Bush bristles at diplomacy.

Bush bristles at diplomacy.

The New York Times reports that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has an “unusually tight bond” with President Bush, which she has used to “gain control over the national security process.” But Bush hasn’t always been receptive to her suggestions of increased international diplomacy:

In recent months, Ms. Rice has gone so often to Mr. Bush to push him on diplomacy with Iran and North Korea that he has started to needle her that she expects him to talk to people like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the radical Islamist who is president of Iran, or Kim Jong-il, the North Korean leader whom Mr. Bush has said he loathes.

“You want me to sit down with Ahmadinejad?” a White House official recalled that Mr. Bush had archly asked Ms. Rice. “Kim Jong-il? Is he next?”

Steve Benen and Jason Zengerle have more.

  2. GSD says:

George, no need to talk. Just keep giving $300.00 monthly stipends to Saddam’s former loyalists in Iraq.

A little Insurgent Welfare is better than face to face talks.

    Loser.

A lot of bristles on that brush, maybe that’s why he spent all of August 2001 clearing it in Crawford.

This describes Bush’s foreign policy and use of military force. The problem is that you cannot win a game of chess with a hammer.

    Bush’s idea of diplomacy;

  9. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Not surprising considering he has to have his American audiences had picked before he will talk to them.

I thought the difference between men and women was that men could play ball with anyone but women had to “like” the person.

Sounds like George has some petty issues going on.

7 – Chris – it depends on your definition of “winning,” doesn’t it?

Ol’ Chimpy would be perfectly happy to smash the board and all the pieces – and he would call *that* “winning”…

  15. missmolly says:

It really doesn’t matter how tight the “bond” is between Condi and Dubya. Bush approaches his job like a five-year old. If he doesn’t want to play the game, he’ll just pout and stomp his feet — “you can’t make me!”

And then he’ll do what he wants, making up his own rules — usually with disastrous results.

Why Condi hasn’t left the sinking ship with the rest of the rats is beyond me.

It must be even more repulsive for Ahmadinejad to sit down and talk with Bush, after all Bush has an IQ of 10

When a Republican last week said Bush’s conversation regarding the Iraq war was “underwhelming” was an admission that Bush is kept in a bubble so he doesn’t see he is being used by the ones pulling the strings.

  21. Buckie Boy says:

Diplomacy is not what GW666 does, he’s the decider and he has been decidering that he’s the dictator and if those countries don’t do what he tells them to do then they are the enemy.

Sorta like Frogs were his enemy when he was a boy, and firecrackers up their butts was diplomacy.

I hear people say all the time that we are “winning” in the war on terror, or that our troops are “winning” in Iraq, but I’ve never heard anyone give me a definition of “winning”, or “victory” for that matter.

  23. texaslady says:

Chris – winning is achieving the goals set out by a leader. Well even tho the goals have CHANGED OVER AND OVER our troops have completed them, so the task is won and the troops need to be brought home, NOW !

No , Mr Pretzeldent , they both declined due to your inability to properly speak your native language………………….

Winning any war that guarantees future conflict is NOT a win. Dumbasses.

  26. mary says:

Bush has no freaking idea what diplomacy is! The only form of diplomacy he practices is gunboat diplomacy and isolationism.

“Bush said, “What the Iranian regime must understand is, we will continue to work together to solve this problem diplomatically, which means they will continue to be isolated.”

    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/11/10/bush.merkel/

    di·plo·ma·cy (d-plm-s) n.
    1. The art or practice of conducting international relations, as in negotiating alliances, treaties, and agreements.
    2. Tact and skill in dealing with people. See Synonyms at tact.

On the bright side, at least he doesn’t have John Bolton advising him! He was condemning them recently for being insufficiently hawkish on Iran.

‘Bolton is extremely negative in his book about the State Department under both Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, saying they gave Iran time to develop its nuclear program and “that’s why we’re at such a dangerous point today.” He describes the Bush administration’s Iran policy as “4 1/2 years of failed diplomacy” and claims he left his position at the United Nations because of it.’

  27. AngryOne says:

As Condoleezza Rice prepares to host the Middle East summit in Annapolis this week, her State Department has issued an updated historical timeline of American efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The timeline is a fascinating document both for what it reveals and what it leaves out. The rise of Hamas and its election victories are mentioned nowhere. That might just be because President Bush’s hands-off policy of malign neglect is in part responsible for it.

    For the details, see:
“On Eve of Summit, State Dept Rewrites Middle East History.”

  28. Zimzone says:

    Bush couldn’t even spell diplomacy.

  29. texaslady says:

The Powers that Be, behind Bush do not want a win. Just look to who and what companies are making money with this Iraq conflict and you can see the future plan. They care less about loss of Americans only what profits are to be made in oil, armaments, war supplies.

Again, I point to the fact that Bin Laden could have been brought down in August and this administration would not give the order to get him. Figure it out.

    Comment by Leftside Annie — November 26, 2007 @ 3:25 pm

Unfortunately, it’s more like “everybody gets hurt until you hand over the oil”.

I’m sure that their are many neocons who still can’t believe anyone “called their bluff”. Being mortal cowards, they can’t understand why anyone would sacrifice their lives for a principal. I’m sure they view such people as nothing but pawns.

  32. pete says:

Bush’s opinion on face to face meetings:

“My problem with dlipom.. dilpomacy is them interupters. I only understand half of what they say.” “And then it’s all big words that don’t mean nuthin.”

  33. Chris L says:

It appears that the Republican party’s only current definition of diplomacy is to invade, support dictators, surrendering and admitting defeat to Osama by forgiving him of his crimes and avoiding doing anything effective or competent as much as possible!

Republicans believe that diplomacy is something dropped from a B2. BTW, cold_hard_left, the ONLY Iraq war veteran serving in congress is a democrat.

  34. Tigris Lily says:

Did no one inform Mister Bush that sitting down and talking with other world leaders was part of the job of being President of the United States? What other presidential responsibilities does he loathe? Other than upholding the constitution, of course, and honoring international peace treaties, respecting human rights, heeding intelligence warning of possible terror attacks, working with the opposition party in Congress?

  35. Marie says:

Bush doesn’t “do” diplomacy because he CAN”T.
He cannot speak on any subject with the in depth knowledge and comprehension necessary to effect a diplomatic resolution to anything. He is dense, an oaf, yet intransigent in his self-focused approach to everything.

  36. OleHippieChick says:
