While reading a joint agreement on principles established between the Israelis and Palestinians at today’s Annapolis conference, President Bush stumbled in pronouncing the names of the two leaders standing right next to him — Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Watch it:
Flashback: In September, a marked-up draft of Bush’s speech to the U.N. was inadvertently released. The draft included “phonetic spellings of some names and countries.” Dana Perino said at the time that it was “offensive” to suggest Bush has a hard time pronouncing certain names:
REPORTER: Does the president have a hard time pronouncing some of these countries’s [sic] name?
PERINO: I think that’s a offensive question. I’m going to just decline to comment on it.
UPDATE: Check out Middle East Progress for more analysis of the summit.

November 27th, 2007 at 11:28 amWait, what….how is this important?
November 27th, 2007 at 11:30 amThat’s our boy! An anti-intellectual president for an anti-intellectual nation. Tell me again, neocons, why people who seek out knowledge are somehow threatening, “effete,” and unpatriotic people.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:31 amWhy does he always move around so much when he is at the podium?
November 27th, 2007 at 11:32 amAt least he’s consistent.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:34 amWait, what….how is this important?
Comment by gitrdone
Because the leader of the free world - our president - is either too stupid or too lazy to learn how to pronounce these names. That makes it important.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:34 amOh c’mon Dana, how is reality so offensive to you?
November 27th, 2007 at 11:35 amOnly Bush would get offended at needing cheat sheets to pronounce some of the names that don’t just roll off an English-speaker’s tongue.
If I was in a position where I had to pronounce the names of people, cities, countries, or anything else in front of an audience (whether I was a politician, a broadcaster, or any other professional speaker), you can BET I would have a phonetic cheat sheet with me — and furthermore, I would have practiced pronouncing any name I might be called upon to say.
There is nothing offensive or demeaning about this. It’s common sense.
What Bush should say (instead of cowering behind the “offensive question” dodge) is “Yes, I care about pronouncing things correctly. That’s why I look these things up. That’s why I consult with native speakers of these languages. It’s something everybody should do!”
But I won’t hold my breath waiting for Bush to say anything like that…

November 27th, 2007 at 11:37 amI suppose this isn’t really that important. We all have grown accustomed to having a complete moron as President.
And it does appear a bit strange that Bush is all of the sudden some kind of peacemaker. It doesn’t jive.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:37 amGeorge W. Botch-it strikes again!
November 27th, 2007 at 11:39 amWhat’s so historic about this summit. It’s not even on the “Road Map”. It’s not frivolous, our president is our representative to the world and he doesn’t have the ability (or desire) to learn the two names of the people he’s supposed to be bringing together.
Bush is a disgrace and the world see’s it.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:39 ammissmolly,
As usual, you get to the absolute heart of the matter.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:40 amDid anyone even listen to the speech? Or were you all just to eager to jump on his pronunciation skills and make a fool out of him as usual?
If you focus on the negative, all your going to think is negative.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:40 amThis guy’s a total embarrassment to this country in absolutely everything he does - or attempt to do. He still hasn’t learned to pronouce the word “nuclear” yet and claims to have a college education. Get real, Mr. Nuke-u-lar.

November 27th, 2007 at 11:41 amOne of these days, some leader should just call him “president nuke-u-ler” and be done with it. Then again, most foreign leaders are far more articulate, educated and innately intelligent than ours.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:42 amBush is consistently a shameless embarassment of ignorance and stupidity. He isn’t even serious enough an international politician to actually LEARN how to pronounce the names of his contemporaries correctly. Either he doesn’t have the brain power to LEARN them or he doesn’t give a shit. Both are unforgiveably incompetenct and disrespectful. No one should take such a clearly inadequate man seriously. The rest of the world is laughing at him and us.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:43 amTP, you can do better than this. Bush can’t pronounce names? Really? Who cares? There must be more news out of such a large summit. This is frivolous nit-picking that isn’t needed. Bush screws up often enough and big enough that you don’t need to nit-pick the little stuff.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:44 amStay the course!!! Hehe.
You know he could have practiced those names a little bit before hand, and why is it that it appears that he is reading it for the first time?
Most REAL statesmen/women would have the intelligence to know that you at least do a scan over and maybe practice read of this stuff before hand.

