honor by being forced to murder innocents in their beds. We want them home, now, released from slavery and from the murderous lunacy that is the bush cabal, the Treason party and the cowards that support treason.

    aww… i missed it…
and i wasn’t even havin’ too much fun…

but, it was a good day… not a word about politics…
with 40ish people of all ages, that’s not too hard to do…

just wanted to add my own message of thanks here at TP…
i am very thankful to have the news and information – THE TRUTH -
available here… thankful for all the hard work the TP crew manages…
and for all the comprehension and divergent ideas that the TP threads
and commenters provide… thankful for the community of TP “friends”
that has developed, making it just a little bit easier to cope with and endure the changes and confusing events over the past few years…

there are times, i must say, that i wish i were blissfully ignorant of it all…

sometimes i get the feeling that even if we COULD “save the world”,
it wouldn’t get noticed… but maybe that would be the best way…
just, the next generation will carry on and TRUTH AND JUSTICE
will be the NORM… as it should be…

    one can hope…

and i’m thankful for that too…
