UN: Iraq still too ‘volatile and unpredictable’:

Recently, many displaced Iraqi refugees have been returning to their homes as levels of violence decline in Iraq. The U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), however, “does not believe that the time has come to promote, organize or encourage returns,” as security “remains volatile and unpredictable.” The UNHCR uncovered several reasons besides security for the increased returns:

Of some 110 Iraqi families UNHCR spoke with in Syria the majority said they are returning because they are running out of money and/or resources, face difficult living conditions, or because their visas have expired. … The incentives offered by the Iraqi government of some $700-$800 to return home, as well as free bus and plane rides, have also played a role in returns. [...]

UNHCR staff also did quick interviews with returnees in Baghdad, who cited economic difficulties caused by their long displacement as a major reason for going home. Many had run out of or nearly depleted their savings. Some returned as it was the last chance to get their children back into Iraqi schools before the end of the first term.

I can’t wait to see “the spin” on this one.

A recent report said that even with the reduction in violence seen recently in Iraq that it is still at 2005 levels. No wonder people are not being encouraged to return. Besides, the homes they abandoned have either been largely taken over by others or destroyed by the fighting.

Wow, the effective UN nails it again!!

I was on my couch and I was thinking the same thing.

Do something, freaking UN…oh, we know…they are gonna veto your resolutions. That’s effective.

    # 2; I agree; they may be returning to Iraq, but to their own homes is doubtful.
And don’t think for a moment that the $800.ºº stipend is not your tax dollars.

    >The incentives offered by the Iraqi government of some $700-$800 to >return home,

and where is this underfunded, economimcally crippled country getting all this bribe money to pay to anyone and everyone who does what we want them to do?

what happens when the money runs?

I think these people need to start watching the Fox Opinion Network so they have a better understanding of just how much progress the Bush Abomination is making in Iraqnam. I guess the United Nations has been overrun with the liberal American media that hates our troops and doesn’t believe in “god”. Fox Opinion will set them straight.

“Returning because they’ve run out of money”.

Guess what they will be doing when they go back home?

One possible answer: it won’t be pleasant for American soldiers!

That’s the General Assembly, not the UNHCR. The UN is not a monolith.