The speech is crap. It’s an agreement to agree to someday talk about having meetings to resolve outstanding issues. Oh, and to “establish a culture of peace.” And considering the elected representatives of the Palestinian people are not present, it’s completely meaningless.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:46 amAgain I ask, what is so large about this summit? Bush didn’t even stick around for it. He’s back at the White House. No mention of the great “Road Map”. This is a PR stunt and nothing more.
Bush’s display of dislexia is just another reminder of how low the republicans have sunk.

No, there really isn’t more news. The entire conference is a photo-op. All Bush needs to do is look and act like a concerned and involved President, and in botching the names of the two leaders he’s supposedly in high-level talks with shows the world that he absolutely and completely does not give a flying crap about peace in the Middle East.

All the gullible people think this is great!
And I am positively sure Bush is a complete moron.
November 27th, 2007 at 11:49 amIf, in the past seven years, Bush had been meeting and talking regularly with these world leaders in a sustained peace effort, then perhaps he’d be better at pronouncing their names. I mean, he does speak English and Spanish well, doesn’t he? OK, OK, the second sentence is cruel but the first sentence is a very valid argument.

November 27th, 2007 at 12:00 pmOn the flip side, can you just imagine what a brain full of lies and then more lies to cover up the previous lies, and then more lies to cover up those - must be like? Pure hell with the demons this guy’s got going on. No damn wonder his tongue is up his derriere and he can’t speak any longer.
November 27th, 2007 at 12:00 pmHow many times do you suppose his handlers went through these pronounciations with him prior to the speech? And he still mangles their names?
Assuming that you work for a high-profile company or have your own business, what consequences might follow from continually mispronouncing the names of important customers and/or business associates? How long would your company retain you in such a position, or how much time would pass before your business began to suffer?
Most people chafe when others mispronounce their names. In fact, intentionally mispronouncing someone’s name is a time-honored means of conveying disrespect.
The Bubble Boy’s apologists have no cause to complain should anyone ever mangle their names, whether intentional or not.
By the way, anyone else notice that he seems to slur his words?
November 27th, 2007 at 12:01 pmThanks Veritas. Nice compliments.
November 27th, 2007 at 12:01 pmPlain and simple: When you invite someone into your home, you are to make that person feel welcomed. If you have trouble remembering or saying a name, then recognize that problem and deal with it constructively; in this case, have it spelled out — in BIG LETTERS — phonetically. And practice beforehand.
Since he’s not bothering to stick around for the discussions, since his only task was to be the official ribbon-cutting/talk-opener, his sole responsibility was to read clearly in welcoming his guests.
Why does this matter? I’d be upset if it were a high school principal introducing guest speakers.
It points — once again — to Mr. Bush’s belief that he is the most important man in the room. His arrogance continues to reflect badly on our nation.
November 27th, 2007 at 12:01 pmgitrdone: It’s extremely important as a barometer of the level of intelligence (or lack thereof as in his case) involved in one posing as a world leader. You see that I utilized the word “posing” because we know he’s never been the “real deal”. Lights on/No one Home.

Look, Bush is beyond embarrassing on any level you care to mention. He is a disgrace to this country and a scourge to the world at large. His actions, and those of his associates, have destroyed the stature of this once great nation, not to mention killed hundreds of thousands of innocent people.
When viewed in the larger context, his mispronunciations and assorted verbal gaffes pale to insignificance and, were he otherwise a credit to his nation and his office, I suspect we’d be loath do ridicule him for them. After all, both Dwight Eisenhower and Jimmy Carter said “nucular” and we don’t go ’round making fun of them for it.

Also, just mispronouncing names does not mean that someone does not care. I served over a year in Iraq, and I’ve served in Kuwait and Qatar, and I still could not pronounce the names of many of the towns. This doesn’t mean I don’t care.

Arabic names are hard - I’ll grant that. Mispronouncing names doesn’t necessarily mean you don’t care. Sometimes they’re just completely foreign sounds that you can’t produce if you haven’t grown up in that culture.
But Olmert and Mahmoud contain no sounds that are foreign to English speakers. The most difficult is the aspirated H in Mahmoud. Even the most intellectually-challenged world leader should be able to handle it.

The issue at hand was the statement that the inability to pronounce names means that the person does not care. I was simply stating as an example that I cannot pronounce the names of areas that I do care about. I know I am not a world leader, and maybe Bush should have rehearsed beforehand, but with all of his massive screwups, do we really need to talk about his speaking skills? As far as my lack of intelligence, I have a degree in Computer Science, and I am fluent in three languages, but Arabic is not one of them. I don’t see how being unable to pronounce Arabic towns is “bragging about my lack of intelligence publicly.”

I know But you can say a silent R which would be more simplistic for Bush
Bush would get far too confused with a silent H

November 27th, 2007 at 12:54 pmDANA PERINO BIMBO, OFFENSIVE IS TO HAVE A TRAITOR, A LIER, A WAR CRIMINAL, A DESERTER, AN ELECTION THIEVE, AS A PRESIDENT.
November 27th, 2007 at 1:05 pmPERHAPS SOMEONE SHOULD READ WITH HIM “MY PET GOAT” AGAIN!
November 27th, 2007 at 1:06 pmIDICT, IMPEACH, IMPRISON THE WAR CRIMINALS!
November 27th, 2007 at 1:08 pmBush just went there for a photo op. His only job was to pronounce their names correctly and leave. Hopefully, he got the second part right.
November 27th, 2007 at 1:12 pmMapleStreet… HE CAN’T PRONOUCE U.S.A. ANYMORE BECAUSE THAT IS OVER! IT IS NOW THE FACISTS STATES OF AMERICA, THE FSA!
November 27th, 2007 at 1:13 pmBoreas: that wasn’t an ad hominem attack, buddy. It was a statement of fact: you do, in fact, have a stick up your butt.
I don’t care to be lectured by you, so please, keep your wagging finger and your sanctimonious outrage out of my face.
To put your own argument to work here, things are bad enough that we don’t need YOU adding to the general malaise.
If it makes us feel better to poke fun at the Chimpster’s inability to wrap his flapping lips around the most basic of phonetics, why not just let us have fun instead of being all sanctimonious and calling us “petty”…?
November 27th, 2007 at 1:14 pmWHAT A JOKE THAT IS… ISRAEL AND THE US COMPLETELY IGNORED PALESTINIAN DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS, DID NOT ENGAGED THE ELECTION WINNER IN THE POLITICAL ARENA, PUNISHED THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE FOR VOTING THE “WRONG WAY” AND NOW THEY PRETEND TO BE DOING SOMETHING FOR THE PEACE… THE SAME CAN BE SAID ABOUT THE IRAQUI GOVERNMENT! A PUPPET GOVERNMENT THAT HAS TO HIDE WITHIN THE GREEN ZONE FORTESS AND PRETEND TO GOVERN…
November 27th, 2007 at 1:16 pmBush is cursed. The curse of thousands of people that have died because of him (on 9/11 and in Iraq). And people still alive like me that wish him failure and death every single day. DEATH TO THE IDIOT! WAR CRIMINAL LOSER THIEF!
November 27th, 2007 at 1:17 pmBush would get far too confused with a silent H
Comment by Bush Cover Ups — November 27, 2007 @ 12:52 pm
That’s my point - it’s not a silent H. It’s an aspirated one. It’s actually supposed to be a bit harsh. Though without lowering the soft palate and making it a “kh” sound - a lot of people make that mistake.
November 27th, 2007 at 1:18 pmI have absolutely no problem with using phonetic spelling in speech notes. It’s common practice, it’s prudent, there’s nothing wrong with. It’s also not unusual to have difficulty pronouncing or remembering unfamiliar names. But the unwillingness to take the little bit of time to master the names of such important people in such a critical context is emblematic of Bush’s intellectual laziness and undisciplined arrogance. Feh.
November 27th, 2007 at 1:19 pmCan they call him dubya ??
November 27th, 2007 at 1:24 pm‘Diplomacy. As hard to do as it is to spell.’ -GWB
November 27th, 2007 at 1:25 pmAt least he got his own name right.
November 27th, 2007 at 1:30 pmWhy is this important?
Bush has proved that if you can’t speak correctly, you can’t run a friggin’ country correctly.
Let’s see, what other candidates can’t speak correctly.

November 27th, 2007 at 1:50 pmDrawlly Thompson.
Bush is a known language butcher.
Here is a sample of the intellectual limit of our President:
“And so, in my State of the — my State of the Union — or state — my speech to the nation, whatever you want to call it, speech to the nation — I asked Americans to give 4,000 years — 4,000 hours over the next — the rest of your life — of service to America.â€
~ George W. Bush, Bridgeport, CT, 2002-09-04
Everyone in America should be embarrassed to have this fckwit as our president. Too Bush’s defending trolls have a lower IQ than he does.
Really sad…..
November 27th, 2007 at 1:53 pmNew updated lyrics from “Maniac” from “Flashdance”
He’s a brainiac. brainiac on the floor
November 27th, 2007 at 2:14 pmHe’s pronouncing Middle Eastern leader’s names likes he’s never done before
He’s a brainiac…
Quit focusing on the petty stuff, folks. It makes us look petty and distracts from the real issues.
Comment by boreas — November 27, 2007 @ 12:02 pm
You are not one of US boring, you are a right wing troll. And just like yesterday, your concern is nauseating.
November 27th, 2007 at 2:29 pmY’all guys don’t get it. It’s all part of Bush’s plan, insulting both sides of the conference so that they can find something in common to talk about (i.e. Bush’s language skills).
There’s an ice breaker for ya, right there.
November 27th, 2007 at 2:40 pmHow embarrassing. The Chimp Wranglers don’t realize by now that they need to have practice time before they let him out in public?
November 27th, 2007 at 2:46 pmI find it offensive when you say the sky is blue. HOW DARE YOU!!!?
November 27th, 2007 at 3:11 pmAny examples of Chimpy mangling the names of his largest corporate benefactors, Big Oil executives, and/or his family friends, the Saudi oil shieks?
If not, perhaps this is a matter of laziness or a means of communicating his disdain toward the person(s) he is introducing.
Bloggers have noted that the Bubble Boy seems to mangle words and sentences having to do with treating others fairly, but seems to have little, if any, trouble, enunciating war talk.
Anyone have any relevant info?
November 27th, 2007 at 3:18 pmHe sounds a wee bit over-medicated.
November 27th, 2007 at 3:29 pmThe Hood Ornament’s just trying to polish his brazillion-dollar arm-and-a-legacy. Nothing special except the usual display of gross ignorance by the feckless bunghole.
November 27th, 2007 at 3:35 pmHe’s the reverse Midas. It’s ALL shit.
Leave it to ‘mericans to fail to understand that getting a person’s name right in diplomatic circles is incredibly important. Bush is a disgrace to this country.
November 27th, 2007 at 3:57 pm127 - “Hood Ornament”…???
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!
OMG. That’s perfect. Thank you for that!!!

November 27th, 2007 at 4:41 pmWhile I always enjoy Bush’s intellectual lapses; what’s scary is the MSM response to the “breakthrough in Israeli, Palestinian, relations”. Abbas doesn’t speak for “the Palestinians” any more than Bush speaks for “progressives”. He has about the same authority, to “the Palestinians”, as a hot dog vendor to the NFL.
November 27th, 2007 at 5:37 pmMaybe addressing Dana Perino as Dana Pagina for a while might make her see the light as to how important addressing someone correctly can be.
November 27th, 2007 at 7:31 pmprobably drunk.

So, that was your cold little nose I felt sniffing around! Okay, I’m busted. I do have a stick up my butt… but please don’t do that again. It felt really creepy!

No, I’m not a right wing anything. But you never know. I just might be a troll!
BOO!!!
November 27th, 2007 at 10:23 pmIn psychological terms Bush is “unconscious”, meaning he’s completely lacking in self-awareness. This is normal for sociopaths.
November 28th, 2007 at 2:25 amto gitrdone,
“Did anyone even listen to the speech? Or were you all just to eager to jump on his pronunciation skills and make a fool out of him as usual?
If you focus on the negative, all your going to think is negative.”
I’d say a lot of people listened to the speech because it’s comedy central but in real time on real issues. as for the negative, we, as in most Americans i think would fall over if the guy showed anything positive. as the leader of our great nation the guy is a joke and also as most feel we are the blunt of this joke of a president. as for this summit he’s called all these middle east nations to is also a joke. the way i see it he’s managed to put together a big party with his main objective being not to show up.
